Maine - There’s More to Maine
Dear Parents:
The great outdoors is a way of life in Maine and
recreational activities on our lakes, rivers and in our
forests and trails are wonderful ways to experience our
beautiful state. Every child should have the opportunity to see what Maine has to offer, and a great way to
experience it is through camping.
Thank you for taking the time to review the many
children’s summer camps listed in the Directory of
Maine Summer Camps. We want children to have the
best possible camp outing so we encourage you to take
a look at the directory which offers useful information
to help you choose the camp that’s most suitable for
your youth.
Camping can be an adventure to remember, and I
hope you will encourage your child to try new things our camps have to offer like
canoeing, kayaking, biking, or hiking. We want their experience to be as meaningful
as it can be, because, not only is it about trying new things, it’s about meeting new
people and making memories that will last a lifetime.
Sincerely,
Paul R. LePage
Governor

WHY A MAINE SUMMER CAMP?
There’s no place quite like Maine
For more than 100 years, families have come to appreciate Maine’s summer camps
as a haven for kids to experience natural beauty and old-fashioned values.
Maine is more than a place—it’s a feeling you get as soon as you arrive. Suddenly,
the air’s a little fresher, the pines taller, the lakes clearer. You can hear the essence
of Maine in the cry of a loon, taste it in a fresh-caught trout, and watch the sun rise a
little earlier in Maine than anywhere else in America. Fact is, there’s more of Maine,
and more to Maine than the rest of New England combined: deeper forests, bigger
lakes, more rugged mountains, longer rivers and more
than 200 miles of coastline.
Taking fun seriously
Maine Summer Camps reflect all the possibilities of
Maine. They can be as traditional as a canoe trip and as
futuristic as rocketry. Among our more than 100 member
camps, many help develop skill in sports and outdoor
adventure; some teach a musical instrument; others may
inspire kids to plant the seeds of the next forest.
Whether public or private, all Maine camp directors
take a highly professional approach to their job. They
work to foster growth and instill the timeless values
of teamwork, responsibility and mutual respect, while
always putting your child’s well-being first. That means
carefully screening and training counselors, inspecting
and repairing facilities, and accommodating the varying needs of children. You’ll be glad to learn that Maine
was the first state to inspect youth camps for health and
safety, and the first to certify Trip Leaders.
Helping kids reach their full potential
Our high-tech lifestyle gives kids today opportunities never dreamed of before. But
many kids miss out on some of the most important ingredients in becoming healthy
adults: connection to nature; exercise and play; meaningful friendships and positive
adult role models.
Time spent at a Maine Summer Camp can restore balance to your children’s overscheduled days, teach life-long skills and allow friendships to flourish. It can help
build a foundation for a successful and happy life. Here are the key benefits to kids
of summer camp:
• Community & Friendship
Facebook friends are nice but they’re no substitute for real friends and mentors.
At Maine Summer Camps, kids make lifetime friends grounded in the experience of
living together and caring for each other in many ways. They learn social rules, acceptable behavior and leadership. And the positive role models kids find in their adult
counselors can have a lasting impact on their lives.

• Nature
“...a few weeks
spent in a well
organized
summer camp
may be of more
value
educationally
• Exercise
than a whole
Maine Summer Camps offer a range of activities that year of formal
foster enjoyment of physical activity and counteract the school work.”
effects of too much sitting and eating in our society today.
Kids have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors.
As Richard Louv makes clear in his bestseller, Last Child
in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature Deficit
Disorder, nature must be experienced to be fully appreciated. Living in a natural setting is a defining experience of
summer camp—especially in Maine.
It’s a lot easier to get motivated to be active when exciting, Charles Eliot,
new activities available in Maine’s beautiful outdoors are former President of
right at your doorstep…!

University
• Activities & Play
Maine Summer Camps offer wonderful structured
activities to meet your child’s individual interests, with ample time for kids to just be
kids—to engage spontaneously in games, free play, discussions and plain old hanging
out with each other.
• Learning
Maine camps provide kids with different kinds of learning from schools: they’re
more actively involved and more experientially engaged. Recent research has shown
that 95% of science is learned outside the classroom.
• Developing Initiative, Confidence & Leadership Skills
Summer camps are a microcosm of the larger world. They are highly participatory
communities where children can safely gain confidence and stretch their evolving
capacities for leadership and initiative. Often for the first time, kids experience caring adults outside their family and meet peers from outside their circle of friends. In
short, a Maine Summer Camp experience can be the opportunity of a lifetime for your
children: a concentrated period of growing and learning, personal development and
new friendships—along with the priceless gift of discovering of Maine’s unparalleled
natural beauty.

convenient on-line tool to narrow down your search for your child’s camp.
Parents & siblings: enjoy a real Maine vacation!
Why should the kids have all the fun? Combine your visit to your children at camp
with your next vacation, and discover all that Maine has to offer, from quaint seaside
villages to mountains, lakes and rivers, to shopping and summer stock theater. To

USING THIS DIRECTORY
This Directory lists all organized children’s camps in the State of Maine that
are members of Maine Summer Camps. A copy of the MSC Code of Ethics is
available on our website, www.mainecamps.org
CAMP LICENSING & ACCREDITATION
State Of Maine Licensing
The Maine Department of Human Services, Division of Health Inspections,
licenses youth camps under strict regulations and regularly inspects and certifies
camps. Some camps are additionally approved to operate as schools, conference centers and recreation programs. Contact camps directly for information
on their standards of operation as well as for additional information about their
programs.
American Camp Association Accreditation (ACA)
The ACA designation after the name of a camp listed in this directory means that
it is accredited by the American Camp Association, and is authorized to display the
Accredited Camp Seal. Camps are accredited following periodic extensive on-site
reviews for compliance with over 300 rigorous standards in six major areas - site
and food services, transportation, health and wellness, operational management,
and human resources.
For current information on a camp’s accreditation status, contact ACA by calling
1-800-428-CAMP or through their Web site at www.ACAcamps.org.
THE JUNIOR MAINE GUIDE PROGRAM (JMG)
The Junior Maine Guide Program is unique in the state of Maine. “Maine
Guides” are famous throughout the world for their mastery of camp craft, safety,
survival expertise and knowledge of the Maine woods. Through JMG, your child
can begin to learn these same skills – living comfortably and safely in the woods
in concert with the natural environment.
A number of camps offer the JMG program to their campers. The JMG certification is for youth ages 14-18, who work throughout the summer honing their
outdoor living skills. The summer culminates with a weeklong testing camp, where
they test their knowledge and skills to earn their Junior Maine Guide certification.
There are two introductory programs for younger children, Junior Maine Woodsman (ages 9-12) and Maine Woodsman (ages 12-14).
The JMG program is a joint project of Maine Summer Camps and the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. For more information see the MSC
website at www.mainecamps.org

How to measure value at camp? Ask the child, and they answer “fun”. Ask the adult
and they answer “values” and “healthy relationships”. Celebrating 93 summers, we
are committed to these terms and how easily they work together. Children want and
like a certain program structure. Whether through instructional and competitive sports
program, the rustic canoe and mountain trips, individual activities aimed at improving
lifelong skills, or many special activities, we love children and insure fun, values and
healthy relationships. We stay small (and fill early) because we stress community and
everyone knows each other. All campers have access to the Director, when Andy goes
to each cabin to say goodnight or when he enthusiastically spectates at activities.
