Nude Shimmer
Nude Shimmer Sparkling beige eye shadow is “universally flattering,” says makeup artist Dick Page. Taupe powder in the crease adds depth. By Meirav Devash photographed by michael thompson A good thriller uses the element of surprise to keep us on the edge of our seats. And this season, it looks as if makeup artists have stolen a page from Tom Clancy’s handbook, taking the established fall palette (charcoal eyes, burgundy lips) and giving it a twist with colors like teal, tangerine, and champagne. “It’s time to get away from the fall clichés,” says makeup artist Dick Page. “The key is to apply unpredictable shades with refinement and precision.” Another revelation: Unlike the usual somber fall tones, “these colors are playful,” says makeup artist Chrisanne Davis. “They’re happy, they bring warmth to the face, and they’re easy for any woman to pull off.” What a pleasant surprise. Teal Liner Teal is the new black—liner, that is. Page likes to trace it along the upper and lower lashes and give it a slight tick at the end. Silk radzimir top and wool bouclé hat by Louis Vuitton. Makeup colors: Wear Infinité Eye Shadow in Sandy Shores, HIP High Intensity Pigments Color Truth Cream Eyeliner in Teal, and Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour in Geranium by L’Oréal Paris. Model: Megan McNierney. Details, see Credits page. 201 Champagne Lips Bringing champagne to your lips needn’t involve popping a cork. Here, Page toned down the natural lip color with beige lipstick, then slicked on a champagne-hued gloss. “The warm sheen makes lips look fresh,” Davis says. Metallic satin gabardine dress with crystals and alpacawool bonnet by Vera Wang. Makeup colors: Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in Vanilla Truffle and Pure Color Crystal Gloss in Honey Glaze by Estée Lauder. Model: Reid. Details, see Credits page. Sage Shadow Even smoky eyes are going green—the current shade is gray-green and blended on lids and under the bottom lashes, then buffed slightly outward with a soft brush. Beaver-fur hat and latexand-metal necklace by Marni. Cotton leg warmers (worn as armbands) by Capezio. Makeup colors: Silky Eyeshadow Duo in Emerald Coast, Powder Blush in Mocha, and Ultra Wear Lip Colour in Nude Topaz by Chanel. Model: Jourdan. Details, see Credits page. 203 Rose and Gold Shadows Page calls the combination of rose and gold powders a “harmonious union.” He illuminates the brow bone with gold shadow and works deep rose-violet shadow into the lashes with a brush, blending well. “The overall effect is sophisticated but restrained,” he says. Cashmere cowl-neck by Michael Kors. Makeup colors: Colour Surge Eye Shadows Lucky Penny and Royal Rush, and Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in I’m Yours by Clinique. Model: Svetlana Lazareva. Details, see Credits page. Tangerine Lips “Women freak out at the thought of orange lip color,” Page says. “This is a gentle segue into the shade.” A tangerine gloss works on all skin tones—just choose a sheer formula so that your lips show through, Davis says. Mousseline-and-satin belted gown and silver fox-fur hood by J. Mendel. Makeup colors: Color Design Eye Shadow in Filigree and Color Fever Gloss in Burning Up by Lancôme. Model: Hannah Davis. Details, see Credits page. Bright Red Lips Cherry red lip color may be intense, but it can be worn as rich or as sheer as you like. Silk turtleneck, silk radzimir jacket, and gold-plated pendant on silk ribbon by Giambattista Valli. Wool felt hat with ribbon band by Stephen Jones for Giambattista Valli. Makeup colors: TruShine Lipcolor in Valentine Shine by Cover Girl. Model: Atong. Details, see Credits page. 206 Slate Shadow Rather than charcoal-rimmed eyes, which “can get trashy,” Page tempers black liner and mascara with a muted blue-gray shadow swept on the eyelids and under the bottom lashes. “The look is cool but not at all rock and roll,” he says. Satin dress, fox-fur shrug, and felt-and-rhinestone necklace by Lanvin. Expert Wear Eye Shadow Trio in Blue Slate, Define-A-Line in Soft Black, and Superstay Gloss in Golden Toffee by Maybelline New York. Model: Georgeta Dragan. Details, see Credits page. 207
