At the cottage, the black flies have now taken a back seat to the mosquitoes. Soon, when the water warms up for swimming, the mosquitoes will retreat to the shade and the half light of the morning and evening. Meanwhile, the deer flies and their burly cousins, the horse flies, will rule the sunny shoreline. Ahh, Ontario the Beautiful. In this newsletter, I would like to reflect on my time as a volunteer with the NSRC and a member of the Board; and to plead for help on behalf of the Members and the Board. At first, I came to the Centre to take some Bridge lessons, and after a year or so, to play Bridge on a more regular basis with the Fun Bridge and the Contract Bridge group. A year and a half ago, I joined the “Board”. It took several months, to become familiar with the members of the Board, the activities of the Centre, and the relationship of the Centre with the City. It took longer than I expected because things are not as simple as I thought they would be. Very briefly, here is how I see things. The Board advises the City's Program Coordinator (Leslie Dondale) on the activities of the City, and volunteers coordinate and fund additional activities not directly supported by the City. Specifically, the Board supports the bi-monthly newsletter (the HUB), the NSRC website, workshops, social activities such as the summer picnic, the Open House, and the Christmas breakfast, and some expenditures not paid by the City. In addition the Board holds a small reserve to assist in the future expansion of the Centre. To do this, the Centre relies on revenues from: Attendance Draws, Military Whist, craft sales, Slots trip, and the Travel Club. Recently not enough members have been willing to serve as members of the Board. If you can manage a household budget, organize a family vacation, supervise the reroofing of your house, reply to emails, we can use your skills to help Nepean seniors make our Centre the way we want it. New members will make new friends and become better acquainted with activities of the Centre and you will be assisting our City to serve the needs of Nepean seniors. Call me or any member of the existing Board to explore your interests. And, by the way, it is not necessary to be a Board member to help out. There are plenty of ways to lend us a hand. I hope a few brave souls will step forward and help us out. The Annual General Meeting is on October 18, at which time we vote on new Board members to start in 2017. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 2 of 20 PROGRAM COORDINATOR’S CORNER By Leslie Dondale 613 580 2828 Ex 2 WHAT’S UP AND COMING [HOME] CANADA DAY BBQ [HOME] This is a reminder that our Canada Day BBQ takes place on June 30th. You will enjoy a great BBQ lunch and fabulous entertainment by our own Golden Oldies and Silvertones. Sarah from Chartwell Stonehaven will be providing the delicious cake and strawberries. The deadline to buy tickets is June 24th. SUMMER FUN PICNIC [HOME] Don’t forget to buy your ticket for the picnic this year. It will take place on Wednesday, August 3rd and for only $5.00 it includes great games and a BBQ lunch provided by Chartwell Stonehaven. It will be held on the Minto field, which is the turf field located behind the Sportsplex. The deadline to purchase your ticket is July 25th. Please see the flyer with all the details. SHUT DOWN [HOME] The good news is that all of our flooring will be replaced, part this year (main entrance, hallway and offices) and the rest next year (Studios, Heritage room and kitchen). The bad news is that we will have to be shut down while this takes place. This will only affect the activities that take place in the Heritage room. I will be in touch with all of the Activity Reps to sort out the details. They expect it to only take four to five days. The Shut Down dates for this year are August 29th to September 2nd. ACTIVITY REPS MEETING [HOME] Mark your calendars now! The annual Activity Reps meeting will be held the morning of Tuesday, September 13th at 10 a.m. More details will be given closer to the date. MILITARY WHIST [HOME] rd The next one will be held on Friday, September 23 at 7 p.m. The cost is $6.00 (exact change is greatly appreciated!) and includes cash prizes and delicious refreshments provided by The Ravines Seniors’ Suites. There might still be some tickets available. Check with the office. The following one will be on Friday, October 21st and the refreshments will be provided by Island View Suites. SLOTS TRIP [HOME] th Finally the labour dispute ended allowing us to continue the trip on June 14 with 56 people signed up. Some of our seniors won money this time around, and even those that didn’t, still had fun. Now all that’s left to do is work off all the food that was eaten at the wonderful buffet. The next trip will be held on October 4th. More details will be in the next issue of the Hub. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 3 of 20 LUNCH AT SIR GUY CARLETON SECONDARY SCHOOL [HOME] Due to an unfortunate accident, the chief chef is unable work on the October lunch which is cancelled. SUMMER HOURS [HOME] Effective for July and August, the Seniors Centre will close on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. and will be closed all day Saturdays. Sundays we will be open from noon to 4 p.m. for Duplicate Bridge. WHAT WE HAVE BEEN GETTING UP TO CARPET BOWLING [HOME] By Alida Dopplinger - Here it is summer already and it is only spring! We are continuing our summer program, and even though we don't have as many people participating, we still have a good time. We start at 1 p.m. but ask people to come 15 minutes early to help set up. We finish at 3 p.m. We have a break in between with coffee, tea, cocoa and now we even have lemonade!!! We play on the concourse, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The fee is $1.00 plus $0.25 for the beverage. Give us a try, it is lots of fun. COMPUTER CLUB [HOME] By Joan Lang - The Computer Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in Hall F until further notice. We have Wi-Fi access so anybody that wishes to bring a device can. We offer lessons and help for most levels and, starting in June, we will be hosting eight weeks of lessons on Windows 10. Please Note: There will be no meeting on August 16th. CONTRACT BRIDGE [HOME] th By Gopal Kunchur - We had our spring lunch on May 18 with an attendance of 60 members (15 tables). The room was full with no space to spare. The delicious meal menu included finger food like chicken wings with a variety of sauces, coleslaw and broccoli salad, cold cuts, pickles and many other items. Sheila prepared homemade desserts which included Strawberry Festival, Ambrosia Dessert Squares, Cherry Cream Danish Dessert, Apple Ice Box Cakes and Chocolate Brownies. We gratefully acknowledge the help of Arnold, Elaine, Elizabeth, Gail, Joyce, Margrit, Norma Jean, Rose, Sheila and Dorothy. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 7 of 20 Minor suit opening and partner's response may vary, with many available options. Better minor longer suit of club or diamond or one club with equal number. Short club bid shows clubs may be short (repeat your second bid of clubs if 5 carder) and bid one diamond with four. Response to better minor and short club with 6 or more points is one heart or one spade with minimum 4 cards, or one no trump with no 4 card major. Normally you will pass one club bid if you have less than 6 points but some players have an agreement to bid one diamond with less than 6 points with unbalanced hand and one no trump with a balanced hand and also less than 6 points, showing bust hand. You will have to alert this bid. Anyone who wishes to play reasonably high level Bridge in a friendly and social environment is most welcome on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage room. CREATIVE CRAFT GROUP [HOME] rd By Donna Butler - The group will meet until June 23 and then will break for the summer. Meetings will resume September 8th. We meet in Hall F between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and, for those who want may stay until 11:30 a.m. We serve coffee and cookies too. The Quilting ladies are busy making a quilt that will go to Hawaii. It is nice and bright and very suitable for its destination. The knitters are always knitting lovely items. Some will go to charity and others will be sold in our two locations that raise money for the Seniors Centre and at the Open House and Christmas Breakfast. We hope you have noticed our new wall hanging pieces in the Heritage room. It is a new technique that the ladies have learned. The Group tie at least two quilts for Victoria's Quilts once a month. We have sent material, both fabric and yarn, to the Nepean and Osgood Resource Centre to a group of new Canadians who are learning to sew and knit. We welcome new members. Come and join us!! CRIBBAGE [HOME] th By Ken Hancock - On April 14 Pat Finter and Joe Maniscalco a scored Memorable Round of 44 points. On April 19th Sue Maniscalco achieved the third Perfect Afternoon of this year by winning all eight games, followed by Barbara Scott who achieved the forth of this year on May 10th. Then on May 24th, Debbie Smits became eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 8 of 20 our fifth Member to have a Perfect Afternoon making it one a month so far. Congratulations to the three of you. Our current Champion Scorer is Gerry, followed by Jake in second place and Margarete in third place. On May 10th we all enjoyed our first pizza lunch this year. Fifty three of our members were able to attend and, as can be seen below with Sadie cutting the slices, we certainly had plenty to eat, starting out with two large pieces each and, as there was plenty left, members were able to go to three- four --- but who’s counting – slices. Even then there was a large pizza left which was auctioned off at way below cost. On behalf of all of our Cribbage Club Members I would like to thank Ross Kerr for not only organising and managing the lunch, but for managing our session finances that paid for all of the food and the soft drinks that went with it. Since the last issue of the Hub we’ve had the great pleasure of welcoming Ray Martin and Laverne Sailes as new members of our club. We are always pleased to welcome anyone wishing to join us. Simply show up in the Heritage room any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon around 12:50 and we will be happy to include you in the fun. We start at 1 p.m. and go on to around 3:30 p.m. at the end of eight games. When your partner opens a weak 2 bid (2 Diamonds, 2 hearts or 2 spades) he or she generally promises 6-10 High Card Points (HCPs) and a 6 card suit. Suppose you have a pretty good hand and want to explore whether or not to bid further and perhaps end up in game. A good guideline to assess the values in your hand is to apply the Rule of 17. The Rule of 17 simply says – if the total number of HCPs in your hand plus the number of cards you have in your partner’s suit total 17, then you should explore to see whether or not your side should be in game. In other words, if your partner opens two Hearts and you have say, 15 HCPs and 2 Hearts, then your total of HCPs plus cards in Partner’s suit total 17 – therefore you may have a good chance to score a game, especially if partner has a good weak 2 opening. One way to explore this possibility is to respond 2NT to your partner’s weak 2 opening. This bid is forcing and lets your partner know that you think your side has a shot at game. There are then two ways the original weak 2 bidder can further describe his hand. The simplest way is for the original weak 2 opener to simply show a feature. To reply in this manner, the weak 2 opener would bid to show any outside Ace or King that he might hold. For example 3 clubs would promise the Ace or King of Clubs, and 3 Diamonds would promise the Ace or King of Diamonds etc. With no outside feature, the opener could simply rebid his original weak 2 suit at the 3 level. For the more adventuresome Bridge players among us there is another useful means to give a better description of your weak two opening bid. This is a modified Ogust response, which many people like because it is easier to remember than the various other Ogust responses. This is because it has a useful key-code. The code is simply 1,2,1,2 3. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 10 of 20 So if you happily hear your partner respond 2NT over your weak 2 Heart bid, you know he or she is interested in exploring for game. And you respond as follows to very specifically describe the nature of your weak 2 Opening: 3 Clubs (the lowest level response) shows a weak hand with 1 of the top three honors in your weak 2 suit. 3 Diamonds (the second lowest level response) also shows a weak hand with 2 of the top three honors in your weak 2 suit. 3 Hearts (the third lowest level response) shows a strong hand (9-10 points) with 1 of the top three honors in your weak 2 suit. 3 Spades (the fourth lowest level response) shows a strong hand with 2 of the top three honors in your weak 2 suit. Finally 3 No Trump shows a hand with 3 of the top three honors in your weak 2 bid suit. Sound complicated? Not really – no more complicated than any other step response system – like Blackwood for example and I know you all play that. Just look for the 1, 2,1,2,3, code in the responses above. EUCHRE NEWS [HOME] By Betsy Shorthouse - Well, here we are … summer has finally arrived. I don’t know about you but I am sure glad to be rid of the heavy winter coats and boots until late in the fall. Our Euchre Tuesdays continue to be an afternoon of extreme fun. Attendance has been record breaking. One week we had over 80 people in attendance. It is nice to see the snowbirds back with the group again. Very exciting news for September. There will be another Euchre day added. Sherry Hall and her group of volunteers will be running a Monday afternoon group. The Monday group will commence on September 12th and the costs remain the same but it will start at 1:00 pm. Tuesday Euchre begins each day at 12:45 p.m. sharp and the cost to play is $2.00 per person. There is a large parking lot at the rear of the Sportsplex and there are many bus routes that stop close by for those needing to take a bus. Hopefully we will see you soon at a Euchre game. Anyone wanting to join us please feel free to come to Hall F on Tuesday or, after September 12th, on Monday. You can come to either or both. We like people to arrive and be ready to play for 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and 12:45 p.m. on Mondays. 5-PIN BOWLING [HOME] NOTE, NO 5-PIN BOWLING INPUT THIS ISSUE DUE TO THE SUMMER BREAK eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 11 of 20 500 CLUB [HOME] By Lorrie Wilson - Summer is here at last and once again our numbers are changing as people take up summer activities. We have lost a regular couple, Shirley and Don Sullivan who have returned to their home in Nova Scotia. We gave them a fine send-off of cake, card, small gifts and a poem written and read by Joan O’Meara. Two familiar faces have gone from our group! We celebrated the coming of spring with a Pizza luncheon in early May, followed by dessert and an afternoon of cards. Highs for the past two months were: Don Sullivan with a whopping 7130 Bill Wilson with 5560 Elaine Dinelle with 5280 The 2015 to 2016 season closed with the following highs: Don Sullivan with 7130 Bill Wilson with 5880 Pat MacInnis with 5690 Don certainly made a great finale before leaving us. We play each Thursday afternoon in the Heritage Room from 12:45 p.m. to around 3:30 p.m. New members are welcome. THE FUN BRIDGE GROUP [HOME] By Wilma Matchett – Gerry Mulligan enjoys challenging his bridge partners! In April, he and Marg Milne made their Grand Slam bid of 7NT and on May 27th he and Jake Enns bid and made another Grand Slam bid of 7NT. Regularly, there have been a few Grand Slam bids that failed and some Small Slam bids that were successful (but remember even the failures have been challenging). Our aim is to have fun while enjoying the challenges! The Fun Bridge Group meets every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room for a relaxing and challenging afternoon of friendly Bridge. Participants usually arrive around 12:30 p.m. and start playing Bridge when their table has 4 players. Players change every half hour after our official start time. There are many experienced Bridge players who are more than willing to coach Bridge class graduates and those coming back to the game after an absence of many years. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 12 of 20 Officially, at Fun Bridge we don't keep score but we always encourage everyone to be a bit daring in their bidding process. Members of the Fun Bridge Group really enjoyed our Spring Luncheon, which was catered by Pinelopi's Greek Kitchen in Barrhaven and topped off by a beautifully decorated tulip cake. NEPEAN SONGSTERS [HOME] By Betty Usher – The Songsters are winding down for the summer break. Recently we visited The Court of Barrhaven (April 15th) and Crystal View Lodge (May 17th). Our final outing was a choir picnic at Andrew Haydon Park organized by one of our members, Suzan Ascroft. Rain was forecast but we took our chances and, although it was cloudy, except for a momentary shower, the weather was perfect. This event made me appreciate what a wonderful park Andrew Haydon is – developed in the days of the City of Nepean. A long shoreline, lots of shade trees, lots of parking and well maintained. Great for picnics. We are busy working on the music for our annual concert at Centrepointe Studio Theatre. The date is Sunday, November 13th at 2 p.m. Tickets at the usual $15 will be available in September. To give you a clue as to the music, the concert is titled FROM BACH TO ROCK. Hope to see you there! We welcome new voices and so if you are interested come along on Thursdays between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the Heritage room. It’s a fun place to be!! Hope to see you. SHUFFLEBOARD [HOME] By Gary Fraser – Over the last two months we had the pleasure of welcoming Lydia Zabayo who recently arrived from Nigeria for a short stay. As shown below the group presented her with a shuffleboard tshirt designed by a member’s daughter. It’s was great to have you Lydia. Now that summer is here we are seeing more of you at Shuffleboard with typically four or five courts in use. We have room for more new players as there are six courts, so if you would like some exercise and fun, come and join us. We play from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, on the concourse. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 13 of 20 TRAVEL CLUB NEWS [HOME] By Barbara St. Laurent – I would like to welcome Lynn Obenauf and Joan Terris to the Travel Club Executive. As we continue with the planning for trips in 2017, a few more new members are necessary for the Club to continue beyond the end of 2016. Some trips we are planning for 2017 are Quebec City, Western Canada and, for the more adventurous group, a trip to Iceland. Information on these trips will be available at the Travel Showcase on October 3rd, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Heritage room. We are also planning a trip on December 4th to 6th, 2016 to Niagara Falls to see the Festival of Stars & Lights as well as some very exciting entertainment. You may also call the Nepean Seniors Recreation Centre at 613-580-2828, ext. 2. VOLUNTEER COORDINATION [HOME] By Barbara St.Laurent - The recorded number of volunteer hours to date is 4,074.35. For those who are not familiar with recording volunteer hours, every minute and hour you spend volunteering your time helps with the grants received from the City for the Seniors Centre. Volunteer hours can be recorded on the forms provided in the Heritage Room or by sending me an e-mail. Please ensure you give your name and the name of the group you are volunteering for. If you would like to be a volunteer, please send your name, e-mail address and phone number to me at [email protected]. eHub Edition 4 2016 July and August Page 14 of 20 YOUR VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT BOARD [HOME] By Thelma Cartwright-Hopwood - If you want to find out what your elected Board is doing for you, please get in touch with a Board member. If you don't know which one, or if you don't have a computer, call me, your Communications Coordinator at 613-7984790 and I’ll direct your query to the right person.
