2 • Fall 2009 • HOPE IN ACTION
Dear friends,
MIFA began as an alliance with lofty goals: combating hunger, alleviating the struggles of poverty
and aging, and uniting the races to bring about large-scale, positive change in Memphis. It was an
alliance of many good forces – men and women, clergy and laymen, black and white – and that fact
has been one constant in our ever-evolving organization for more than 40 years.
In this issue of Hope in Action, and in various other media in the coming months, MIFA will spotlight
individuals who represent the good in Memphis, and we invite you to participate. MIFA’s Something
Good in Memphis campaign will recognize those who make Memphis better, whether it’s the stranger
who helps change your flat tire in the rain or a human services pioneer who changes the lives of a
hundred poor Memphians.
But in order for us to recognize them, you have to tell us about them! To nominate someone you
know for Something Good in Memphis, visit www.SomethingGoodinMemphis.org. Thanks for all you do
for MIFA and Memphis, and for helping us continue to be an alliance of good in this community.
Sincerely,
Margaret Craddock
Executive Director

MIFA Meals receives MOWAA accreditation
Earlier this year, MIFA Meals was recognized by the Meals on Wheels
Association of America (MOWAA) as a Magnet Accredited Program. The
criteria for this prestigious honor range from good practices in managing
funds and staff to efficient program operations and appropriate long-term
planning. After a detailed examination of the program and our Meals
facility, MOWAA granted MIFA Meals a three-year accreditation.
MIFA joins the ranks of over 5,000 Senior Nutrition Programs (SNPs)
nationwide which have been accredited by MOWAA. Arnetta Macklin,
MIFA’s Vice President of Senior Programs, comments, “We are grateful to
the Meals on Wheels Association of America for recognizing MIFA Meals,
and we commit to upholding our standards of service and efficiency in the
future, so that we may remain a positive example to other programs.”
MIFA Meals is the first MOWAA Magnet Accredited Program in
Tennessee.
MIFA Meals staff prepare meals for delivery to homebound seniors. Earlier
this year, MIFA’s program was recognized by the Meals on Wheels Association
of America as the first Magnet Accredited Program in Tennessee.

Be something good in Memphis!
Ordinary people do amazing things in Memphis every day.
Is someone you know something good in Memphis?
We often find ourselves surrounded by unsettling news and
unsavory deeds, and sometimes the good things around us
are overshadowed by the bad ones. But it is important to keep
the good things and good people in mind, especially when
fear, anger, or tragedy shakes our foundation. MIFA’s newest
campaign, Something Good in Memphis, which debuts this
month, was created to celebrate those individuals who have
a positive impact in our community but whose achievements
go unnoticed.
MIFA was founded on the concept of an alliance of good.
It was built on the raw nerves of a city that had just seen a civil
rights leader assassinated and the chasm of misunderstanding
between two races widen. The organization began when men
and women, black and white, came together without regard
for religion or race or gender and focused on the beliefs they
shared. At that time, Addie Golden, a representative from the
United Methodist Church, said, “Those men on that MIFA
Board asked, ‘What do we have in common?’ not ‘What do
we have that is different?’ MIFA was one of the best things
that happened.”
www.SomethingGoodinMemphis.org launches mid-September!
4 • Fall 2009 • HOPE IN ACTION
In the same spirit of seeking out that common good, MIFA’s
Something Good in Memphis campaign offers Memphians
an opportunity to recognize their friends and neighbors for
having a positive impact in the community, no matter how
large or small that impact may be.

Individuals are invited to submit nominations via a simple online form, and nominees will be recognized regularly
through the end of the campaign.

the lookout for updates on MIFA’s website and in The MIFA

MIFA success story comes full circle
In preparation for MIFA’s second-annual Feed the Soul event, staff
and volunteers have been planning and organizing for months. The
event’s steering committee is an eclectic mix of local folks with a stake
in MIFA and an interest in party-planning, from architects and artists
to fundraisers and executives. One unique committee member’s life in
Memphis began at MIFA, and now her path has led her back.
When Nicole Gates moved to Memphis from Joliet, Illinois, with
her four daughters in 2005, she was intimidated by the idea of putting
down roots in an unfamiliar place. She came equipped with event planning skills but didn’t know where to begin. While thumbing through
an issue of GRACE Magazine, she saw a MIFA ad and enrolled in a 12week, small-business training program for low-income individuals. At
MIFA, she learned principles of planning, design, management, operations, marketing, and finance. When Nicole completed the program,
she became a certified meeting and event planner, and she started her
own business. Her radio show aired on WLRM 1380 AM in July of
this year. She says, “I was determined to be a success story for MIFA. I
found a fresh approach to my business, and I was able to turn my passion for entertaining friends and family into a full-time job!”
Nicole loves what she does, and she is quick to give MIFA credit.
She says, “MIFA served as a stepping stone to my many successes. I
believe that I’m living my dream every day!” She is excited about the
opportunity to use her expertise to give back to MIFA; Nicole will assist with logistics on the Feed the Soul committee this year.
