WARWICK SALUTES
A guide to veterans’ monuments, memorials,
military structures and sites.
Compiled by Councilwoman

(USAR/RET)
Military
and
paramilitary
organizations
pay respect or honor by performing a “salute.”
This is an established formal act including:
raising the right hand to the side of head gear,
presenting arms, dipping colors, cannon or gun
fire, ringing bells, fly over, sounding taps, etc.
The following pages represent how the great
City of Warwick, RI has rendered salutes to
military veterans and sites within its borders.
Dedicated July 4, 1919
In grateful remembrance of the young men
of this town who entered the military and
naval service of the United States of
America in the World War and offered their
lives to defend the sacred institutions of
their country, abolish the rule of tyrants and
to secure to all peoples the blessings of
liberty. This statue of enduring bronze was
erected by the town of Warwick.
Committee of statue: General Charles A.
Wilson, William B. Sykes, J. Warren Lander
Sculptor John Hardy
KENTISH ARTILLERY ARMORY
Formed as the Kentish Light Infantry in
1797 at the recommendation of
General George Washington, the
group later became known as the
Kentish Artillery Company & Armory.
Warwick gave the Kentish Artillery
permission to build its armory on the
eastern portion of the town lot in 1854.
Over a century later the building was
given to the city.
Two Revolutionary War cannons were
given to the Kentish Artillery in 1804,
and the building featured two cannon
niches on both sides of the front door
when constructed. The cannons now
located in the niches are replicas
because the originals disappeared in
1972 and have never been recovered.

American Gold Star Mothers Way
The American Gold Star Mothers Inc. was
formed in the United States shortly
after World War I to provide support for
mothers who lost sons or daughters in the
war. The name came from the custom of
families of servicemen hanging a banner
called a Service Flag in the window of their
homes. The Service Flag had a star for each
family member in the United States Armed
Forces. Living servicemen are represented
by a blue star, those who lost their lives are
represented by a gold star and service
members wounded in action are
represented by a silver star. The last Sunday
in September, is observed nationwide as
Gold Star Mother's Day. In the State of RI, the
Sunday following Mother’s Day is Blue Star
Families Day.
