Handle Finishes and Grades
Genuine American Hickory Replacement Handles
Grades & finishes
Our striking tool handles are manufactured from genuine American hickory grown in the Tennessee Valley region.
Hickory is a natural shock absorber along with excellent fiber strength for tool handles.
The color of the wood does not affect the strength or quality of the hickory. The U.S. Forest Products Lab has found
no difference in white or red hickory’s strength. Therefore, the best hickory handles may be red, white or a mix.
Since hickory is a natural product, traditionally, handles have fallen into different grades according to density, freedom
from defects, color and grain. The three basic grades are Grade A, B and C along with subgroups:
A
A Grade is a top quality prime handles and can be red or white and meet all government specifications
for industry, commercial and other professional applications.
B
B grade is excellent for contractors, ranchers and other professional tradesman along with homeowners who want a top quality handle.
C
C grade is a great value for many applications and occasional use.

Tennessee Hickory Handles presents an EDP numbering system which positively identifies the Type, Style, Length and Brand of handle, plus
other information, in a simplified form. This system will eliminate errors, misinterpretations and is a timesaver. Its use is suggested for Purchase
Orders, Catalog Numbers and Inventory Control. The system is compatible with Electronic Data Processing systems. The basic numbers are in
the Price List, and the complete number for every handle will appear in the “Item No.” column on each invoice.
how it works
The entire “Handle Number” is composed of four digits. Hickory Handles have been separated into ten groups as to the TYPE of handle; e.g.,
Axe, Pick, Sledge, Hammer and Hatchet, etc. These groups are numbered from 1,000 to 10,000. The “Thousands” number signifies the TYPE
OF HANDLE.
Each type of handle includes several different STYLES of handles; e.g., Bent Single Bit Axe, Nail Hammer, Machinist’s Hammer, etc. The
STYLE OF HANDLE is designated by the “Hundreds” number. By combining the correct “thousands” number with the proper “hundreds” number,
the type and style of handle is identified.
The LENGTH of the handle is shown by the “Tens” number. The length of the handle in inches composes the last two digits of the entire
handle number.
BRAND Identification: The entire handle number is followed by a hyphen (or a space) and the BRAND NUMBER. The Brand Number is found in
the price list or on Page 2 of this catalog.
An additional hyphen (or space) and a number following the brand number denotes the weight of tool with which the handle is used. This is
required only on certain handles where the weight of tool is specified.
SUFFIXES: “X” denotes Octagon Grip. “S” denotes Small Eye.

each as requested. Handles 10" to 18" are packed in cartons containing one dozen each. LABELING - Our own labels or brands are regularly applied to
all handles. SPECIAL BRANDS - Your own labels will applied if furnished with order. We can, on request, stamp each handle with your firm name on any
brand selected. There is a $30.00 charge for this service when orders call for ten dozen or more. Only one line of type can be used and length is limited
to a maximum of 25 symbols and/or spaces. If handles are wanted without label or stamp of any kind, be sure to specify on order.
Important Note: Hammer heads produced by different tool manufacturers may vary slightly in the size and shape of the eye. The Tennessee Hickory
handles recommended above are designed for use with the majority of tools, without excessive fitting by the user. On request from quantity users,
handles can be supplied sized especially for any particular make of hammer specified.
