Winter Escapes
Winter deals and wonders across
extraordinary Western Australia
As winter approaches our state comes alive with magical holiday hotspots. Carpets of green
blanket the countryside, wildflowers begin to bud and creeks and waterholes burst into life.
THERE’S some great value holiday specials
in winter throughout Perth and surrounds,
Australia’s Coral Coast, Australia’s Golden
Outback and Australia’s North West. So
why not take a winter break now and plan
your escape?
You could head to the city, and spend
your days shopping for winter fashions,
visiting the attractions and then indulge in
a night or two on the town.
Otherwise consider a trip to the Perth
countryside and explore the national parks
and quaint townships where log fires roar
inside historic pubs.
Try a trip to Perth’s coast. From Mandurah
to Lancelin, you can stay in a beachside
hotel and soak up the romance of the
stormy beaches.
For an outback adventure try Australia’s
Golden Outback. Pack up the car and
discover outback townships and the
Gormley Statues in the Goldfields, share a
beer with the locals at a Wheatbelt pub or
stroll through fields of wildflowers in the
Gascoyne-Murchison.
Make the most of your Golden Outback
adventure by staying at station stay
accommodation on a vast sheep and cattle
station. Or head south to the Esperance
coast with its range of magnificent National
Parks.
Perhaps you’d like to extend your
summer? Starting just two hour’s drive
north of Perth at the seaside town of
Cervantes, Australia’s Coral Coast offers
year round sunshine to help you escape the
winter blues. With more than 1000
kilometres of coastline, you can take your
pick of secluded beaches to laze upon.
Snorkel alongside whale sharks, manta
rays and turtles at Ningaloo Reef, meet the
dolphins at Shark Bay, hike through the
ancient environs of the Kalbarri river gorges
or marvel at the unique landscape of the
Pinnacles Desert.
Pack up the car and head north along the
new Indian Ocean Drive for a day trip or
on an extended break. You can spend your
days fishing, four-wheel-driving, swimming,
surfing, diving, whale watching and
enjoying magnificent views of carpets of
vibrant wildflowers.
Maybe you’d prefer to head further
north this winter. You can enter a world of
adventure in Australia’s North West. Here
you’ll find yourself captivated by gushing
waterfalls, ancient ranges, island-studded
seas and rich Aboriginal culture.
You can live it up in Broome, get away
from it all on a vast cattle station, cruise the
milky-green seas of the Buccaneer
Archipelago or fish for a mighty barra.
It seems no matter what you’re yearning
for you’re sure to find it in our great state.
So grab your partner, some friends or the
kids and take a break.

Escape to the City
This winter why not escape to the city on an overnight stay or mini-break
and immerse yourself in the kaleidoscope of winter experiences on offer.
YOU could really live it up and book
yourself into a swanky hotel before visiting
some of the activities occurring as part
of the City of Perth’s Winter Arts Season.
Dance, music, theatre and visual arts will
brighten the city during this jam-packed
festival program. After the shows, enjoy an
intimate dinner in one of the many classy
restaurants, or maybe end the day with
a visit to one of the city’s new small wine
bars.
Then, by day, set out to discover the city’s
many treasures. Indulge in some winter
shopping in the CBD and Northbridge, visit
museums and galleries or hire a bike and
cycle around the river foreshore. You could
also try one of the city’s free guided city
walks or head to Kings Park and enjoy a
picnic followed by a walk through the
native bushland and gardens – the ideal
way to spend a day with loved ones.
In fact there’s so much to do in the city
this winter that a single mini-break just
won’t be enough.

Piazza beats on in the heart of
Northbridge
Now in operation for over a year, the
Northbridge Piazza has grown to become
a well utilised public space in the heart of
WINTER ESCAPES AROUND PERTH AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Western Australia’s entertainment district.
The Piazza Screen has now established a
calendar of regular activities that caters for
a range of audiences from local
filmmakers looking to gain valuable
exposure to families looking to enjoy a free
film under the stars.
On the first Sunday of every month the
Piazza transforms into a kids playground
with Piazzarama Northbridge. Between
12pm – 7pm free entertainment such as
face-painting and circus activities are on
offer to entertain the young ones as well as
the screening of two classic kids’ movies.
In addition to Piazzarama, on most
Saturday evenings the Piazza screens a
family focused movie at Free Flicks for Kids
and every Tuesday evening is student film
night.
With community groups regularly
presenting events on the outdoor space,
the Piazza is a great place to see on a visit
into the City.

In winter, the peace, tranquillity and pace of life on Rottnest Island allows
you to totally relax, unwind and marvel at nature’s wonders.
AS the bustling summer crowds disperse
and the temperatures cool, Rottnest Island
transforms into a romantic winter getaway.
To really chill out, hire a beachside cabin
and delight in the gloriously indulgent feel
of wiling away the hours with books, board
games, coffee and bottles of wine.
Just imagine yourself rugged up warm

Or, if you’re looking for a little more
activity, join one of the many tours at
Rottnest – many of them free. These tours
range from historical journeys back in time
to nature appreciation and star gazing. Also
be sure to head up to the Wadjemup
Lighthouse to take in the sweeping ocean
views – best done on a lighthouse tour.
Depending on the season, nature lovers
can book themselves on a charter to look
for migrating humpback whales. Or maybe
you’d prefer to stroll on the beach,
delighting in the antics of seabirds soaring
across the grey skies.
And to really get the blood pumping,
hire a bike and explore the isle’s farthest
reaches. Find a hidden bay and comb the
beach for shells, breath in the invigorating
coastal air and delight in the feel of the
cool sand beneath your toes.
Just a weekend away at Rottnest

Escape to the Perth coast
Stormy seas and rugged weather make for romantic
coastal breaks during wintertime.
THE Perth coast takes in the colourful sea
port of Fremantle in the south and
continues north along city shores to
Lancelin. Book yourself into one of the
stylish hotels lining the coast and spend
a perfect winter escape overlooking the
ocean from your cosy hotel.
Fremantle
Fremantle’s a great place to visit in winter
as the many pubs, shops and markets
entice you away from the wintry world
outside.
Why not spend some time in Fremantle’s
many museums, lost in the mesmerising
world of yesteryear? The Shipwreck
Galleries are particularly fascinating, rich in
tales of maritime triumph and tragedy. The
Fremantle Prison, WA Maritime Museum,
Army Museum, Fremantle Arts Centre and
History Museum, the Roundhouse and the
Energy Museum are also on offer here.
Or perhaps shopping is your thing. Then
head to High Street to stock up on winter
14
fashions in one of the funky designer stores
– think rich fabrics, jackets, boots and
stylish accessories.
Then, of course, there’s the food. Just
imagine yourself tucking into warming
foods and steaming coffee on the famous
cappuccino strip, watching the world go
by. Or perhaps you’d prefer to be tucked
away in the corner of a historic hotel,
sharing a drink with friends or maybe
warming yourself by a fire.
Or what about taking the whole
family? Rug up warm and head to the
Fishing Boat Harbour to enjoy fish and
chips on the boardwalk. Then treat the
family to a trip to the weekend markets
and see what quirky treasures you can find.
When it comes to accommodation you’ll
find a range almost as diverse as the city
itself. Try a stylish hotel to really live it
up or indulge in the home comforts of a
bed and breakfast tucked away amid the
historic streets - ideal ways to escape the
winter blues and truly unwind.
WINTER ESCAPES AROUND PERTH AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Sunset Coast
Why not rekindle the nostalgia of a
long-time tradition by grabbing your
family, your partner or a bunch of friends
and indulging in a relaxing winter’s drive
along the Sunset Coast?
Of course all along the coast you’ll also
find a great range of accommodation to
choose from to really extend your time
and explorations on a winter escape to the
coast.
Start in the bustling seaside mecca of
Cottesloe, perhaps enjoying a meal in a
cosy, ocean-side café. Sunday morning
brekkies at Cott are particularly popular,
and have become something of a social
institution for many.
Next on the agenda is Scarborough. Even
in winter it’s enthralling to sit on the beach
and watch the surfers carve through the
winter swells. There’s also plenty of cafes
here to choose from for a morning coffee
or lunch.
Stop off at Sorrento Quay where you can
immerse yourself in the bustling holiday
feel, no matter what the time of the year.
You may also like to check out the
enchanting underwater world at the
Aquarium of WA (AQWA).
Further north, you’ll reach Mindarie
Marina – the largest man-made marina in
Australia. This stylish development is
becoming increasingly renowned for its
cafes, restaurants and bars.
Continuing even further north you’ll reach
Yanchep National Park. This family getaway
is just the place for boating on the lake,
picnicking among families of ducks and
kangaroos and strolling among the koalas.
Gingin Coast to Country
With its patchwork of rolling farmyards,
rushing streams, idyllic coast and fresh
seasonal produce, the stretch of
countryside from Guilderton and Lancelin
through to Gingin offers a winter escape
that is sure to delight.
Soak up the coastal magic at Lancelin or
Guilderton then venture inland to taste
fresh produce or visit charming restaurants
and cafes nestled amid sprawling cottage
gardens. Finish your journey at Gingin, a
delightful country town set around grassy
parkland and the babbling waters of Gingin
Brook.

Escape to Mandurah and Peel
Raven Wines
Boutique Winery Pinjarra
Shake the winter blues, pack up the car and head south to Mandurah and Peel
for an escape that will have you rejoicing in the joys of winter.
STRETCHING from the white sands and
blue waters of the coast to the rugged
terrain of the Darling Scarp, the whole
region offers a wide range of winter
activities from exploring the vast waterways
and national parks, to visiting wineries and
bush walking along trails through the vast
Jarrah forests.
And if driving is not your thing, simply
step aboard the Mandurah line rail service
to Mandurah, which will whisk you from
the city to this holiday getaway in less than
an hour.
When you arrive, be sure to indulge
in some of the wining and dining for
which Mandurah is becoming increasingly
renowned. Enjoy a lunch at a café beside
the estuary or at the stylish Dolphin Quay
marina where you’ll find a vibrant array of
markets, as well as upmarket restaurants.
Or rug up warm and get outside on one
of Mandurah’s many walk trails which
meander alongside the river, by the estuary
and along the ocean shores.
18
These trails wind their way through the
city, into bushland and by wetlands – the
home of a breathtaking array of birds.
You can also book a cruise on the estuary
to really take in the wonders of the vast
waterways around Mandurah.
To really enjoy your visit, why not consider
booking into a hotel and extending your
Mandurah escape. There’s a fabulous array
of accommodation to choose from – just
imagine yourself on your hotel balcony or
patio, wiling away the hours with a good
book, looking up occasionally to watch
a bird land on the water or watching a
golden sunset reflected across the bay?
Mandurah is also the perfect place to base
yourself and take daytrips out to explore
the whole Peel region. You’ll find beautiful
wineries, charging river ways, hills cloaked
in blankets of verdant greens and tiny
timber towns nestled amid the forest.
Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire forms the
northern part of the region and offers some
breathtaking scenery with many natural
WINTER ESCAPES AROUND PERTH AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA
attractions. Be sure to visit the Serpentine
Falls while you’re in the area, which is
particularly beautiful in wintertime.
After exploring this nature-rich region, get
back in the car and head to Pinjarra, one
of the oldest towns in WA. It offers many
a chance to step back in time at significant
heritage sites.
From Pinjarra you have several options.
You may choose to continue down the
South Western Highway to Waroona and
onto the coast, or take the Pinjarra Williams
Road to Dwellingup and Boddington.
Waroona is nestled at the foot of the
Darling Range and offers a quaint town
centre and nature-rich surrounds. Towards
the coast, you’ll find the natural haven of
Yalgorup. This 12,888 hectare national park
contains 11 coastal lakes, wetlands, strands
of rare tuart eucalypt trees and stunning
native banksias.
Or, if you take the other drive option,
you’ll arrive in Dwellingup and, a little
further still, Boddington. These destinations
offer a host of ways to get the blood
pumping and escape the winter blues. Take
the plunge and experience the
exhilaration of white water rafting. Or take
to the forests and try hiking, mountain bike
riding or horse riding along a forest trail.

Avon Valley
Winter is the perfect time of the year to enjoy
the picturesque scenery of the Avon Valley.
LOCATED on a comfortable drive east of
Perth, the beautiful Avon Valley offers a
patchwork of green rolling hills, babbling
brooks, historical villages and country
charm.
The Avon Valley was the first inland
settlement in Western Australia and is an
excellent destination for exploring quaint
village streets, pottering through craft shops
and museums, picnicking on the banks of
the Avon River or setting out on bush walks.
There are countless cafes and restaurants
showcasing the fine food and wines grown
and produced locally and some charming
places to relax and enjoy the warm country
hospitality.
Why not consider staying at one of the
many small hotels and bed and breakfasts
in the Avon Valley?
You could also try the hot balloon rides
that are available at this time of the year,
where you can witness the dawn sun
embrace the countryside with light.
Visiting the vintage towns of Northam,
26
Toodyay, York, Goomalling, Beverley and
Brookton by road is a great way to explore
the Avon Valley and all of the towns are
only a 30 minute drive from each other.
Northam
Northam, Western Australia’s largest
inland town is home to over 185 heritage
listed buildings. The Avon River flows
through the town and as such picnicking
beside the river is a popular pastime,
where you can observe elegant white
swans, brought here by settlers over 150
years ago. Or, spy the swans from the
heady heights of the pedestrian
suspension bridge which passes over the
Avon - the longest of its kind in Australia.
Explore the town’s architecture on foot
and discover its many fascinating craft
stores and curio shops.
Toodyay
Toodyay is nestled in a valley between
scenic hills and on the banks of the Avon
WINTER ESCAPES AROUND PERTH AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA
River. The village presents some perfect
examples of 19th century architecture,
whilst retaining its own unique country
charm with veranda-clad pubs and shops.
Toodyay oozes colonial history and
architecture. Connor’s Mill is a fine
example, and is your only opportunity in
Western Australia to witness working
historical machinery demonstrating
antiquated flour milling processes. Head
further out of town for some magnificent
scenery and lovely country roads to travel
on. Along the way you’ll find a multitude of
olive groves, lavender fields, local artisans,
rambling country gardens and vineyards
producing their own unique blends.
York
The township of York was established in
1831. While still remaining distinct from
other towns in the region, York is yet
another fine example of colonial
architecture.
Straddling the Avon River, York is
bordered by outstanding natural beauty.
Walking or riding is always popular with the
numerous tracks and trails in and around
the town. Adrenalin junkies can also get
their pulses racing with a range of aerial
pursuits such as skydiving, paragliding and
ultra light flights in the area.
Beverley, Goomalling, Brookton
These idyllic farming communities were also
amongst some of the first established
settlements in Western Australia.
Goomalling is a delightful rural settlement
enveloped by seemingly endless open
countryside. The town had its beginning in
the 1890’s, springing up beside the train line
which was used to ferry miners through to
the goldrush towns further north.
The township of Beverley is believed to be
named for Beverley near York in the United
Kingdom and is steeped in tales of
pioneering triumphs and tribulations.
Founded in the 1830’s by early settlers in
search of good grazing lands, Brookton,
139kms south east of Perth, is also rich in
colonial history.
New Norcia
In the northern region of the Avon Valley,
along Great Northern Highway lies New
Norcia, Australia’s only monastic town
founded in 1846. During winter, you’re
bound to delight in the green countryside
and quaint village feel that descends over
this monastic town.
The heritage-listed buildings seem more at
home under winter’s muted skies, here you
can join one of the twice-daily, two hour
guided tours of the township, also be sure
to visit the art gallery and museum which
offer a surprisingly fascinating selection of
art and historical artefacts.
