This tool is equipped with a power cord that has an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug MUST be plugged into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded, in compliance with ALL local codes and ordinances. DO NOT MODIFY THE PLUG OF THE GARDEN SHREDDER. If it will not fit into the outlet, have the proper type of outlet installed by a qualified electrician. IMPROPER CONNECTION of the equipment grounding conductor can result in electric shock. The conductor with the green insulation (with or without yellow stripes) is the equipment grounding conductor. If it is necessary repair or replace the power cord or the plug, DO NOT connect the equipment grounding conductor to a live terminal. If you do not completely understand the grounding instructions, or if you are not sure whether the tool is properly grounded, consult a qualified electrician or call the toll-free helpline, at 1-866-523-5218. Fig. A USE ONLY THREE-WIRE EXTENSION CORDS that have 3-prong plugs and 3-holed outlets that accept the tool's plug as shown in Fig. A. Repair or replace a damaged or worn cord immediately. 1) 3-prong plug 2) extension cord with 3-prong outlet CAUTION: ALWAYS VERIFY THAT THE OUTLET IS PROPERLY GROUNDED. DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN, DO NOT USE IT IN DAMP LOCATIONS. GUIDELINES FOR USING EXTENSION CORDS Verify that the extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one that is heavy enough to carry the current that this product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage which will result resulting in loss of power and overheating. The table below shows the correct size to be used according to the length of the cord and nameplate amperage rating. When in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Minimum Gauge for Extension Cords (AWG) (when using 120 V only) Amp Rating Total Length of Cord in Feet (meters) More Than Not More Than 25 (7.6) 50 (15.2) 100 (30.4) 150 (45.7) 0 6 18 16 16 14 6 10 18 16 14 12 10 12 16 16 14 12 12 16 14 12 Not Recommended Verify that the extension cord is properly wired and in good condition. Always replace a damaged extension cord or have it repaired by a qualified person before using it. Keep extension cords away from sharp objects, excessive heat and damp or wet areas. Use a separate electrical circuit for power tools. This circuit consist of not less than a #12 wire, and should be protected by a 15 A time delayed fuse. Before plugging the power cord into the outlet, verify that the switch is in the OFF position and the electric current is rated the same as the current stamped on the motor nameplate. Operating the tool at a lower voltage will damage the motor. ⁄! WARNING: THIS TOOL MUST BE GROUNDED WHILE IN USE IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE OPERATOR FROM ELECTRICAL SHOCK. Allow at least 5 seconds for the blade to stop rotating. ! WARNING:ALWAYS ALLOW AT LEAST 5 SECONDS OR MORE FOR THE BLADE TO STOPROTATING AFTER THE SHREDDER IS TURNED OFF. Overload protection (Fig. 7) This garden shredder comes equipped with a reset overload feature. The reset button will restart the motor after it has shut off due to overloading or low voltage. If the motor stops during operation: 1. Turn the ON/OFF switch (2) to the OFF position. 2. Wait approximately five minutes for the motor to cool. 3. Push the reset button (3) . 4. Turn the switch (2) to the ON position. WARNING: IN ORDER TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENTAL START-UP WHEN THE RESET BUTTON IS PUSHED, VERIFY THAT THE ON/OFF SWITCH IS IN THE OFF POSITION AND THAT THE PLUG IS REMOVED FROM THE OUTLET DURING THE COOL DOWN PERIOD. 12 Operation - continued Shredding yard waste (Fig. 8) The shredder is designed to shred leaves, yard waste and debris, and sticks and twigs up to 1 5/8" (41mm) in diameter. The shredded material will accumulate directly on the ground under the shredder . CAUTION : Do not attempt to shred material that exceeds the capacity of the shredder . 1. Turn the shredder ON. 2. Place sticks in the narrow opening of the hopper . 3. Use the round push stick to push the debris toward the blade. Do not feed sticks that have a diameter of more than 1 5/8" (41 mm). 4. Turn the shredder OFF, and allow it to come to a complete stop. Fig. 8 Ú ! WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO SHRED ANY MATERIAL THAT EXCEEDS THE CAP ACITY OF THIS TOOL. DOING SO MAY CAUSE THE MOTOR TO JAM AND OVERHEAT.DO NOT PUT YOUR HANDS INSIDE THE HOPPER OR NEAR THE BLADE WHEN THE TOOLIS RUNNING. 13 ! WARNING:TURN OFF THE SHREDDER AND UNPLUG THE POWER CORD FROM THE OUTLET BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE. BLADE MAINTENANCE The shredder has two blades that are attached to a rotating support. When one side of a blade becomes dull, it can be turned over in order to use the other side. Dull blades can be replaced or properly sharpened. Replace a blade Fig. 10 1. Turn OFF the shredder, and unplug from the power cord. 3 2. Turn the locking knob counter4 5 clockwise until the housing cover can 2 1 be opened. 3. Lift up the housing cover in order to expose the two blades (1). 4. Place a 6 mm wrench (2) onto one of the four 6 mm bolts below the blade support (3) in order to secure it and stop it from rotating. 5. Use the other 6 mm wrench(4) to loosen and remove the two screws (5) that hold each blade to the support. 6. Lift out the old blade. Either reinsert the blade with the sharp edge in position as the cutting surface or insert a replacement blade. 7. Replace and tighten the two screws in order to secure the new blade to the support. GENERAL MAINTENANCE 1 For maximum performance and longevity, keep the shredder clean and in good working condition. 2 Inspect the switch and the cord for damage before each use. 3 Check for damaged, missing, or worn parts. Check for loose screws, moving parts that are jammed, or any other conditions that may affect the operation. 4 If abnormal vibration or noise occurs, turn the shredder OFF immediately and have the problem corrected before further use. 5 Do not use the shredder until it is properly repaired or replaced. 14 Maintenance Cleaning ⁄! WARNING: TO AVOID INJURY, ELECTRIC SHOCK, OR DAMAGE TO THE SHREDDER, DO NOT ALLOW A LIQUID TO FLOW INSIDE THE SHREDDER. • Wipe the outside of the shredder with a dry soft cloth. • Remove the hopper from the housing body before washing the inside of the hopper. • Do not hose down or wash the tool with water. ⁄! WARNING: TO AVOID DAMAGE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT USE STRONG SOLVENTS OR DETERGENTS ON THE PLASTIC HOUSING OR THE PLASTIC COMPONENTS. CERTAIN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS MAY CAUSE DAMAGE AND CREATE A SHOCK HAZARD. 15 WARRANTY For TWO YEARS from the date of purchase within Canada, YARDWORKS CANADA will, at its option, repair or replace for the original purchaser, free or charge, any part or parts found to be defective in material or workmanship.
