Volume 21, Issue 2 April 2011 Midlothian Campus’ PN Program: Striving for Excellence by Eunice Centura College Midlothian campus is excited about our outstanding NCLEX-PN pass rates. [The NCLEX-PN is an examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States. Passing of this exam is required to work in the Practical Nursing field.] In striving for excellence, we have successfully implemented an in-house NCLEX-PN preparation course which replaced the external NCLEX-PN review in the Practical Nursing Capstone. The four-day NCLEX-PN course is conducted by the Practical Nursing Recognition Page 2 Events Page 3 Class Chat Pages 4 Community Page 5 Placements Pages 6, 7, 8 Scott and Tequila Herron-Smith, CRIM Coordinator. The course enhances the students’ educational experience in preparation for the NCLEX-PN examination. Through dedication and hard work, the Practical Nursing program has successfully accomplished a 100% pass rate from June 2009 – June 2010. Currently, the overall pass rate for the Midlothian campus is 91.30%. Our Practical Nursing program maintains full approval from the Virginia State Board of Nursing until the next on-site review scheduled for May 2016. Our Practical Nursing program mission is to “continue to help adult students gain the skills and attitude necessary for a meaningful entrylevel nursing position in serving the needs of our community.” CRIM’s 2009 Practical CRIM’ P i lN Nursing i G Graduates d A Dream Takes Time and Dedication CONGRATULATIONS are in order for John “Jae” Thomas, a recent Tidewater Tech (TTT) graduate from the automotive program! John’s time in the Automotive program at TTT was exemplary resulting in being accepted into the Universal Technical Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina – the first step toward the world oof NASCAR. But JJohn, like many oother young men, m made some life ddecisions that put hhim off track. JJohn, fr from “Jae” ae” Thomas showing off S South his Tidewater Tech diploma came home originally Columbia, Carolina, from a full of by Jane Davis, TTT encouragement and where educational opportunity abound. He first attended the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts School in Orlando, Florida with little success. Then on to the University of South Carolina (USC), where he pursued a degree in Business Marketing. After unsuccessfully completing USC, he moved on to Midlands Technical Institute at which time he sustained a work injury that required extensive rehabilitation. So – at the age of 27, John eventually landed at Old Dominion University in hopes of being accepted to the newly established football team but to no avail. Because of all of these failures, John fell into a deep depression. Eventually, he decided that Tidewater Tech would get him to where he wanted to go. He knew he was headed to NASCAR! Continued on page 2 Recognition A Dream... Continued from page 1 Even though John left USC, he was there long enough to prepare a research paper on the marketing affects impacting the depth and breadth of the NASCAR image. He was surprised to learn that there were few minority drivers or members of pit crews. NASCAR was still a “Red Neck” sport, according to his research. But that did not keep John from applying to the Institute in 2007. Even though he was turned down because of his lack of education and experience, he now had two goals – role modeling to other minority young men that with tenacity “you can make it” and the other goal remained the same - NASCAR. The decision to come to Tidewater Tech Trades was very significant to his acceptance to the Universal Technical Institute. His instructors saw his abilities and were relentless in their support of his personal goal. “My instructors motivated me when I couldn’t motivate myself.” His father being a master mechanic had a significant impact on his success as well. John “Jae” Thomas makes the next step toward his goal because on March 28, 2011 he starts his 65 week training program. Then he is already planning the next step - a Bachelors Degree in Automotive Engineering. John is very clear on where he has been and where he is going and stated, “it only takes a dream, clear thought and preparation along with God’s help you will reach your destination.” NASCAR – here I come! An Excellent Catch by Calvin Eckrote, CNOR at a nursing care center she discovered another potentially lethal error. A resident had been ordered a Potassium supplement every other day (Potassium is an electrolyte with an essential function in keeping the heart beating regularly). Ms. West, who was starting her first medication pass of this clinical rotation, found that this resident had been receiving their “every other day” medication daily for at least 11 days. After checking vital signs and assuring the resident was in no distress, the unit Coordinator was notified, and an investigation was started. A November 25th, 2010 article in the New England Journal of Medicine describes a study of 10 randomly selected North Carolina hospitals, between January 2002 and December 2007. North Carolina was chosen because of “the state has shown a strong commitment to patient safety.” These researchers looked at 2,300 patient records and found 588 “errors” that led to complications. While some of these errors were hospital acquired infections, and some surgical errors, many were medication dosage mistakes; 50 were life threatening and 14 people died. It was also reported that the United States estimated 180,000 patient Ms. West has just completed her licensing deaths because of errors and Medicare was review course and received a grade that losing $4.4 billion annually. predicts her ability to successfully pass boards the first time she attempts them at Therefore, I was extremely proud, when the 99%. I expect Ms. West will be as excellent a charge nurse of a general hospital medical- nurse as she was a credit to Centura Norfolk’s surgical unit where we were doing a clinical Practical Nursing program. Good luck and rotation, reported that my student, Ms. Godspeed in all your future endeavors. Jessica West, a fourth semester Practical Nursing student, made an “excellent catch” of a medication error. A newly admitted patient was on a doubled Nitroglycerine dose. The patient was given in the ER, where it should have been discontinued on his transfer, because it was ordered again once he arrived on the floor. It was Ms. West’s diligence and attention to detail that prevented patient injury and perhaps death. Norfolk’s N f lk’ Practical P ti l Nursing graduate, My appreciation of Ms. West increased Jessica West exponentially, when less than a month later, Kudos to Recent CNM Students by Dave Cagni, CVAB CompTIA is following the overall trend in the certification industry to make certification a continual process. Guest Speaker, Ms. Deborah Dandridge, Co-Founder & Executive Director of Dress for Success Hampton Roads (DFS), delivered an inspirational and down to earth talk about women achieving an elevated level of confidence and professionalism on their road to success. The students were surprised and thrilled to find out about the new partnership between Centura Norfolk and Dress for Success which will enable each of them to receive an entire business suit at no cost. They will also have the opportunity to join a Professional Women’s Group once they have begun their new career for ongoing support from their peers. Ms. Dandridge explained “The Mission of DFS is to promote the economic independence of women by providing professional attire, a network of support and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” Guest Speaker, Speaker Ms. Deborah Dandridge “I have often talked to students on the importance of dressing pprofessionally for an intervview, but I also understand that tthings are tight while you are earning an education.” said M Ms. Spinner, Career Services Coordinator “ Now, thanks to Ms. Dandridge and Dress for M Success of Hampton Roads, our students won’t have the financial strain of buying an interview suit. Holiday Cheer at Centura Institute CORL students found themselves full of holiday cheer in December. The students started off by giving back and participating with Christmas carolling December 15th, at one of the nursing clinical sites, ‘Grandma’s House’. The students and staff lifted the spirits of each person in the home with classic Christmas songs. The students donated food to Student Government to be raffled off on December 22nd, to the student who had came on time to class for the two weeks prior. The students receiving the basket were overwhelmed when they realized a gift certificate was included for them to purchase a holiday ham or turkey. 3 by Tonya Payne, CORL One of the student winners, winners Lysandra Ortiz Class Chat Successful Centura Student Speaks Out Professional CoderA Certified by Kathleen Dooley, CCHE As a former Centura student and recent graduate in the Centura College, Chesapeake campus’ Business program, Sandra Davidson, took front and center in the classroom and you could hear a pin drop. by M. Cathe Crotts, CNOR Centura College Norfolk campus takes pride in successfully preparing their Medical Billing and Coding (MBC) students for the CPC-A exam. The CPC-A credential (apprentice level) is for those students who have no field experience. Once, the two years experience is obtained, the specialist may submit two letters of recommendation to the AAPC (credentialing for the business side of medicine) to have their apprentice status removed. Passing the National Certified Coding Specialist exams will enhance job prospects as employers highly regard qualified and credentialed coders. Students from various classes had assembled in room 101 to hear guest speaker, Davidson tell of her various endeavors since her graduation from Centura College in August of 2009. Ms. Davidson was now well on her way to a Bachelor’s degree in Business at Strayer University and we welcomed her into the classroom to present an informative talk to the class. Ms. Davidson covered three main areas in her presentation. First, she discussed what was now expected of her at the University level. She explained to the students that they should be prepared to take a wide variety of classes in order to prepare them for a wellrounded education and thus enhancing their marketability in the workplace upon graduation. Secondly, she talked about the “turn it in.com” system by which each student’s essay or research paper was automatically checked for plagiarism before it is read by the instructor. She emphasized that each and every paper, whether it be a history, math, philosophy or English, had to be turned into this system. Thirdly, she emphasized that the student who was planning to continue his/her education after graduating from Centura needs to expect to do a considerable amount of reading as well as research writing in order to obtain their advanced degree. Ms. Davidson fielded a wide number of questions from several of the students, answering them from an informed perspective. Finally, she thanked her audience of very attentive students for allowing her to provide them with very worthwhile information. We enthusiastically applauded her. Ms. Davidson, in her warm, personable and knowledgeable way, will go far in her future career endeavors. She will be welcomed back any time that she wishes to speak to our Centura College students. Centura Institute PN Grad Returns to Inspire Others by Christi Scott, CORL Practical Nursing student Lance Marr graduated with his PN diploma from Centura Institute on October 8, 2010. During his pinning ceremony, Lance recited the Florence Nightingale Pledge and promised to, “be active in assisting others in safeguarding and promoting the health and happiness of mankind.” Lance may have finished his academic career at the school but periodically he returns to share in the spirit of mentorship. He does this by visiting the campus to provide free tutoring and help with study skills to students seeking his help. I have spent the last six and half months attending the Welding program. The atmosphere of the campus is more like a family home. The dedicated staff in the front office strived to help students in every area within the programs to achieve success. Mrs. Wilson, Ms. Davis, and Ms. Pearson, assisted me in completing the maze of financial aid paperwork to resume writing to job placement. I have also seen many men and women from different ethnic backgrounds coming through the doors of Tidewater Tech. This illustrates the school’s diversity as well as commitment to ensure all students meet the challenges of 4 by Terry Pass Jr., TTT today’s global market to fairly compete and success in their various fields of study. When I first entered Tidewater Tech, I was not certain if I was making the right move. I knew I had some basic skills in welding but my teachers, Mr. Blount, Mr. Pearce, Mr. Franklin, Mr. Clark and others, gave me the necessary information, instructions, guidance, and tools to become a master tradesman. They fostered a partnership between student and instructor and showed their passion and knowledge in the field of welding. If you want to successfully learn a trade then you should seriously come to Tidewater Tech Trades. The school will brighten your future and open many doors to a rewarding career. Terry Pass Jr. Community Chesapeake Massage Therapy Students Hone Their Skills The Chesapeake campus is quickly becoming the place to call for off-site chair massage events. From Portsmouth to Virginia Beach students from Chesapeake are working tirelessly to bring much needed pain and stress relief to hundreds of people. Whether it is at the Golden Gloves boxing tournament at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront or at the Ida Barbour Early Learning Center in Portsmouth, Virginia our students bring their massage therapy skills to people who may have never had a massage before. Plus the students continue to develop their skills and build their confidence for working on the public which can only help them as they prepare to enter their new profession. The community appreciates the students’ work. We have received the following comments; “Your students were by Fred Pitz, CCHE excellent!” and “Thanks for helping me to by Eunice Scott, CRIM make a much needed community program a success.” We here at the Chesapeake campus Centura College Midlothian Medical Assistapplaud our students hard work and look ing and Practical Nursing students collaboforward to more events. rated in joining Southside Baptist Christian School students, school faculty and staff, and parents in a one mile walk on January 20, 2011. Chesapeake’s MT students Richmond-West Pediatric Nursing Students Kill Germs Two Practical Nursing students of Centura College –West Campus in Richmond took patient teaching to the masses. Lasaundra Logan and Christina Webb spent part of their Pediatric Nursing rotation at Tuckahoe Montessori School. Part of the requirements during this rotation is to observe developmental differences of children and learn how to interact with them. Ms. Kymberlie Lucier, their instructor, wanted to introduce them to patient teaching. Using preschool children would allow them to be more creative and in a less threatening environment to start with. Midlothian “Step2-It” in Community Volunteer Service by Kim Davis, CRIW we wash our hands, and what’s the best way to wash our hands. After this interaction, the students demonstrated with the use of oil and cinnamon rubbed on their hands, what germs would look like if they could see them. The children liked that part. They demonstrated with their ‘germy’ hands how cold water alone doesn’t get rid of germs. Then they tried just warm water, the kids saw how only a few germs came off their hands. They discussed and demonstrated how soap, rubbing, and warm water will get rid of almost all the germs. Sure enough, you couldn’t see any cinnamon ‘germs’ on their hands. The children were impressed. The students decided since it was flu season and there Practical Nursing were a lot of other viruses The nursing students also students, Lasaundra going around the schools provided age appropriate Logan and Christina Webb this winter, hand washing coloring sheets on germs. would be a great topic.
