SPRING/SUMMER 2013
CONCERT
SAA-uk Summer Solstice Festival
Following on from the enormous success of the
inaugural Summer Solstice festival in June 2012,
Summer Solstice 2013 platformed a world class array
of artists within the stunning architecture of Left Bank
Leeds. The all-night spectacle broke new ground
for SAA-uk as we trialled a live-stream experience,
reaching out to both a local and global audience.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Families Together
SAA-uk delivered a project that encouraged
communities of least arts engagement to explore
cultures, skills and stories through creativity.
‘Families Together’ brought together children,
parents and grandparents in the communities of
Burmantofts and Richmond Hill in Leeds to explore,
through a series of workshops, art forms from all
around the globe. We gratefully acknowledge the
support of the Communities First Programme and
Cooperative Fund in making this project a reality.
EDUCATION
Vidyā
The SAA-uk Dance Academy, encompassing
Bharatanatyam and Kathak, has grown from
strength to strength in 2012-13, culminating in
a sell-out performance at Northern Ballet in the
production, Vidyā. SAA-uk believe passionately in
providing performance platforms for young people
and the preservation, recognition and reinvention of
Indian Classical Dance, so we were thrilled that so
many people were able to witness such an inspiring
visual spectacle.

MESSAGE FROM C.E.O
The recent spring and summer was truly Indian, from the searing heat
to the monsoon rains. Luckily for us though, our SAA-uk performers
managed to avoid the downpours, and in doing so added colour,
vibrancy and culture to the many events we were involved in.
As you open this brochure, I sincerely hope you have your diaries
to hand, whether it be on your smart phones, computers, tablets,
laptops, or if you’re old school like me, your pocket diary at the ready
to list all the dates and set reminders for the array of concerts, events,
and classes that SAA-uk has to offer this coming season.
We kick start the autumn/winter season with Anand, a celebration
of 100 years of Indian cinema through song, on Thursday 26th
September (see page 5). This begins a frantic artistic programme
including such highlights as an urban Bharatanatyam performance
at Leeds Light Night, the British Asian jazz clarinettist Arun Ghosh
in October, the hypnotic strings of Jyotsna Srikanth, Ustad Surjeet
Singh, and Kamalbir Singh to warm the winter months, and before
you know it 29th March 2014 will pop up on your reminders, so that
you can enjoy a world class performance of Yerma, a powerful dance
piece exploring the anguish of a married woman (see page 11).
November sees a wonderful joint event with Leeds Mencap entitled,
A Slice of India; stirred baked and served up in the heart of Leeds.
The fundraising day features young musicians, SAA-uk Dance
Academy, Me2 Dance group and a whole host of activities, with all
the proceeds going to both charities and their work with families and
children. (see page 9)

MOMENTOUS
Tofail Ahmed and Gurpreet Singh are UK based musicians trained in North
Indian Classical Music. They’re a duet that has performed regularly across the
UK presenting a selection of Ghazals, Geets, Bhajans and Tarana with an equal
ease to audiences of all backgrounds.
The pair looks forward to sharing their love and passion for music of the heart
and soul with the people of Leeds. Through presenting repertoire that spans
the 10 decades of Indian Cinema, the evening will bring glorious memories for
grandparents all the way through to grandchildren.

This October, a giant projection will transform Civic Hall into an enormous,
spinning, ticking, and whirring clock face. Magical cogs, levers, chimes and
video footage of Leeds people, art and culture transformed into clockwork
figures will mark the passing of time over three momentous nights.

ODE TO THE SARODE
The classical Indian dance of Bharatanatyam is given a modern day twist as
beautiful statues come to life to play with light, shape and movement.
Urban-natyam is a new experimental dance form that takes its inspiration from
the beautiful carvings of great temple walls and pillars of India and brings them
to life through 21st Century Urban city lights. As always SAA-uk is delighted
to be able to add to the diverse arts and cultural menu on offer on Leeds
Light Night, so do join us in the Crypt at Leeds Town Hall for a spectacular
performance by SAA-uk Youth Dance Academy.

This is an evening to escape the demands of daily life and turn your attention to the
deep, introspective sound of the sarode; an instrument that is powerful, majestic
and yet fluid at the same time. Its fretless fingerboard, made of steel, provides the
player the freedom to “vocalize” each note, adding depth to the overall composition
that often has the ability to touch the heart and soul of the listener.
Arnab Chakrabarty, SAA-uk Musician in Residence, is a highly renowned
musician with few that equal his virtuosity on the sarode, and received his
training from the late Professor Kalyan Mukherjea, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta
and Shri Brij Narayan. He is accompanied by an equally passionate musician,
Bhupinder Singh Chaggar, who will frame this evening of pure Classical Music
with the rhythmic sounds of the Tabla.

Conceived in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester and living in
London, Arun Ghosh’s musical style represents his rich cultural heritage. The
British-Asian clarinettist and composer is a leading light on the UK jazz scene,
captivating audiences and critics with his passionate and dynamic performance
style, eloquent musical expression and a healthy dose of rock ‘n’ roll spirit.
His two albums, Northern Namaste and Primal Odyssey have seen him
celebrated as a renowned innovator of the IndoJazz style; forthcoming
album, A South Asian Suite looks set to take this even further,
and Ghosh is delighted to be presenting this work at Seven Arts.

Over centuries composers have used melodies of Ragas as a springboard
intertwining them with other influences from around the world (Western, Middle
Eastern, Folk and Popular music genres) to create music that captures the
imagination, mood or message, entertaining the listener on one hand and
touching the soul on another.
Curated and narrated by Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, the evening will feature
a selection of Ragas presented through voice and instruments in a variety of
styles including Khayal, Ghazal, Bollywood, Geet and Dhun. The musicians will
explore the colours of the same Raga and give the audience an opportunity
to experience it in their own favourite style, be it classical, semi-classical,
Bollywood or instrumental gats and dhuns.

Europe’s leading violinist from the Carnatic classical tradition, Jyotsna
Srikanth, will be presenting her new production Bollywood Dreams.
Jyotsna Srikanth has a strong Indian classical base which has evolved into one
of Jazz-fusion, taking inspiration from her past 9 years based here in the UK. Her
recitals combine a deep understanding of traditional Carnatic music with both a
jazz and contemporary touch. This rare balance between tradition and modernity
has helped her carve a unique niche, captivating audiences across the world.
This is an evening of not to be missed by lovers of classical, contemporary
and Jazz music.

This concert features maestro Ustad Surjeet Singh on Sarangi and his
student Craig Monk on violin. Together they will share a musical conversation
with two ancient stringed instruments through the romantic and colourful Rāg
Madhuvanti. Tabla accompaniment by Bhupinder Singh Chaggar will keep
the tempo and provide the framework through which audiences will enjoy the
full colour of this popular afternoon raga.

South Asian Arts-uk is delighted to welcome Kamalbir Singh; a humble and
multi-talented Sheffield based musician. A violinist, ghazal singer, composer
and educationalist, Kamalbir has written many scores for theatre, worked on
musicals and accompanied great artists like the late Jagjit Singh Ji.
During the evening Kamalbir will delicately introduce the key characters of a
Rag appropriate for the specific time and season, steadily taking the listener
on a journey of experiencing the rasa (essence) and narrative of a story that
has been told and retold for thousands of years through this oral tradition.
Kamalbir Singh ji will be accompanied by the highly talented tabla player
Shahbaz Hussain of the Punjab and Delhi Gharanas.

February is a month often focused on ‘Love’ in its many varying forms. South
Asian Arts-uk is delighted to be presenting Ramya Tangirala, a vocalist with
a sweet and soulful voice that has a depth that is hard to describe in words
and is best to be experienced. Ramya is the granddaughter of the legendary
musician Sangita Kalanidhi Sri G.N.Balasubramaniam, whose birth centenary
was celebrated globally in 2010. Ramya’s mother Smt Sowmiya, is a well
known Hindustani vocalist and Visual Artist in Chennai.

Ramya has performed in India and worked with various Arts Organisations in
the UK, and during the evening will present Sacred Music that has its origins

The anguishing story of Yerma, a woman who suffers heart breaking
social torment of a childless marriage forcing her to commit a horrific and
irrevocable act set the scene for this powerful production. Lorca’s savage yet
poetical lyrical play set in rural patriarchal and religiously repressive Spain is
transposed to an inner city British Islamic community.
Amina Khayyam, principal dancer and choreographer will look to share the
emotions and experiences of many women in childless marriages, and the
communities they are based in, through Kathak Dance. Live musicians Debasish
Mukherjee (tabla), Lucy Rahman (vocals) James Barralet (cello) Tarun Jasani
(sarod) will add to the narrative, enabling boundaries to be crossed and explored
of a topic that is a very personal one, but touches the hearts of everyone.

Bharatanatyam dance to interpret and share stories written by members of

Singh and Upneet Singh add the layers to express the emotions or drama
through the purity of sound, awakening your imagination and allowing audience

We are delighted to announce that we have received funding to
deliver a pilot year of YIMYE – a new Yorkshire Indian Music Youth
Ensemble based in Leeds. We are grateful to Leeds Music Education
Partnership, the Sir George Martin Trust and Yorkshire Young
Achievers for supporting this new venture.
This is a new and exciting opportunity for young people aged
8-25 to immerse them in Indian classical music, and explore their art
further through ensemble performance, develop a high level of skills in
accompaniment, leadership, listening and communication as well as
having the opportunity to create new music steeped in Indian Raag.
YIMYE is an outcome of an expressed need by young people to learn
to play Indian Classical music together collectively, with young musicians
bringing their respective instruments together to give life to this centuries old
oral tradition. This is an opportunity for young musicians to feel empowered
to progress and develop confidence to participate in cultural activities may
that be as a Youth Jatha or a group presenting sacred music to a world music
band. Our ambition is to empower children and young people to play together
with confidence and be proud of their heritage and have fun, ultimately
become the musicians, educators and audiences of the 21st Century!
YIMYE will be guided by a professional leader with a focus on creating
original composition and performance as well as studying classical Rāgs.
It will offer an approach that marries the traditional and modern, classical
and contemporary, providing a wonderful experience for gifted and talented
young musicians with a unique musical interest to develop and share their
musicianship. The ensemble would be fully inclusive and open to Western
musicians with experience of playing Indian music on Western instruments.

Based on our successful pilot project in 2012, taking a group of dedicated students on a productive and enjoyable

Supported by Northern School of Contemporary Dance
This is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the study of two beautiful classical dances. Bharatanatyam
dance hails from South India, combining grace, poise and sculptural-esque movement. Kathak exudes
grace, confidence and beauty expressed through delicate body movement, fast footwork, and spins that
enhance the fine art of storytelling.

Bharatanatyam Dance has its origins in South India, but is now a global phenomenon with many
young people in the UK and across the world opting to learn this dance form.
SAA-uk is delighted to announce the continuation of its 10 week Bharatanatyam pilot project.
From September 2013 we will be offering children age 4 and all the way through to adults the
opportunity to learn Bharatanatyam Dance through a structured approach leading to grading in Dance
to be delivered by Rashmi Sudhir for this term

Carnatic Vocals – Smt Krubha Iyer
Carnatic music is a system of music commonly associated with the
southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined
to four modern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and
Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main sub-genres of Indian classical music
that evolved from ancient traditions.
Time: 7.00pm to 8.00pm – Group 1
8.00pm to 9.00pm – Group 2

Tabla Classes - John Ball
The tabla is a percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music
and in popular and devotional musi. The instrument consists of a pair
of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. The term tabla is
derived from an Arabic word, tabl, which simply means “drum.”
Playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in
various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected
in the mnemonic syllable. The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or
in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the
sound’s decay

For two disciplines or more that one member of the family there will be a 20% discount.

DHOL - THE FOLK SOUND OF PUNJAB
Calling all children, young people and adults with a passion to wake up the nation! Join SAA-uk
Dhol Classes and get the heart pumping to the beat, learn all about making great sounds and
enjoy playing in a group.

The rich cultural heritage of the Punjab is reflected in its music and dance. This colourful part of
the world is the birthplace of Bhangra - a fusion of lively music and dance. In its earliest form it
was a celebratory folk dance which welcomed Vaisakhi, the coming of spring.
PUNJABI GEET AND BOLIYAN FOLK SONGS OF PUNJAB
Calling all you lovely ladies, children and young people, come
along and learn a folk song or boli or two, have a go at playing
the Dholaki, have a laugh and drive away the blues, as well as
improving and refining your Punjabi language skills.
