6 November 2015 - King`s House School
6 November 2015 KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL Dear Parents On the Friday before half-term I was fortunate to be part of the group of boys and staff heading off on our first choir tour. We were based in the Belgian seaside town of Blankenberge, and had a packed weekend of cultural, performance and fun activities. Our two concerts were in churches in De Panne and Bruges, and I was hugely impressed by the quality and confidence of the boys’ singing and playing. I am sure it is an experience that they will treasure going forward. Please the attached Choral Tour Newsletter for more details. Continuing on the music theme, Year 4 were treated to a African Drumming workshop earlier this week and they really seemed to enjoy this. On top of this, preparations are now underway for the various music performances for Christmas – Carol Services and Nativities – as we well as Year 7’s production of A Christmas Carol. The football season continues with plenty of matches taking place. We had a good set of results against the Harrodian on Tuesday for the senior boys (2 wins and a draw – including a first win for our 3rd XI) – and a clean sweep of results against Ravenscourt Park for Year 5. On Saturday morning we will be hosting Durston House for fixtures against the Year 7 and 8s. We are delighted to tell you as well that the King’s House Sports Ground has been chosen as the venue for the draw for the Second Round of this season’s FA Cup. This is mainly because our playing fields are also the home ground of the Civil Service Football Club, which is one of the founder members of the FA. The draw takes place next Monday evening and will be live on television, and we are very pleased that a number of Year 8 boys and staff will be attending – another exciting sporting opportunity. Reminder that the Year 6 Exam results will be available on the parent portal at the end of day, Monday 9 November. Newsletter Boys in Year 4 went to Richmond park and created environmental art inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy Mark Turner Page 1 King’s House School Newsletter 6 November 2015 Notes from the Nursery Department Oranges and Lemons The joy of Goo!!! Building Igloos with sugar cubes Dear Parents Everyone has returned from the half-term break looking refreshed and ready for the last few weeks before Christmas! This half of term is always a very special time in the Nursery; Christmas displays start going up and the Butterfly Class have already started learning their songs for the Nativity. They have been exploring their senses in the Caterpillar Class in the most wonderfully imaginative ways. There have been trays of wobbly jelly, sand mixed with shaving foam, oranges and lemons in the water tray, gooey corn flour and sponges soaked in tea. The children were sometimes a little wary of the activities at first, but soon became totally immersed as they investigated different textures and scents; the adults had lots of fun as well! In Butterfly Class the children have been finding out about animals that live in the Polar Regions. The children were set the challenge of building igloos for our little penguins, using just sugar cubes and marshmallows. This is not as easy as it looks but a whole table of children were completely focused on their task and produced some amazing structures. What was just as incredible was that the children were so engaged that none of the building materials made their way into little mouths! A couple of reminders for the diaries, Caterpillar Parents Meetings – Wednesday 11th November Butterfly Nativity- Wednesday 9th December 10.30am I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Jane O’Brien Page 2 King’s House School Newsletter 6 November 2015 Notes from the Junior Department Dear Parents Welcome back following the half term break! The boys were eager to get through the door on Monday morning and I was impressed by how smart they looked in their winter uniform. I must say how proud I am of the Year 1 boys who are now being dropped off at the front door and finding their way upstairs to class independently. This can be a big step for some, but they are all doing extremely well. Also on Monday, following a talk from Miss Meyer and me about the two nominated charities for the Christmas Fair, React and MeToo & Co, the boys voted for the one they would like the school to support. MeToo and Co came out on top which means money from the Christmas Fair and from the sale of the Christmas cards the boys have made will go to them. I know that some King’s House families have strong links with MeToo and Co so it is particularly special that we are able to get involved. The Friends Christmas Committee and Class Reps had a successful coffee morning this week and planning for the Fair on 5th December is well under way. Out on the playground this week it was a pleasure to watch the boys in Year 2 and 3 enjoying the selection of chopped fresh fruit we have introduced as a mid-morning snack. When I was on duty on Wednesday there was a lovely selection pineapple, water melon, apple and banana pieces which the boys devoured. Mr Denyer-Green, Mr Follant and the boys have been enjoying the recently decorated Music room and asked me to give a special mention to George who played a piece on the piano from memory during singing assembly on Tuesday. Well done, George! We are all looking forward to the next Tea concert which will be on 17th November. Having narrowly lost the first game to the hosts, the boys played extremely well for the rest of the afternoon, drawing one and winning the three remaining fixtures in their group. Having ended the group with the same number of points as Cranmore, it went down to goals scored to decide who would progress to the knock out stages. After a tense wait we found out that they had scored one goal more than we did! Well done to all the boys who took part and I look forward to the next tournament! Matt McKinnon Reminder Rugby trials for the upcoming season will take place on the following dates. Page 4 King’s House School Newsletter 6 November 2015 Music Notes Belgium Choral Tour 2015 A BIG thank you to all the boys who took part in this tour. You certainly did yourself and King’s House proud with two fantastic performances. I have posted the recording of the De Panne concert on Soundcloud, click this link to access it:https://soundcloud.com/khschool/de-panne-concert-17-nov-2015/s-lmCUW I also have video recordings of both the concerts. If you would like to have a copy of the concerts could you please provide your son with a flash drive to bring into school and I will load the videos and recordings onto it. External Music Storage Shed I am really pleased that the Music Storage shed outside the music block is being used as it has freed up the Music Block corridor. Just a reminder, especially with the colder weather, that no instrument should not be left overnight. While Brass and metal do not suffer with the colder weather wooden Woodwind and Stringed instruments do. Storage of all instruments during the day should not be a problem but do contact me if you have any concerns. Carol Service Adult Choir Thank you to parents who have offered their services. We are looking for parents to participate in the SD Carol Service at St Mary Magdalene church on the Tuesday 8 December. Boys from Year 4 to 8 will be participating in the Carol Service and ALL parents are invited to sing in the choir (JD and SD). I know it seems a long way off but this is a fantastic way to start your Christmas celebrations. If you have previously taken part in the Adult Choir could you please let me know if you are available again this year.
