2016 Waste and Recycling Calendar
Message from the Mayor
On behalf of Council and staff, I am pleased to present the
2016 Waste and Recycling Calendar. Thank you for making
environmentally conscious choices to help keep our waste
diversion rates high and our Town green.
TONY VAN BYNEN
I would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to
keep plastic bags out of the blue bin and use compostable
bags in the green bin. To dispose of plastic bags, please
participate in York Region’s Plastic Bag Take Back Program.
This initiative is run in partnership with local retailers and
the Canadian Plastics Industry Association. Residents who wish
to participate are asked to turn their plastic bags inside out,
place them in a bag and bring it to a participating local
retailer. For more information and for a list of retailers,
please visit www.newmarket.ca
To better serve our community, residents can now visit the
Customer Service kiosks at the Magna Centre (800 Mulock
Drive) or the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex (100 Eagle
Street West) for waste and recycling inquiries and bin
purchases seven days a week. Additionally, you may visit us
at the Municipal Offices (395 Mulock Drive) from Monday to
Friday during regular business hours or call 905-895-5193.
Newmarket 2016.indd 2
Don’t forget to download Newmarket’s free ‘my-waste’™
app for your mobile phone or tablet from your Android or
Apple App Store. The ‘my-waste’™ app provides garbage,
recycling and special waste collection details, as well as the
‘report a problem’ feature for non-emergency municipal
issues such as reporting graffiti, missed collections,
potholes and more. You can also access the new website
version of the ‘my-waste’™ app at www.newmarket.ca/
wasteandrecycling.
Again this year, we are pleased to offer a pull-out calendar
so you can view all important collection dates, events and
reminders for the year ahead at a glance. If you have any
questions about the Town’s waste and recycling initiatives,
please contact our Customer Service department at
905-895-5193 or email [email protected]
Tony Van Bynen, Mayor
2015-11-19 10:11 AM

Newmarket 2016.indd 3
All materials for recycling collection must be placed in a
Town of Newmarket provided blue bin. Do not use nets
or lids to cover your container. Blue bins must not be on
wheels. On windy days, remember to put heavy items
on top to avoid your materials blowing away. Please DO
NOT use blue bins for yard waste.

one-time dry cell batteries can be recycled at select
Newmarket hardware stores. Please check with your
local hardware store for details.

EMERALD ASH BORER IN NEWMARKET:
KNOW THE SIGNS TO SLOW THE SPREAD
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive species that attacks and kills ash trees, has been identified in
Newmarket. While EAB poses no health risks to humans or pets, ash trees of all species and sizes
(with the exception of Mountain Ash) are susceptible to the attack.
Here are some frequently asked questions to help residents identify and monitor EAB and
treat trees that may be infested on private property.
EAB BEETLE
S-SHAPED NOTCHES
D-SHAPED EXIT HOLES
WHAT DOES EAB LOOK LIKE?
EAB beetles are metallic green in colour, have narrow bodies and are approximately the size of a penny.
WHAT ARE SIGNS OF INFECTION?
Early signs include holes in leaves, D-shaped exit holes and S-shaped notches under the bark. Mild
defoliation is also an indication of early infestation in ash trees.
HOW DOES EAB SPREAD?
EAB spreads through the movement of infected ash wood, such as firewood, logs, mulch and lumber.
To help slow and prevent the spread of EAB, residents should refrain from moving any type of wood.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF AN ASH TREE IS INFECTED ON MY PRIVATE PROPERTY?
Private property owners are responsible for the tree on their property, therefore residents are
encouraged to consult with a professional arborist if they suspect a tree has EAB. Arborists should be
certified with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or registered with the American Society of
Consulting Arborists (ASCA). Arborists can be found in the Yellow Pages and other business directories.
For more information about EAB, visit the Town’s website at www.newmarket.ca/eab or call 905-895-5193

Grasscycling your grass clippings – Grasscycling is when grass clippings are left on the lawn
so that nature can return the nutrients stored in the clippings back to the soil as they decompose.
As clippings break down, they release moisture and nutrients into the soil. You can save as much
as a third of your lawn mowing time by removing your grass catcher and letting grass stay on the
lawn. Try it this summer!

Do you ever…
• Put more food on your plate than
you can eat?
• Buy food on impulse and not eat it?
• Find wilted lettuce in the back of your
fridge?
Did you know?
About 40 per cent of the food produced
in Canada is thrown away. More than half
of this waste comes from our homes.
Good Food offers simple tips to help you
plan and prepare meals, save time and
money. It also helps you eat healthy and
waste less. Some tips include:
• Plan your meals and use a shopping list
• Freeze foods and leftovers if you’re not
going to eat them in time
• Understand best before dates reflect
freshness, quality and taste, not food
safety

Safe Disposal of
Fat, Oil and Grease
How you dispose of fat, oil and grease can have a serious
impact on your home and the environment. When poured
down the sink, drain or toilet, they can clog sewer pipes.
Fats, oils and grease are byproducts of cooking. Including:
• Butter and margarine
• Shortening and lard
• Salad dressings
• Cooking oils (including
deep frying oils)
• Sauces and gravies
SAFE DISPOSAL
• Fat, oils and grease are organic waste that should
be placed in your green bin
• Before washing cooking equipment and dirty dishes,
wait for fats, oils and grease to harden, then wipe with
a paper towel or scrape it into the green bin
• If fats, oils and grease are in liquid form, leave it to cool
then empty into the green bin
• Liquid cooking oil that won’t solidify can be dropped off
at one of York Region’s waste depots for recycling into
biodiesel

Binny’s Winter Waste & Recycling Tips
To help make waste and recycling pick up as easy and efficient as possible this winter,
residents are reminded of the following waste and recycling Do's and Don't's:
• Do place items at the end
of the driveway/curb so
they are visible to the
operator collecting them.
• Do not leave items
up the driveway for
operators to collect.
• Do bundle items in your
blue bin and place heavier
items on top to prevent
them from blowing away
and littering the street.
• Do not place bins and
garbage bags on top of
or behind snow banks.
• Do use the proper
containers for garbage,
recycling, green bin
items and yard waste.
• Do not overload green
bins, put unacceptable
materials in blue bins or
have more than three
garbage bags out unless
additional bags are tagged.
Binny also reminds residents to have your waste and recycling items at the curb by 7 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.

Metal and
Large Item Pick up
Large metal items such as appliances, barbecues (no propane tanks), bed frames,
furnaces, hot water heaters and bicycles must be recycled. Purchase a large item
tag for $12 at one of the locations listed on page 1 and call 1.866.421.5625 to arrange
for a special curbside collection. For safety, remove doors from fridges, freezers and
ovens. If a special collection is not booked, metal items will not be
collected. Metal appliances and scrap metal can also be dropped off at
select York Region depots (see page 3 for details).
Furniture, mattresses, box springs, and other large items are to be placed
at the curb for pick up on your regular garbage collection day with a large item tag
which can be purchased for $12 at one of the locations listed on page 1. Please note
electronics will not be collected at the curb (see page 3 for depot locations).
Carpet and linoleum will be picked up on your regular garbage collection day
provided it is cut up and securely tied in bundles weighing less than 20 kg (44 lbs)
and no longer than 1.2m (4 ft). Each bundle counts towards the item limit at the curb.
Extra bag tags can be purchased 5 for $12 at one of the locations listed on page 1.
