The gift shop, which also serves as the ticket booth for the museum, is still housed in the original fabricated building that opened when the Ocean Star held its Spud Party in 1997. Recently, it became necessary to replace several areas of the shop’s floor. Additionally, the building’s exterior and windows were weather stripped and caulked. The entire exterior was given a new coat of paint, restoring the building to its former appearance. In other maintenance projects at the museum, the Halliburton cement unit on the rig’s pipe deck was repainted earlier this year and new company logos will be applied. In addition, the GeoServices mud logging unit is being repainted and new logos will also be installed. Many thanks to Halliburton and GeoServices for this maintenance work! Ocean Star is again an OTC tour destination For the second consecutive year, the Ocean Star is featured as part of the 2005 Offshore Technology Conference’s (OTC) Tours of Area Attractions. OTC, the oil and gas industry’s premier event, is scheduled for May 2-5 this year. OTC attendees can register for a trip to the Ocean Star on either Saturday, April 30 or Sunday, May 1. The tour will include lunch at the Rainforest Café before visiting the Ocean Star and absorbing the day-to-day excitement of offshore drilling and production, marine transportation, environmental protection, construction, and pipelining. New exhibits and works in progress explain well completions and life on a rig With the new well completions exhibit donated by BJ Services are Greg Salerno, Manager of Advertising and Public Relations at BJ Services, and Mondell Garcia, Graphics Resource Administrator. Mondell designed the graphics for the exhibit. THE STAR, First Quarter 2005 BJ Services has completed its interpretive exhibit on well completions. The large 3D exhibit allows visitors to view the well completion process in stages, with rotating panels demonstrating how a hole drilled into the earth is transformed into a producing well. The Life on a Rig exhibit, funded by IADC Houston Chapter, is steadily progressing and should be completed soon. As reported earlier, the exhibit’s bunk beds were refurbished and two new wall dividers were constructed. A video system, also funded by IADC Houston Chapter, has been installed. The system continuously shows the 14 minute video, A Glimpse of Life Offshore, that was filmed on Transocean’s drillship Discoverer Enterprise. 5 Educational Outreach NASA Teachers Visit the Ocean Star On February 9 and February 16, a group of teachers from across the United States attended a special week-long workshop at NASA as part of the National Middle School Aerospace Scholar Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers program. An expert team comprised of engineers, educators, research scientists, and astronauts lead this unique national project. During the workshop, teachers learned to integrate NASA instructional materials into their classroom curricula and develop an Education Director, presented a program highlighting the kinds of information gathered by ROVs. Kristina also secured leading experts in the field of ROVs to provide the latest research to the group. Lou Cranek, President of the Institute for Robotics, spoke to the group on February 9 while Bob Curtis, Development Specialist for Oceaneering International, made a presentation to the group on February 16. Teachers also heard about the latest developments from the SERPENT Project. This research project, headquartered in Great Britain, teams deep sea oceanographers with various drilling facilities around the world for the purpose of collecting scientific data using the facility’s ROV when it’s not being utilized by the drilling operator. This successful program has already identified numerous marine species and behaviors never before seen by human eyes. Transocean Offshore, Inc., who supports the efforts of this project, introduced this group and its director to the OEC. Outreach information in the U.S. for this research project is now provided by the OEC. Teachers from across the U.S. toured the Ocean Star during a special week-long workshop at NASA as part of the National Middle School Aerospace Scholar Information Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers program. "action plan" to be implemented during the school year. Intensive teacher training sessions focused on information technology skills enhancements, including software training for graphic calculators, computer aided design, Global Positioning System/Global Information System (GPS/GIS), the Internet, and mathematics. Teachers also gained intensive training on the use of robotics by NASA engineers. In presenting issues related to Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), NASA and the project coordinator at San Jacinto College chose to showcase the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum’s ROV collection. Kristina Hardwick, OEC’s Galveston Independent School District’s first monthly tour of schools The Galveston Independent School District held its first monthly tour of schools on February 25. This tour included L.A. Morgan Elementary School and Ball High School. Participants met each school’s principal for a tour of their campus and heard an update on the district by the new superintendent, Dr. Lynn Hale. Parents, business leaders and community members were encouraged to attend. 6 OEC Education Director Kristina Hardwick and Ocean Star Operations Director Lisa White attended the tour. Kristina commented, "The programs offered by Galveston ISD are impressive, including some programs not offered by any other district in the Houston area such as the Read 180 program and a daily Computer Curriculum Corporation (CCC) lab. These programs chart and track a student’s performance in all areas of the curriculum and allow teachers to individually customize learning for every student." As science test performance scores are reviewed, GISD Superintendant Hale and the OEC will collaborate on future programs that can be offered to students through field trips to the Ocean Star and OEC’s educational outreach to target specific areas of science curriculum requiring additional support. www.oceanstaroec.com Educational Outreach OEC Education Director presents at Louisiana’s 10th annual Environmental Education Symposium The Governor’s Office of Environmental Education, in conjunction with the Louisiana Environmental Education Association, held its annual symposium on Friday, February 11, and Saturday, February 12, in Lafayette, LA. As a founding member of the Louisiana Environmental Education Commission, Kristina Hardwick, Offshore Energy Center’s Education Director, was asked to present a program. Her session on the use of microfossils in measuring global climate change was well received and commended for its balance of information and ease of use in both science and math classrooms. The theme for this year’s conference was Louisiana’s Wetlands. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to learn new, exciting strategies to take back to the classroom to begin new projects or incorporate into existing lesson plans. The new guest speaker series at the Ocean Star continues with an impressive line-up of knowledgeable speakers for this next quarter. Veronica, a college student, works primarily in the museum’s gift shop on weekends while attending classes during the week. She handles ticket and gift shop merchandise sales, as well as telephone calls from potential visitors seeking information about the Ocean Star. Additionally, she assists in processing and filling the increasing volume of mail orders to the gift shop. “I get to meet people from all over the world,” she says. “Most have interesting stories to tell about their travels. I’ve met people from Russia, Germany, Canada, Brazil and China.” She notes that her fluency in Spanish frequently comes in handy when greeting international visitors to the Ocean Star. A Galveston native, Veronica has been working at the Ocean Star since August 2001 when she was a senior at Ball High School in Galveston. Currently attending Galveston College while completing her core curriculum, Veronica plans to attend the University of Houston this fall to study accounting.
