In 1994, the first Santa Cruz Bicycle
rolled out of our old cannery home
and straight into every mountain
bikers’ psyche. It was an innovative
aluminum 3" travel single pivot frame
called the Tazmon.
Santa Cruz Bicycles was founded
in California a year prior, with a clear
mission and understated ethos:
to create suspension frames that
were “simply advanced”.
Leapfrogging hardtails and diving
straight into full suspension was as
committed as it got back then. It
defined an uncompromising design
ethic from the get go. Underpinned
by a quiet promise to ourselves
that every Santa Cruz must only be
engineered and tested by us.
20 years later and we remain fully
pinned to those principals, obsessive
in our pursuit of that most fickle of
chimeras; the perfect mountain bike.
So until we get there, we’ll just keep
chalking up the benchmark ones.
Quality Bicycles Since 1994.

DESIGN &
ENGINEERING
page 7
Here at Santa Cruz we’ve never
kowtowed to industry doctrine. We
worked with aluminum when others
questioned its merits. We worked
with carbon fiber when naysayers
cried warranty apocalypse.
We made it work, and work better
than people believed it could. Not by
using exclusive materials, but through
solid design and engineering.
Sure, anyone can make a carbon
fiber bike these days. But there
are no industry norms upon which
to judge them. So we set our own
high standards, and reach them
using proprietary techniques. We
lose bulk where necessary, but
never compromise durability to
reach meaningless weight-watcher
targets. That’s why you can rally our
lightest XC bikes down the gnarliest
of trails, safe in the knowledge we
offer lifetime bearing and crash
replacement programs, backed up
with a 5 year warranty.
Virtual Pivot Point (VPP®) is our
patented suspension system that is
at once easy to summarize and yet
complex to explain. Two short links
that rotate in opposite directions.
Easy enough. Where it gets
astrophysical is in the application of
that principle to the different intended
purposes of the bike. With various
shock, drivetrain, wheel size and
travel configurations to play with, this
is where the alchemy begins.
We don’t want to dumb things
down, nor do we want to fill acres of
print on the matter either. So our gift
to the environment is to save all the
fine detail to our web site:
santacruzbicycles.com
Here you’ll find everything you
need to know about what we do, how
we do it, and why the head of design
and engineering is quarantined in his
own corner. Please stop by.

CHAMELEON
A stalwart of the Santa Cruz range, the Chameleon almost needs no introduction these days.
Its loyal fan base is so fanatical our designer should be on a witness protection program each
time he makes improvements. Thankfully the easily interchangeable rear dropouts, tapered
head tube and ISCG 05 mounts have kept everyone in their happy place... and kept this 26"
swiss-army knife as the reference in hardtail versatility.

The Superlight29 is an open invitation to discover real mountain biking, Santa Cruz style.
29" wheels and 100mm of single-pivot suspension combine in a deceptively simple design
that pays attention to the details. Like higher leverage ratios on the small and medium sizes
to ensure lighter riders make effective use of the travel. And industry-leading standover and
frame weight for a bike of this class. The Superlight29 rolls and pedals with such efficiency
you’ll have gone the extra mile before you even know it.

TALLBOY
When Tallboy first launched, it wiped the floor with everything in its
category. Awarded “Bike of the Year” time after time, the balanced
geometry and proprietary carbon lay-up created a killer package
that didn’t need meddling with for over four years. And still doesn’t.
Kind of. Geometry of the all new Tallboy remains true to the original. However, we've fine-tuned the shock rate, improved pedaling efficiency, increased stiffness and reduced weight to make this
Don of 29 the kind of sequel Francis Ford Coppola would approve of.

The Blur TR harbors enough split personalties to drive journalists nuts.
Is it the perfect aggressive bike for XCers? Or the ideal XC bike for DHers? Or how about the
ultimate 26" weapon for those mythical dual slalom, 4× or slope-style categories?
However you analyize it, a stiff 125mm VPP®frame, low bottom bracket height and 68° head
angle make for a crazy amount of fun, and that’s all that matters.

BANTAM
Sharing the same mega-agile geometry as the 5010, the new Bantam punches way above its
weight for a trail bike in this category. 125mm of single-pivot suspension and a robust collet
pivot axle system create a rock-solid trail tool that’s as awesomely simple as it is tough.
27.5" wheels deliver those fabled rolling benefits without comprising maneuverability,
leaving the indomitable Bantam ready to go the distance if you are.

5010 pushes further into the realms of 27.5" possibilities. Developed using what we learned from Bronson, the comparatively lower bottom bracket
height, shorter chainstays and 125mm of VPP®travel give 5010 its snappy, nimble, ride.
Responsibly offered in Mountain Rescue Orange, a 68 degree head angle and 5lb frame
weight adds climbing agility into the equation, defining 5010 as the tool for that back
country mission you’ve always planned.

Two decades of evolution at Santa Cruz brought us here. An entirely new frame, new wheel

massive uphill capability, Bronson screams onto the scene like a Group B rally car for World

With a continually growing tally of World Cup podiums, World Cup wins and World

Honed from years of brutal testing by the Santa Cruz Syndicate, the production V10 is exactly
