About IWA
The Inland Waterways Association is a
national charity set up in 1946 to save the
waterways from dereliction and closure.
Over sixty years later, we are as strong as
ever and very much needed.
We campaign for the use maintenance, restoration and
development of the inland waterways.
Since we were formed we have been instrumental
in helping to save over 500 miles of canal and river
navigations, including the Llangollen, southern Oxford,
Ashton, Peak Forest, Basingstoke, Huddersfield Narrow,
Kennet & Avon, Droitwich canals and Warwickshire
Avon Navigation amongst many others.
IWA presents a strong and
authoritative voice to Government
and to navigation authorities on
waterway issues to ensure a fair deal
for all users. No other organisation
does more for boaters.
IWA supports waterway restoration and amenity
groups around the country, providing advice, helping
with funding, arranging insurance, introducing
volunteers, acting as national co-ordinator and taking a
lead with Government.
Our Waterway Recovery Group provides engineering
and planning and logistical support for many restoration
schemes around the country, including the current
restorations on the Cotswolds, Montgomery, Grantham
and Chesterfield canals and very many others. In fact
IWA is closely involved with supporting over 500 miles
of current restoration around the country.
With the advent of the new Canal & River Trust, and
the possibility of the Environment Agency
navigations being starved of funding, the inland
waterways continue to need a strong independent
voice. We need you to join IWA today, and help us
provide that voice and protect your interests.

Re-opened in 2011, the restored Droitwich
Barge and Junction Canals are monument to a
40-year campaign started by IWA.
