Hawksbill Turtle Nests in Placencia Village Often hard work goes unnoticed, but once in a while the world gets it right. The Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development (PCSD) have received global recognition for their environmental work towards sustainable tourism as recipients of the 2011 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Award for Best in a Marine Environment. The Photo submitted by Mary Toy. awards were presented on Nov. 8, 2011 at the World Trade Market in London as part of annual World Tourism Day events. The PCSD was unable to attend due to high travel costs and having been allocating much of their budget towards protecting the Placencia Lagoon. However, as arranged with the PCSD, Xanadu Resort Manager Beverley Daguise who had attended the trip on behalf of the Belize Hotel Association (BHA) accepted the award for the Peninusla organization. PCSD’s co-chairperson, Mary Toy, said the win was a complete surprise. “When she told me we’d won, I almost burst into tears,” said Toy. As stated on the award organizers’ website: “The Judges were impressed by this organization’s campaign for locally owned tourism development (See PCSD. Page 20.) Trent wasn’t entirely sure what they were at first, but concluded quite rightly, that they must have been from a turtle coming ashore to nest. Acting responsibly and wanting to ensure the protection of this critically endangered specie, Trent immediately contacted a Photo by Marsha Trent longtime friend at the SEA’s Linda Garcia Environdiscovers expertly hidden Southern egg at nesting area on mental Association Placencia Beach. (SEA). Just several hours before on Oct. 11, while the full moon was shining, a hawksbill turtle had laid its eggs on the beach. “I had never seen anything like this in my 18 years living here,” said Trent. “I was so excited!” Several ladies in the area came out to the beach dressed in their nightgowns (See Turtles. Page 6.) While Malu is a popular darts competitor on the Placencia Peninsula, she opted to join the San Pedro Team this year since Placencia disbanded its darts team in 2010. This isn't Malu's first Women's Singles win. She also captured the title in 2008. The three-day tournament took place at a crowded community center in Caye Caulker. A total of four teams participated representing San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Cayo and Belize City. Players competed in men and women's singles, females’ doubles (See Darts Champion. Page 4.) By Stewart Krohn, PBTIA Chairman I am often asked by members and prospective members of the Belize Tourism Industry Association the question “What do I get for my membership”? The answer usually starts with “advocacy” and runs down the alphabet through “Betex” (our annual trade show), “communication” and “discounts”, winding up somewhere around “website”. One of the more important stops is the letter “t”. how to work with travel agents and numerous tour guide specializations. Many of the offerings are organized by the Belize Tourism Board at a national level and others are purely local affairs conducted by the Placencia BTIA chapter to meet the specific needs of Placencia. When added all up the educational opportunities may not constitute an organized tourism curriculum but they do amount to an honest effort by both the private and public sectors to provide ongoing professional development for the nation’s most important industry. Malu’s San Pedro Team took second place while the Cayo Team took third place and the Belize City Team placed fourth. Malu says she depended on strong eye coordination for her win. Her most challenging battle during the three-day tournament was a play-off with Cecelia Joseph of the Caye Caulker Team. "I finally beat her on Sunday," said Malu. Malu has been playing darts competitively for 12 years. Her serious training started when she played against Gurkha soldiers who were stationed in Placencia Village at the now-closed Sugar Reef Bar, which was located along the Placencia Lagoon. Today she sharpens her talent at J -Byrd’s Bar. In addition to her darts skills, Malu is also an appreciated cook on the Peninsula having served home-style Belizean food for 25 years. Today, she operates the Lunchbox across from Everyday Supermarket in Placencia Village where she offers her famous hot chicken wings, rotisserie chicken on Thursdays and daily specials including soups, salads, seafood and rice ‘n’ beans. ■ reservations manager for two whole days”. SEA’s Linda Garcia expertly explored the area and having found the location of the nest, estimated that over 100 eggs had been laid. According to SEA, the estimated 1.2m long hawksbill turtle was extremely active and created a labyrinth of tracks across the sand before choosing the shade and shelter of a seagrape tree to make her nest. The owner of the property paced out the distance of the tracks - the turtle covered a total distance of 476 yards from coming out of the sea to going back. That's nearly 1/3 of a mile! hawksbill turtle nesting in Placencia occurred coincidentally at Turtle Inn in 2009. Hagan said that there has been plenty of activity at Laughing Bird Caye this year; SEA has identified 11 nests, some of which still have eggs waiting to hatch. “That is (See Turtles. Page 22.) The guest-exclusive boutique luxury resort sways their visitors to take advantage of the resort’s proximity to Placencia Village. As stated in their vacation packages: “We encourage you to take time to enjoy these lovely people, visit their shops, eat at their restaurants and experience the culture of Belize. We are just a ten minute beach walk or a five minute bike, kayak or golf cart ride away. It's a benefit of being a guest of Chabil Mar and one we believe you will remember for your lifetime!" These precious eggs will take about 50 to 60 days to hatch. SEA will be making regular checks on the nest, which has not been marked for fear of attracting attention to its location. SEA’s Science Program Director, Dr. Annelise Hagan, said it is not unusual for turtles to lay their eggs on Placencia beach, although it is not as common as out at the cayes. The last reported Placencia Village Stars in Chabil Mar’s Promo Video Chabil Mar has extended this message with their new YouTube video launched online in October. The video begins with a focus on Belize’s location on the world map and then gives a quick overview of the country’s natural treasures, diverse people, ancient Mayan sites, and ecoadventure activities in both inland and coastal Belize. The video, which is being broadcast to a global audience via Youtube, then shines a light on the everyday Placencia village scene. Viewers will see gift shops, dive shops, restaurants, a baby riding his tricycle down the historic sidewalk and boats parked by the harbor near the main pier. Placencia residents will see friends who work in the community as photographer, massage therapist and police officer, and children might recognize fellow school mates taking an afternoon walk. The video also emphasizes Placencia’s convenient location for experiencing many of Belize’s popular eco-attractions from one central location. (See Chabil Mar Video. Page 9.) In response to a plea for assistance to address a series of pressing challenges facing the Placencia Mooring Masters (PMM), Shane Adsett, owner of Adcor Construction in Canada (www.adcorconstruction.com) is donating CA$2,700 (BZ$5,400) to purchase an important piece of equipment needed for buoy installations. PMM anchors mooring buoys as a best boating practice, which allows boats to easily fix their positions without using traditional drop anchoring. Boats tie on to a line, which is connected to buoy assembly that is permanently connected to the sea floor. Shane’s donation will purchase a new BR67 marine hydraulic hammer drill, which will help current and future planned buoy installations. Since 2006, PMM has had to borrow used drills from other marine organizations in Belize and experienced challenges with faulty performance and costly overseas repairs. Shane’s donation reflects an appreciation for his eco-activities as a tourist in the Placencia area. While he has fished all over the world, Shane has been returning to Placencia waters almost annually over the past 10 years for some of the best sports fly-fishing he has ever experienced with group of like-minded Canadians. This year he stayed on the Peninsula for an additional 10 days following his yearly caye-based fishing vacation. During this extension, he was overwhelmed by his first Belizean diving adventure and was taken aback by the grandness of Belize’s coral reef. Upon learning how the reef positively impacts the fishing and tourism industries in a country that he enjoys visiting so much, Shane decided that he would like to take part in its preservation and contacted PMM to offer his support. Shane and his Canada-based company have made (See PMM Donation. Page 20.) Chabil Mar Video. Continued from Page 6. Chabil Mar does all this before taking the viewer inside their award-winning resort. San Francisco, California in the United States of America is known for its plethora of ethnic dining options. It’s considered the culinary leader in the United States, second only to New York. And now, one of San Francisco’s awardwinning chefs and his wife have set up shop in Placencia joining an increasingly diversified selection of Belizean and international culinary offerings. – combining influences of Spanish, French Creole and Caribbean cuisine with Pan-Asian cooking and flavoring techniques. While Rimes brings an international approach to his cooking, the ingredients are representative of Belize’s food offerings. Using only locally available ingredients, Rimes aims to create something “uncommon and delicious.” Take their killer Ceviche Seafood Napoleon, a stacked ceviche – fresh local fish over wasabi guacamole, fresh cream, lime essence and red chili sauce. "Fresh, clean, amazing! Creative and unique! That is what we're all about," said Chef Rimes. Chef Randy Rimes and his wife Sabrina are the new proprietors of The Secret Garden Restaurant and Bar located just behind Wallen’s Market in Placencia Village. The dynamic menu at The Secret Garden makes an effort to please all palates. Try their Red Snapper Teppanyaki, a grilled snapper with unagi sauce served with gingered rice and spiced Asian slaw or their Chicken Linguine Arabiatta, a tasty compote of Italian sausage, chicken, tomato, onion and pepper tossed in fresh linguine. The group is grieving the loss of founding member Augustine whose last wish for Lumalali Beidi before he fell ill was to compete once again in the 5th Annual Battle of the Drums – an increasingly popular event, which takes place in Punta Gorda on November 12. Last year the five-member group took home an impressive second-place prize in their very first time competing against some of the best Garifuna drummers from Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala. Remaining members Andy "Twinkles" Arzu, John Raymond "Esse" Ogaldez, Rupert "Rock" Thomas and Nacio Palacio are determined more than ever to continue promoting their culture through music. The members of Lumalali Beidi were born and raised in Seine Bight Village where family stories were frequently told through music. By performing at various resorts on the Peninsula, Nacio believes that Lumalali Beidi are spreading the culture worldwide. “That’s very important because people have different perspectives of the Garinagu. Some people have heard about us, but they have nothing to actually relate to, or do they have the firsthand experience to say, well, yes, this is what I have seen.” To go further than introducing Peninsula visitors to Garifuna music and dance, Nacio says that the group would sometimes invite resort guests to join them for a traditional Garifuna meal in Seine Bight village. “I believe that living the culture and feeling the culture makes you a part of it,” said Nacio. Lumalali Beidi uses song, dance, drums and maracas in their performances. There are two drums: the primero and the segundo – both made and maintained by craftsmen in Seine Bight. Rupert “Rock” Thomas earned his nickname by mastering the primero, which is the smaller drum that gives “all the rhythm and all the breaking in the music.” Andy “Twinkles” Arzu plays the segundo, which functions as the bass. John Raymond “Esse” Ogaldez, who is also the principal of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Primary School in Seine Bight, plays the maracas or “shakas”, which complete the sound that calls listeners to sway their hips. Lumalali Beidi perform songs that were passed on from generation to generation. Nacio explained that the music comes naturally to them, and the group rarely practices before their gigs at the resorts. “It's passed Source: robertsgrove.com Lumalai Beidi playing at Robert’s Grove Beach Resort. on to us through our culture. It's a part of us. We live it.” Nacio said he’s so interested in his culture, that he spends his Sundays visiting with elders in the village. “They'll give you stories about these songs. Before they even teach you the song, they actually give you the messages behind them. Some of their personal experiences are in the songs … Some are songs of sorrow.” They are also a way to send messages to one another, and Nacio advised that you have to read between the lines to actually know that it’s about you. Lumalali Beidi perform every Thursday and some Saturdays at Robert's Grove. They have also played at The Placencia Hotel, Turtle Inn, Green Parrot and Laru Beya. Audiences may catch accompanying women from Seine Bight who sometimes join the group in song and dance. The drumming troupe is planning to recruit another m e mb e r t o r e p l a c e L l o y d Augustine. They are dedicating their upcoming participation in the Battle of the Drums to the memory of their dear friend. It wasn’t until a month ago, that they discovered they were finalists, which was also a shocker for the PCSD team. A few years ago, in order to offset Adcor’s carbon footprint in Canada, he implemented a tree-planting program using company revenue to purchase these trees. In January 2011, while on a fishing expedition in Sudan, he collaborated with the local government and the Daya Organization for Children to build a school for orphans, child soldiers, and children with physical and/or developmental handicaps. Shane now sits on the DAYA board of directors as project developer and his company is providing supervision and project management for the building of the school. The Placencia Mooring Masters are pleased to have Shane Adsett and Adcor Construction join our list of committed supporters in marine preservation. These include The International Seakeepers Society for their latest donations and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Belize who have been supporting the project from its startup and will be donating $1,000 towards our upcoming installations. This year Robert’s Grove Dive Center and Splash Dive Center in Placencia also became contributors. Such support has been crucial to PMM’s movement forward as the organization has had to face several The Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development was formed in 2006 by concerned residents from all communities on the Placencia Peninsula in southern Belize to address unsustainable tourism development of the Peninsula. Over the past five years, the not-for-profit organization has expanded its agenda to target pollution, dredging in fragile environments and destruction of wetlands and garbage and sewage management. PCSD also works to preserve local cultures and ensure continued ownership and governance of the Peninsula by local businesses and residents. The Responsible Tourism Awards are organized by founder responsibletravel.com, with support from UK-based media partners Metro Newspaper, Geographical Magazine (the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society), and World Travel obstacles over the past month in addition to our need of a new drill. In September PMM secured a US$6,000 donation of much needed materials to upgrade some existing anchor mooring buoys and new installations originally planned to be installed by end of October. Due to unforeseen shipment delays, these installations are expected to be completed by the end of November. While PMM is very thankful to the Ministry of Tourism and the Belize Tourism Board for facilitating PMM’s petition for duty exemption, the required payments for General Sales Tax (GST) and Environmental Tax (ET) have depleted our installation and maintenance budget by BZ$2,000. PMM urgently needs to replace the PMM funds spent on taxes to clear donated materials at customs. To help PMM, you can purchase PMM fundraising merchandise: silicone wristbands, slap straps (neoprene dive mask straps) and PMM T-shirts featuring the original artwork of renowned Placencia Artist Anton Leslie. These make wonderful Christmas gifts. ■ Market. The judging process is designed and organized in partnership with the International Centre for Responsible Tourism at Leeds Metropolitan University in England, and Virgin Holidays have supported the Awards as headline sponsor since 2007. Since they were founded in 2004, the Awards have attracted over 10,000 nominations from members of the public, leading to 201 unique organizations awarded from 51 countries around the world. The Responsible Tourism Awards were founded in 2004 to celebrate and inspire change in the tourism industry. The Awards rest on a simple principle – that all types of tourism, from niche to mainstream, can and should be organized in a way that preserves, respects and benefits destinations and local people. After the boy’s day at school, he approached General Manager and Owner of Splash Diver Center, Patty Ramirez for help. She was Sam’s first choice since he is always at the Dive Center, as his mother works as the head housekeeper, and Ramirez takes him to school regularly. Ramirez decided to ask her office assistant Marco Supall to make the presentation. Supall started out as a Splash Junior Member in 2008 and was thought to be an exemplary role model for young aspiring divers. He has worked his way up the ladder in the levels of diving from a discovery scuba diver to a dive master apprentice. Supall gladly accepted the task and started working on his presentation. After going over his quick key summaries and pictures with Patty, he was ready. Upon arriving at the school, he was welcomed by the Principal Ms. Martinez who escorted him to Standard 4 classrooms. The visit brought a cloud of nostalgia over Supall. “I remember my days as a student. Those days were fun and full of excitement,” said Supall. Supall introduced himself to the class and told them how honored he was to speak to them about what being a scuba diver was all about. Supall said he felt appreciated because the class greeted him with a warm welcome. He covered the following subjects: • Scuba Diving in Placencia • Placencia being home to several marine reserves and world heritage sites • Why tourists travel to Belize and Placencia to Scuba Dive • How he started out as Junior Diver St. John’s Memorial Primary School students line up during a morning assembly. Primary School students starting at age 10 can join Splash Dive Center’s Junior Club Program. • • • • How students can become future tour guides and dive personnel for a dive center How being environmentally friendly plays a huge role in preserving out natural resources How to be a responsible diver and taking care not to damage the reef and why that is important The different levels of diving The children were very attentive during the presentation, and their glowing eyes showed that they were full of interest, especially in the activities Splash offers to young people their age. The students were encouraged to sign up for activities such as the annual clean up at Laughing Bird Marine Park, which happens every year on Earth Day with Splash in collaboration with the Southern Environmental Association (SEA). Students were also encouraged to sign up for the Splash Junior Club, which teaches youths how to become a scuba diver with encouragement to advance through the different levels of diving. Splash stands behind educating the young minds of the Placencia Peninsula. Through the leadership of Patty Ramirez and the support of many sponsors, Splash has always made education a priority. Splash owes a big thank you to its new and returning guests, as proceeds from their diving packages goes toward the Junior Club, which is free to children starting at age 10. Splash is always open and ready to answer any questions students have about diving. For more information on our yearly activities, you can visit our website at www.splashbelize.com or contact Patty Ramirez at [email protected]. Thanks to Sam for coming to us and sharing his dream. Sam is now a full-time junior member and Splash has pledged to help him reach his aspired level of diving. Good Luck, Sam in all you do. ■ Turtles. It is important for community members to safeguard the wellbeing of these turtles who have been listed as “Critically Endangered” on the Redlist of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), said Hagan. “Mother turtles nearly always come back to nest on the beach where they were born, so it is important that we do as much as possible to keep the beaches accessible to them.” ■ The Placencia Breeze– November 2011- Page 23 The Placencia Breeze– November 2011- Page 24 COMMUNITY briefs Placencia Humane Society evening for all. Following the Truckee Graphite performance, students from St. John’s Primary School did a poem that entertained all that were present. The first part of the evening concluded with music provided by Entourage Movements that took things up to the start of the Flag Raising Ceremony. A voluntary community organization dedicated to animal care and protection Contact: Mary Smith (523-4306) or Jacque Fuller (628-0992) September 2011 Clinic please contact PHS. With all the holiday festivities being planned for, the September Clinic was exceptionally slow. Dr. Bennett spayed one dog, neutered one dog, and did a teeth cleaning on another dog. The Annual PHS Flea Market was held on Nov. 12 at the Ball Field from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thanks to everyone who made donations to this event. Now to the question presented last month: Vaccinations given were: 3 cat 4in1’s 14 dog 6in1’s 13 rabies Are dogs color blind? Or do they see in color as we do? This month’s thanks go to Robert’s Grove for providing lodging for Dr. Bennett, to all the volunteers who helped with this clinic, and to Turtle Inn for providing a pizza lunch for the Sunday volunteers. Thanks also to Jarka Tesnerova and Slavek Machacka and Virginia Glessner and Jay Fox for renewing their annual PHS memberships. Other PHS News: The last 2 female dogs on Bugle Caye have now been spayed. PHS would still like to find adoptive homes for these dogs. If anyone knows of a possible placement for one or all of these dogs, Answer: Dogs do see in color. However, they see differently than most people do and are less able to distinguish between colors. Veterinary ophthalmologists have determined that dogs see like people who have red/green color blindness. Dogs’ eyes have receptors for blue and green shades, but not for red shades. As a result, it appears that dogs cannot easily distinguish between yellow, green and red, but they can identify different shades of blue, purple and gray. Color is only one of many visual stimuli that dogs detect in their environment. Brightness, contrast, and especially motion, are extremely important to a dog’s interpretation of what it sees. Rotary Club of Placencia It was another busy month for the Rotary Club of Placencia as we held one of our annual events, completed an annual project, moved towards the start of construction on a large project, and started preparations for two upcoming events. support your community, you could be the lucky winner of the jackpot. Our thanks, as always, go out to J-Dees for hosting the Bingo games, Kathy Anglin for calling the numbers, and everyone who comes out to play and support our efforts in the community. BINGO Due to renovations at J-Dees, we had a little break in the Bingo action during the last month, however, Bingo resumed on October 20 with a large progressive jackpot. At the game held on September 15 (before the renovations started), the lucky winners were Carl, Marco, Brian and Therese (split pot), Richie, Malu, Adrien, Janine (2 time winner), Meady and Lisa. On October 20 the lucky winners were Alma and Adrian (split pot), Jason (visiting from Colorado), Ellen (2 time winner), Myrtle, Alma, Michael, Malu (2 time winner), and Therese. The progressive jackpot continues to grow and will be over $1,000 by the first game in November. Please come out and FLAG RAISING CEREMONY On September 20, the Rotary Club of Placencia held the annual Flag Raising Ceremony at the basketball court. As has been the case for the last several years, the evening started with another outstanding performance by Jim and Anna Mensies aka Truckee Graphite. Jim and Anna always put on a show that entertains all ages with their Christian message conveyed through song, dance, and games such as hula hoop contests, bubble blowing contests, and an air drumming competition. This year, Jim and Anna were joined by Bob Thomas, Lydia Loewen, and Kirwin Martinez for many of their songs, making for a memorable Shortly after 11 p.m., Mistress of Ceremonies Maretha McCullock introduced Pastor Percy Neal who delivered the Belize National Prayer and Fred Cabral delivered a Spanish Prayer to begin the ceremonies leading up to the raising of the flag. Rotary Club of Placencia President Steve Wade then took the stage to formally welcome all in attendance and honored Mary Toy, the Placencia Fishermen’s Cooperative, Southern Environmental Association, the Placencia Tourism Center, Merlene Bernard, Wallen’s Market, Lydia’s Guest House, Tipsy Tuna, The Moorings, and Village Council Honoree Teacher Rosalyn Eiley for their substantial contributions to improving life in the Community. These honorees have demonstrated over the years a willingness to help and give back to the Community and their contributions have been instrumental in making Placencia what it is today. The recognition of the honorees was followed by Placencia Village Council Chairman Charles Leslie, Jr., who then turned the podium over to Fred Cabral, who delivered a moving tribute to the late George Price, the first Prime Minister of Belize. Police Constable #1109 Godwin Augustine and Police Constable #934 David Mejia then marched on to the field and, at midnight, raised the flag as the Belize National Anthem was beautifully sung by Vanya Ferrel. The evening concluded with a prayer in Spanish by Pastor Byron Bosch and a prayer by Pastor Percy Neal. We wish to thank all that came out to participate in this ceremony celebrating Belize’s independence with special thanks to our honorees, Pastors Neal and Bosch, Fred Cabral, Charles Leslie, Jr., Constables Augustine and Mejia, Vanya Ferrel, Truckee Graphite (Jim Mensies, Anna Mensies, Bob Thomas, Lydia Loewen, and Kirwin Martinez), and Mistress of Ceremonies Maretha McCullock. The Placencia Sports Complex Upgrade Zone is a new project initiated by the Placencia Village Council (PVC), which aims to support local businesses and tourism, as well as the maintenance of the football field and basketball court in Placencia Village. The PVC is leasing space alongside the football field facing the main road and along the basketball court for businesses and parking. Rental fees vary on business category and the PVC estimates annual revenue of $30,000 generated through rental fees. According to PVC Chairman Charles Leslie, Jr., all buildings will have to abide by a code and density will be controlled. Leslie said that the PVC is making efforts to diversify the businesses. A committee was established to lead the project and process all application forms. Members include Dean Ferrel (Chairman) Charles Leslie Jr., Venancio Chee, Lloydia Caballero, Dr. Alexis Rotary. DICTIONARY DISTRIBUTION In September and early October, the Rotary Club of Placencia performed their annual dictionary distribution to all Std. III students in Seine Bight Village, Placencia Village, Independence, and Monkey River. As has been the case the last few years, the dictionaries were donated by Linda Thornton of Cardelli Shrimp Farms and each dictionary was personalized with the student’s name by employees of Tropic Air under the direction of Placencia Rotarian Sandra Johnson. We wish to thank Linda Thornton for her generous donation, Sandra Johnson and the employees of Tropic Air for their efforts, and dictionary distributors Steve Wade, Jim Weller, Wanda Stakutis and Greg Valiton. Special thanks also go to Ivan Leslie for providing an enjoyable boat ride to Monkey River and assistance in distributing the books there. SEINE BIGHT PRE-SCHOOL One of the Rotary Club of Placencia’s more active partners in programs and projects here has been the Rotary Club of Edmonton West, Canada. With significant and generous help from them, we have provided assistance to the primary schools in Seine Bight Village and Placencia Vil- Caballero and Ben Williams. Chairman Leslie said the community has been very receptive to the project. “I am extremely pleased that we are getting something done for the sports area; things have happened, but it never became a money generator in a proper manner,” said Leslie. Tenants start their one-year lease officially on Nov. 14. The project has garnered significant support from various entities on the peninsula. The Placencia Sidewalk Committee responded positively to a proposal by Chairman Leslie with a grant of surplus funds totaling over $13,000. An official plaque will be placed near the complex showing donors to the sidewalk. Committee member Venancio Chee is sponsoring the upgrade of the bathroom behind the basketball court and Wallen’s Hardware, Albert Loewen and M&M’s are providing discounts on materials.
