Volume 23, Issue 4 July/August 2014 Page 1 Los Padres Times PRESIDENTS LETTER Your next Board/General meeting will be held at “Mama Jo’s” in Atascadero on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. Arrive early (6:00 p.m.) to order your meal. Please pay with cash or check. The speaker will be Ty Murray, CHP, speaking on the regulations of truck and trailer hauling. Hello Los Padres Unit members. It seems like everyone is busy with family, vacations and doing an assortment of horse activities. As you know by now a very limited representation attended the Santa Maria Elks Parade. Thanks to those who did participate. Our Unit took 3rd place in our horse group grading. We do have participation for the 4th of July Parade in Templeton. If you aren’t riding, just come by and walk with the group. You don’t have to have a horse to be in the parade. We always need extra hands in case horses are rambunctious. We had to cancel our Annual Youth Summer Camp at San Antonio Lake Horse Camp. Lack of interest or folks are busy attending other family activities. The extreme triple heat in North County doesn’t help, and without any water in the lake. I hope someone in our Unit is looking to 2015 to fill in on the Board vacancies that will be presented. Your Unit is looking for someone to step up and fill the positions of President and Secretary. Please do your share in supporting your Unit. YOUR NEWSLETTER: It has, again, come up to the Unit’s Board’s attention that the mailings are costing our Unit too much money. We mail hard copy Newsletters out six (6) times a year. This cost is about Inside this issue: $200.00 per mailing. That comes to about $1,200.00 per Presidents Message 1,2 year. Your Unit can better use those monies for other Board and Committee Members 2 functions. Submitted by: Nancy Kimmell – Education Templeton 4th of July Parade It was a beautiful morning in Templeton for the annual July 4th parade. We had 30 members attending and 14 members participating in the parade column representing Backcountry Horsemen of California, Los Padres Unit. Everyone looked good representing us and did an exceptional job in controlling their animals. The July 4th parade was just a fun and memorable time for all participating and watching. Many of us had members in the crowd waving to us we had not seen in years, it was a great time and a really big THANK YOU to all the members who gave up their time to participate and represent us as public relations representatives of the Los Padres unit. We did win 2nd place. Bill Obermeyer Page 6 July/August 2014 Volume 23, Issue 4 INCENTIVE QUESTION I had seven (7) responses – come on you guys – look for the answer. They were – Kathy Longacre – Monday, May 12, at 7:23 a.m.; Rose Meyer, at 8:26 p.m.; Joni Lewis – Tuesday, May 13, at 6:55 p.m.; Peggy Phaklides – Thursday, May 15, at 8:10 a.m.; Bob Skinner, at 8:16 a.m.; Shirley Rasmussen – Saturday, May 17, at 9:50 a.m.; and Greg Feinberg, at 9:51 a.m. The winner was Kathy Longacre. Kathy won $20.00 off the price our next campout. Please pay attention to the start and cut off for the questions. Get your answers in before that date and time. Thank you again for participating. The answer to the Question: What movie in April donated a portion of its opening week ticket sales to the National Park Association? The answer was located on page 1 in the President’s message in the fourth paragraph. The answer was Bears. At Disney’s D23 Expo on August 10, 2013, Walt Disney Studios’ chairman Alan Horn announced that, for every moviegoer that sees BEARS during its opening week (4/18/14 – 4/24/14), Disney will make a donation to the National Park Foundation to protect wildlife and wild places across the National Park system. The next Question is: What vehicle was designated the official state vehicle of Texas in 2005? A $20.00 certificate will be given to the person with the correct answer from the newsletter and must be presented with your pre-registration form to any of our unit’s camping activity requiring a registration fee. This certificate is not transferable and not applied toward merchandise purchase. PLEASE NOTE –IMPORTANT – RESPONSES WILL BEGIN ON JULY 12, 2014. This will allow members receiving their newsletter by snail mail to participate also. After that date, contact VIA EMAIL ([email protected]) OR PHONE CALL TO ME (805) 471-1198. THIS NEXT DRAWING WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, at our general meeting. This gives people about a week to get their answers to me. You must give me your name in your email. The winner drawn will be mailed the $20.00 certificate for remittance at any unit camping activity requiring a pre-registration fee. You may win more than once. Any questions, please contact me. Also Susan Tuttle and I are not eligible to win. Nancy Kimmell – Education Chair BCHA activities for the 40th anniversary. The Back Country Horsemen of America's (BCHA) 40th year celebration will be an 8 day "Trec" with horse drawn wagons, horses - packsaddles, and activities along the way. The Proposed Date is July 27th to August 4th, and will include work projects to demonstrate that the purpose of BCHA is, not just a riding organization but an organization to promote the use and maintenance of packsaddle trails in America. The Trail has not yet been chosen, but it looks like "Central Utah" is more of the consensus. More updates will be coming in the near future. Call Susan for more information 805 720-2418 Page 12 July/August 2014 Volume 23, Issue 4 Members Story Well first off don't buy a stolen trailer like I did. (-: Learned a whole new chapter on that one! The first thing I take into consideration when buying my trailers is size. Will my horses have enough room? Is there a lot of ventilation and air flow to keep them cool on hot days? I’ve traveled to the Sierra's a lot and driving across the valley it was not uncommon to hit 108 degrees. My aluminum roof was great for weight and not rusting but it radiated heat into the horse compartment. After adding insulation to the ceiling it was 10-12 degrees cooler. Insulation works great for heat and cold. Safety is always a first! Most folks don't understand that tires have a safe life of 5 to 6 years. Just because there is plenty of tread on those old guys doesn't mean they're going to get you to your destination. Tires build up moisture inside and will rot internally as well as crack on the outside. Don’t be fooled by tread depth alone and check tire pressures monthly!! Here is my favorite customer surprise, the floor. I can't tell you how many aluminum trailer owners don't know you have to remove the mats every 3 months to clean the aluminum floor. Horse urine is highly acidic and over a short time will eat away at the floor. This is one of the first things I check on a used trailer for sale or one in for service. It's 1,500 to 2,000 dollars to replace the average aluminum floor. Wood floors are easy to check- Take a small pick or phillips screwdriver and push firmly on the floorboard around the rear edge and rear corners of the trailer. If the tool sinks into the wood excessively you have rot issues. Horse urine and water tend to accumulate in these areas. Unlike aluminum the wood floor is only four to five hundred dollars to replace and not necessarily a deal breaker. Here’s something you probably wouldn’t think of- noise. I have had five or six trailers and never thought about the noise level in the horse area. My kids (horses) would spend four to five hours riding to the mountains and when unloading them they would be soaked with sweat. This was at night so it was not caused by heat, it was caused by stress. Crazy as it might sound my wife decided to ride in the back to see what was going on with them. It was deafening going down the road- pad holders banging, dividers and hardware clanging. It was obvious this is what was stressing them out. We looked for a new trailer and road tested everyone until we found one that was dead quite, no more issues. Keep in mind that if your present trailer is noisy, there are a lot of tricks to quiet it downand your horse will love you for it. Check for excessive tire wear. If three tires look really good but one has excessive wear on the inner or outer edge you may find the trailer has a bent axle or wheel bearing issues. Don't overlook this as just a tire replacement, it could be very expensive! Radial tires are what you want on a trailer, they run cooler, smoother and last twice as long as a belted non radial. Brakes and bearings should be checked yearly. If you buy a used trailer it is a good idea to get a full inspection at purchase. If you are selling a trailer, get one just prior to selling. You never want to show a trailer that has service issues. I can also tell you that your chances of selling are far better when your trailer is clean and detailed. Aluminum trailers are lighter than steel and they don’t rust. False!!!!!!!! Another completely misunderstood comparison. When buying a trailer it is important that you understand the difference between aluminum and steel. Steel is three times stronger than aluminum. Aluminum takes double the material to create its strength and rigidity. So for an aluminum trailer to have the strength of a steel trailer- it will be heavier than you think. Aluminum also reacts with the acid from horse urine as mentioned above. Lastly, aluminum does oxidize and fade, especially with our coastal weather. You pay premium for an aluminum trailer because the material is more expensive and the cost is higher for good skilled welders that specialize in aluminum. Steel is a good choice for the money and a can of white enamel spray paint goes a long way. About the stolen trailer…………. Yes I did buy one and here is what you need to do to not get caught in the same nightmare. As a trailer guy I inspected the list of important items I just talked about, all checked out great. It was a beautiful 3 year old Featherlite 3 horse warmblood, and the condition was perfect! After the inspection and negotiating, I made sure the pink slip was clear and registration was current and correct. I checked to see if the vehicle ID# on the trailer matched the registration and it did, so we took it home. Next day I called Featherlite to get a replacement key for the drop down windows. They asked for the trailer ID#. I gave them the # on the pink slip and they said after a short hesitation, that the trailer was not one of their trailers! I knew it was a Featherlite for sure and was starting to get getting an awful feeling about this. I asked if there was a hidden vehicle ID# anywhere on their trailers. They told me were it would be. I found it in the fender well and gave them the number. And sure enough, it had been stolen months earlier. The crooks had reregistered the trailer with a new ID# stamped on the coupler. It looked completely professional. I thought I knew it all when buying a trailer but have never run into something like this. Yes, I got my money back, and the person that sold it to me is in the hands of the authorities. Lesson here, is if you are buying from someone you don’t know or from Craig’s list (especially!!!) - call the trailer manufacturer and verify the trailer vehicle ID# and model. My wife and I could have lost a lot of money. We were extremely lucky it worked in our favor. So be very careful! CHP stolen vehicle task force informed me this problem is getting worse. For those with trailers, lock them up or try to block them with another vehicle. (And yes, it’s good to know that there is a stolen vehicle task force.) There are so many little things to look for when buying or selling a horse trailer. I do this 40 hours a week and see everything you can imagine. If you have any questions you can contact me at Heacock Trailers & Truck Accessories / Sundowner Trailers 4898442 or [email protected]. We are now next to Farm Supply on El Camino Real in Arroyo Grande. Happy trailering, Greg Landry Volume 23, Issue 4 July/August 2014 Page 13 HELP NEEDED TO CLEAN UP! This is a chance to help clean up the creek and to bring attention to the equestrian use of the levee and beach. I know it is a week day and short notice so many won't be able to attend, but if you can, please do. This is organized by Cherie Dodds of BCHC Los Padres Unit and Ride Nipomo. On Monday July 14th, 9am, Members of the various horse clubs are going to meet at 22nd street off of Halcyon in Oceano. Along the levee there is a lot of debris left from the homeless, and people who think it is okay to dump there. Oceano will provide bags, and will pick up what we bag. This is a good chance for the horse community to come together to show we love riding on the beach, & we want a safe, and decent size staging area for our rigs. Please come with your best gloves, and maybe a hoe. I’m going to try and get publicity there to show we do care, and we do deserve a place in this county to safely ride from. I have gotten in touch with some of the other clubs, but please pass this on to any other equestrian clubs you belong too. It just can’t be done with 5 old ladies. Maybe 10, but not 5. For questions call Shelia @ 440-6648. We are thinking of going to Old Juan’s afterwards to discuss the staging area, and the loot we will find. Most unique item I will buy a margarita for that individual! Thanks, Cherie Dodds On a side note, about 10% of our unit members are on my work project email list. If you know of anyone who should be on the list, but isn't please have them email me so I can add them. Richard Waller Newsletter, public lands article, Richard Waller July 2014 Point Sal; I’d like to start with a question. Would you like to be able to ride the Point Sal Road the 5 miles from Corralitos Ranch to the ocean? It is a road built by horses, mules, and men to ship produce from the lower Santa Maria valley by horse and mule drawn wagons to the port at Point Sal, yes, as amazing as it appears to any one who has looked at that rugged seascape, ships would pull in, load up with produce and sail north to San Francisco or south to Los Angeles. For no valid reason this stock built road is now closed to stock. I in my role as unit public lands officer contacted two Santa Barbara County Supervisors, Pete Adam, as he is a member of our unit, and Doreen Farr, whose district the road lies to inquire as to why the road was closed to stock, and whether it could be re opened to stock. The early history of Point Sal is outlined in The History of Santa Barbara County by J D Mason, page 299. The Supervisors read my emails, considered my request, and that is the last I have heard. I, with my position with BCHC, and planning for the OSTTREK am pretty busy, I could use some help from you, if you would like to see this road open for the use of equestrians and are willing to work on the issue, let me know…. I figure out of our 400 person membership, we should have 50 members at least ready to help out. Forest Service; due to recent retirements in the Los Padres National Forest, we have a new District Ranger for the Santa Lucia Ranger District, a new District Ranger for the Santa Barbara Ranger District and a new Forest Supervisor. We can anticipate changes, but we have no way to predict those changes, we will keep you informed of how things go. Stony Creek Bypass Trail; The Wilderness Society, a national conservation organization dedicated to our nation’s wilderness and trails and a national partner of Backcountry Horsemen of America has adopted the proposed Stony Creek Bypass Trail as part of its 50 trails for the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. They will help our unit, and SLOPOST shepherd the trailthrough the Forest Service approval process. This is great news for all of us. The bypass trail will insure that the Condor Trail will be able to be built whether an easement is ever granted along Stony Creek Road through the Huasna Land and Cattle Co.
