Asian carriers start spending
at Farnborough
AirAsia X pens major deal for brand new Airbus A330neo...
A
sia's fast-growing airlines
have been among the big
spenders at this week’s
Farnborough Air Show.
AirAsia X, the Malaysian longhaul low-cost carrier, yesterday
became the first airline customer
of the brand new Airbus A330neo
aircraft, which was officially
launched at Farnborough on
Monday.
Loyal Airbus customer Tony
Fernandes signed a deal for up
to 100 fuel-efficient A330neos,
including 50 firm orders and 50
options, in a deal worth US$13.8
billion at list prices. This deal
extends AirAsia's total Airbus orders
to more than 500 aircraft, including
A320s, A330s, A330neos and
A350s.
“We have been encouraging
Airbus to launch this new version of
the A330 for some time now,” said
Fernandes, co-founder of AirAsia X.
”I am pleased that they are offering
this choice and bringing us the
aircraft we truly need to develop
further our low-cost long-haul
model.”
China’s airlines also got in on the
action earlier this week, with both
Okay Airways and start-up Zheijang
Loong Airlines placing significant
orders on Monday.
Okay Airways, which is based in
Beijing, has purchased six Boeing
737 MAX 8s and four standard

Boeing 737-800s, valued at US$980
million at current list prices. The deal
will also see Okay Airways convert
five B737-800s from a previous

Zhejiang Loong Airlines has signed
a Letter on Intent to acquire 20
CS100 aircraft from Bombardier,
worth US$1.3bn.

Costa Concordia raise commences

raise the Costa Concordia.
The ship is slowly being lifted by
pumping air into tanks attached
to its hull, having been resting
on platforms since being hauled
upright in September 2013. The
refloating is expected to take six
or seven days, following which
the ship will be towed to Genoa
where it will be scrapped. The
BBC reported that a search for
Russel Rebello, whose body was
not recovered from the wreckage,
will be carried out when it reaches
the dock.

continuing with its expansion
plans in Indonesia.
Through its Indonesian franchise
company, Red Planet, the company
recently opened its seventh hotel
in the country, located in Surabaya,
and has multiple new projects in the
pipeline.
"We are of the firm belief that
the value-for-money, or budget,
hotel sector in Indonesia has the
scope for the most growth with
rising domestic demand fuelling this
expansion," said Suwito, president
director of PT Red Planet Indonesia
Tbk. "Our in-depth research strongly
indicates this segment is also the
most resilient sector of the hotel
market in Indonesia and will remain
profitable through the normal ebbs
and flows of an emerging economy.
"Tune Hotels is without a
doubt the most iconic value-formoney brand in the region and
we look forward to building on the
international success the brand has
had," he added.
The 156-room Tune Hotel
Surabaya opened this week, taking
the company's total portfolio to
seven hotels with 1,063 rooms.
These include properties in Pasar
Baru (166 rooms), Pekanbaru
(140), Solo (153), Bekasi (157),
Palembang (147) and Makassar
(144).
But Red Planet said it is in "final
negotiations" for a minimum of four
more sites in the Jakarta region, with
formal announcements expected in

Danang Airport
Upscale hotels drive Asian
development
A
n air traffic controller at Danang
Airport has had his licence
was revoked after two aircraft were
involved in a near miss. The incident
occurred in late June, when a
Jetstar Pacific aircraft was cleared
to take-off from a runway where a
Vietnam Airlines flight was coming
into land. The two aircraft were just
350 metres apart when the mistake
was spotted. A trainee air traffic
controller had been left in charge
at the time. Her supervisor has
now been suspended by the Civil
Aviation Administration of Vietnam
(CAAV), while the trainee will be
required to undergo additional
training.

pipeline. The upper upscale
segment accounted for a further
23.2%, with 120,666 rooms, while
the luxury segment was found

iji Airways' planned services
to the Solomon Islands have
been suspended before they
even started. The airline said it
was informed by the Civil Aviation
Authority of the Solomon Islands
that it would not be allowed a
landing permit, less than 24 hours
before the start of its scheduled
Nadi-Honiara route on 5 July. The
airline apologised to passengers
and said it is hopeful that the
governments of Fiji and the
Solomon Islands can resolve
the issue.

operator has unveiled a new
pledge to raise awareness and
money for Thailand's elephants.

orwegian Cruise Line has
ordered an additional two new
cruise ships. The new Breakawayclass cruise liners will be built
at the Meyer Werft shipyard in
Germany, and are expected to be
delivered in the second quarter
of 2018 and the fourth quarter of
2019.
Each ship will have 4,200
passenger berths, with the deal
worth EUR1.6 billion (US$2.2bn).
“Norwegian Breakaway and
Norwegian Getaway have proven
themselves as industry gamechangers and are extremely
popular with our guests,” said
Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian’s
chief executive officer. “It was
only natural that we build on their
success with this new ship order
that further solidifies our long-term
growth strategy.”
Norwegian Breakaway was
the first Breakaway-class ship to
launch in May 2013 followed by
Norwegian Getaway in February

Hainan Airlines to add
Guangzhou flights
H
ainan Airlines has launched
a series of new flights from
Guangzhou's Baiyun International
Airport.
On Tuesday 15 July, the Chinese
carrier commenced a new daily
service from Guangzhou to
Shanghai's Hongqiao International
Airport. Flights will now depart
Guangzhou at 0730 and arrive at
Shanghai at 1000.
And on the same day, Hainan
Airlines inaugurated a new service
from Guangzhou to Chengdu,
the capital of southwest China's
Sichuan province. Flights will
now operate three times a week,
departing Guangzhou at 1250
on every Tuesday, Thursday and
Saturday, and arriving at Chengdu's
Shuangliu International Airport at
1510.

Vietnam selects
new HCMC
tourist boats
A
new fleet of new high-speed
tourist boats will be launched
between Ho Chi Minh City and
the resort destination of Vung Tau,
Vietnam's Tuoi Tre newspaper has
reported. The old hydrofoil boats
that previous served the route were
banned early this year following
a fire, and Greenlines DP, which
operates the service, has now
revealed that it will launch a new
fleet of five boats in August. The new
vessels will come in various sizes,
seating 60, 80 or 150 passengers.
And following the initial launch, an
extra boat will be added each month
until the fleet reaches 10 vessels.
The locally-built boats will cost more
than US$1 million.

The company has teamed up
with some of Thailand's most
famous TV stars, asking them to put their artistic skills to the
test by painting mini statues of elephants. These works of art
will then be auctioned off during the tournament. The funds
raised from the auction will go donated to local charity Elephant
Parade, to help its efforts to protect Thailand's elephants.
Thai celebrities taking part in the initiative include Woody
Milintachinda, Cindy Bishop, Tanya Engtrakul, Pip Rawich,
Mutmee Pimdao, Put Putthichai, View Wannarose, Poo
Anirut, Bee Matika, Paul Pattarapol, Data Daranratch, Jeab

Now in its 13th year, the King's Cup has so far raised
US$750,000 for Thailand's wild and domesticated elephant
population, including the creation of the first elephant hospital
in Krabi. A total of 50 street elephants will take part in this year's
tournament.
London's Savoy Hotel develops
wildflower walk
The Savoy Hotel in London
is developing a 'wildflower
walk', alongside the UK capital's
River Thames. As part of its
125th anniversary celebrations,
the Fairmont-managed hotel
is leading an initiative that will
create London’s first ever central
wildflower walk - a floral trail that will increase the amount of
native wildflowers in the city, as well as raising awareness of
green and floral spaces along the Thames. All along the river,
green spaces will be planted with wild flowers to create a
string of ‘pit-stops’ for bees and other pollinators.
The River of Flowers project will be unveiled in August
this year, and includes a map that plots the wild gardens,
meadows and groves of trees along the north and south
banks of the Thames.
Boeing preserves US wetlands
Boeing has launched a new
project that will lead to the
preservation of a huge area of
wetlands in South Carolina.
The US planemaker has
received approval for a plan
to preserve 1,600 hectares of
land, including more than 800
hectares of wetlands. Boeing said the project would lead
to "a substantial increase in public lands, public access, and
protections of land, water quality and several rare, threatened
and endangered wildlife species".
"This investment significantly advances a national effort
to protect and restore the fire dependent native longleaf
pine ecosystem," said Mark Robertson, executive director of
The Nature Conservancy in South Carolina. "Together, these
acquisitions represent one of the largest private conservation
investments in the Francis Marion National Forest and
surrounding region."
Boeing has purchased the land from South Carolina, and
will now lease plots to various bodies including Low Country
Open Land Trust (LOLT), the Open Space Institute (OSI) and
the Nature Conservancy.
Emirates adds Budapest to network

mirates has announced it
will fly between Dubai and
Budapest from October. The
carrier will launch daily services
to the Hungarian capital from 27
October 2014 using an Airbus
A330-200 aircraft. Budapest
Airport’s CEO Jost Lammers said
the route had taken five years of

Sri Lanka sees 25% jump in
tourist arrivals
‫ ٭‬Air Canada to fly to Panama City
Air Canada has announced that it will
start a new direct flight between Toronto
and Panama City on 17 December 2014.
The new service will operate three times
a week, departing Toronto’s Pearson
International Airport every Wednesday,
Friday and Sunday at 0830. The return
leg leaves Panama City’s Tocumen
International Airport at 1505 the same day. The service will be operated
using an Airbus A319 aircraft with 120 seats. Air Canada will become the
first airline to operate direct flights on the route.
S
ri Lanka's tourism industry
continued on its steep upward
trajectory in the first six months of
2014, with international arrivals
surging almost 25%.
According to the latest data
from the Sri Lankan Tourism
Development Authority (SLTDA), the
country welcomed a total of 727,353
overseas tourists between January
and June this year, marking a 24.6%
increase compared to the 583,573
recorded in the corresponding
period of 2013.
And this growth was driven by
visitors from China. The number
of Chinese tourists to Sri Lanka
jumped 137.2% year-on-year to
52,230. Other emerging markets
also experienced strong growth,
including Russia and Indonesia.
Since the end of the country's
civil war in 2009, Sri Lanka's tourism
industry has experienced strong
growth. Visitor arrivals exceeded
1.2 million in 2013 and the country
is now targeting 2.5m international
tourists by 2016.
MAS adds holiday flights
M
alaysia Airlines is adding more
capacity for the upcoming
Hari Raya Puasa. From 24 July to
4 August 2014, the airline will offer
11,896 extra seats to cope with an
expected surge in demand. The
main sectors seeing capacity growth
will include routes from Kuala
Lumpur to Kota Bharu, Penang, Alor
Setar, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and
Miri.
“We have increased capacity
on a number of demand sectors
to cater for travellers who wish to
enjoy the festive season with their
loved ones or even go for a short
holiday during this period,” said
MAS’ regional senior vice president,
Muzammil Mohamad. “Tickets
for this festive season are in high
demand. We urge those who wish to
travel during this festive season to
book as our seats are selling fast.”
MAS will also allow passengers
to carry more baggage during the
holiday season, with economy class
ticket-holders now able to check-in
two pieces of baggage weighing
up to 30kg. This allowance rises to
40kg for business class passengers.
Lux Resorts arrives in China
L
ux Resorts & Hotels has
unveiled its first hotel in
China. The Lux Tea Horse Road
is a 30-room luxury boutique hotel
in the UNESCO-listed
town of Lijiang, Yunnan province.
The first 10 rooms of the property
will open in September 2014,
with the remaining 20 rooms
following in mid-2015. This
second phase will also include the
launch of brand's Café Lux and
Lux Me spa.

A total of 400 new hotels are either under
construction or being planning in Central
and South America. According to the latest
regional pipeline from STR Global, 65,479
new rooms are expected to come on line
in the coming years, led by Brazil which
continues to lead the region's growth with
44,100 new rooms under development. But
development is widespread, with four other countries reporting more than
2,000 rooms under contract: Colombia (4,893 rooms), Panama (3,631),
Argentina (2,771) and Chile (2,437).

Package' to Peru
Taking advantage of the upcoming

Bear, tour company Inkaterra is offering
a new tour package to Paddington's
home country, Peru. The Andean
Spectacled Bear Package will allow fans

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has
launched a new Sheraton hotel near
the Brazilian city of Recife. The new
Sheraton Reserva do Paiva Hotel
& Convention Center is a new-build
hotel located in a planned beachfront
community approximately 30 minutes
from the centre of the city. The property
features 289 rooms, including 28 suites,
plus a spa, large fitness centre, restaurants, infinity-edged swimming pool
and a beach club. The property comes with an 850m² convention centre
able to accommodate up to 2,100 people.

Tripoli airport
closes after
attack
L
ibya’s Tripoli Airport has been
closed after a rocket attack
on Sunday. The airport will be
closed until Tuesday at the earliest

members of rebel forces from Zintan
and competing armed groups that
operate the hub.

Copa Airlines has seen a strong doubledigit rise in passenger traffic in the first
half of the year. For the six month period
between January and June 2014, Copa's
traffic, measured in revenue passenger
miles (RPM), surged 11.8% compared
with the same period in 2013. Load
factors increased 1.6 percentage points
to 77.7%. And much of the airline's
growth was driven by domestic routes, which saw a 13.5% rise in RPM.
Domestic demand however, slumped 33.8% in line with a reduction of
capacity on domestic routes in Colombia.
SWISS adds ancillary options

WISS has launched a new
range of ancillary offerings
through its SWISS Choice range.
Passengers flying with the airline can
now reserve a preferred seat online
for a fee, with prices depending on
the duration of the flight and whether
it’s a standard or extra legroom
seat. Later this month the airline will
also introduce a ‘Special Surprise’
service, which allows passengers
can surprise fellow travellers with a
bottle of champagne, wine or cake
with a personal message. Customers
can also now pre-order duty-free
items before boarding.
“We’ll continue to steadily expand
the range of our extra services here,
in close alignment to our customers’
wishes and needs,” said the airline’s
chief commercial officer, Markus
Binkert.

Cathay carries
more passengers
in 2014

athay Pacific has seen a steady
rise in its passenger traffic in the
first six months of the year. The Hong
Kong-based airline and its sister carrier
Dragonair boarded 15.44 million
passengers in the first six months of
the year, 6.5% more than the same
period last year. And this growth
outpaced the airline's expansion of
seat capacity, allowing Cathay to boost
its average cabin load factors by 2.3
percentage points to 83.6%.
The growth was driven by routes
to and from Northeast Asia (+11.7%)
and North America (+16.4%), while
traffic on mainland Chinese routes
increased 4.4%.
