HOPE`S - Cornerstone Of Hope
HOPE’S MESSENGER SPRING 2014 OPENING LISA’S BUTTERFLY TREEHOUSE HONORING 2014 CHAMPION OF HOPE MR. FRANK SCARPA UPCOMING SPRING PROGRAMS CLEVELAND 5905 Brecksville Road Independence, Ohio 44131 216.524.4673 COLUMBUS 1550 Old Henderson Road, Suite E-262 Columbus, Ohio 43220 614.824.4285 CORNERSTONEOFHOPE.ORG 11TH for cornerstone of hope Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse There is now a treehouse at Cornerstone, but this is not just any fort built in the woods from old lumber. World renowned treehouse builder Pete Nelson and his team from Nelson Treehouse and Supply were the architects behind this newly created therapeutic space in the trees. Pete and his crew are the stars of Animal Planet’s hit television series Treehouse Masters. Cornerstone of Hope was selected by Animal Planet to be the first non-profit featured on an episode of the show. The eighteen day construction timeline ended with a community unveiling on November 17, 2013. Although the experience was filled with total excitement from start to finish, the actual episode did not capture the true meaning behind the treehouse which is known as Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse! Did we just celebrate our 11th Annual Gala? It seems as if it were only yesterday that we wrapped up our ten year anniversary Gala. No words can describe how humbled we are each year by the amazing generosity of our guests and the hundreds of volunteers, store owners, business leaders and supporters who made this entire evening possible. We appreciate all that you did to make our Annual Gala a spectacular event. One resounding word that we kept hearing from our guests was COURAGE! The three amazing stories that were shared during the video presentation were absolutely courageous. Dina and Bob Parmertor opened their hearts to the community after losing their son, Danny, in the Chardon school tragedy, and two Cleveland Central Catholic students, Nikkayla and Camarie, both expressed their transformative school support group experience. Each story had common themes of suffering, comfort, compassion and ultimately hope. Their witness was not only important for the community to hear, but also validated Cornerstone’s core value of excellence because we only use master’s level professionals to lead every one of our support groups. In 2013, we facilitated 78 support groups that served 812 unique individuals. When Lisa Kurtz Luciano: a business leader, philanthropist, dedicated wife, mother of eight and mentor, lost her battle to cancer, she left a surprise gift to Cornerstone from her family’s foundation. Lisa knowing that her diagnosis was fatal wanted to do something that would ultimately help her own children and other youth who experience the death of a parent. Lisa was all about the kids and her enormous, compassionate and generous heart was always focused on others and never herself. No words can describe how much she is missed…no words. In addition to this gift, the late Mr. Sam Lucarelli donated $100,000 at last year’s Gala to do something special in honor and in memory Lisa Kurtz Luciano. A swing set was the first thought, but that wasn’t special enough to capture the spirit of these two amazing souls. The idea of a treehouse was captivating! What child wouldn’t find joy and excitement in a magical treehouse? If you are interested in viewing a rerun of the episode titled “Wild Butterfly Escape”, visit animalplanet.com for future times. If you want to experience Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse in person, we are hosting a community open house on Sunday, May 18, TABLE OF CONTENTS 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00pm followed Page 3 Gala by a family rosary at 4:30 pm to offer our prayer intentions for all those Page 4 Education and Training who have been affected by cancer. Page 5 Camp Page 6-7 Cleveland Updates Page 8-9 Groups and Programs Page 10-11 Columbus Updates The cameras have come and gone; however, Lisa’s Butterfly Treehouse will stand forever in loving memory of this amazing woman! Lisa and Sam, we promise to always keep your spirit of generosity alive by serving others. Another core value of Cornerstone of Hope is compassion. Our 2014 Champion of Hope recipient, Frank Scarpa, certainly understands what compassion is all about. Mr. Scarpa is the managing partner of New York Life’s northern Ohio general office. Frank leads a team of over 160 agents. By company standard, when they deliver a death benefit to a family, their obligation is complete; however, New York Life goes above and beyond the minimalistic criteria of complete. Under Frank’s leadership, his team becomes involved on a routine basis to refer grieving families to our center, to volunteer at for annual Camp Erin program, and to host a signature fundraising event–A Taste of Hope–which benefits our programs directly. Since 2010, New York Life Foundation, key staff and local agents have contributed over $250,000 to help serve grieving children and their families in the greater Columbus and Cleveland communities. Gala Sponsors: Proudly Supporting Cornerstone of Hope’s 9th annual 10th 11th Annual We welcomed a new mistress of ceremonies to the stage, Brooke Taylor, of 95.5 the Fish Morning show. Brooke talked about her own experience of losing her Dad and how she continually relies on God’s grace to provide healing through this life experience. Guest of honor Bernie Kosar mingled with the crowd, signed autographs, took pictures and even agreed to go out to dinner with live auction winning bidders. Familiar friends are always in attendance at The Gala: OSU legend and ESPN analyst Robert Smith hosted the evening along with Brooke, Cleveland’s favorite sons Troy Smith and Teddy Ginn Jr. attended along with another Buckeye and Browns legend Tom Cousineau. Local news anchors, Denise Dufala, Dawn Kendrick, Denise and Tony Zarella accompanied radio personalities Jimmy Malone and Chip Kullik to fill the room with local celebrities. Speaking of “filling the room”…we cannot express how grateful we are for the pure kindness of the local companies and friends who purchased tables to support our grief support work. Seven hundred guests attended the night that featured fantastic prizes and auction items: a get-a-way cruise, an Italian vacation, dining experiences, unique gift items, specialty raffles and local art. By the end of the night, Cornerstone raised $370,000 toward our $1.2 million annual operating budget. Wow! Cornerstone of Hope is truly blessed. We hope you can join us next year at the Rockside Embassy Suites on Saturday, February 21 for our 12th Annual Benefit Gala! C.J.
