Students will learn how to cut, fuse and slump sheet glass to create their own functional works of art. In doing so, they learn about the basics of heat and time in relation to glass. Lighting, framing and composition will be discussed to achieve quality images with a wide variety of examples provided. Low light, nature, sports, and leisure photography will no longer be guesswork. TRADITIONAL FILM DARKROOM B&W PRINTING WITH RON STEINER One class per week for 2 weeks: Saturdays, 9 a.m.–Noon May 7–14 • June 4–11 • July 2–9 Ages 16 and up $55 per person (plus supplies) This class will cover the developing of black and white film, printing a contact sheet and making enlargements from the processed negatives. You can use any film camera, 35mm film and larger. If you have old B&W negatives and don’t want to take new photos, that is also fine as we can make B&W prints from these negatives. Upon completion, students will be able to use the lab for processing film and printing at nominal fees. PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS WITH RON STEINER This is a one-day class. The area is an “ahupuaa,” which is the wedgeshaped division of land consisting of a beach, fishing area, a stream that irrigates agricultural terraces, and forests extending inland to the ridgeline. This beautiful location is a peaceful and enjoyable place to kayak. You never know what you might catch. A wide variety of reef fish and a token shark or two will put you to the test. This is a great trip for experts and beginners alike. Trip includes gear, bait, guides and the boat. Bring a snack and some drinks to help complete your relaxing session on the water. KAYAK FISHING knowledge, and safety are topics we cover. Day 2, depending on skill level, we usually do the first dive in shallow water, 6–12 feet deep, then meet back at our boat to discuss the dive. The second dive is in water about 10–20 feet deep, depending on the group’s ability. Even if you are unable to spear any fish, you’ll have a blast just being out there! HIKING HIKE KULIOUOU RIDGE May 28 Sign up by May 25 Begins: 9 am | Ends: Noon Cost: $20 Come and sharpen your skills with the Hickam Harbor instructors and try your luck at capturing what the ocean has to offer. Enjoy three hours of open water, good company and a wide array of fish. Must have taken our “Learn to Spearfish” course to participate, as the skills needed for this activity can be moderate to difficult. June 2 Sign up by May 30 Begins: 8 am | Ends: 3 pm Cost: $15 Kuliouou Ridge is a five-mile intermediate hike. The hike will start off very dry with many switchbacks going uphill. Along the way the trail will begin to open up through a grove of Cook pines. Towards the end be prepared for a cooler and wetter environment on the steep incline to the summit. Once at the top we will be rewarded with a spectacular view of southeastern Oahu from Waimanalo to Waikiki and Koko Head Crater. This is a great hike to get an amazing perspective of Oahu. Bring plenty of water and snacks. SNORKELING DAY HIKE MAUNAWILI FALLS SPEARFISHING EXCURSION SNORKELING AT SHARKS COVE May 26 Sign up by May 23 Begins: 9 am | Ends: 3 pm Cost: $20 During the spring months when the North Shore surf is down, the reefs are thriving with sea life. Come hang out with the Outdoor Adventure staff as we explore the tide pools, swim with the turtles, and possibly wrestle an octopus or two. While en route we will point out some of the sights and let you browse through our own sea life binder so you’ll know what you’re looking at when you get there. Start at Waimea Bay and travel just beyond Sunset Beach. This trip is about seven miles round-trip on level terrain and is an easy ride for beginners. Ted’s Bakery is at the halfway point, so if you don’t want to bring your lunch, you can pick up some goodies there. A towel and bathing suit will come in handy if you need a refreshing plunge in the ocean. Trip includes gear, transportation and happy, courageous guides. If you love to fish and want a little exercise to go with it, this is the trip for you. Do you think you have what it takes? The Outdoor Recreation staff takes trips to different locations around the island, so come aboard and we’ll give you the basics of kayak fishing, while you enjoy the beautiful coastal sights and bring home the fish! We’ll provide the kayak, fishing gear, bait, and transportation. May 21 Sign up by May 19 Begins: 8 am | Ends: 3 pm Cost: $30 includes bicycle, $25 without This trip is like no other mountain biking trip in Hawaii. On the Ka‘ena Point trail you will see many native birds and plants, and if you are lucky, can also see the island of Kauai (on a crystal-clear day). It may be a good idea to pack a camera to take pictures. You will also want to pack some food like energy bars, fruits like bananas and ice water. This trip is not for everyone. Skill level must be at least intermediate, as this trail does pose some difficult terrain. LEARN TO SPEARFISH WEST SIDE BIKE RIDE/SWIM May 21/22 Register online by May 18 June 11/12 Register online by June 8 Begins: 9 am | Ends: Noon Cost: $60 Spearfishing is as exciting and challenging as it sounds! Day 1, class is held at Hickam Pool and lasts about three hours. We’ll go over rules and regulations set by the state, where you can and cannot go, and what you can and cannot eat. Physiology, techniques, training, equipment, out the tide pools and cool off in the water. Bring plenty of snacks, water and sunblock. May 28 Sign up by May 25 Begins: 8 am | Ends: 1 pm Cost: $25 includes bicycle, $20 without Starting at Makua Cave, we will ride along the west side coastline passing through Makua Beach to the famous Yokohama Bay, where we will start our off-road ride at Ka‘ena Point. Testing your mountain biking skills, traverse a dirt road to get to the very rewarding end at Ka‘ena Point. On our return, we will stop at Yokohama Beach and check June 4 Sign up by June 2 Begins: 10 am | Ends: 3 pm Cost: $15 Lace up the mud shoes and head into the jungle valley on a mini-adventure to a waterfall with a swimming pool. So close it feels like it’s in our back yard! This trip is sure to satisfy the adventurous! Bring a camera and snap a shot of views from the ridge as well as views inside the jungle canopy. You may already know that IRONS table + tavern at the Navy-Marine Golf Course is home to creative cuisine in a casual upscale setting. What you may not know is that it can be a great place to celebrate a special occasion or hold a particular event. “IRONS has so much to offer for your party or special event,” says General Manager Mike Wells. “You cannot beat the central location with plenty of free parking. The views overlooking the golf course are amazing.” Between the main dining room and the outside lanai, IRONS can accommodate parties of over 100 people.
