Bill Bennett
For more than 20 years Bill Bennett was the familiar and comforting voice of the
Peterborough Petes. He treated the Petes not just like they were a professional hockey
team, rather than a junior outfit, but like they were the only team in the world. His
passion for the team, and his job, was evident every time he fired up his equipment and
brought the action into the cars, work places and living rooms of Peterborough residents.
Bill had the good fortune of calling one NHL game, the St. Louis Blues at the Toronto
Maple leafs, but his heart was really in junior hockey. As the players from the Ontario
Hockey League championship team from 1988-89 gather in Peterborough to celebrate
their 20th anniversary, I hope they never forget the man who passionately broadcast their
hockey exploits with the same professionalism they displayed on the ice.
