Susan Lynn “Susie” Eisele, 51 of Superior, AZ, passed
away on Nov. 30, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phoenix,
Arizona.
She was born in Globe, AZ and moved to Superior
soon thereafter. She attended the ARC special education
program throughout her childhood. She participated
in Special Olympics track and field, earning several
ribbons, and even more hugs. Once she completed her
education program, she traveled daily from Superior
to the Kearny/Ray ARC Workshop. There she was
employed and shared daily responsibilities with her coworkers and friends, completing various jobs as assigned,

She enjoyed listening to music, watching her favorite
movies which included King Kong and The Wizard of
Oz. In addition to music and movies, dining out was
something she happily looked forward to. Mexican food
was a must, and most recently, cheeseburgers and fries
were her treat of choice. Her pet cat Bo, was a friend for
life, and she enjoyed her niece’s and nephews’ dog, Mr.
Peanut.
For the past few years, Susie has enjoyed her Group
Home residence in Globe, AZ. She socialized daily,
contributed to household responsibilities, was well cared
for, and lived out her dream of ‘independent’ living;
something she aspired for from an early age.
She is survived by her father, Edward Eisele of
Superior and his significant other, Avis Hanks; a sister,

Superior Council approves zoning change on
proposed Circle K, hires interim chief of police
By Nina Crowder
Superior Sun
Changes are coming to Superior.
Last week, the Superior Town
Council held a special hearing on
the rezoning and approval of the
site plans for the proposed Circle
K property which will be located
at 1113 W. US Highway 60. The
property is currently zoned as
R3 multi-family residential. The
proposed change is to C-2 General
Commercial.
Neighborhood meetings have been
held regarding the rezoning of the
property and to discuss any issues
the community may have concerns
about the new store. Mike Spavaro
from MV Partners spoke to the
council and public on behalf of
Circle K about the proposed zoning
change.
“In preparing the site plan layout,
we have taken a lot of things into
consideration,” he said. “We tried to
orient the store and facility towards
US 60 for good visibility. Vendor
than the current store and will have
commercial grocery needs and
services as well as 10 gas pumps.”
Following the hearing, the council
approved the rezoning for the
proposed Circle K store. The council
agreed that the plan complies with
the requirements of the zoning

Resolution Copper aids in
trash removal in Superior
By Mila Besich Lira
Superior Sun
With the support of
Resolution Copper, the
Let’s Talk Trash Committee hosted a successful
clean up day for residents
of Superior. Town Council
Members, Michael Alonzo
and Stephen Estatico, also
aided in the planning of the
event and assisted with coordinating volunteers. The
Town of Superior provided
the back hoe and operator
to assist with putting the
trash into the containers.
The cleanup allowed residents to bring their trash
and yard waste to the roll
off containers on Saturday.
Those roll offs filled up
quickly, but with everyone’s help and support the
event helped to remove
80,000-90,000 pounds of
trash.

Miracle on Main St. held despite cold
By Mila Besich Lira
Superior Sun
The Superior Optimist Club and the Town
of Superior hosted the 10th annual Miracle
on Main St. Light Parade despite the cold
weather hitting Superior. The chilly weather
did not deter the community from attending
the event.
Mayor Jayme Valenzuela helped to keep
everyone warm by once again providing
free hot chocolate. Pete Casillas and Chris
Ketron were the heroes of the evening they
came out and set up and monitor several
fire pits which also helped to keep everyone
warm.
Leading the parade this year were members
of the Red Bear Outfitters. This year the
local group was recognized by the Superior
Optimist Club and the Town of Superior
as the Sprit of Optimist Community
Champions.
There were eight entries in the parade.
Winning prizes in the parade were first place
$100 to the Superior Chamber of Commerce;
Red Bear Outfitters are keeping warm, huddled around their – hey, wait a
minute – is that a FAKE fire? RBO were honored this year by the Town of
Superior and the Superior Optimist Club.

stay warm.
second place $75 to Superior Substance
Abuse Coalition; and $50 third place went
to the great-grandchildren of Elda Vasquez.
This year the parade took a little detour
into the Highlands neighborhood to allow
the Perez family to watch the parade from
their front porch. Their daughter is currently
fighting leukemia. (See related story.)
Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior braved
the cold afternoon weather and performed for
the crowd and Manny Guzman was the guest
DJ and Master of Ceremonies for the event.
“We would like to thank everyone for
coming out and braving the cold, and thank
all of the volunteers and sponsors who help
us to put this event on for our community,”
said JoAnn Besich, president of the Superior
Optimist Club.
In 2014 the Superior Optimist Club will
be celebrating 10 years as a service club in
Superior. If you are interested in becoming
a member of the Superior Optimist Club,
contact JoAnn Besich at 520-827-0592 or
Olga Lopez at 520-827-4119.
Mayor Jayme Valenzuela kept the Miracle on Main St. crowds warm and
toasty with his free hot chocolate. We even heard he provided mountains
of mini marshmallows. Yum! Thanks, Mr. Mayor!

December 11, 2013 Superior Sun, Superior, Arizona
Dear Santa, please send a cure! Love, Marisol
By Mila Besich Lira
Superior Sun
It is every parents worst
nightmare, that one day
something horrible happens to
your children. Whether they are
5 months, 5 years or 50 years
old, dealing with an illness of a
child is not easy. You wish you
could take it all away, the pain,
the fear, it is the way humans are
designed, to protect our children.
That is the case for the
immediate and extended
families of Marisol Perez. Just
days before Halloween she and
her parents, Rusty and Julie
Perez, found out that Marisol
had T-Cell Acute Lymphoblast
Leukemia. “We took her into
the clinic here in Superior
because she had unexplained
bruises and a rash that looked
like measles,” explained her
mother Julie. “She was a little
more tired than her normal
self and had a bloody nose the
weekend before but, we were
not expecting this diagnosis.”
Leukemia is not a disease that
is hereditary; a person can
get it from childhood through
age 60. This particular type of
Leukemia is very aggressive and
can quickly spread, according
to the American Cancer Society
website.
The clinic ran tests on Monday
and by Tuesday morning
Cobre Valley Clinic Physicians
Assistant Blaine Jensen had
referred the family to Phoenix
Children’s Hospital, immediately.
Marisol’s blood work showed
that she had a white blood cell
count of 269, a healthy person
usually has between 4 to 12, this
count required further testing
and monitoring at a hospital.
By that evening doctors at the
hospital had diagnosed her with
Marisol Perez gets an early Christmas visit from Santa Claus. (Mila Besich Lira photo)
Leukemia. “The Doctors told
us that if we had waited another
week, Marisol may not have
survived.”
Marisol has completed the
induction phase of her therapy
and has responded well to that
treatment. Over Thanksgiving
she was re-admitted into the
hospital due to a high fever,
but came home last week. She
is now in her second phase
of chemotherapy. This phase
combines both chemotherapy
and radiation. She will undergo
this phase of therapy for eight
to nine months. While she
continues to be a bubbly 5-yearold, this phase of treatment
has affected her motor skills.
“She still tries to run around the
house, she just can’t run as fast
as she was before and her hair
has fallen out,” explained her
mom. Marisol’s doctors have
prescribed what will be at least
a two and half year treatment
regime. Currently she receives
her treatment at the Phoenix
Children’s Hospital East Valley
Clinic twice a week. The family
has had to change their routine
to help keep Marisol safe from
other infections; even a ride
in the desert can affect her
progress.
Throughout our interview with
Marisol’s mom Julie, she use the
word “grateful” over and over.
Grateful for the staff at Cobre
Valley Clinic who took care of
things immediately, grateful for
their family and friends who
have been helping out in every
which way. Her parents George
and Norma Otero and Rusty’s
parents Brian and Kathy Long
have been very helpful to them.
Page 7
“My mom is helping to keep our
finances in order so we can focus
on Marisol and keep our bills
paid,” she explained. Grateful to
the community of Superior who
have hosted multiple benefits in
the past few weeks to help raise
money to cover their medical
bills. Just before the diagnosis
Rusty, Marisol’s dad was laid
off from his job constructing the
number 10 shaft at Resolution
Copper. The contractor who
he was working for paid their
COBRA health insurance for
November and December to
help out. Grateful for the staff
at John F. Kennedy School
especially Marisol’s pre-school
teacher Mrs. Zavala and her aid
Mrs. Toner who send Marisol
her school work so she can try
to stay on track with what her
classmates are learning.
The Superior Optimist Club
along with the Superior Sun
arranged for Santa to make a
special visit to Marisol and her
siblings, AJ, 10, Isabella, 8,
and Julissa, 6. The annual light
parade took a detour and drove
by their home so Marisol and her
family could enjoy the parade
together and receive treats
from Santa. Sheriff Paul Babeu
has invited the family to come
Christmas shopping with the
Sheriff this weekend.
Marisol and her family still
have a long road ahead in their
journey to recovery. There will
be struggles and joy along the
way, but one thing is for certain,
Marisol is surrounded by friends,
family and community that love
her and her parents and siblings.
Anyone wishing to help the
family can make a financial
contribution at the Bank of
the West, to the Marisol Perez
benefit account.

“We will be returning all of our players next year,” he
told the Superior Sun. “If these kids commit to putting in
the work during the off-season then next season (has) a
lot of potential.”
Here’s what Palmer said of each player who received
post-season honors:
Zavala: “Matthew is a great athlete and a natural leader
both on and off the field.”
Galindo: “Edgar led the team in tackles as a freshman
despite battling injuries throughout the season.
Hiracheta: “Marcus has a lot of speed and is an
explosive playmaker.”
Cruz: “(Nicolaus) has the potential to be one of the best
quarterbacks in recent history at Superior.”
Panther cagers continue to compete
By Andrew Luberda
Superior Sun
The Superior boys’ basketball team has 12 players on
the varsity roster with only two upperclassmen – junior
Ricky Longoria and senior Tyler George. Freshmen and
sophomores fill out the roster.
Despite being winless so far in the early season, the
Panthers’ basketball team is talented, if not experienced.
Longoria leads the team in scoring with 11 ppg. Freshman
Austin Navarrette is second on the team, scoring just over
9 ppg. Freshman Nicolaus Cruz is the team’s top rebounder
with 8 rpg. As a team, the Panthers average nine steals and
seven blocks per game.
The Panthers will play four games in eight days beginning
at San Manuel on December 10, 2013. Their next three
games will all be at home; Ray (Dec. 11), Combs (Dec.
12), and Hayden (Dec. 17). The game versus Combs is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m. All other games tipoff at 7:00 p.m.

Lady Panthers get
first win of season
By Andrew Luberda
Superior Sun
The Panthers’ girls’ basketball team won their first
game of the season on December 4, 2013 at Thunderbird
Academy, 38 – 8.
It was balanced scoring effort from Panthers to go along
with a determined defensive effort to earn the victory.
Nine Panthers’ players scored in the game. Senior Mariza
Padilla led all scorers with eight points in the game.
Freshman Elizabeth Ochoa hit the team’s only three-point
field goal in the game. Ariana San Miguel was three for
four from the free throw line. Junior Hunter Flanagan
finished with 10 rebounds to lead the Panthers.
The Panthers have four games remaining before the
holiday break beginning with a game at San Manuel on
December 10. They’ll battle Ray on December 11 before
games at Hayden (Dec. 17) and home versus Miami
(Dec. 20). All games start at 5:30 p.m.

FCCLA to host senior adult prom
By Mila Besich Lira
Superior Sun
The Family Career Community Leaders of
America students at Superior High School are
hosting their annual Senior Prom on Saturday,
Dec. 14, 2013.
This event is held each year to provide a
prom-like celebration for local senior citizens.
This type of event has become very common
throughout America as today’s generation of
students have learned that many from the World
War II generation were unable to attend their
high school proms. It is not uncommon to find
SHS students escorting their grandparents to
the event.
The SHS FCCLA prepares an evening of
food, dancing and Christmas cheer for Superior
Senior adults. This year the theme for the event
is “A Glamorous Christmas in Hollywood.”
The event is open to the public and there is
no cost to attend. The event will be held from
6-9 p.m. at the Superior Junior-Senior High
Multipurpose Room. The DECA group will be
taking pictures during the event.
For more information contact Terry Villaverde
at 689-3100.
