Maine’s Capital region.
Augusta, Maine’s Capital City, and its neighboring cities and towns are rich in history, culture, industry and
commerce.
Dozens of lakes and streams, the mighty Kennebec River and the beautiful rolling, forested hills of the Capital

As the seat of State Government and a major hub of business and industry, the Capital area harbors a vibrant
economy and offers opportunities for new business development.
The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce in the Waterville area
have formed a strong economic alliance called the People of the Kennebec. FirstPark, Maine’s Premier
Technology Center, is one product of this collaboration. In 2005, T-Mobile opened a FirstPark facility now
employing more than 850 area people.

Maine’s capital city, an original 1628 Pilgrim settlement, embraces the powerful Kennebec River along with 21
other small cities and towns comprising the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce region.
Augusta is both the capital city of the Pine Tree State and the service center of a Micropolitan with 70,000
residents and a workforce of 45,000 people.
Maine’s government center is rich in history, culture, educational resources, industry, innovation and art, with

People of the Kennebec: In the mid-1990s, the two regional Chambers of Commerce serving the Augusta area
and nearby Waterville area created the People of the Kennebec economic region, now recognized as a combined
Micropolitan statistical area with a workforce of 66,000 and combined retail sales of $1.5 billion.
This collaboration brings together a large number of resources to help provide quality job growth and business
growth, while preserving the best of our environment and quality of life in this Capital region.
BLAINE HOUSE (Governor’s Mansion)
The Blaine House, located on the corner of State and Capitol streets, was built in the Federalist style in 1833. In
1872, the motif was changed to Victorian & Italian style, and in 1919, noted Maine architect, John Calvin
Stevens, remodeled the mansion to a semi-Colonial structure. A gift to the state from Mrs. Harriet Blaine Beal,
the house has been the official residence of Maine governors since 1919. The Blaine House is open to the public

CHILDREN’S DISCOVERY MUSEUM
This exciting Discovery Museum offers a "hands-on" opportunity for youngsters through grade five to have fun
while learning in an interactive environment. The museum offers a host of exciting exhibits, including a
restaurant, grocery store and bank, theater and a rainforest/toddler play area. Kids can also learn about
engineering, construction and transportation. The museum provides wonderful opportunities for creative family

OLD FORT WESTERN – 1754
A 256-year-old treasure! Old Fort Western was built in 1754 by the Proprietors of the Kennebec Purchase and is
now designated as a National Historic Landmark. It is the nation’s oldest surviving wooden fort. Located on
Cony Street, on the banks of the Kennebec River, the Fort complex includes the original main house (barrack and
store) and reproduction blockhouses, watchboxes and palisade. The Fort portrays military, settlement, family,
work and community themes. Guided tours offer visitors an opportunity to step back into the past. For

HOLOCAUST CENTER
A new 6,000-square-foot education and resource center has recently been built at the University of Maine
Augusta. The Michael Klahr Holocaust Education Resource Center, built with the help of the Holocaust Human
Rights Center of Maine – and a generous donation by Michael Klahr, who survived the holocaust as a child –
houses artifacts and information from Maine residents who survived or helped to liberate the concentration
camps of World War II. In the new center, attached to the University’s Katz Library, researchers will find a rich
archive of reference material. Klahr Center seminars and symposiums focus on the topics of diversity, medical
ethics and the Holocaust.
MAINE STATE MUSEUM
Experience Maine’s past by visiting the Maine State Museum, one of the finest state museums in the USA. The
Museum presents exhibits of Maine’s natural environment, social history and manufacturing heritage. Located in
the State Capitol Complex, the museum is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.
m. and is closed Sundays and Mondays. Phone: (207) 287-2301.
MONUMENT PARK
Prior to 1879, this park was known as the Augusta Mall and was the mustering point for the Kennebec Valley
Civil War troops. Following that war, the westside rotary site was conveyed to the City of Augusta in trust for a
Civil War monument. Since that time, war memorials have been added for World War I and II, the Korean War
and the Vietnam War.
KENNEBEC RIVER RAIL TRAIL TOPS MANY BIKE & HIKE TRAILS
The Kennebec River Rail Trail offers miles of scenic river views for walkers and bikers. The recently finished
trail stretches seven miles from Augusta through Hallowell and Farmingdale to Gardiner. The University of
Maine at Augusta maintains hiking and running trails for all levels and the Greenway in Augusta is a shorter
pleasant river walk. The Pine Tree State Arboretum also offers beautiful wooded trails for nature lovers.
PINE TREE STATE ARBORETUM
Visit nature’s gift to everyone! The Arboretum is a 225-acre tract of land where trees, shrubs and plants are
cultivated for educational, recreational and scientific purposes. White pine trees have been planted in honor of all
71 Maine governors. Recreational opportunities include bird watching, picnicking, hiking, biking and crosscountry skiing. The Arboretum, located at Hospital Street and Piggery Road, offers a fine view of the Kennebec

SAMANTHA SMITH MEMORIAL
In 1982, Samantha Smith, a 10-year-old child from Manchester, Maine, wrote to congratulate Yuri Andropov on
his appointment as Soviet Premier. In her letter, Samantha confided her fears of nuclear war and the tense
relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. Later, Premier Andropov invited Samantha and her
family to visit the Soviet Union, experience its culture and meet Soviet children. Tragically, Samantha’s voice
was silenced in a 1985 plane crash, but her legacy remains a major step in the successful peace efforts between
the two super powers. The statue is next to the Maine State Museum.
MAINE STATE HOUSE
Noted Boston architect Charles Bulfinch designed the original Maine Capitol. It was built in 1829 using granite
quarried from nearby Hallowell. In 1910, another Boston architect, C. Henri Desmond, enlarged the building to
double its original size. It is truly one of Maine’s architectural treasures and recently underwent a $50 million
renovation. The dome rises 185 feet, topped by a gold Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. The Capitol

THE MAINE SHAKESPEAREAN THEATER AT MONMOUTH
The Shakespearean Theater of Maine is a regional treasure that attracts Mainers and summer visitors from around
the world to high- quality performances of Shakespeare and others.
Since 1970, The Theater at Monmouth has presented professional productions of the world’s greatest plays in
rotating repertory in the beautifully restored 100-year-old Cumston Hall (www.theateratmonmouth.org).

You can eat well in the Augusta market, from Down East lobsters to Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Thai and other
favorite cuisines. The Capital City region offers dozens of restaurants ranging from fine dining to family-style
eateries, plus lots of fast food places for the 35,000 daytime workers in Augusta and the tens of thousands of
daily visitors.
The Augusta-Gardiner-Hallowell-Winthrop area features many local favorites, such as Cloud 9 at the Senator
Inn, Slates, Rebecca’s Place, Margaritas, Hattie’s Chowder House, The China Dine-ah and A-1 Diner plus
popular chains Olive Garden, LongHorn, Ninety-Nine, Ground Round, Friendly’s, Panera Bread, Texas
Roadhouse and others.
Entertainment in the area includes a number of live theater opportunities and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra,
plus numerous musical/cultural presentations in the many public schools and at the University of Maine at
Augusta, which features a jazz program. The latest movies are presented at a modern 10-screen cinema. For those
who want more exercise, the area boasts a number of scenic and safe walking trails, bowling centers, an ice
skating arena and several health clubs including indoor racquet sports.
Each community in the Capital Area offers its own unique Downtown shopping experience. Visit the varied
selection of large stores or a growing number of small to mid-size specialty shops. Your shopping experience will
include visiting several shopping centers, mini-malls and traditional Main Street settings of the downtown
business districts.
The 1.3-million-square-foot Marketplace at Augusta features more than 30 nationally known retailers (including
Walmart, Sam’s, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, The Home Depot, Gap, Old Navy, Kohl’s, Dick’s Sporting
Goods, etc). The new Augusta Crossing shopping center opened in late 2007 with Lowe’s, Target, Best Buy,
Staples, etc. Other larger shopping centers include the Turnpike Mall, Augusta Plaza and Shaw’s Plaza.
Whatever your shopping pleasure, you are sure to discover it in the Capital Area.
The Capital Area offers a variety of year-round recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. Surrounded
by more than 30 lakes, ponds and the Kennebec River, the Capital Area is well suited for activities such as
canoeing/kayaking, boating, swimming, water skiing, sailing, jet skiing, ice skating and fishing. Visitors may rent
or buy canoes and kayaks from Belgrade Canoe & Kayak and Farmingdale Kayak and Canoe. Boat sales, rentals
and marine services are provided by area marinas, including Clark Marine in Manchester and Lakeside Motel and
Marina in East Winthrop. Public boat landings located on the Kennebec River can be found in Augusta,
Hallowell, Gardiner and Richmond, as well as on larger lakes in the region. White water rafting along the upper
Kennebec and other rivers is organized by rafting companies within the area such as North Country Rivers.
The Capital Area Recreation Association complex between Hospital Street and the Cony Road (beside the
Arboretum) offers venues for soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, horseshoes and walking/hiking/jogging.
The City of Augusta maintains the popular Bicentennial Park, a recreation and swimming area on a city pond for
Augusta residents.
The Kennebec Valley YMCA, with its two facilities (Augusta and Manchester), offers two pools, fitness centers/
indoor tracks, group exercise studios, racquetball, open gym, child watch services and a variety of programs that
serve all ages, infants to seniors.
The Capital Area also hosts seven outdoor tennis courts, six public golf courses, one private golf course, Augusta
Country Club and numerous parks, playgrounds and athletic fields.
New Nordic Center: Augusta has developed a new Nordic ski complex with separate trails for other recreation
activities on a large 160-acre forested tract in the center of the Capital.
The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce is a business association of some 600-plus businesses, industries
and organizations in the greater Augusta region, southern Kennebec County. The Chamber’s teamwork approach
is key in building a stronger economy, better business environment and higher quality of life for the 70,000
citizens in the 22-community area.
While government provides nearly four of every 10 jobs in the region, other large employers include major
distribution companies, health organizations, the state’s largest electric utility headquarters, financial institutions,
growing retail centers and statewide association headquarters.
Manufacturers include Alternative Manufacturing (computer components), Kenway Corp. (paper industry
products and boats), Kennebec Technologies (high-tech and space products) and a number of wood products
specialists.
The area is headquarters for the state’s largest electric utility, Central Maine Power Company, and includes major
distributors such as NRF Distributors (flooring), PFG NorthCenter, Progressive Distributors and Pine State
Trading (food service companies).
Health services in this central part of the state are provided by the Waterville and Augusta campuses of
MaineGeneral Health, which includes a teaching unit associated with Dartmouth Medical School. MaineGeneral
opened the state-of-the-art Alfond Cancer Care Center in Augusta in 2007 and plans to build a large modern
regional hospital in Augusta. Other health facilities include Veterans Administration Hospital, Home Resources
of Maine, HealthReach Network home services and a number of others.
Bright Future
The Capital area has grown significantly in retail business in the past decade with the addition of some major
new retailers and the redevelopment of others. Hannaford Supermarkets manages five large grocery stores and a
large distribution center in the Augusta Micropolitan. In 2009, Hannaford built the World’s First Platinum
LEED’s grocery store in the center of the capital. The Marketplace at Augusta is the largest open-air shopping
mall north of Boston, with about 1.3 million square feet of retail space and significant expansions planned. In late
2007, Augusta Crossing stores opened another 450,000 square feet of retail space, including Target and Lowe’s.
Consumer retail sales in the Augusta Micropolitan exceed $900 million.
Augusta boasts several modern business parks, Gardiner opened a very successful new industrial park in 1999,
and Winthrop has refurbished an old downtown woolen mill housing MaineGeneral Medical Care Center and a
mix of tenants.
FirstPark Hosts T-Mobile
The large telecommunications company, T-Mobile, selected FirstPark for the home of a new United States call
center where more than 850 Maine residents are employed. FirstPark is a high-tech business development center
created by the Kennebec Regional Development Authority (KRDA). Twenty-four cities and towns in Kennebec
and Somerset counties collaborated a few years ago to build “Maine’s premiere technology park” in Oakland,
just off I-95. A number of professional offices have been built in the park with opportunity to build out to some
3,000 quality jobs.
FirstPark seeks to entice high-tech, communications, research & development, insurance/finance and other new
economy businesses to help create a quality job center. FirstPark completed the $5 million business park site in
2001.
Interstate 95, the backbone of highway transportation in Maine, serves the Capital area. In addition, many other
major highways converge in the Capital, helping to make it a true center of commerce and travel.
Portland and Bangor are about a one hour’s drive away and Boston is less than a three-hour drive.
US Airways Express: Operated by Colgan Air, provides scheduled service to Boston and beyond from the
Augusta State Airport. Charter air service and flight instruction courses are available from Maine Instrument
Flight.
Augusta has a variety of trucking firms, which offer freight service to the area.
Concord Coach Line bus company recently opened a major transportation hub in Augusta, providing direct
transport to Boston. Vermont Transit buses serve Augusta; Kennebec Valley Transit provides local public bus
transportation and rental cars are available at Augusta State Airport and at several automobile dealers.
Augusta’s new Cushnoc Crossing bridge over the Kennebec River provides convenience for the city’s 25,000
daily commuters, as well as for the millions of trips annually to and from our nearby coastal regions.

Augusta, one of America’s most beautiful capitals, has been the capital city since 1827, seven years after Maine
was admitted to the Union. The Capitol Building is the centerpiece for this special city.
Located on both sides of the Kennebec River, Augusta is the center of employment, commerce and service for
Central Maine, and is the seat of state and county government. Augusta is a one-hour drive from Portland and a
less than three-hour drive from Boston. While the City’s population is only 18,560, it is the service center to a
large area of some 70,000 people – and more recently has become a retail shopping mecca for a population of
some 350,000 Maine residents.
Augusta is a city rich in history. From its early days as a Pilgrim trading post, the City has grown as an industrial
and trade center and has become a center for the region’s health and educational services.
Joint public and private efforts have resulted in the development of the Augusta Business Park, Augusta Civic
Center Complex, downtown redevelopment and regional retail shopping centers. A modern Augusta City Hall
Complex, including a renovated Old Fort Western (1754) museum complex, graces the banks of the Kennebec.
New Third Bridge Connects Coast: The State and Federal Highway departments in 2004 completed a new $30
million river crossing in Augusta that links Interstate 95 and the West Augusta business sector with the lessdeveloped East Side. In addition to providing opportunity for new business and residential growth, this third
bridge facilitates travel to several key coastal communities.
Recreational opportunities and cultural activities play an important role of life in Augusta - a great community, in
a convenient location, with friendly people and a stable and vigorous economy.
Where History and Progress Meet
Gardiner is a vibrant river front city featuring historical homes, a downtown with a new look and a fastexpanding business/industrial park. This city, which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2003, boasts more
buildings on the historic register than any other city in the area. Old homes are located in beautiful
neighborhoods and reflect the wonderful quality of life that Gardiner has to offer. A special treat is the Oakland’s
Mansion, built in 1836 as the home of descendants of Dr. Slyvester Gardiner, founder of the City. Two American
Presidents have stayed at the mansion.
Restoration and revitalization of Downtown Gardiner has added a new look to the city’s center. A modern high
school and middle school offer residents the finest in educational opportunities.
Gardiner has been successful in attracting new industry through an aggressive marketing campaign. The new
Libby Hill Business Park has attracted a number of major businesses in the region, assuring Gardiner’s
continuing contribution to the area’s economic growth.
Warmth & Hospitality, Antique Center
Hallowell, Maine’s smallest city, also rests on the banks of the Kennebec River. It was settled about 1762.
Although once a granite and lumbering community, the Hallowell of today features many delightful and
interesting antique shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants in the downtown business district. The small city is
classified as a National Historic District.
A state-operated boat landing is located on the south end of the city. It is the hub of activities during the summer
months as people launch their boats to cruise the beautiful Kennebec all the way to the ocean. It is said of
Hallowell that it retains the charm of yesteryear, the flavor of old-world simplicity and the warmth of oldfashioned hospitality. Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit this unique little Maine city.
Lakes and Industry
Winthrop, a long-time vacation destination for many, can boast of 12 lakes and ponds within its township. But
don’t be fooled into thinking that this is a sleepy little vacation community and nothing more!
This Town has enjoyed success in attracting new business in recent years and has seen existing businesses
expand. Winthrop has been undergoing a revitalization of its downtown. Developers have renovated a large old
woolen mill complex to house medical care facilities, as well as other commercial, retail and housing spaces. The
Town is also aggressively promoting the availability of its industrial park to new industry.
Historically a strong manufacturing community, Winthrop has seen a growth in the distribution and high-tech
fields. It is important to several surrounding towns as a place to work and shop.
The Winthrop Lakes Region also offers vacation fun with a number of lakeside cottages, campgrounds and
lodging facilities, plus a nice selection of restaurants. Visit this four-season community of gracious homes,
churches and friendly people.
Your Perfect Host
The Augusta Civic Center is one of northern New England’s most popular sites for conventions, meetings,
concerts and trade shows. The Civic Center, only an hour’s drive for three-quarters of the state’s population, is
adjacent to the Augusta/Belgrade exit of Interstate 95.
The Civic Center’s Paul G. Poulin Auditorium accommodates nearly 7,000 people for concerts, can serve as an
exhibit hall or function as a large banquet facility.
The Center has its own kitchens and can serve a varied banquet menu to groups as large as 2,000. There are 23
other meeting rooms for smaller functions. The luxuriously decorated North Wing features the Augusta Room for

Housing in the Capital Area is available to suit every taste and need. Median sales price of homes in Kennebec
County in 2009 was $130,000, although the range of homes can extend to luxury homes on beautiful lakeside
settings. Homes for the most part are located on heavily vegetated lots, whether in the urban areas or in nearby

Cultural opportunities within the Capital Area include Shakespearean plays performed at the Theater at
Monmouth throughout the summer and concerts performed by the Kennebec Performing Arts and the Augusta
Symphony Orchestra, plus year-round performances at the Waterville Opera House. Other venues for performing
arts include Johnson Hall in Gardiner, Gaslight Theater in Hallowell, the University of Maine at Augusta and
new state-of-the-art facilities at Cony High and Winthrop High School.
The Capital City recently opened a new $30 million Cony High School. Several other area communities are
upgrading schools to assure the best educational opportunities for our children.
School systems within the Capital Area are strongly committed to the educational, social and personal
development of our children. Our schools are noted for fine academic programs, which have prepared students
for the best colleges in the country. To meet the needs of a diverse student population, schools offer special needs
and honors programs, as well as alternative programs for students interested in exploring non-traditional

The University of Maine at Augusta is the state’s third largest post-secondary education school, serving students
