The geographic position of
the island of Krk together
with its favourable traffic
connection to the mainland
could be seen as its primary
advantages both as a tourist
destination and as a home
to its inhabitants. The island
of Krk is the largest island in
the Adriatic. It is located in
the most western part of the
Adriatic and at the same time
is the closest to the mainland.
Krk bridge, with a total length of 1430 metres, connects
this island to the mainland
thus making it easily accessible. This bridge has been
used for the last 36 years and
during the first 20 registered
a traffic total of 27.2 million
vehicles. With the nearby
islands of Rab, Lošinj and
Cres, Krk is connected daily
by a ferry service throughout
the year. It is also possible to
access the island by plane,
with the airport being situated to the north of the island.
The town of Krk, located
close to the very large bay
on the south-eastern side, is
the economic, administrative
and cultural centre. Together
with nearby villages located
within the hinterland, the
city has a surface area of 18
km2. The town’s hinterland
is a tranquil and rural area
where the original way of
life from days gone by has
been preserved. Recently,
even these settlements have
been involved with the
tourist flow of the island with
a rural farm holiday offer.
Based on the 2011 census,
there are 6243 inhabitants
living in Krk. The entire
area of the town of Krk, in
particular the town itself,
has been strongly involved
with tourism and the service
industry and has a rich cultural and historical heritage.

MONUMENTS

CITY WALLS
Various layers in the town walls
encompassing the town completely,
and preserved even today, were built
between the Illyrian period and
the fall of Venice. The first record
of today’s walls dates from the time
before Christ. The last important
extension to the walls occurred
at the end of the 15th century.
7 THE LARGE
TOWN DOORS
KAŠTEL
The Frankopan fortress was built
in the period between the 12th
and 14th centuries, mentioned
in the reports by the Venetian
providore. The fortress has a
number of purposes, such as
protecting the town against attacks
from the seaside, and the square
rook serving as a courthouse.
The height of the walls is 9m.
Once the town became
encompassed by walls, these doors
became the main entrance to the
town from the seaside, increasing
so because they were originally
positioned to the south, at the end of
the decumano, as well as the square
itself. They are mentioned in 1350.

TOWN COUNCIL HALL
On the ground-floor of this rook
structure from the 15th century,
there city doors existed. The rook
was constructed by the islanders
without paid wages. Located on
its eastern wall is the emblem
of duke Augustin Barbaring.
Under it is the clock with 24
fields first mentioned in 1538.

KAMPLIN

The name of the square is derived
from the Latin word campus,
meaning field. During Roman
times, a training area was located
here close to the thermaspas. The
remnants of the temple columns at
thesquare gives witness to a large
building from Roman times.

VELA PLACA SQUARE
This is the only town square
preserving the characteristics
of a square. It is first mentioned
in 1263. The six-sided well on
the square dates from the 16th
century. Under the square is
a valuable archaeological site,
revealing otherwise, the oldest
part of the town walls dating from
the 4th to 3rd century B.C.
THE SMALL DOORS
Originally, these were located in
the walls of the bishop’s court as the
southern end of the street cardo.
Here, due to southern gusts and an
extension to the bishop’s court to
the west, they were relocated during
the 14th century. In front of these
doors there was a small mul-gate:
an entry to the town for fishermen.

SPLENDIDDISSIMA
“Splendid Town of Krčan” is the
inscription from the Antic tomb
stone dating from the 9th century.
A replica is found on the main town
square Vela placa (square) and this
is also the first written record of
the existence of the town of Krk.

ROOK ON THE
SHORELINE
A six-sided rook with western and
southern wall sections dating from
the Middle Ages. Prince Nikola
Frankopan had it constructed
in 1407. This is recorded by the
inscription and family emblem
engraved into the Roman tombstone
from the respective century and
a presentation of the couple.

ROMAN MOSAIC
The remnants of Roman thermal
spas are found on the ground floor
of the Vasilić house, in Ribarska
street. It originates from the 1st
century, is well preserved and
shows a mythological sea scene.
The central character is Triton
around whom dolphins and
other sea creatures are dancing.

BELL TOWER
The cathedral received a Gothic
styled bell tower in the 16th
century. In 1767, instead of the
present acute top, a Baroque
domed bell-tower was built with a
wooden angel. Today, the angel is
made of polyester dating to 1973.
VOLSONIS
The first discovered town walls.
The historical excavation is tied
to the forum – the central section
of the Roman municipium. The
altar from the 1st century was
found from the ‘Venerina temple’
collection, the first and only on
the eastern Adriatic coast.
12 THE TEMPLE
OF VENUS
Venus is the Roman goddess of love,
beauty and marriage, born from
the sea’s foam, chosen by Paris. She
was the most beautiful goddess
of the whole Roman Pantheon.
The number of Temples of Venus

within the Roman Empire was
significantly less when compared
with temples built for other Roman
gods at the Pantheon, as approval
from the emperor’s family itself
needed to be granted before
building could commence. This is
the only temple dedicated to the
goddess Venus to be found on the
eastern side of the Adriatic and
dates back to 1st century BC.

CATHEDRAL
Originally, the three apsidal Old
Christian basilica (5th century)
was raised on the remnants of the
Roman baths. In the cathedral,
on the northern side, there is a
baptistery. Today, the three apsidal
Roman cathedral (12th century)
was segregated and extended a
number of times. The internal
section is ‘supported’ by 14 columns,
and one from the northern row
(closest to the altar) is the only one
with very rare Eucharistic symbols,
each side has two birds eating a fish.

OF ST. QUIRINUS
A precious example of Roman
architecture from the 12th century.
The three apsidal church was built
from local white stone. Here, it is
the only older two-storey church. It
was once connected to the cathedral
as its matroneum – an area where
mass was attended by women. It

SAINT DONAT
A first-class monument of Croatian
sacral architecture. It relates to
chapel from the first-half of the 12th
century, a quadrilateral layout. From
its central rhombus area covered by
a dome, there are three apses. Don’t
be surprised when standing before
the exceptionally valuable Croatian
sacral architecture heritage, a unique
prototype. It is a world heritage site.
A three apsidal Romantic church of
the ex-Benedictine monastery from
the 11th century. It was originally
consecrated to St. Michael. When
defending the town against
cholera, in the 19th century, its
title was changed. The bell tower
on the western facade dates to
the same period as the church.

A Gothic style from the 13th
century. Today’s sacristy was the
church’s primary section. The bell
tower was built later, its upper
section in the 18th century.

KOŠLJUN
The Franciscan islet. In this oasis of
peace and well-being, the religious
have for centuries been gathering
and storing many valuable items
that can today be viewed in the
ethnographical and sacral museum.
The monastery possesses a rich
library with around 30,000 volumes.

WHAT TO SEE
was consecrated to St. Quirinus
– the patron saint of the town of
Krk. Today, it contains a valuable
sacral collection – of course, more
valuable is the exhibited altar piece
from the 15th century showing
motifs of Mary’s crowning.
SAINT GRYSOGONUS (SV. KRŠEVAN)
A monument with the highest value
dating to the 11-12th centuries.
Around the circular base with
the dome there are three semicircular apses with half-domes. it
is located above Čavlena Cove.

SAINT QUIRINUS
- SACRAL COLLECTION
The valuable sacral collection is
represented in a unique multistorey Romantic church. Exhibited
are the pluteums (altar barriers)
with cross motifs and cypresses,
a wood statue of the Patron from
the Gothic period, and of course,
the most valuable being an altar
piece from the 15th century which
shows the motif of Mary’s crowning.

The Franciscans are first
mentioned in Krk in 1277. At
first, the monastery was part of
the northern town walls. The
eastern wing was raised in 1910
as the minor seminary. Here, a
picture of the Mother of God with
the Child from the Renaissance
painter Vittore Carpaccio is kept.

COLLECTION
The two-storey family house
equipped with antique furniture,
utensils and tools, reflects an
atmosphere of “the way it was
before”. When you sightsee,
keep in mind, that this was
not long ago (only fifty or sixty
years ago) that what you see was
considered modern and normal
equipment in a family home.

Archaeological collection,
museum, gallery.
In this gallery located at the bottom
of the Roman street cardo, a
valuable archaeological collection
can be seen including chosen art
paintings and original ceramic
souvenirs. Archaeological collection
in the private ownership of Mr.
Italo Samblich contains items
from the Roman Empire period
(1st – 5th century) and a smaller
number of bronze items from
the prehistoric period (3rd – 1st
century B.C.). All items have been
found in the Krk town area, mostly
in graves west of the town walls.

FRANKOPAN PRINCES
out. On the 30th April 1671, at
9:00 am in the morning, they
were punished and sentenced
to death in front of the town
armoury in Wiener Neustadt
near Vienna.In a special burial
ceremony, on the 30th April
1919, their posthumous remains
were transferredto the grave
behind the main altar of the
Zagreb cathedral. There they
lie still today, available for
pilgrimages and honouring
by the Croatian people.
Krk was one of the strategic
Frankopan towns which
today has inherited a very well
preserved Frankopan castle on
Trg kamplin – an ideal natural
scene and coulisse of summer
cultural performances and
the prince’s court - the Krk
residency of these families.
Worth visiting is the family
chapel in the cathedral– a nice
example of Gothic style. Besides
these material heritages, Krk
endeavours to preserve the
memorial of the Frankopans by
reviving the spirit of their times
through various events that the
town leads back to the Middle
Ages, back to the Renaissance
period where costumed
prince and princess, the
populace, pages and shooters...
parade silently Romantic.

The family tree of the great
Frankopan family draws
its origins from the Krk
princes, and is mentioned in
documents dating from the
12th century. The name of
Frankopan is has been recorded
by history since 1430.
The town of Krk very
meticulously preserves the
tradition of the patrician families
who along with the Zrinski
family, are proudly called the
magnates of Croatian culture
and history. They were great
figures in political and economic
terms, continually striving for
Croatia’s self-determination.
In this attempt they perished,
and their family was wiped

HOLIDAY
The ideal geographical location
is an advantage that the island of
Krk has well assessed in terms of
tourism. We refer to the closeness
of the mainland when twenty
years ago a bridge was constructed
linking Krk with the mainland,
making it even more accessible.
Good transport links have made
the island of Krk a favourite
excursion destination, but also
rich one-day excursions can be
made form the island as well.
We most of all recommend an
excursion to the Plitvica Lakes and
Northern Velebit national parks.
The real researcher amongst you will
of course want to discover Rijeka the centre of the Primorje-Gorski
kotar County, and staying in Rijeka
should include a mandatory visit to
Opatija – the tourist ‘Adriatic pearl’.
Interesting is the one-day visit to
Istra, where we strongly recommend
a stay in its central region rather
than on the coast! Finally, the
island of Krk is linked to the three
islands Rab, Cres and Lošinj by a
ferry line which may also become
destinations for your one-day
excursions. Don’t miss out!
Once you’ve chosen quality
accommodation based on your
own criteria and gained at least a
general impression of the town by
getting to know its most important
parts, everything is then ready for
the start of your active vacation.
This is what, Krk can offer:
the climb. Lovers of mountain
biking can travel the same route
along roads that are not asphalted.
Nevertheless, no matter what route
you decide to take, you will meet
many bicycle enthusiasts along
the way, waiving to each other as
you go by. You’ll surely like it!

When riding a bike during the
summer days, it is best to wake early
and chose the morning freshness.
You can chose for your route on
asphalt roads and investigate the
hinterland area of the town of
Krk, which covering quite a large
area, extends along the western
area of the island. The degree to
which this route is demanding,
depends on how fit you are.
The road, covering twenty or so
kilometres, will lead you along a
tranquil area. If you want to add
culture to this recreational event
through culture, head for the
Franciscan monastery at Glavotok,
while a special experience is offered
in searching the close chapel of
St. Grysogonus (12th century),
completely isolated in the middle
of the forest. Having chosen this
route, and should you physically
be up to it, you can head for the
ferry pier at Valbiska and travel to
the neighbouring island of Cres.
The climb ahead is not easy, but
you will enjoy the natural scenes
which will surely help you conquer

of the souvenir, as a kind of the
city representation, posing as a
reflection of the continuity of
its artistic, cultural and culturalhistorical heritage, whilst at the

by means of a competition which
is conducted by the Town Tourist
Board on an annual basis. High
criteria are set for the selection,
but some of the more important

distinctive to the island’s climate.
For those wanting more than a
material souvenir as a memento
of a holiday destination, there
are a variety of exhibited items,
including a wide range of artistic
creations, decorative and useful
objects, as well as clothes, local
gastronomic products, and a
series of attractive publications.

BEACHES
Before covering the beaches, we
would like to make a commentary
concerning the sea at the bathing
grounds in the town of Krk. The
sea is clean, very clean! The best
supporting evidence for this is
offered by six blue flags each year
gained by town beaches meeting the
high criteria for quality seawater,
and associated amenities: sanitary,
hospitality, sporting, recreational,
and along with a compulsory note
that the beaches provide access to
the sea for persons with special
needs. In the town area of Dražica,
there is a beach for dogs, a separate
area where dogs can swim and
seek relief from the summer heat.
The cleanliness of the sea at the
beaches, nonetheless, is owed to the
fact that the beaches are covered in
shoal or are rocky with landscaped
sunbathing areas. If you get the urge
to go discovering and seek intimacy,
and also know how to drive a boat,
we have news for you. In the town
port find out where the dinghies
for hire are moored. Discuss the
terms with the owner and head out.
The shoreline directly close to the
town is a real treasure of hidden,
intimate shoal coves which at least
for a day can become your private
beach. This will be an experience
just as though you brought back a
souvenir from your annual holiday!

center itself, the town of Krk, plan
the time you’ ll spend getting to
know the settlements around the
town. If you decide to head east,
after only eight kilometres you’ ll
be awaited by KORNIĆ, a village
with two adjoining settlements
- Muraj and Lakmartin.
What is most important to see in
the area, you will see even before
you enter the respective places.
At the intersection where you will
leave the main island roadway and
head uphill, you will see an unusual
building – 1 the church of St.
Donat, a first-class sacral monument
of Croatian architecture. However,
it is possible that you’ ll be attracted
by the unusual dome-like building
even without warning.It concerns a
chapel from the first half of the 12th
century, a quadrilateral area covered
by a dome and three apses. Don’t
be surprised by its simplicity. You’re
standing in front of an exceptionally
important Croatian heritage of
sacral architecture, its original
prototype. A world heritage site.
2 In Kornić itself, we direct you to
inspect the ethnographic collection
and visit the local 2 church of
Saint Jacob, built in the mid 19th
century in a Baroque style. Should
you continue on the road, you’
ll enter Muraj, and then the last
settlement in the area – Lakmartin.
Here, visit the chapel of Mary’s
Annunciation (it is also called
the chapel of Saint Anthony of
Padova). At the beginning of the
18th century, this chapel was built
by eleven families, nine of them
donated the fields and forests,
while he other families supplied
the materials and built he chapel.

The property where today the
Franciscan monastery of Saint
Mary rises with its adjoining
church, was donated in the 15th
century to the Franciscans by
Prince Ivan Frankopan. This
place had for centuries been a
center for literacy and education,
while the monastery is keeps
today a significant collection of
glagolitic manuscripts and books.

Ask the religious for short directions
where to go, the path through
the forest, from the monastery to
reach another monument of the
high value, 2 the church of Saint
Grysogonus, which is as small as a
box of matches, and as monumental
as the cathedral. It dates back to
the period 11th - 12th century.
Around the circular base with
the dome there is a series of three
semi-circular apses with halfdomes. The forest in Glavotok is a
protected natural heritage as a 3
special forest vegetation reserve.

This area is called Šotovento, and
consists of a series of villages where
tourism has still not penetrated
or is only just beginning. You
will pass through the picturesque
villages of Linardić, Milohnić
and Brzac. On the far north
you will arrive at Glavotok,
located on the very shoreline.

you with its simplicity and nature.
It is located directly close to the sea,
and has completely preserved its
uniqueness and traditional style of

Pinezić is a settlement located close
to the sea and already completely
discovered by weekenders who
have, especially during the 1980s,
in great numbers constructed their
vacation houses. This is the reason
why this place is very intensively
lived during the summer. Below
the village there is a small pier
and a nicely arranged beach.
See:
1 the church of Saint Fuska
by the sea, 14th century, where
during renovations, part of a
Roman wall was discovered,
including amphora and graves.
It is believed that these are the
remains of a Roman Rustic villa or
a Roman maritime observatory.
In the neighbouring village
of Skrpčići, visit:

dating from the 17th century.

Thematic weekend events
where guests can encounter a
rich offer of events for active
holidays in and around the town
of Krk - walking, cycling, diving

Above all, this title reveals the long
tradition of the organisation of these
cultural shows during the summer
months. Tradition in respectable!
The programme of these shows
includes musical and theatrical
presentations, classical music
concerts, ballets and drama. The
performers are all affirmed Croatian
artists as well as foreign guests.

A Fair of Unforgettable Experiences
An event whose tradition dates
back to 1524. A medieval fair and
popular festivities are organised
on Kamplin Square in memory
of the Frankopan celebrations
connected to the feast of St.
Lawrence.A rich entertainment
and music programme is organized
over the three days, in the evening
hours. Do not miss the only
Croatian competition in manual
cutting prosciutto which is an
integral part of Lovrečeva.

most effective in Croatia.

of households waste but we aim to
sort 80% of waste until 2020.
