A Day with The Ring
Saturday 3 December
Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen is a rich subject for enquiry and discovery. With this in mind, Renaissance Tours will present an all-day
symposium - A Day with the Ring - during each of the three cycles of the 2016 Melbourne Ring. Conceived and chaired by Peter Bassett and
involving experts in various fields, these symposia will be open to the public and will examine the Ring and its staging from many perspectives.
Program
Presenters
Peter Bassett
Dr Peter Bassett was Dramaturge and Artistic Administrator
for the 2004 Adelaide Ring and is a regular contributor to
Opera Australia’s programs. He has published widely on
Wagner’s works, recorded talks on the Ring for Decca, and
has lectured in Europe, North America and throughout
Australia and New Zealand. For two decades Peter served
in the Australian diplomatic service and, since 2001 he has
led more than 30 overseas tours for Renaissance Tours.
9:30 am The Evolving Stage
Peter Bassett The changing focus of Ring productions from
Wagner’s original staging (recreated on film) to productions of the
1950s and ‘60s, the pursuit of realism through cinematic techniques,
and the use of contemporary references and parody.
10:30 am Morning tea
11:00 am Wagner’s Theatres
Peter Bassett Wagner’s revolutionary ideas extended beyond the
creation of his works to the practicalities of performing and staging
them. Peter Bassett will show that the Bayreuth Festival Theatre
was the result of an evolutionary process involving not only Wagner
but also King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the architect Gottfried Semper.

Peter Bassett During the many years of the Ring’s gestation,
Wagner changed his mind about Siegfried’s place at the heroic
centre of the drama, and Brünnhilde came to occupy this position.
Do attempts by stage directors to restore Siegfried to the centre
of things contradict one of Wagner’s most important ideas?
