With less than two months to Passover, we’ll soon be wishing many of you a fond farewell as you head to your summer homes. I’d like to take a moment to thank management and staff for delivering on our promise of providing an exceptional Membership experience this season. We hope you’ve enjoyed participating in the many events which were held in every venue, from the dining rooms to the special parties, Golf and Tennis tournaments, the Street Fair, the holiday weeks during Christmas and President’s Week, the Broadway Series, Lecture Series, Little Anthony & the Imperials, and more. Valentine’s Day was especially memorable this year with the 3 Singing Waiters entertaining us while we celebrated. We received rave compliments about the food as well. March has arrived, and we are excited about our first annual ‘Polo Gives Back’ Charity Week. By now you have seen the flyers, letters, emails, and information in the Buzz regarding all the activities which will occur at the Club from March 13 – 20. We hope you’ll participate — it’s never too late to sign up for the many events we have planned. The week starts with a pet parade and culminates with a BBQ on Saturday night. Proceeds will be donated to AVDA and Forgotten Soldiers Outreach. This will be our week to give back to the community, so please show your support for these worthwhile causes. You won’t want to miss our end-of-season party on April 15th where you’ll experience “Bollywood Around the Pool”. We’re still finalizing plans, so complete details aren’t available at this time, but please keep an eye out for forthcoming information about a night you’re sure to remember. Heading into May, we anticipate starting construction of the much-needed renovation of the lower valet. Not only will this enhance your Member experience as you drop off and pick up your vehicles, but there will be a dramatic improvement as you walk down the finished breezeway leading to our Family Resort Pool Complex. It will also improve safety and help with traffic flow getting cars in and out faster. The project is expected to be completed by early October. Our international staff will be leaving after Mother’s Day to head north to work for our sister clubs this summer. We had a great team this year — please be sure to thank them for their hard work and dedication during the season. With the implementation of the Humm tablet dining survey tool, management has received immediate feedback on the food quality and service standards you experience at our outlets. To date, we’ve received over 10,000 responses, of which 95% were positive regarding service, and 92% positive about the food quality, with an overall 98% Member satisfaction rating. Although not every comment was positive, we followed up on all of the constructive comments that we received in order to make improvements in our dining venues. On behalf of the management and staff, we wish you all the best during the next few months and look forward to seeing you around the Club! As a steady stream of attendees browsed for their right fit, representatives from 35 organizations showcased hundreds of volunteer opportunities, including work with animals, children in need, seniors and much more. Chair Debbie May stood beaming proudly at her Polo Club community as she greeted Member after Member coming through the door. “There is a lot more need now than last time we held this event in 2010,” said Roni Brockman and Nate Miller, Co-Chairs who have served together on this committee for more than a decade. As he circulated throughout the room helping pair volunteers with organizations, he added, “There are a lot of retired people here who have all types of life experience to share.” 4 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE Norm Schindler is one such member. New to Polo Club from Los Angeles, Norm came in looking for a chance to help veterans directly. “I do a lot of work with the VA (Veteran’s Association), and I wanted an opportunity to work face to face with vets.” Indeed, he found the perfect match. Veterans Helping Veterans will connect the former Army Pilot with a vet in need of help. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach also drew an ongoing crowd, as two servicewomen in uniform shared information about the organization, which sends letters and care packages to deployed soldiers. “Sometimes a package from FSO is the only connection to home the soldier will receive,” shared Sergeant Rivera. Other charities included several familiar children and family organizations, like the Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options (JAFCO) and the Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA). For lesser-known local organizations, Polo Club’s volunteer fair proved to be an invaluable opportunity to educate and connect with the community. “It’s one thing to get a volunteer, but it’s quite something for a community to make such an effort to share these opportunities with its Members,” observed Debbie Ellman, co-founder of Best Foot Forward Foundation (BFF). “Imagine if every neighborhood did this!” BFF is the only nonprofit organization in Palm Beach County dedicated specifically to the educational success of youth who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned and have entered the foster care system. Through educational resources, one-on-one support and advisement, the organization helps kids succeed in school, increasing graduation rates and decreasing homelessness common when kids “age-out” of the foster care system at 18 years old. While the fair connected volunteers to causes, it also played matchmaker between some participating organizations. Ellman’s BFF organization connected with Genesis Community Health, a non-profit organization that provides healthcare to anyone who needs it. The organization was created with special sensitivity to the needs of economically disadvantaged people of diverse cultural backgrounds in and around Palm Beach County. Now, thanks to the Polo Club’s Volunteer Fair, kids in the Best Foot Forward program may have access to healthcare through Genesis. part of you,” she shared. “We live a privileged life here in Polo Club, but it can’t be cards and cookies 24/7. We need to reach out and give of ourselves. If each person just did one thing, think of what we could do!” Roz looks forward to lending her expertise in art to relative organizations, while her other half, Joel, will do his part by helping seniors with rides and other tasks. For more information on how you can get involved, call Debbie May (561-995-8363) or Nate Miller (561-998-7692). As Nate put it best, “There’s something here for everyone and no reason you shouldn’t participate.” Save the Date The Community Relations Committee of The Polo Club extends an invitation to all residents who volunteer at sites in Broward or Palm Beach County. Come attend our 12TH ANNUAL Volunteer Recognition Luncheon MONDAY, MARCH 28TH, 2016 12:00 p.m. in The Crown Room. Sign up in the Administration Office. SEATING IS LIMITED. The spirit of the fair was captured by Member Roz August, who also attended the last fair five years ago. “Each time you come, it stimulates a POLOCLUB.NET 5 PO LO SELFIES Enjoying time with family at Polo? and Capture your memories from around the Club just share your selfies with Trends magazine. (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse) and The Forgotten Soldier Outreach. Proceeds of all participation will go to support the work of these two great organizations. AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), a Delray Beach-based charity that will celebrate its 30th year of helping the community in 2016, operates 24 hour/365 days a year. It offers a safe place to victims of domestic violence and their children. Residents are provided food, clothing, safety planning and assistance in achieving self–sufficiency. AVDA’s services include a 24-hour/365-day confidential hotline; a 63-bed emergency shelter, where victims and their children can stay for up to eight weeks; and Casa Vegso Transitional Housing, a 32-bed facility that provides a stay up to two years for victims and their children. AVDA also offers non-residential services to adult victims that assist with relocation 8 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE assistance, legal advocacy and group domestic violence education. Specific advocacy is offered to victims of stalking and domestic violence sexual assault. The funds that are raised during the “Polo Gives Back” Week will be matched up to $50,000 by the Vegso Family Foundation, which has pledged a matching campaign in celebration of AVDA’s 30th year of service. AVDA’s goal is to raise $366,000 to provide a solid base for its residents’ basic needs. Learn more about AVDA’s mission at http:// www.avdaonline.org. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach is a Lake Worthbased, grass roots non-profit organization, that supports our deployed service men and women and their families serving in the United States Military with care packages, letters of encouragement and returning Veterans assistance. They work to increase awareness of the need to support our service men and women. Left: Soldiers from Afganistan show their gratitude. Above and below: Care packges include everything from basic needs, like deodorant and toothpaste to the delights of home, like Girl Scout Cookies. In addition, they offer guidance to returning Palm Beach County veterans by offering guidance on medical care, housing, job referrals and assistance in navigating the veteran’s resources. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach reaches more than 900 soldiers each month. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach services include creating “We Care” packages for the U.S. Armed Forces, organizing letter-writing campaigns for deployed soldiers, coordinating quarterly sponsored packing events to send donated items to soldiers, and facilitating Bequests, where people can designate gifts to soldiers in their wills or as part of their estates. On March 20, 2016, the Forgotten Soldiers will hold its Outreach Poker Run, starting and ending at Moose Lodge 994 in Greenacres. The 2016 YellowTennisBall.com Award nominees consist of individuals and organizations who have shown a passion and dedication for supporting the growth of tennis and community outreach in South Florida, and have gone above and beyond in dedicating their time to the sport. As a winner of the YellowTennisAward.com award, The Polo Club’s General Manager Brett Morris was interviewed for the Tennis Channel, which is viewed in more than 32 million homes, and Jean will be featured in the February-March 2016 issue of Florida Tennis Magazine. Jean thanked all of the Polo Tennis staff, Tennis Advisory Committee, the Polo Members, Polo staff and the friends and family who voted daily over a 3 month period to nominate her for the Tribute Award. She also gave a special thanks to Roz August who organized the dinner and night of tennis at the Delray Beach Open. Truly, it was memorable and unforgettable. Jean was the first Women’s Tennis Coach at the University of Alabama in 1974 and served as the Executive Director of the Professional Tennis Left to Right: Brett Morris, The Polo Club General Manager, Jean Mills, Director of Tennis and Ivan Baron, Tournament Chairman Registry (PTR) (http://www.ptrtennis.org/) in 1979. She was crucial in the building of the International Tennis Resort of Delray Beach, 1980-85, and has been the Director of Tennis at The Polo Club of Boca Raton for the past 30 years. She has also served as the Florida Section President from 1988-2000 and was the first President of the Florida Foundation from 2005-2012. Jean was inducted into the Alabama and Florida Halls of Fame in 2002, in recognition of her contributions to tennis. POLOCLUB.NET 27 Polo Tennis Players of Israel Tennis Centers Welcomed to Polo For Fundraiser BY MICHELLE BROWN ITC Uses Tennis to Change Lives & Create Opportunity On February 21st, Polo Club’s tennis culture went global, as Members welcomed a very special set of Israeli players to their courts. Young players who are supported by the Israel Tennis Centers Foundation (ITC) traveled from their homeland to the United States, as ambassadors of the social service organization that helps them develop through sportsmanship, fitness and teamwork. The players held a special demonstration at Polo, so Members could learn about ITC, its work and how they can help. The demonstration was followed by a reception at the home of Dr. Sandy and Murray Ages, who organized the events with Dr. Raymond and Linda Schwartz. 28 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE WHY THE ITC? Murray Ages was introduced to ITC last year by Dr. Schwartz, who encouraged him to attend a similar event. He was moved by the work the ITC does in serving 20,000 children annually through 14 centers, strategically located in underprivileged neighborhoods throughout Israel. The ITC accepts children from pre-school to adulthood, regardless of background or religious faith. Once a part of the ITC program, each child is afforded a healthy, structured environment at one of the centers, where they are taught the values of cooperation, persistence and tolerance. More than 250 teachers, coaches and doctors work through the sport of tennis to reach children as young as three, including those with developmental disabilities and players who have the talent to excel on an international stage. Currently, ITC offers its players 172 all-weather courts, five indoor courts, five clay courts, eight fully equipped fitness rooms and 12 classrooms for studying and recreation. The organization has groomed ITC champions, including Amos Mansdorf and Harel Levy. WHY POLO? and it features opportunities for ‘special needs’ players,” he said. “I hope the attendance of Polo Members created an irresistible urge to help this program to enable these children to advance their social and psychological development.” “ITC’s centers are supported primarily by charitable donations with some subsidies and government support,” Ages said. “This traveling exhibition is necessary to sustain the program. ITC has a lot of support in the U.S. in the Northeastern triangle, and then they travel to Florida in the winter. They haven’t been to Polo since 2012. By reputation, Polo was one of the best places in the past for them to raise money.” Polo has a long history of engagement with ITC, starting with former Polo Members Sandra and Dr. Bill Lippy. The Ages and Schwartz families were proud to resume the relationship. “This program is intended to attract underprivileged and challenged children to bring them into a community tennis center, where a few things happen—it gets them off the streets; encourages them to continue with school; it feeds malnourished children; fosters dignity, self-respect, and motivation; it’s open to all faiths, orientations and needs—Jewish, Muslim, Christian—which engenders mutual respect between the various communities and cultures; Harel Levy, one of ITC’s many accomplished professional tennis players POLOCLUB.NET 29 Polo Tennis Chorus on the Courts Bernie Friedman Serves Up Color War Tunes BY MICHELLE BROWN When Polo Member Bernie Friedman choreographs a production—no matter how small— it is worthy of applause. He proved this when his Color War team performed a minimally rehearsed rendition of “Why Must I Be A Teenager in Love,” as the required cheer, as part of the friendly tennis competition. With enthusiasm and a few simple steps, Friedman’s team looked like it was ready for the stage, instead of the courts. Bernie Friedman leads his Color War team on the court. KEEP IT SIMPLE “One of the female team Members suggested, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we did this (step)?’ It was a simple movement, and it worked. When you do not have a lot of time and are working with people who are not used to dancing and singing, it’s best to keep it simple,” he said. “In the end, my team garnered the most points for the best cheer. There is a luncheon after the match, and I was very flattered that so many of the players from other teams congratulated me on the song.” His quick, on-point direction was a testament to his career in music and entertainment, which started when he was 14 years old. Under the stage name of Barry Roberts, Friedman has performed at venues all over the country and some out of the country. His resume includes corporate shows, shows in the Catskills Mountains and two shows at The White House. Now, he performs his cabaret show for audiences throughout southeast Florida and volunteers his time teaching autistic children how to play tennis. COLOR WAR NOT HIS HARDEST SHOW “When I got out of college, I worked as a vocal teacher, so I know how to whip a chorus into shape,” he said. “As captain of a Color War team, one of the responsibilities is to write a team song. I’ve had a knack for writing pretty good parodies quickly. I know the demographic, so I thought I’d find a melody that everyone is going to know. I had the lyrics ready since mid-summer.” “When I got out of college, I worked as a vocal teacher, so I know how to whip a chorus into shape.” Although he hadn’t taught since the 1970s, Friedman’s instinct for direction was sharp. He admitted that the Color War performance was not his toughest gig. No, that would have been last spring, when he was entered in the 10th Annual Florida Senior Idol competition (no connection to the TV show). “I made it through the Semi-Finals and to the Final Five, all while I was dealing with a health issue,” he recalled. “A few weeks after that competition, I was scheduled to have surgery.” The show must go on. Chris Burlini is a third generation artist and teacher who studied at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art in Italy. His work is described as “pop-surrealism,” an amalgamation of classical and pop-modern styles influenced by his paternal lineage of sculptors and the young artist’s early exposure to art fairs. The Chicago native spent the past two decades honing his craft and, lucky for us at Polo Club, sharing it with others. For eight years, Burlini has been teaching art to Members through classes held at Polo Club and in his Boca Raton studio. What began as a way to connect with the community has become a relationship that the artist himself describes as “invaluable.” “We don’t teach at any other communities, but Polo is special to us. We are like family,” says Chris. With a mission to awaken and inspire artistic passion in others, what inspires him is the dedication he sees from his Polo Club students. “No matter what they are facing, from physical to emotional struggles, they still find a way to get here,” he admires, sharing that he has students who started at age 90 and are still with him eight years later. Paintings by Chris Burlini POLOCLUB.NET 57 “We encourage them to paint how they see things through their feelings, not just paint what is in front of them. This helps build confidence that their feelings have merit.” – CHRIS BURLINI Many students who are Members exhibit at Polo Club’s semi-annual Art Show and several have sold paintings as well. Still, not everyone who comes to him has aspirations of commercial success as an artist. For some students painting is a great portable hobby — something to do virtually anywhere and a way to capture a moment or an emotion on canvas. At a glance, Burlini’s class may look like any art class, but there is more here than meets the eye. “We teach from a really different angle than most teach,” says Chris. “We teach how to get to know yourself through your paintings. If you are having a good conversation with your painting, we never judge on appearance or beauty. Instead, we encourage them to paint how they see things through their feelings, not just paint what is in front of them. This helps build confidence that their feelings have merit.” If it sounds therapeutic, there is reason. For some students, painting is a way to process something they have experienced. “The story behind the painting can make the work remarkable,” he adds. And we are really impressed by the work that is coming out of Polo Club.” 58 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE YEAR’S EVE NEW NEW MEMBERS & RENTERS DECEMBER 31ST COCKTAIL PARTY POLOCLUB.NET 59 Upcoming Cultural Events SHOAH Wednesday, March 23rd, 7:30 p.m. in The Laurels Registration required at Club Administration. › At this emotionally moving annual event, a holocaust survivor will relate life experiences on this evening of reflection. The Champions League is an incentive program aimed at enhancing the dining experience for Members in all restaurants on property. In the program, employee performance is tracked every day and employees are rewarded for exceptional performance through direct feedback from Members. The program begins with paper and electronic comment cards filled out by Members. To first qualify to win, the employee must have been named in 30 or more comment cards with a 95% or higher rating. A gift card reward is given to each top performer of the month, and each position in the dining room has its own prize, including servers, bussers, food runners and hostesses. According to Food & Beverage Director, Marius Ilie, things like exceptional service, knowledge, personality, and doing something for a Member that is above and beyond the employee’s job description are some of the most frequent commendations. “We believe that investing in employees shows we care, creates great morale, motivation, commitment, ownership and maintains the Service Excellence culture.” – MARIUS ILIE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR Since its inception, The Champions League has generated thousands of comment cards in both paper and electronic form through the HUMM system located in each dining room at the club. No matter your age or ancestry, the basics for skin care are the same. CLEAN IT UP Never go sleep without removing your makeup and cleaning your face. Give your skin the chance to recuperate just like your body does while you rest. Buy a package of disposable cleansing towelettes for those nights you are just too lazy to turn on the faucet. 72 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE I SCREEN, YOU SCREEN Always protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen has become as essential to skincare as moisturizer. Even on cloudy days or while riding in a car, your skin is exposed to damaging UV rays, which can cause brown spots, wrinkles, and the most common type of cancer today, skin cancer. Use SPF 30 daily under makeup and SPF 50 and above when you will be exposed to direct sunlight for more than a half hour. A SIMPLE HEALTHY SKIN ROUTINE EVERYDAY WEEKLY Mornings 1. Cleanse. Use a gentle cleanser to wash away oil and residue. 2. Tone. Soak a cotton pad with toner and wipe it gently over your entire face to balance the PH. 3. Protect. Apply facial sunscreen and facial moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores. Scrub up. Exfoliate skin twice a week with a gentle facial scrub or exfoliating puff. Be careful not to use scrubs made from ground up seeds or other ingredients that can scratch the skin’s surface. Evenings 1. Cleanse. Remove makeup and wash face with a gentle cleanser. 2. Tone. Soak a cotton pad with toner and wipe it gently over your entire face to remove any residue. 3. Moisturize. Apply moisturizer and eye cream to soothe, repair and help boost collagen. Mask it. Twice a week, use a mask suitable for your particular skin type. Many masks exist on the market, from oil-absorbing clay masks to hydrating masks that infuse skin with moisture and calm irritation. BY LESLEY MARLO Going to the gym without a plan is like going to the grocery store without a list. You could end up wandering around from one piece of equipment to the next wasting time and effort and ultimately not getting a very good workout. While an exercise plan is essential, it does not have to be overly complicated. Exercises should engage all muscle groups and include strength training as well as cardiovascular exercise to get the heart rate up and increase blood circulation. Including exercises that work the muscles in multiple ways, like push and pull movements, creates a well-rounded more functional workout routine,” says Polo Club Director of Spa & Fitness, Lisa Kyte. 74 SPRING 2016 | TRENDS MAGAZINE WORKOUT TIP Always make sure you are thoroughly warmed up before starting your workout and don’t forget to stretch! So how do you plan the ideal workout for your needs? Balance is key. Include movements that work each major area on your body, including: PUSHING Pushing exercises work the upper body, arms, shoulders, chest and back. Examples include, pushups and modified pushups, overhead press, and chest press. PULLING Pulling exercises also work the upper body but engage the muscles in a different, yet complementary, way than pushing exercises. Examples include, band pulls, TRX rows, pull-ups/chin-ups, bent over rows, lat pull downs. CORE Core exercise work, yep you guessed it, the core. For a flat tummy and strong back or that six pack you have always dreamed of, try the plank or modified plank, medicine ball slams, wood chops, band rotations and the scoop toss. HIP-DOMINANT Hip-dominant exercises work the upper legs, gluteous muscles, hip joint, and often, the knees. Examples include, hip bridges, squats, lunges, deadlifts and step-ups. BALANCE Balance exercises are excellent for allover strengthening, depending on the type of exercise you do, and usually involve moving from one position to another or using a piece of equipment that challenges your balance. Examples include, the staggered reach progressing to unstable surface reach (Airex pad), progressing to single leg standing & single leg deadlifts. WHOLE-BODY Whole-body movements use more muscles groups and burn more calories per exercise than movements concentrated on one muscle group. Examples include: bodyweight squats, lunges, push-ups and pull-ups. If you would like more information or have questions, please contact a Polo Club Fitness Professional at 561-995-1244.
