Pella Valley South Newton CR Kennedy Mountain View Outlook The dramatic progress of the Central College men’s soccer team can perhaps best be measured by the depth of disappointment the Dutch felt after last year’s 12-7 campaign. In the first nine years of the program’s existence, a 12-7 record would have been cause for celebration. That all changed in 2002, with an influx of talent produced by coach Garry Laidlaw’s tireless recruiting efforts and a remarkable 16-2-1 campaign that included a magical 8-0-1 Iowa Conference run. But under since-changed league rules, all that got the Dutch was a berth in the four-team conference tournament which resulted in an early exit and a gnawing feeling of a job left incomplete. A beefed-up schedule and a heavy dose of injuries had much to do with last season’s won-loss record. But Laidlaw found reassurance in his players’ refusal to accept excuses. “The players were disappointed in 12-7 when we met after the season,” he said. “That was a good sign. It shows me the guys have their sights set higher than just having a winning season. They want to win the conference championship Men’s Soccer 7 they were denied two years ago. And they’ve worked hard all summer to make that happen. “The hunger is there, the desire is there, and 12-7 is not what we’re shooting for.” Laidlaw thinks the Dutch have the ingredients that loftier ambitions require. Seven starters return, including three allIowa Conference selections. But in an increasingly competitive league, the Dutch find they’re not alone in confidently eyeing the top prize. Wartburg won last year’s title and is the clear favorite with Luther, Loras, Simpson, Central and possibly Buena Vista in the mix. Forward After a 10-goal, 24-point rookie campaign, Nick Mohwinkle had a solid seven-goal effort last season and is a likely starter again as a junior. The other forward spot is up for grabs, but Laidlaw is sensing a breakout year from senior Jim Babcock. “He’s played mostly as a midfielder, but he can dribble and he can score,” Laidlaw said. “I think he could break through as a senior much like Mike Augustin did for us last year. Mike didn’t get to play much before his senior year, either, and Jim’s using him as a model.” There are some potential contributors in the freshman class, most notably Michael Reilly, who scored more than 30 goals last year for Gilbert High School. Laidlaw will also take a look at Michael Taylor, a Cedar Rapids Washington graduate, and Matt Terlouw of Pella. The Dutch could get some help from a surplus of midfielders as well. Midfield Talent abounds in the midfield. Senior Kyle Halfpop was one of the key elements in the Central men’s soccer program’s turnaround and the two-time first-team all-conference pick is entering his second season as a team captain. He had seven goals and six assists last season. Also back is second-team all-league selection Tim Dobberfuhl, who had three goals and four assists. Junior Eric McDonald earned a starting spot, only to go down with injury early last season, but that allowed senior Jordan Kologe to gain additional experience. Senior Nathan Weir saw extensive action as well and sophomore Brett Anderson could also contend. Freshman Chris Geirut carries a lengthy resume from Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids where he knew little but success, winning a state high school championship as well as a club state cup crown. Tyman Wiley of Palo, a graduate of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and Blake Scott of Norwalk have solid prep credentials as well. And Cody Stoermer, whose Iowa City West squad captured the 2002 state crown before finishing second a year ago, was tabbed as captain of the state alltourney squad both times. Jason Winslow of Loveland, Colo. is a bit of an unknown who may merit consideration as well. “I feel pretty good about our midfield options,” Laidlaw said. “It may allow us to move some players around just to get our strongest 11 in the game.” Fullback Two starters return, including first-team all-conference pick Conrad Vernon. A junior, Vernon is joined by veteran senior Brandon Thomsen, a team co-captain. Sophomore Ryan Petersen was a late-season addition to the varsity and will battle to stay there this year. Central hopes to regain the services of sophomore Eric Bentzinger, a highly touted recruit who was expected to quickly claim a starting job last year. Nearing recovery from a knee injury when he arrived, Bentzinger went down with a major injury to the other knee in the preseason and that kept him sidelined another 10 months. He’s anxious to give soccer at least one more shot this fall and could provide an unexpected boost. In the freshman class, Laidlaw likes Cailean Bailey of Jacksonville, Ill. and Jesse Martinez of Cedar Rapids, a Linn-Mar High School grad. Alex Keller of Cedar Falls could crack the varsity as well. Goalkeeper Seniors Andy Quigg and Jarin Schmidt shared time in goal last year and will likely do so again. Quigg got the larger portion of action, posting a 9-5 record while giving up 1.43 goals per game with 89 saves. Schmidt was 3-2, surrendering 0.66 goals with 38 saves. Providing backup will be freshman Trent Payne. Staying healthy is an obvious priority after seeing the impact of injuries on last year’s club. “We lost our top freshman (Bentzinger) to an ACL injury and that forced us to move players out of position,” Laidlaw said. “It just had a domino effect. We didn’t have much depth and we got a little exposed.” The razor-thin margin for error was reflected in last year’s season-ending 3-0 loss in the conference tournament to Simpson. It marked the first time in two years that the Dutch were defeated by more than two goals, an all-too frequent occurrence in the program’s early years. 8 Men’s Soccer “We do have more depth this year,” Laidlaw said. “That will allow us to try a couple of different formations.” That should help increase the number of victory celebrations in 2004, as will some solid upperclass leadership. “Kyle Halfpop is in his second year as a captain and Kyle has already shown some positive changes this year in how to be a leader,” Laidlaw said. “Brandon Thomsen is our other captain and he has always shown excellent leadership. He brings more of a vocal leadership component that was maybe missing last year.” Dobberfuhl has been designated an alternate captain and Laidlaw likes the effort he’s putting into that role as well. The Dutch will need to draw on that leadership to succeed against an imposing lineup of opposition. Aside from the Iowa Conference travels, Central is journeying to Colorado Springs to take on highly regarded Colorado College and traditionally competitive George Fox (Ore.). Also on the schedule is perennial NCAA Div. III playoff contender Nebraska Wesleyan. “It’s a great schedule,” Laidlaw said. The Iowa Conference champion again receives a berth in the NCAA tourney and while that’s etched firmly in the Central program’s to-do list, it’s not Laidlaw’s focus yet. “The guys would like to get that first conference title under their belt before they worry about the playoffs,” he said. “We want to establish this program as a contender year-in and year-out. This is not just a one-year challenge.” Men’s Soccer 9 CENTRAL COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY NCAA Division lll national championships 1974 Football 1981 Women’s cross country 1982 Women’s track 1988 Softball 1991 Softball 1993 Women’s basketball Softball 2000 Volleyball 1998 Volleyball 2003 Softball 1999 Volleyball NCAA Division lll individual championships 1982 Lisa Broek, Nancy Cisar, Paula Casey, Marcie Thurn Women’s track, 4 x 100 meter relay Marcie Thurn Women’s track, long jump 1983 Lisa Broek, Nancy Cisar, Marti Haan, Marcie Thurn Women’s track, 4 x 100 meter relay 1984 Nancy Cisar Women’s track, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash Lori Sears Women’s track, 400 meter hurdles, long jump 1985 Brian Goldsworthy Men’s golf 1986 Lori Sears Women’s track, 100 meter hurdles 1987 Tim Hackel Wrestling, 126 pounds 1991 Chad Beck Wrestling, 126 pounds Jon McGovern Wrestling, 167 pounds 1992 Jon McGovern Wrestling, 167 pounds 1994 Craig Cantrall Men’s track, high jump 1997 Zech Schiebout Men’s track, discus Appendix 1 2000 Nate Koerselman, Adam Hartford, Tommy Tavegia, Chris McCullough Men’s track, 4 x 400 meter relay 2001 Katie Brees Women’s indoor track, long jump Chris McCullough, Adam Hartford, Tony Brownlee, Tommy Tavegia Men’s track, 4x400 meter relay Peter Wagner Men’s track, decathalon 2002 Chris McCullough, Matt McCombs, Peter Wagner, Tony Brownlee Men’s track, 4 x 400 meter relay 2003 Peter Wagner Men’s track, decathlon 2004 Raegan Schultz Women’s track, heptathlon NCAA Division lll players of the year 1985 Brian Goldsworthy Men’s golf 1998 Abbie Brown Volleyball 1995 Emilie Hanson Women’s basketball 1999 Abbie Brown Volleyball 2000 Donell Hotze Softball Candace Wilson Volleyball 2003 Libby Hysell Softball Honda Div.
