highlights of bangkok
Don’t miss out on Bangkok’s wealth of attractions, adventures and experiences
C
alled Bangkok by tourists and referred
to as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon (City
of Angels) by Thais, the city’s official name
is actually an impressive 64 syllables long
and roughly translates as follows: great city
of angels, the supreme repository of divine
jewels, the great land unconquerable, the
grand and prominent realm, the royal and
delightful capital city full of nine noble
gems, the highest royal dwelling and grand
palace, the divine shelter and living place
of the reincarnated spirits.
As this lengthy title suggests Bangkok
offers a wealth of culture, from the
breathtaking architecture of the Grand
Palace to inspiring Buddhist shrines.
Tour Bangkok’s labyrinth of canals on
a traditional long-tail boat and visit the
city’s energetic food markets. Home to
the Wat Pho School of Massage, Bangkok
is renowned for its expert therapists and
opulent spas. Enjoy an aperitif at one
of Bangkok’s chic rooftop bars before
dining on authentic Thai cuisine at one
of the city’s sumptuously decorated fine
dining restaurants.

BKK Art House or the two-floor H Gallery that is located in a converted

“For luxury brands head to Bangkok’s leading
department stores and large malls such as
Siam Paragon, Central World and MBK.
For traditional shopping pick from an array
of bustling markets, such as the Chatuchak
weekend market and Patpong night market.
Banyan Tree Bangkok offers a complimentary
personal shopper service for their guests.
The hotel’s shopping experts are just as familiar
with weekend markets as they are with the most
fashionable department stores in Bangkok.
These experts will accompany guests for three
hours as they hunt for special buys at the best
prices – they know the way, speak the language
and offer first-hand tips on what to select and
how to strike a great bargain. Banyan Tree also
offers a complimentary shuttle service in a sixpassenger tuk tuk to both Saladaeng skytrain
station and Lumpini underground station.
While the tuk tuk is one of the most fun and
recognisable forms of transport in Thailand, it is
also extremely practical – its small size allows
it to nip in and out of the traffic, making it much
quicker than a taxi.”

the siam hotel

Email: [email protected]
Address: The Siam, Thanon Khao, Vachirapayabal, Dusit,
Bangkok 10300, Thailand
Website: www.thesiamhotel.com
The Siam hotel is the brainchild of a collaborative effort between
Thai celebrity owner Krissada Sukosol Clapp and award-winning designer
Bill Bensley. Located on the city-side bank of the Chao Phraya in the
Royal Dusit district, just a stone’s throw from the Vimanmek Teakwood
Palace, The Siam is a Bangkok masterpiece. Styled around Thailand’s Art
Deco period this ‘small’ 39-suite hotel sits on three acres of some of the
city’s last developable riverfront. The word ‘small’, however, refers only
to the number of rooms, which start at 860 square feet with sweeping
archways that crest the 15 foot high ceilings. Complete with spa, gym, yoga
terrace and hammam-style bath house, two restaurants, a café and an
infinity pool overlooking the river, The Siam is a vast and verdant sanctuary.
Additionally, The Siam is proud to offer the world’s first luxury hotel
Muay Thai boxing ring as well as the city’s first pool villas. These villas
offer guests the ultimate privacy usually reserved for beach resorts.
Ten villas feature private terraces with views of their own garden courtyards
or the river. The 11th pool villa is the unique and premier category suite,
Connie’s Cottage. Sourced by silk tycoon Jim Thompson, Connie’s Cottage
is one of four ancient Thai teakwood houses, the remaining three forming
the signature Thai restaurant and cooking school, Chon. Next to Chon is
the contemporary chic Deco Bar & Bistro, which invites guests into a jazzy
atmosphere of superb cocktails and international comfort cuisine - a dining
experience to remember. At the end of the property, you will find a private
pier affording guests the freedom to explore the river in one of The Siam’s
two boats, conveniently bypassing any infamous Bangkok traffic.

SONGKRAN
APRIL 13-15, ANNUALLY
Songkran is a national holiday marking the Thai New Year. Traditionally Thais
pay tribute to their elders and also visit Wats to pray and give alms to monks.
Fragranced water is poured over Buddha images to bring good luck and
prosperity before being collected and poured gently over the shoulders of elders
as a mark of respect. This custom of pouring water has been reinterpreted by
younger generations who drench one another in colossal water fights. April is
the hottest month in Bangkok, with temperatures reaching 40°C, so a shower
of cold water comes as a welcomed relief from the heat. Should you wish to
participate, head to Kao San Road or the Silom district equipped with a good
water pistol. For more traditional celebrations visit the Phra Pradaeng district
where there are boat races, parades with floral floats and a flag ceremony.

WHEN BEST TO GO
The best time to visit Bangkok is between
November and March when the weather is dry
and temperatures are milder, though still hot.
After March temperatures begin to rise and in
June the rainy season begins and continues until
