Singapore Youth Festival s
Ta l e n t
Because we believe that the youth can excel and shine with their
wide-ranging skills, SYF 2016 caters to the different peaks of talents
across different disciplines. Beyond performing, the youth will
showcase their diverse talents in areas such as composing, drawing,
designing, devising and choreography.
Diversity
Our youth have opportunities to engage in and be inspired by myriad
learning experiences and showcase platforms available in SYF 2016.
From the expanded categories within the Arts Presentation to the
variegated approach to the Celebrations, SYF 2016 gives voice to
the creative energies and diverse artistic expressions of our youth.
Possibilities
SYF 2016 encourages our youth to gain deeper insights into the
creative process through workshops and mentorships by arts
industry professionals. By leveraging on arts partnerships, SYF 2016
allows the youth to derive a richer understanding of the connectivity
between their arts CCA experience and arts industry practice. Other
creative possibilities include contests related to the SYF theme motif
design and streetdance improvisation.

Beginning in 1966 and celebrating its 50th year with the theme YOUTHforia!,
the annual Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) remains one of the most important
and versatile platforms involving our youth in schools. The SYF celebrates the
diversity of youth possibilities and talents, and has evolved alongside Singapore’s
development. The spirit and essence of SYF are centred on encouraging our
youth to jointly learn, grow and engage with the community. The Festival today
continues to spur our youth to push new creative boundaries and build enduring
memories through their shared learning and experiences on and offstage.
Through its innovative and dynamic programming, SYF 2016 is about Talent,
Diversity and Possibilities across its three platforms – the Arts Presentation in
April, and in July, the Celebrations and Art Exhibition. With hundreds of engaging
performances from contemporary to traditional music and from drama to
contemporary dance and visual art, SYF 2016 taps into the pulse of the youth
and allows them to share their passion for the arts.
Message from
Message from
Acting Minister for Education <Schools>
Director-General of Education
The Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) turns fifty this year. Beginning
in 1966 and launched on 18 July 1967 by the first President of
Singapore, Mr Yusof Ishak, the aims of the SYF were to create a
national identity and nurture the talents and abilities of our youth.
The SYF then was also a platform for students of different ethnic
groups to come together in celebration of the arts and culture,
thereby also promoting racial harmony in the process. The SYF has
been so synonymous with our education system that anybody who
has enrolled in a Singapore school would have either participated
in it or had a schoolmate who told him about his SYF experience.
Mr Ng Chee Meng
Acting Minister for Education
(Schools)
The SYF touches lives because each SYF arts performance, visual
art exhibition and foot drill presentation has been the result of
many hours of hard work and commitment by our students and
schools. Through the preparation process, our students learn
tenacity and perseverance, develop their character and cultivate
the determination to succeed. They also learn to appreciate one
another through working with fellow students from different
backgrounds to achieve shared goals. Most of all, they make lifelong friends. The cultural awareness, creative dispositions, values
and life skills acquired through the SYF experience will enable our
students to remain anchored in Singapore while remaining open
to the world and its many possibilities.
The SYF has evolved over the years, along with Singapore’s
development. Over the last few years, we have made some changes
so that students and schools focus on deepening their appreciation
for the arts and expressing their ideas and passion through their
art form, to an audience. That is why we have expanded the art
forms and increased opportunities for the public to attend every
performance. As we nurture our students’ intrinsic desire to learn
and create with friends, we will inspire generations of students
for many years to come. They in turn, will inspire our community.
I invite you to celebrate with our students and participate fully
in SYF 2016. Act on your dreams to create a promising future for
ourselves, our Singapore.
I wish all participants a successful Singapore Youth Festival 2016.
This year, the Singapore Youth Festival celebrates its fiftieth year
with the theme YOUTHforia!. Youthforia! captures the essence and
spirit of the SYF. Playing on the word euphoria, it speaks of our
youths’ effervescence and confidence as they nurture and display
their talents in and beyond the arts. We believe that every student
has the potential to shine and excel. The SYF is a platform for those
interested and talented in the arts to participate, learn and grow.
SYF 2016 is about Talent, Diversity and Possibilities. We have
made some changes to our SYF Arts Presentation in April and the
SYF Celebrations and Art Exhibition in July. In the Arts Presentation,
beyond the familiar performances such as Band (Display and
Concert), Choir, Chinese Orchestra, Dance, Drama and Instrumental
Ensemble, there is greater diversification through the introduction
of mixed and sectional ensembles as well as a wider variety of
dramatic forms.
The SYF Celebrations allow our students to develop an authentic
understanding of their arts CCA experience. Our students will attend
workshops and be mentored by arts professionals as well as view
interdisciplinary arts performances. The SYF Art Exhibition at The Arts
House, themed Artist and Space, creatively engages our students
with the concept of space as they explore, interpret and respond
to personal and public space through the art-making process. An
exciting inclusion in SYF 2016 would be the very first Uniformed
Groups (UG) Carnival at Ngee Ann City that will showcase signature
programmes and performances by various UGs.
Many defining moments of our students’ school life have come
from SYF participation. A successful SYF experience that achieves
its compelling and rich outcomes is made possible through the
concerted effort of students, teachers, instructors and parents,
each playing an important role. Through the SYF, generations
of students have forged strong friendships and built enduring
memories. The Festival has thus served as a versatile platform that
allows students to learn and grow collaboratively while engaging
with the wider community in and through the arts.
I wish all a most enjoyable and meaningful SYF.

Theme Motif
Commemorative Stamps
Designed by Muhammad Mifdhal Bin Jasini, a Secondary 3 student from Yishun Secondary School,
the theme motif is inspired by and derived from different sound waves coming together.
Artist statement
“My logo design is derived from sound waves. I wanted to show the creating of sound or music
from the different sound waves coming together. The different sources are shown by the
different colours of the waves and they represent the diverse backgrounds of youths. The crests
and troughs of the sound waves come together to form the word ‘YOU’ to show that this festival
is about ‘YOU’, the youths.”

SYF 2016
Art Exhibition
Artist
And
Space
The SYF 2016 Art Exhibition Artist and Space invites student artists to interpret the theme in
personal and distinct ways. Students are encouraged to explore the concept of space creatively,
not just from a physical perspective but also from psychological angles or socio-cultural points
of view. In the process, students discover what ‘space’ tells them about the people, places and
environments they encounter and are able to express what this concept means to them.
Friday, 1 July: 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Opening Ceremony of SYF 2016 Art Exhibition, The Arts House
Guest-of-Honour: Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education
Saturday, 2 July to Sunday, 10 July: 10:00am – 10:00pm
SYF 2016 Art Exhibition and Fringe Activities
From Monday, 18 July: Extended Showcase at Lobby, MOE Building (Buona Vista)
Space matters. The nature and concept of space are constantly shifting in our time of rapid
urbanisation as our society develops and our surroundings undergo perpetual change. Beyond
referring to a physical place, space forms a foundation for how people relate to one another –
both individually as well as collectively. It captures our emotive and psychological expression,
and embodies our socio-cultural values. Space can be both a temporary moment in time and
an enduring record of history. Artists, past and present, have challenged us to rethink our
relationships between each other and our environment. They have responded to the concept of
space in various ways through their art practices: to record, to express an emotion or to represent
their pure fascination for the space.
