Welcome to the Noosa Jazz Festival

benefit to the host community and will
assist us to reach our goal to double
annual overnight visitor expenditure
from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.
Tourism is one of the four pillars of
the Queensland economy. A key theme
of the recently launched Destination
Success 20-year plan for Queensland
tourism is to identify and promote
iconic experiences throughout
Queensland’s many destinations.
The Noosa Jazz Festival is supported
through Tourism and Events
Queensland’s Regional Development
Program, which to date has invested
more than $23.5 million across 1,091
Queensland events.
By working hand-in-hand through an
industry-government partnership,
we have a plan to secure the long
term future of Queensland’s tourism
industry.
The government is proud to support
the Noosa Jazz Festival through
Tourism and Events Queensland,
recognising the importance of
events in driving visitors to
regional areas and showcasing
Queensland’s destination
experiences.
I would like to thank the local
community, volunteers and event
organisers for their terrific efforts in
delivering this event for the Sunshine
Coast.

Welcome to the Noosa
Jazz Festival!
Hello and welcome to the 23rd annual
Noosa Jazz Festival!
We are very excited to be welcoming
you to the Noosa Jazz Festival this year
and to having you join us in celebrating
the start of Spring and all things jazz!
For the first timers and those of you
who have been coming back regularly
we are looking forward to spending the
next 4 days with you.
This year, the Festival includes some
exciting new additions and the Festival
Village located at the Noosa Lions Park
will be the heart of the Festival playing
host to the Main Stage Concerts, the
Master Class Series, the Talent Search
Competition, Youth in the Jazz as well
as being the departing point for the
famous Jazz River Cruises.
At the heart of the festival is the
‘Festival Village’, offering 2 stages that
present over 45 performances including
main stage performances, workshops,
master classes, 2 bars, Kids Zone,
VIP marquee, food and market stalls,
Youth in the Jazz as well as being the
departing point for the famous Jazz
River Cruises.
The Festival Village will take on the laid
back lifestyle of the Noosa region and
will embrace a picnic theme with stylish
outdoor furniture brought back to life
by local business Sit Down Charlie. You
can expect rugs, cushions and lounge
chairs where you can sip on a glass of
your favourite drink while relaxing and
enjoying the sounds of jazz – you can
even try your hand at a spot of Croquet
with the Noosa Heads Croquet Club!
The legendary Tastings on Hastings will
again take place on Hastings Street
on Friday 5th September. Tastings on
Hastings is the only day of the year
where Hastings Street is closed to
traffic with restaurants setting up their
tables on the street.
With limited tickets available, those
lucky enough to have secured a seat will
be treated to appetite appealing menus
by Aromas, Berardo’s (both Berardo’s
on the Beach and Berardo’s Restaurant),
Bistro C, Café Le Monde, Noosa Beach
House by Peter Kuruvita, Noosa Heads
Surf Club, Miss Money Penny’s, Rococo,
Season Restaurant and the Noosa Jazz
Festival Pop Up Restaurant. The event
is launched with the annual Zinc FM
Jazz Parade down Hastings Street.
The ‘Legends Series’ - where legends of
the Australian Jazz and Music Industry
entertain you in an intimate dining
experience – is back once again. The
2014 ‘Legends Lunch’ will be held at the
RACV Resort and will feature a 2-course
lunch menu, complimentary beverage
on arrival and show with Steve Clisby
famed from Channel Nine’s talent show
The Voice. A new addition in 2014 will
be the ‘Legends Dinner’ series with
guests dining alongside Vince Jones and
band while enjoying a delicious 3-course
dinner meal prepared by Noosa Springs
Resort.
Other exciting events will take place
at official venues including Rococo,
Laguna Arcade, Berardo’s, Noosa Blue
Resort, Café Le Monde, Miss Money
Penny’s, The J, South Pacific Resort
and Noosa Springs. A range of fringe
events will also continue throughout
Noosa including Traditional Jazz at
the Bicentennial Hall (not managed
by the Noosa Jazz Festival organising
committee).
A special thank you to our sponsors,
accommodation providers and
volunteers for their incredible support
- without which the Noosa Jazz Festival
would not be possible. A very big thank
you to the amazing team who work year
round on bringing the festival to you –
and lastly – a huge thank you to You for
coming - the 23rd Noosa Jazz Festival
promises to be an exciting 4 days and
we look forward to having you at the

entertained and informed us for decades with his everevolving elite group of musicians.
Vince Jones’ music includes original songs and beautiful
contemporary versions of jazz standards. His themes are
often love, injustice, peace and anti-greed. The heart of his
work lies at the crossroads of Afro-American blues and the
melodies of the Celtic folk tradition. The songs he chooses
– written by him or by others – always make an original,
personal statement.
As in the best jazz and improvising styles, Vince Jones
understands that the moment of creativity occurs at the
point of execution as much as it does at the time of the
original composition. He walks that line with finesse and
respect.
Since his career began more than 30 years ago, Vince
Jones has released 14 albums to critical acclaim. Though
never a mainstream artist, he has always been popular,
demonstrated through album sales figures and audience
numbers. He has toured extensively in Europe and the
US and continues to play regularly to loyal fans around
Australia.
Vince Jones’ latest offering is Modern Folk, a compilation
of songs recorded live on different stages around Australia,
released through Vitamin Records. He records and tours
with a band comprising musicians who are highly regarded
in their own right, including Matt McMahon on piano, Simon
Barker on drums and Ben Waples on bass.
Steve Clisby
Steve Clisby’s entire life has been a musical journey. At the age of
six, the California-born singer was inspired by his mother’s record
collection – the songs she listened to, he listened to. After deciding
that making great music was what he was born to do, he taught
himself piano, later taking lessons and also learning the saxophone.
In the 1970s, Steve followed the Hendrix trail to Europe with friends
– and there they stayed. Their group, American Gypsy, eventually
made Holland their base and for two decades, they shared every
stage in Europe with some of the greatest names in music.
A record deal and release of the eponymous American Gypsy
resulted in a string of hits, numerous television appearances and
cemented their position as the African American soul voice in
Europe.
In his long and distinguished career he has collaborated with
award-winning producer/writer, Narada Michael Walden (Madonna,
Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey) and Errol Brown (Hot Chocolate)
with Groove Armada re-recording the track Inside Out as Whatever
Whenever and Neneh Cherry recording Steve’s track Golden Ring on
her album Man.
His first three local albums were recorded live and captured the
power and beauty of his memerising live performances.
In 2013, millions of Australians embraced Steve’s journey and
soulful voice when he made it through to the semi-finals of ‘The
Voice.’ His performances of classic tracks including Walking in
Memphis, Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Baby and Just the Two of
Us had the judges alternating between dancing and tears.
Steve’s current recording, Soul Story, was released in early 2013.
Steve’s journey is one of the perseverance to never, ever give
up and that’s what makes him one of the most exciting voices in
Australia. A voice filled with decades of experience, heartache and
beauty. A voice that truly lifts the soul.

Emma Pask
Her talent was spotted by James Morrison during one of his regular visits to high schools when she was just 16. She first sang
with his band that night and has been touring with Morrison around Australia and overseas, ever since.
While Emma’s voice and style are unique, and individually her own, her performances are reminiscent of the classic era of jazz,
when swing was top of the charts. By request, in 2006, Emma performed the Bridal Waltz for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s
wedding, also performing through the evening with a swinging set of big band numbers with the Sydney All Star Big Band.
Earlier that same year, Emma was awarded the Mo Award for “Jazz Vocalist of the year”. Emma has been a regular guest on
national TV shows like Hey, Hey Its Saturday, the Midday Show, Good Morning Australia, the Today show, and has also sung to
VIP audiences including the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Princess Mary of Denmark, and the Prime Minister of Australia.
You’ll often hear Emma’s voice on numerous Television Commercials, movie soundtracks and voice over work. She has
performed to audiences of up to 80,000 people, Sung in London at The Queen Elizabeth Hall with the BBC Concert Orchestra,
In China with The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, In Auckland with the NZ Philharmonic, With Barbara Morrison, Don Burrows,

ollowing the enormous success of her first 2 albums, “Emma” and “This Madness called Love”, Emma has released her third
solo album, “Some other Spring”. Despite her achievements and the international recognition of her talent, Emma retains her
natural, refreshing and unpretentious, positive approach to life. James Morrison says “Whilst it’s fashionable to be a jazz singer
these days, she’s the real thing!”
Grace Knight
Grace Knight is one of the most enduring talents in Australian
music. With Aria nominations and chart topping recordings in
each of the past three decades, her career spans over thirty five
years. Acclaimed for her live performances, Grace is one of the
finest interpreters of popular music in Australia today. Knight’s
spellbinding performances touch the soul and lift the heart.
Her magical presence connects with audiences of all ages like
few others can.
She blew audiences away throughout the eighties as lead singer
of internationally successful band Eurogliders. She captivated
fans with her “Manic Ballerina” stage persona and Eurogliders
took the charts by storm.
As a solo artist she transformed herself from Pop Princess to
Queen of Cool and lit up the screen in ABC TV’s award winning
mini-series, Come In Spinner.
Her most recent album, Willow, was nominated for an ARIA
in 2008 and she has just finished recording her seventh solo
album, Keep Cool Fool, which is scheduled for release in April
2012. Never one to slow down and rest on her laurels, Grace
released her critically acclaimed autobiography, Pink Suit for a
Blue Day in 2010.

Australian Army Band
Brisbane
Known as one of the finest military
bands in Australia, the Australian
Army Band Brisbane provides music
for regal, vice-regal, state and
ceremonial occasions, performs at
festivals, gives concerts and presents
precision marching displays, as well as
fulfilling its military role.
Jan Preston
Galapagos Duck
Charles Darwin’s observations in the
Galapagos Islands in 1835 were crucial
to the development of his theory of
natural selection explaining evolution…
that only those best adapted to their
environment, will survive. In 1969, a
group of jazz musicians formed to play
the winter season at The Kosciusko
Ski Chalet in Charlottes Pass. They
named this new band Galapagos Duck
(in deference to a Spike Milligan sketch
rather than our famed scientist).
Along with trailblazers like the late,
great Graeme Bell and then stars
like Don Burrows, George Golla and
the Morrison brothers, Galapagos
Duck put Australian Jazz on the map.
They’ve won national and international
awards… played throughout America,
Asia and Europe…performed all the
big jazz gigs from Montreux to the
American Musexpo and the Singapore
International Jazz Festival… and
played and recorded with the likes
of Nina Simone and Ray Charles,
James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel,
Don Burrows, Winifred Atwell, The
Australian Dance Theatre and The
Australian Ballet.
The band’s latest lineup includes one
of the originals - sax player Willy Qua
(who harks back to 1973) - along with
bass player/guitarist John Conley who
boasts a mere 33 year association
with the band. Then there’s renowned
saxophonist Richard Booth (sax,
clarinet, flute and steel drum), the
young and truly exciting drummer Saia
Hanlon and Wil Sargisson (keys),who
was only born after the original
Galapagos Duck had been playing The
Basement for 11 years!
This latest line-up seems to have
endowed the band with a new impetus
and a reinvigorated mission to tour,
both here and overseas.
The new Galapagos Duck is nothing less
than a powerhouse. The band has now
survived for over 40 years, evolving all
that time, adapting to ever-changing
environments at every turn…
Darwin would have loved ‘em!
Jan Preston’s stunning ability as a
boogie woogie and ragtime piano
player is matched by a richly resonant
voice and a joyful and communicative
personality, which leaves audiences
mesmerized.
Winner of 7 Music Awards, Jan plays
festivals and concerts throughout NZ,
Australia, the UK, Europe and China,
tours her own shows and writes music
for films and television, such as the
theme to Australian Story.
Known as Australia’s foremost Boogie
Piano player and composer, Jan
was enormously popular as a guest
performer on ABC TV’s Spicks and
Specks.
She is known for her sensational
“cross-over” styles of singing in
several genres from jazz and cabaret
to world music and classical.
Her vocal flexibility and beautiful
quality are testimonies to her many
years of training and performing and
teaching.
She has a compelling stage presence
and connects with her audiences with
charm and flare.
JOHN MURRAY of “New Melbourne

A singer with a voice that’s been
described as chocolate: rich, dark and
smooth.
Greg Gould
Arguably one of the most gifted
vocalists ever to emerge from the
Central Coast NSW, Greg Gould burst
onto the national scene at the end
of 2013 when he and his dynamic
six-piece outfit The Chase enthralled
audiences with a succession of jawdropping performances on Australia’s
Got Talent.
Before making his phenomenal impact
on Australian television, Greg honed
his craft for two years as a headline
performer on several international
cruise liners, performing to packed
crowds in the live music scene and
showcasing his unmistakable energy
in the live theatre world.
Laura Bernay is a versatile performer
with talents as a singer, flautist and

Feel The Manouche
Manouche is a term derived from the
Romany gypsies of Europe, what we in
Australia call gypsy jazz.
This fine band has been put together
by it’s individual members as an
exercise in small group swing.
Feel the Manouche has a ‘world
music’ feel. Through it’s use of double
bass, guitar, accordion & fiddle, the
band achieves a strong melodic
groove that can take on gypsy waltzes,
swing jazz, choro and many other
flavours of music from our diverse
planet. We invite you to sit back and
‘Feel the Manouche’.
Featuring: George Washingmachine
- violin, ukelele & vocal; Arthur
Washington - guitar; Clare O’Meara
- acccordion, violin & vocal; Stan
Valacos - double bass
Ingrid James is one of Queensland’s
leading Jazz Vocalists appearing
regularly in Jazz festivals throughout
the country including the Brisbane
Festival (Spiegeltent), Jazz
Queensland’s Valley Jazz Festival,
Devonport Jazz Festival Tasmania,
Manly Jazz Festival Sydney, Noosa
International Jazz Festival, Melbourne
Women’s International Jazz Festival,
Gold Coast, Bellingen, Kiama and
Ambiwerra Jazz Festivals to name but
a few.
Her performances on ABC national
television including soloist with the
Queensland Orchestra together
with appearances in European and
US venues such as The Blue Note in
Monte Carlo, the Jazz Bakery in Los
Angeles and the Pizza Express, Soho &
606 Clubs in London have confirmed
a reputation described by the
Sydney Morning Herald as “fearless
and gifted-a Jazz singer for whom
the songs are there to be teased,
flirted with and milked for all their
improvisational potential”.
MIKE LONGHURST. Mike for many
years played with the wonderful
“Frank Traynor Jazz Preachers” - on
clarinet.
JOHN WITHERS, John has played with
many bands and been on numerous
recordings in his long career, both in
Europe and Australia, including the
famous “Rod Mason Band”, “George
Webb’s Dixielanders,” “Society
Syncopators,” and “Hotter than Six/
Fireworks Jazz Band,” to name a few on banjo and ukulele.
The other members of the band
comprise:
LEE WILSON - on slide guitar.
STEVE TRELOAR - on mandolin.
BRENDA WITHERS - on bass.
One of the great advantages of
settling in Noosa is the veritable
smorgasbord of fine musicians living
locally, this resulted in the forming
of “All Strung Out Jazz” which is
a unique blend of mostly string
instrumentalists, and has all the
excitement of the early New Orleans
string bands, (i.e. Six and Seven
Eighths String Band) and with Lee and
Steve resulting in something unique
with a touch of the Australian bush.
The Royal Jellies
This rabble snaps a hypercoloured homage to the
polyphonic sounds of an era
when jazz was king.
Modern Melbourne meets
the New Orleans old school
- frontline horns duke-it-out
while the rhythm section cooks
up raucous grooves in a neovintage stew of pop hooks,
trad jazz and straight-up
songwriting.

SCREAM Big Band
Milan
Ange Takats
Former foreign correspondent turned folk singer Ange Takats has a voice that is
able to coat with sugar, crush with sadness and cut through to the soul of a song.
Named ‘Folk/ Singer Songwriter’ at the 2013 Queensland Music Awards, her
second album ‘Arva’ blends 60s folk with 30s jazz. Strangely enough, Ange’s career
began in Bangkok where she worked as a journalist by day and singer by night. Her
worldly adventures and natural gift for storytelling have allowed the songstress to
develop a unique performance style - weaving lighthearted travel tales between
darkly emotive songs.
Recently named “The Next Big Thing”
by The Sydney Morning Herald,
Sydney-based soul artist Milan
releases the video of her new single
Promises taken from her debut EP
Glassy Eyes. With the signing of artist
management, booking agent and a
publishing deal under her belt the
future looks bright for the 23 year old.
The past 18 months have been
eventful for Milan. With a planned trip
to the USA in June, fans can expect
the release of more music and live
shows in the near future.
Juzzie Smith
Juzzie is a walking, talking, singing
example of how it pays to follow your
heart. Not that money is the point
here - far from it. The real point
is that Juzzie is one of those truly
creative souls who makes a living
out of doing something he absolutely
loves.
As a young father, tired of late nights
on the pub circuit, Juzzie made a
conscious decision to leave the pubs
and take his music to the people and
the streets. So he took up busking,
mostly at local markets on the NSW
north coast, drawing bigger and more
enthusiastic crowds each time he
played. In this way Juzzie created a
reputation for himself, becoming a
true grassroots phenomenon. He is
now also a festival circuit favorite,
loved for his energetic and aweinspiring live performances.
The SCREAM Big Band (Sunshine
Coast Retired and ex Armed Forces
Musicians) was first formed as a way
for old mates to get together to play
some music and have a yarn. They
then decided to take their music to
the public and since then have been
performing sell out show’s all over the
coast.
The band over the last few years have
backed such artists as Liam Burrows,
Bobby Valentine, Jackie Cooper and
John Morrison.
They bring together some of the old
Big Band Classic’s from Miller and
lift the room with music from the
amazing Gordon Goodwin.
The Band loves bringing the Big band
Sound to the public and at the same
time keeping friendships of a life time
together.
Nambour Christian College
Stage Band
The Nambour Christian College Stage
Band has gained a reputation as one
of the Sunshine Coast’s best student
bands, regularly placing highly in the
Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.
The band performs frequently for
our College community and have
competed in the Prestige Music
Fest (Brisbane 2011), achieving a
Gold award. 2013 highlights were
a successful tour to Hawaii, (where
the students as part of our Wind
Symphony were awarded silver at the
Pacific Basin Music Festival), and the
opportunity to perform with James
Morrison for the Schagerl Brass
workshop on the Sunshine Coast.
Their director, Phil Smith is a graduate
of the Queensland conservatorium
majoring in percussion. Well known
across the Sunshine Coast as an
educator and conductor and now
entering his tenth year at the college,
he has overseen our music groups
continue to go from strength to
strength.

Carl Wockner
Beaten Bodies
There’s something about Carl
Wockner’s music that simply exudes
peace. It might originate in the
modest acoustic guitar strums that
contently chug along in his earthy,
feel good songs, or it might have to
do with his naturally warm and soulful
voice. However you connect with
Carl’s music, chances are you know
this small town acoustic pop artist
from Bundaberg, Queensland is onto
something.
Beaten Bodies formed in 2012 to quench a mutual thirst for funk and R&B, their
debut EP saw the band touted as a fresh new group to watch. Inspired by the
current musical climate and with a growing need to experiment their music has
evolved since those early days and now Beaten Bodies occupy a space somewhere
between the dank hip hop beats of The Robert Glasper Experiment and the neo
soul grooves of Erykah Badu.
With the release of Crayon Days April
13th 2014, it’s not overly ambitious to
predict that Carl’s music may soon be
as recognizable as his massive dreads.
The band return from hibernation with their brand new offering ‘The Royal Road’
out 09 June 2014. ‘The Royal Road’ is a giant step forward for the band. With a
sound soaked in lush harmony and their own brand of lilting groove, this collection
of songs beautifully demonstrates the group’s forward motion and innovative
approach to their craft. The new single ‘Monkey Grip’ follows on from ‘Crowns’, a
song that received healthy radio play and created a strong demand for the soonto-be-released final product.
Beaten Bodies have played alongside the likes of Ngaiire, Sticky Fingers, Milan, Sex
On Toast and Okenyo. ‘The Royal Road’ is available on 09 June 2014 via iTunes,
with physical copies available at the band’s shows.
