AND
THE
BEACH
Sex, Lies and... Myspace
By Matthew Bretz
I
’m walking down the aisle, bridesmaid
on arm, ready to take my place at the
front of the makeshift church next to the
groom. One of my best friends is getting
married. I’m the best man. And as I look
through the collection of well-wishers I
find the best smile in the room shining
right at me (after the bride, of course).
Sometimes - the best times - when you
meet someone there is an instant connection. Unplanned, unexpected and completely un-boring. That’s what happened
with me and Pam. It took us most of the
wedding reception to actually speak to
each other, but the looks we exchanged
throughout the night spoke pretty loudly.
And when the festivities were through
and the bride and groom went off to
find their groove, I found myself driving
forty-five minutes back to my house with
Pam in the passenger seat.
We did not have sex.
Now before you go throwing darts at
my picture and referring to me as various parts of the female anatomy, let me
explain. I liked this girl and I wanted her
to know it, so we slept together, but fully
clothed. This is probably a bigger deal
for me than it should be.
The next day we began a relationship. It felt good, it felt like a perfect fit.
But in the beginning things always seem
great, don‘t they?
It wasn’t long before our lifestyles
clashed. My busy work schedule and her
impatience didn’t quite jibe and we were
soon fighting more than we were “making up”. I still saw potential in the connection, but the timing seemed off, so
after only a couple months in I called it
quits. I thought that would be the end of
the story, but fortunately for your entertainment value - it was not.
F
rom the start I watched Pam lie to her
friends and family creating elaborate realities for various reasons. Even
by seeing me she was deceiving her best
friend who sweetly had a crush on me. In
retrospect that should have been a huge
flashing, red flag shaped neon sign. But if
you’ve been reading my stories, then you
know by now I’m kind of an idiot when
it comes to women. A sexy smile and a
cute pair of ears - yes, I said ears - do a
disappearing act with my common sense
every time.
After we stopped seeing each other
life went back to normal and it wasn’t
until many months later that we talked
again.
My birthday was coming up and
I asked Pam if she wanted to come out
and help my friends and I celebrate another year survived. It had been a long
time and I missed her, so I was glad when
she said yes. I had no expectations of romance. But I was curious to see if there
might still be a spark there. My curiosity
was moot though, she never showed.
She called to apologize and asked, if
she could make it up by coming to a gig I
had in a few days. She flaked on that too.
One more time she called and offered to
plan for the following Friday night. One
more time I agreed.
Friday came and, again, she did not
show. When I text her to ask if she was
still coming, the only reply I got was that
her ex had surprisingly come to town and
was staying at her house. I waited for
more explanation, but that was it. I decided then and there that Pam was a lost
cause even as a friend and I should just
write her off the page. So I did.
A few weeks went by and I had all
but forgotten about it. Then one night I
got a call from my buddy Patrick - newly
married, brother of Pam’s best friend. He
said they were out for his sister Kara’s
birthday and wanted to invite me for
drinks. When I showed, much to my chagrin, Pam was there too.
So let’s recap and take note of the
situation at hand - just to make sure we’re all up to speed.
Kara is Patrick’s sister. I was the best man at Patrick’s wedding where I met Pam. We dated in secret so Kara wouldn’t
find out that Pam was lying to her. I stopped seeing Pam and
months later made plans three separate times with her only
to be stood up each time. It was now Kara’s birthday and
everyone in the room knew there was history between Pam
and I, except Kara. How do I get myself into these situations?
We didn’t talk, we didn’t look at each other, we didn’t
even acknowledge each other’s existence. And it wasn’t
long before Pam and Kara took off back to the next leg
of the night. Shortly after my phone went crazy buzzing
with texts from Pam. She was sorry about everything and
wanted to talk. I text her back- “let’s talk now“. She said
she couldn’t but would call me in the morning. By that time
I was more than a couple beers in and I wasn’t about to be
put off again. So, crazy drunk me decided it was a good idea
to call and call until she picked up, so we could have it out
once and for all.
Finally her phone stopped ringing but when the voice
on the other end spoke it wasn’t who I was expecting.
“Can you stop calling? We’re trying to sleep”, said the
MAN on the phone.
“Who is this?”, I asked- very surprised to be asking
that.
“This is Gary, Pam’s boyfriend.” - “Boyfriend?!”, I was
a little stunned. “I’m sorry man, I definitely would not be
calling if I knew she had a boyfriend”.
“Have you ever heard the name Gary before?”, he asked
me, searching for something.
“No I haven’t, sorry”
“Pam says that you two aren’t seeing each other because she told you she was getting back together with me.
Is that just bullshit?”
I explained to Gary that I had never heard his name or
the word “boyfriend” mentioned anywhere in the mix. I did
tell him that I had seen Pam a couple hours earlier and that
she had text me after, never once dropping even the slightest hint about him.
“I think you probably know better than I do that Pam
doesn’t tell the truth very often”, I told him. “I won’t be calling again. Good luck!” and with that I closed my phone.
It was a weird night and once again I thought that chapter was done and over. Again- I was wrong.
A few days later I opened my myspace page and found
a new message and a friend request from none other than
Gary. It went something like this:
been “Trying to start a new life” with me, she has been living many. I don’t want any beef with you, as I see that it’s
silly for two grown men to fight over a girl who tells many
lies and creates a reality fit for no-one. I would, on the other
hand, like to compare notes so when she comes home today,
I know the full story. I’m sure I have some things for you to
enjoy as well within this wonderful web of lies lived by Miss
(name changed to Pamantha). Please give me a buzz and
hopefully we can share a beer one day.
Talk to you sooner than later,
Gary
I
liked his style so I wrote back and in a bizarre twist I
began to strike up a sort of odd friendship with Gary. We
compared notes and information and it wasn’t long before
we both realized just how many guys Pam had been playing
and how many people she was lying to.
In the end, as strange as it sounds, I still have hope for
Pam. Not for her and I, not even for her and Gary, whom I
advised to run for his life - just for her as a person. We all
have different sides and facets to ourselves. I saw a very
sweet side to Pam once upon a time and that’s what gives
me hope. But for me, I’m ready to move on to my next
adventure and I can only hope Gary sees the light and finds
a less damaging situation for himself as well. The dating

Saint Patrick’s Day Street Party
M
eg O’Malley’s Irish Restaurant and Pub has become a landmark and a tradition for party-goers, and the most sacred
holiday of the year is St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. That calls for
a major street-party with a parade, Irish music and dancers, Corned
Beef and Cabbage, and Meg O’Malley’s is “Central Station”.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians presents the 18th Annual St.
Patrick’s Day Parade. Yes, the parade has been a Melbourne tradition all along sponsored by the City
of Melbourne But it wasn’t until
Meg O’Malley’s opened its doors
that this event turned into a major
festivity.
The parade is held on Saturdays, this year on March 14th at
12 noon beginning West to East on
East New Haven Avenue ending at
Depot Drive. Afterwards the streetparty starts with food, drink and
live entertainment.
And since the actual St. Patrick’s Day is Tuesday, March 17th,
Meg O’Malley’s is doing it all over
again, starting at 8 am with an Irish
Breakfast and all the fixings for a
fabulous party.

March 18 At The King Center, Melbourne:
Willie Nelson
W
illie Nelson’s career has spanned six decades. His catalog boasts more than 200
albums. He’s earned every conceivable award
and honor that can be bestowed to a person in
his profession. And he has also reputable credentials as an author, actor and activist.
Born April 30, 1933 in Abbott, Texas, Willie Nelson
and his sister were raised by their paternal grandparents
who encouraged both children to play music. He began
writing songs in elementary school, and played in bands as
a teenager. After high school he served a short stint in the
Air Force, but music was a constant pull.
By the mid Fifties he was working as a country deejay
in Ft. Worth, while continuing to pursue a musical career,
recording independently and playing nightclubs. He sold
some of his original compositions, including “Family Bible,” which became a hit for Claude Gray in 1960.
That success and others convinced Willie to move to
Nashville, where record labels were initially resistant. His
14 - Brevard Live March 2009
songwriting talents were quickly
embraced, however, and 1961
proved to be his breakthrough year.
His “Hello Walls” became a nineweek No. 1 for Faron Young, and
Patsy Cline’s version of “Crazy”
became an instant classic.
In 1962, Nelson scored his first
two top 10 hits as a recording artist for Liberty, but struggled for a
breakthrough for the remainder
of the decade. Disillusioned with
Nashville and with his label RCA’s
insistence on lush, string-laden arrangements, he moved back to Texas in 1972. Emboldened by the rock
and folk music becoming popular in
Austin, Willie and his music began
to change.
His first Atlantic album, 1973’s
Shotgun Willie got the attention of
the masses, and the 1974 follow-up
Phases & Stages helped him build a loyal following. The
breakthrough he’d been seeking for the better part of two
decades came in 1975 when he parted ways with Atlantic
and signed with Columbia.
Red Headed Stranger became one of country’s most
unlikely hits. The acoustic concept album vaulted Nelson
to country music’s top ranks, much to the surprise of Music
Row. Willie’s convention-busting stardom, combined with
the concurrent popularity of maverick Waylon Jennings,
prompted journalist Hazel Smith to dub the trend “Outlaw
Music” and a movement was underway.
Nelson’s stardom soon translated to another medium
with roles in feature films including The Electric Horseman, Honeysuckle Rose, Stagecoach and many more. And
the hits kept coming.
“On The Road Again” reached the top of the charts in
1981, “Always On My Mind” was a crossover smash in
1982, and a duet with Latin pop star Julio Iglesias, “To All
The Girls I’ve Loved Before,” raced up the charts in 1984.
The Nineties brought more success, and one notable
challenge. A $16.7 million dollar bill from the IRS forced
Nelson to sell many of his assets, including homes, and
resulted in the release of The IRS Tapes: Who’ll Buy My
Memories. Willie cleared the debt by 1993, and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame that same year.
Most recently he performed in a video with Toby Keith
featuring the No. 1 single “Beer for My Horses.”

March 5 At The King Center, Melbourne:
Arlo Guthrie
O
ver the last four decades Arlo
has toured the world winning
over a broad and dedicated following.
In addition to being an accomplished
musician, playing the piano, six and
twelve-string guitar, harmonica and a
dozen other instruments, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller whose hilarious
tales and timeless anecdotes are woven
seamlessly into his performances.
Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and
a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New
York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to
Combat Huntington’s Disease. He grew up surrounded by
dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred
Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco
Houston, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie
McGee, all of whom were significant influences on Arlo’s
musical career. Guthrie gave his first public performance at
age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was
shaping the world during the 1960s.
Arlo practically lived in the most famous venues of
the “Folk Boom” era. In New York City he hung out at
Gerdes Folk City, The Gaslight and The Bitter End. In
Boston’s Club 47, and in Philadelphia he made places like
The 2nd Fret and The Main Point his home. He witnessed
the transition from an earlier generation of ballad singers
like Richard Dyer-Bennet and blues-men like Mississippi
John Hurt, to a new era of singer-song writers such as Bob
Dylan, Jim Croce, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs. He grooved
with the beat poets like Allen Ginsburg and Lord Buckley,
and picked with players like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson.
He learned something from everyone and developed his
own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a
crowded community of singer-songwriters and politicalsocial commentators.
Arlo Guthrie’s career exploded in 1967 with the release of “Alice’s Restaurant”, whose title song premiered
at the Newport Folk Festival helped foster a new commitment among the ‘60s generation to social consciousness
and activism. Arlo went on to star in the 1969 Hollywood
film version of “Alice’s Restaurant”, directed by Arthur
Penn.
With songs like “Alice’s Restaurant”, too long for
radio airplay; “Coming into Los Angeles”, banned from
many radio stations (but a favorite at the 1969 Woodstock
Festival); and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman’s
“City of New Orleans”, Guthrie was no One-Hit-Wonder.
An artist of international stature, he has never had a hit in
the usual sense.
Today Arlo spends nearly ten months of the year on
the road, and is frequently accompanied by his son Abe.
On special occasions, his daughter Sarah Lee and her husband Johnny Irion contribute acoustic guitar and supporting vocals. His daughter Cathyaliza heads the business office in Nashville, and daughter Annie heads the main office
in Sebastian, Florida.

Commander Cody
C
ommander Cody and His Lost
Planet Airmen formed in 1967
in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Legendary
for their marathon live shows, they
were among the very first countryrock bands to take their cues less from
folk-rock and bluegrass and more from
hardcore barroom country of the Ernest
Tubb, Ray Price style, and to incorporate Western Swingtheir style along
with rockabilly and rhythm and blues.
Other bands, such as Asleep at the
Wheel, would later cop this approach.
The Commander Cody Band docks at
the Iron Horse annually, still piloted by
George “Commander Cody” Frayne.
With hits like Hot Rod Lincoln (1972)
and one of Rolling Stone’s top 100 albums of all time Live From Deep in
the Heart of Texas (1974) Commander
Cody’s brand of rock & roll, R&B, and
gritty country rock is always a favorite
live.
Today the Commander Cody
Band is closely knit with the legendary
George Frayne a.k.a. “The Commander” (leader /keyboards/vocals), Steve
Barbuto (drums/vocals), Rick Mullen (bass) and Mark Emerick on lead
guitar and vocals. Frequent guest steel
guitar appearances by Bobby Black,
Tiny Olson, John Wingren and Don
E. Curtis of Scotty’s Music add to the
fun. This new edition of the band harks
back to the instrumental virtuosity and
spontaneity of the original band , and
the response from critics and crowds
have been overwhelmingly positive.

B
Tinsley Ellis
orn in Atlanta in 1957, Ellis grew
up in southern Florida and first
played guitar at age eight. He found the
blues through the backdoor of the British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds,
The Animals, Cream, and The Rolling
Stones. His love for the blues solidified when he was 14 and went to a B.B.
King performance.
Already an accomplished teenaged
musician, Ellis left Florida and returned
to Atlanta in 1975. In 1981, Tinsley
formed The Heartfixers, a group that
would become Atlanta’s top-drawing
blues band. After cutting Cool On It
and Tore Up with The Heartfixers, Ellis was ready to head out on his own.
He sent a copy of the master tape for
his solo debut to Bruce Iglauer at Alligator Records. Georgia Blue, Tinsley’s
first Alligator release, hit an unprepared
public by surprise in 1988. Critics and
fans quickly agreed that a new and
original guitar hero had emerged.
Averaging over 150 live shows a
year, Ellis has played in all 50 states, as
well as Canada, Europe, Australia and
South America. Whether he’s out with
his own band or sharing stages with The
Allman Brothers, Robert Cray, Koko
Taylor or Widespread Panic, he spreads
his jaw-dropping licks, thunderous axe
work and intense vocals everywhere he
goes.

harming, mellow, sultry but
wholesome girl next door, Olivia
Newton-John has garnered numerous
Grammy awards in pop and country.
Her unique blend of a clear and
light voice combined with delicate
sensitivity and tenderness captured
American hearts in the mid-seventies
with such classic songs as “I Honestly Love You” and “Have You Never
Been Mellow.” She has also been
honored with Female Vocalist of the
Year Award from the Country Music
Association. A pinnacle in her career,
Newton-John starred opposite John
Travolta in the 1978 biggest selling
musical movies of all time, Grease.
The movie sound track spawned three
of her biggest hits, “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Summer Nights” and
“You’re the One That I Want.”
Newton-John acted occasionally
since Two of a Kind. She appeared in
the 1996 AIDS drama, It’s My Party.
In 2000, she appeared in a role as
Bitsy Mae Harling, a lesbian ex-con
country singer, in Del Shores’ Sordid
Lives. Newton-John’s television work
included starring in two Christmas
movies, A Mom For Christmas (1990)
and A Christmas Romance (1994) both Top 10 Nielsen hits.

I
f you are an Elvis Presley fan, then
Jack Smink is your guy! Nobody
makes The King’s memories become
alive better than him. And it doesn’t
matter if you see him performing on
stage or meet him in person - Ladies
and Gentlemen, Elvis Presley is in the
house!
Jack Smink always reminds his
fans that he does not want to be like
Elvis but humbly pays tribute to the
King Of Rock’n’Roll. Well, he’s doing
a good job with this - and sometimes
you could almost forget...
Jack hands out lots of scarves at

fall nothing short of Elvis Lives!
What makes it even better is that
Jack comes with an entire orchestra
and back-up singes - just like the King
did in the good old days, Las Vegas
style. He even recorded with Elvis former back-up singers The Jordanaires
a song he co-wrote, “Just One More

Chris Ayer
hris Ayer got his start singing
along to old cassette tapes of Elvis & Paul Simon on car rides as a kid
growing up in Virginia. When his Dad
got him his first guitar as a teen, he began writing songs that same day. After moving to northern California, he
started sharing his songs locally, while
studying philosophy and music at Stanford University. Chris released his first
EP, Static, in 2003, and followed it up
with a live album in 2004, an album of
acoustic demos in 2005, and a largely
self-produced EP, New Songs (2005).
After some time spent writing and
playing local gigs in northern California, Chris decided to move himself to
New York City. Lately he’s spent most
of his time traveling town to town.
His first full-length album, This Is
The Place, was recorded in Nashville
and produced by Jason Gantt. Though
the style and influences vary throughout the song cycle, Ayer’s uniquely
poetic and direct songwriting remains
steadfast; it is a traveling album about
looking to feel at home in the world.
And its growth, thanks almost entirely
to fan word-of-mouth, has been a testament to how folks connect with these
songs. It has enabled Chris to hit the
road for the better part of the last year,
playing throughout the US and UK.

March 27 At The Melbourne Auditorium:
Gary U.S. Bonds
T
orn in Jacksonville, Florida, Bonds was living in Norfolk,
Virginia in the 1950s when he began singing in church,
and with a group called The Turks. He joined record producer
Frank Guida’s small Legrand Records label, and Guida changed
Anderson’s name to “U.S. Bonds” in hope that it would be
confused with a public service announcement advertising the
sale of government bonds and thus get more airplay.
he Oak Ridge Boys are a country and gospel group
that was founded in 1945 as the Oak Ridge Quartet and became popular during the 1950s. They became The Oak Ridge Boys in the early 1960s, and they
remained a gospel-oriented group until the mid 1970s,
when they changed their image and concentrated more
on country and pop music.
Bonds’ first hit was the song “New Orleans” (reaching #6), which was followed by “Not Me”, and then by his
only number one hit, “Quarter to Three” in June 1961. Other hits included “School Is Out” (#5), “Dear Lady Twist”
(#9), “School Is In” (#28) and “Twist, Twist, Señora” (#10)
in the early 1960s. In a 1963 tour of Europe, he headlined
above The Beatles. His hits had an infectious joyfulness and
a unique sound which some have described them as seeming
to have been “recorded under water.” His “Quarter to Three”
appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs
that Shaped Rock and Roll” list.
In the early 1980s, Bonds had a career resurgence, working off collaborations with Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van
Zandt, and the E Street Band. Later hits included “This Little
Girl” (his comeback hit in 1981, which reached #11 on the
pop chart and #3 on the mainstream rock chart), “Jolé Blon”
and “Out of Work”. Bonds continues to release albums sporadically, and today is a mainstay of the nostalgia concert
circuit.
While Gary U.S. Bonds is mostly known for achievements within rhythm & blues and rock and roll, he often transcends these genres. His song “She’s All I Got”, co-written
by Jerry Williams, Jr. (better known as Swamp Dogg), was
nominated for the Country Music Association’s “Song of the
Year” in 1972 when it was a big hit for Johnny Paycheck. He
is also an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation.
In 1972 the Oak Ridge Boys recorded a single with
Johnny Cash and the Carter Family, “Praise the Lord and
Pass the Soup”, that put them on the country charts for the
first time. In 1977 the Oak Ridge Boys fully switched from
gospel to country with the release of their first ABC Records
(later absorbed by MCA) album, Y’all Come Back Saloon.
Two songs from that album reached the top five on the country charts, and their next album, Room Service, in 1978, gave
them two more, including their first #1 hit, “I’ll Be True to
You”. The Oak Ridge Boys Have Arrived was released in
1979, and Together followed in 1980.
The group’s sixth album, Fancy Free, released early in
1981, contained the Dallas Frazier-penned song “Elvira”.
This remains the group’s most widely known song, and
Fancy Free is their best-selling album. “Elvira” had been recorded by other artists, including Frazier himself in the late
1960s and Kenny Rogers in 1970, but the Oak Ridge Boys
were the first to have a hit with it.
Their 30 years of chart-topping hits include “Bobbie Sue,” “Thank God for Kids,” “American Made,” and
“Dream On.” They’ve scored 12 gold, three platinum, and
one double platinum album and had more than a dozen national Number One singles and over 30 Top Ten hits. The
band’s current lineup consists of lead singer and second
tenor Duane Allen, baritone William Lee Golden, tenor Joe
Bonsall, and bass Richard Sterban.

Paul Anka
P
aul Anka first became famous as a teen idol in the
late 1950s and 1960s with hits songs like “Diana,”
“Lonely Boy,” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder.”
He went on to write such well known music as the
theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson
for which he was paid $5,000 per episode and Tom
Jones’ biggest hit “She’s A Lady,” and the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra’s signature song “My Way.”
In the 1960s Anka began acting in motion pictures as
well as writing songs for them, most notably the theme for
the hit movie The Longest Day. From his movie work, he
wrote and recorded one of his greatest hits, “Lonely Boy”
and also “My Home Town”, which was a #8 pop hit for
him the same year. He then went on to become one of the
first pop singers to perform at the Las Vegas casinos.
In 1975, he recorded a jingle for Kodak called “Times
of Your Life”. The jingle became so popular that Anka recorded it as a full song, and it became a hit a year later.
In 2005, his album Rock Swings, comprising big-band arrangements of contemporary standards, provided a mainstream comeback of sorts and saw Anka awarded a star on
Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto.
Paul Anka who is celebrating his 50th anniversary in
show business has entertained audiences with his charismatic persona and talent. Named by Billboard as the 21st
most successful artist of all time, putting him along side
music greats Elvis Presley and the Beatles, he has established himself as a prolific and successful singer/songwriter with over 900 songs to his credit.

nown mostly as a session musician, Leon Russell
has played with artists as varied as Jerry Lee Lewis,
Phil Spector and The Rolling Stones. With a solo career
spanning the genres of rock, blues, and gospel, Russell
began his musical career at 14, lying about his age to
land a gig playing backup at a Tulsa nightclub to play
with Ronnie Hawkins behind Jerry Lee Lewis.
Two years later, after settling in Los Angeles, he studied guitar with James Burton, and worked sessions with
Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. After becoming a part
of Phil Spector’s studio group, Russell played backup on
many of the most popular hits of the 1960s, including The
Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and Herb Alpert. He
also served as Snuff Garrett’s assistant on numerous productions.
Russell built his own recording studio in 1967, and recorded his first LP, Look Inside the Asylum Choir, in a collaboration with Marc Benno. His first songwriting hit was
Joe Cocker’s 1970 cover of “Delta Lady”, and Russell went
on to organise Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.
Shortly thereafter, Russell released another solo album, Leon
Russell, which included the popular “A Song for You”.
For several years, he stayed largely out of the music
spotlight, releasing Anything Can Happen in 1992, and then
releasing two more albums in 1998 and 1999. Russell continues touring, often on nostalgia tours, sometimes with Willie Nelson.

A News Headline From Another Perspective
Murder On My Street
By Matthew Bretz/ photos by Tim Bretz
I
t a quiet neighborhood - until one day when
a senseless act of violence changed everything. Detectives were questioning everyone
on the street and the media wanted the dirt.
For the last couple of years I have lived across the street
from Paul Cadigan, a 62 year old retired cop from New England, Paul had moved down to the sunshine state to enjoy his
senior years. Us Floridians know this is a common tale…
you can feel it every time you leave your driveway. But I
was soon to find out Paul was not a common man.
He had only been in the neighborhood a few weeks and
one night while I was hanging out with friends on the front
porch I heard a strange sound coming from the my new
neighbors house. I walked down to the end of my driveway
trying to figure out what I was hearing. Then I saw him. Paul
had been sitting out in front of his house drinking beer and
was now passed out on the front walk away snoring. That
was our first “introduction”, so to speak.
After that Paul would drop by now and then for a beer
when I was grilling out, or I might hangout with him and
shoot the breeze on his front stoop. Paul liked the ladies and
wasn’t shy to offer his opinions on any that might visit me
at home. We were never close friends, but he was a colorful
neighbor and I enjoyed him being on the street.
It was no secret to anyone on the street that Paul indulged in what seemed to be “escort” services. Strange cars
would come to the house at all hours carrying women of
various ages. They would disappear inside the house only to
emerge 30 to 40 minutes later when their ride would return
to pick them up. Maybe it wasn’t the most desired element
to bring into our area but he kept his activities to himself
and even the cop living next door to me didn’t seem to mind
much. He was a lonely man in his sixties with little or no
local family. If he needed to reach out…even it was a little
outside the law, I wasn’t judging. Even when he started calling code enforcement on me for not cutting my lawn I didn’t
much care. I knew it was just Paul being Paul.
About a year ago Paul had an internal breakdown of
sorts. He suffered a major kidney failure, as well as other
ailments spurred on by his weight and drinking. Paul was
temporarily paralyzed and stranded on his couch. The next
door neighbor found him 4 days later dehydrated and close
22 - Brevard Live March 2009
to death in a mess of his own excrement. Months went by
and he recovered. There was hope that his lifestyle would
calm down but it wasn’t long before he was back to a steady
diet of women and booze. It obvious that his loneliness was
always going to overpower his will to be healthy
Paul was killed Super Bowl Sunday. You may have seen
it in the paper or on TV... “Palm Bay man killed…found in
Holopaw.”
It’s all true. But I’m concerned about the entire story
not being told. So this is what it looked like from across the
street.
One day I came home and police were everywhere. Detectives were questioning everyone on the street and forensic specialists were meticulously going through his house.
All we knew at that point was that he was missing. Two days
later we were told a body had been found in Osceola county. It fit the description. Another two days went by. Coming home from work I pulled into my drive. As I opened
the door I was approached by a reporter and camera man
from Eyewitness News Channel 9. They turned the camera
on - and told me it was confirmed that Paul indeed had been
murdered - to record my reaction. I agreed to an interview,
but they were disappointed when I wouldn’t answer questions about the seedier side of Paul’s life. A man had been
murdered and they wanted the dirt. It’s a shame that it isn’t
news enough that a human being’s life was cut short. Other
neighbors on the street offered hearsay stories, debauchery
with no real proof that only added to the sensationalism and my nausea.
Another day went by and the police made an arrest. A
woman named Diane M. Parker is a licensed masseuse and
apparently Paul had been seeing her for therapy. He had a
potentially debilitating bone disease and the massage helped
ease the pain. Paul had money problems and police are theorizing a badly ended argument about non-payment was the
catalyst for her to kill Paul, cut his head off with a hunting
knife and dump him in the woods.
Browsing the internet I came across a couple of websites run by Miss Parker. The first one paints a picture of a
life loving hippie who raises pigeons and plays guitar. The
site I found is very different. It’s called www.HowToGetEvenWithYourFavoritePerp.com and on it she rants about her
warrior-strength and how she will bring justice to those that
have hurt her. The defense rests, your honor!
Brevard Live
Yesterday I gathered in the street with some of my
neighbors to talk about what happened, what we knew of
it anyway. I was disturbed to hear nothing but catty gossip
about his lifestyle. One woman even threw an “I can’t say I
didn’t see it coming” into the fire. What is it they say about
stones and glass-houses again?
During his career as a detective Paul was a decorated
hero. He saved 3 children from a kidnapper. No matter what
anyone else thinks a hero doesn’t deserve to go out the way
he did. My regret is that I didn’t take more of my own time
to visit with a very lonely, very pained man. Would it really
have put me out to walk across the street and let him tell me
the same joke for the 30th time?
There is an old couple, probably in their 80’s, that walk
up and down the street every day holding hands. One day I
made a point of stopping my car to talk to them and let them
know how much it makes me smile every day to see them.
There are people around us all the time that are in need of
just a little human concern. People that have become invisible in our lightning-fast society. We go about our busy lives
so focused on our own problems and schedules that we lose
touch with the people around us. I would love to walk out
my front door right now and see Paul drinking beer on his
stoop. And if I did, I would go over and have one with him.
But I can’t and that makes me sad. He was a fellow human
being on a journey much like yours and mine and no-one
ever knows how it will end. I think the best anyone can
hope for is to be surrounded by people who love them.
As the court hearings begin for Diane Parker, I don’t
feel any anger towards her. She is a sick woman and instead
of anger, I feel sorrow. The same sorrow I feel for Paul and
his family. And every day that I see his empty house across
from my own, I hope it will be a reminder to me of just how
quick and unexpectedly we can be taken out of this world.
I hope it will help me to appreciate every single moment of
every day. And after that, I hope this story will help you do
the same.
A deadly neighborhood-drama in Palm Bay:
The house where Paul Cadigan lived, and the
house of Diane Parker where the gruesome
murder took place.

B
ob Marley and the Wailers have sold
more than 250 million albums over
the past 40 years, and it has been his band
that has helped create this international
success. Now many of Marley’s legendary
musicians, together with other renowned
reggae sessionmen, have reformed under
the title of The Original Wailers.
Keyboard player Earl “Wya” Lindo first
joined the Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny
Wailer in 1973, at the time when the Wailers’
debut album for Island Records, Catch A Fire,
was first released. “Wya” has played on classic
records by Bob, Peter and Bunny, as well as the
Abyssinians, Dennis Brown and bluesman Taj
Mahal.
American born guitarist Al Anderson
joined the Wailers a year later, just prior to Natty Dread becoming Bob Marley and the Wailers’ breakthrough album in the US. It was Al’s
playing on hits like “No Woman No Cry” that
first alerted rock fans to the Wailers’ music, and
lent Marley’s songs their international appeal
during his career. He’s played with Peter Tosh,
James Brown, Traffic, Ben Harper and Lauryn
Hill.
Bob Marley enrolled singer/guitarist Junior
Marvin in the Wailers during sessions for the
Exodus and Kaya albums, shortly before the
band’s legendary appearance at London’s Rainbow Theatre in 1977. Junior has also played
with Ike & Tina Turner, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, Toots & the Maytals, and recently
with OAR.
Junior, Al and Wya toured and recorded
with Marley until his death in 1981. The reformed Original Wailers, with Junior handling
all lead vocals, promise to recreate musical history as they continue to spread the message of
“One Love.”

Concert Review: HOOBASTANK
minous weather conditions hovered over the Space Coast throughout the day on February 2. Constant showers and power outages
threatened to put a damper on the festivities scheduled that night at Captain Hiram’s outdoor Sand Bar in Sebastian. However, by early evening,
the rain subsided, the clouds cleared and by 8:45 The Dukes of Hazard intro tape was rolling and Southern California’s favorite sons, Hoobastank
were taking the stage in front of several hundred enthusiastic fans.
“Don’t you guys feel like you’re watching us play at someone’s
house party?” asked Doug Robb, the band’s charismatic frontman just
before knocking out their current hit “I Don’t Think I love You.” And it
was that personable connection between band and audience that carried
through their entire set.
Guitarist Dan Estrin drew coos and oohs from the throngs of sympathetic young female fans as Robb described in great detail Estrin’s back
injury incurred at the previous night’s show.
The high-energy 60+ minute affair featured tunes from their latest
record For(n)ever like “My Turn” and “All About You” as well as their
signature 2004 hit “The Reason” and the mighty show-ending “Crawling
in the Dark.” They even paused at one point to take requests from the
crowd, leading to an impromptu 80s medley including Men At Work’s
“Down Under” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”
In short, Captain Hiram’s proved to be a fabulous venue and questionable weather conditions, power outages - not even physical injuries
could keep Hoobastank from delivering an amazing show. (myspace.

I
The Interview
walked into the waiting room with a confident air. I
knew I could get this job if I just followed what the
article said on the internet: Be cordial yet confident, and
be yourself. OK, I thought, I can do that. At first glance,
I was a little apprehensive as it seemed I was a tad underdressed. The guy next to me had on a Gabardine suit.
You think they would take notice that I was wearing my
Sunday flip-flops instead of my everyday ones? Oh, well,
at least they matched my swim trunks (I was on my way
to the beach). Everybody had brief cases and fancy pens
and a somber look in their eye.
“Mr. Van Riper”, I heard a secretarial type voice announce. It took a few minutes to understand that she was
calling MY name as I’m definitely not used to being called
“Mr.” anything! I realized she was waiting for me. “Yo!”,
I replied. She led me to the back office.
I sat in a big leather chair for a while waiting for the
interviewer. I looked at all the diplomas on the wall, the
solid mahogany desk in front of me, the “signed” artist
prints on the other wall. My mind began to wander and I
started pondering things like: why is it that women are so
much better than men when it comes to anything having
to do with Saran wrap. You know, my wife can tear off a
piece and have the container covered in one motion! It’s
on there so tight you could play the drum solo to “WipeOut” on it. So I took two pencils out of the solid pewter
pencil holder and started playing “Wipe Out” on the desk.
That’s when Helen walked in the room.
“MAY I HELP YOU?”, she queried in a voice loud
enough to drowned out my pencil-percussion. “Uh….Oh,
I’m sorry. I was just getting a little bored and was thinking……” Things didn’t start off exactly as I planned.
“I’d like to apply for a job.”, I said very confidently.
“Well, Mr. …” she picked up my application form …
“Van Riper, you really don’t seem to be qualified.”
“Are you judging me already?!”, I asked indignantly.
“OK, ok, where did you get your degree?”
“What do you mean??”
“Where did you study?” She seemed a little annoyed for
some reason.
“OH! I learned everything on the internet or as George
Bush would say the internets.” I thought a little humor
might break the ice.
26 - Brevard Live March 2009
“Oh, then you got your degree on the internet?” She
seemed a little more up beat.
“No, I just like to read a lot.” Helen thought I was being
flippant. I explained, “See, you can learn ANYTHING
on the internet, and you know it has to be true because
it’s on the friggin’ internet! As far as a degree goes,
that’s just some one else’s judgment of what they think
my knowledge is. Who are they to judge me? Is that really a fair assessment of my expertise? You look like an
intelligent woman. Go on…ask me a question. I’ll bet
you I can answer it. You be the judge of my knowledge.”
Helen wasn’t looking well.
I tried to say something smart-sounding. “You know,
Helen, it appears as if you have a perforated pre frontal
lobe problem.” (Wasn’t that impressive? Huh? Very, uh..
medical sounding!)
“Yes, I have a very bad headache right now, Mr. Van Riper. Look, I’ve read your application and I really don’t
think we can help you”.
“Why not?”, I whined.
“Firstly, there isn’t a position called ‘President of Brain
Surgery’ at this hospital, and secondly, you have absolutely no education or experience in the medical profession!”
“What about all those hours studying brain surgery on
the internet? And I’m just looking for something part
time until I can find a job playing guitar. So that would
save you money, see. You would only have to pay me
brain surgeon wages part time!” I thought, this is another
classic case of ‘you can’t get a job without experience,
but you can’t get experience without a job’.
“I think you better leave now, Mr. Van Riper”. Helen was
getting mad.
“I bet you’re really good with Saran wrap!” I was trying
to be nice. The pewter was flying!
SO! What did we learn today, boys and girls? It’s
this: If you’re going to apply for a job in the medical
profession, don’t touch the pencils!

The Wrestler
Starring: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei & Evan Rachel Wood
Rated: R
Running Time: 105 Minutes
y the time you read this article Rourke may well have
won the Best Actor Oscar, and Tomei the Supporting Actress Oscar. This is the story of Randy “The Ram”
Robinson, a broken down Hulk Hogan-type rassler who
is wrestling with his inner demons and bodily injuries.
He struggles in and out of the squared circle. Roarke
gives an emotional and powerful pile-driving portrayal
of a man still clinging to his past glory days. He longingly wants a shot at total redemption. Back in the day
he was a golden god warrior champion of the party-like80’s. Now his body is a wreck, pumped up on steroids and
painkillers, with shattered bones and a face that has been
damaged so often that it looks like Play-Dough. Director
Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain)
gives the former 80’s heartthrob actor room in which to
shine and strut. After all, the story does parallel Rourke’s
acting / boxing career. The Ram tries to reconcile with
his daughter Stephanie (Wood) but old habits die hard.
Oscar winner Marisa Tomei plays Cassidy, “The Ram’s”
stripper friend. Her performance is edgy and full of naked emotion. He is unable to close the deal with either
female. The long haired freak of nature just doesn’t cope
well with the outside world. The Wrestler is an alarming, disturbing and realistic glance into the seedier side
of wrestling. Rourke gives the performance of his lifetime!!!!!!!!!
A
PS / bonus - Tomei should win an Oscar for best pole
dancing. On a serious final note, fans of The Wrestler
should run, not walk to the video store and rent Beyond
the Mat, a 90’s documentary that focused on the trials and
tribulations of ex-WWF star Jake “The Snake” Roberts.

were hosted by the jet-setting David Frost (Sheen). Frost

T

in particular, delivers the goods splendidly. His performance has earned him an Oscar nod and it received great
direction from Ron Howard, the Oscar winning director
of Beautiful Mind. Back to the flick, Tricky Dick, the
only U.S. President to resign, was a complicated and
lonely man with a badly tarnished image who craved
public forgiveness after the scandalous Watergate affair that ultimately forced him to quit. Frost was headed
downhill when he discovered millions of TV watchers
viewed Nixon’s departure from Washington DC. He and
his associates devised a plan to interview the ex-prez in
four different syndicated interviews for which Nixon was
to be compensated the unheard of amount of $600,000.
Frost’s intention was to extract from Nixon an apology for the horrendous and reprehensible mistakes that
the President admittedly made. The movie is dialogged
heavy, with a towering performance by Langella and a
bonus history lesson to boot. Director Howard shows
that Nixon wasn’t just tricky, but tragic as well. B

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN MELBOURNE
A Streetcar
Named Desire
T
he Henegar Center
for the Arts in historic
downtown Melbourne features A Streetcar Named
Desire, Tennessee Williams
inspired dramatic masterpiece. The show will run
thru March 15th, 2009. Friday & Saturday evenings at
8 pm and Sunday matinees
at 2 pm.
The play reveals to
the very depths, the character of Blanche, a faded and
fragile southern belle whose
life has been undermined
by her romantic illusions
that lead her to reject the
38 - Brevard Live March 2009
realities of life, which she
consistently ignores. The
pressure brought to bear
upon her by her sister Stella,
with whom she goes to live
in New Orleans, intensified
by the earthy and aggressive young husband Stanley,
leads to a revelation of her
tragic self-delusion. As jazz
from the local bars blare
through the night, tensions
rise to an inevitable breaking point.
Reserved tickets may be
purchased at the Henegar
Center Box Office Monday
through Friday during regular business hours. Tickets
may be purchased by phone
by calling (321) 723-8698,
or at www.henegar.org.

Dave Vickers
1/13/1951 – 2/7/2009
Dave Vickers has been a well
known and respected musician since the early 1970’s.
Playing bass guitar and singing in some of the most popular bands in the area, he’s
been a Brevard County icon
for over three decades. Austin Pettit, bandmate, friend
and a music-legend himself,
remembers his friend:
H
ow do you define a best friend? Can you have more
than one? I think Dave could.
When he liked you, Dave took you in with open arms.
He could make you feel pretty special. If you did him
wrong, that’s another story. When Dave joined our band in
the 70’s, he was already a pro and I was a rookie. It worried
me. He could be a pretty imposing guy. Dave took me in
and taught me a lot about music. When we found out we
both had a love for fishing, we became instant buddies.
We had so much fun in our band. Wherever we went, we
took our fishing gear and were bound and determined we
were going to find a place to fish. We usually did. Playing
music, fishing and getting paid. What could be better than
that?
Dave and I were in several more bands together and have
remained friends ever since. We’ve shared many of life’s
trials and tribulations with each other. We would confide in
each other and if one of us had a problem the other would
be there.
I loved Dave’s confidence. I don’t think I ever saw him
unsure of himself, at work or play. I was always the cautious
one. When we lived together and were broke, I’d want to
pool our money together and go buy enough cheap food to
last for awhile. Dave would say “let’s get lobsters.”
Dave’s a funny guy. One night we were fishing in the port
in my little boat. It was freezing and we weren’t catching
any fish so we decided to dock at Rusty’s for some oysters
and quite a few beers. I got back in the boat first. When
Dave stepped in, I flew into the water and came up under
the boat in total darkness. Dave pulled me out by my coat
collar and I was soaked, frozen and humiliated. Dave said,
“Sorry Man”…. “So you want to stop and try one more
spot before we go home?”
I always admired how smart Dave was. I would constantly call, asking him how to do stuff or how to cook
something. I admired how he started his own drafting company and made it a success. He gave me a job even though
I knew nothing about it. He taught me.
When I got married to Tina, Dave took her into his life
too. At our wedding he didn’t want to be my best man he
wanted to be our limo driver. He’s the godfather to my kids
and they truly love their Uncle Dave and Aunt Linda.
Speaking of Linda I can’t think of a better person for
Dave and we always thought they were the definition of the
perfect couple. She made his life complete. Going to Dave
and Linda’s for dinner was like going on vacation. They
went all out. We always had a great time and we’ve always
said, we’d rather eat Dave’s cooking at his house than go to
any restaurant. Dave lived a great life and always included
his friends and family in on it.
He’s in good company now: Dave Fiester, Lenny Maddock, Bill Ball, Steven Miller and Dave Vickers! For those
of you that know: That’s one heck of a band there.
I’ve been kicking myself now, for not seeing Dave
enough lately. He would remind me of that too. His last
message on my answering machine went something like
this: “Austin, it’s me, Dave, you remember, Dave Vickers,
big guy with curly hair. Give me a call”.
Please understand I’m not trying to claim Dave for myself. He’s too big for just one person. Dave had room in his
heart for lots of people. I have a lot of great friends too, and
have lost too many. But if you asked me, I’d have to say,
“Dave Vickers was the best friend I ever had”.

Art Harris & The Z-Tones will be performing this
month at Mr. Tony’s.
New Music Venu In Palm Bay
Mo’ Better Blues At Mr. Tony’s
M
r Tony has a pretty clear vision of what
he wants to offer his customers: “First
we had to set up the restaurant and bar because
we want to serve very good food - the best pizza in town”, he said. Then he built a good size
stage, and now Mr. Tony wants to serve live
music as well. And just like it is with the food,
he wants “the best in town”.
There’s an all star Blues Jam on Tuesdays
hosted by The Space Coast Playboys. Fridays and
Saturdays you’ll see either the Steve Thorpe Band,
The Space Coast Playboys or Art Harris & The ZTones. All top notch blues bands that perform all
around the state and beyond.
Art Harris & The Z-Tones are making their debut at Mr. Tony’s this month on March 20th and
21st. The blues quintet, armed with guitar, sax, upright bass and drums, offers a unique, soulful sound
that can swing and jump just as hard as it can shuffle and groove. The group plays a variety of blues
styles including West Coast jump, Chicago shuffle,
Mississippi delta soul, Louisiana groove, and Texas
swing.
And while Mr. Tony’s wants to be known as
Palm Bay’s top blues venu, it also offers some good
old bluegrass music with The Penny Creek Band
every Wednesday. There’s karaoke on Fridays before the live bands go on.
Mr. Tony’s is located at 1549 Palm Bay Road,
behind Applebbe’s. For more information call 321409-4595.

Hey Brevard Live!
I’m a frequent reader of
your magazine and felt the need
to inform you of a band based
right here in Brevard that you
have probably never heard of.
Brother Bean (www.brotherbean.com) is a psychedelic rock
band that has been playing in
and around the area for almost
4 years now. They are a three
piece band with a huge sound!
The band was born out of late
night jam sessions in Grant and
since then they have played
venues all over the southeast,
from Miami to North Carolina.
Most recently they kicked
off the Bear Creek music festival, in Live Oak Florida, to a
packed house of 300 live music
fanatics. This festival featured
Dereck Trucks, John Fishman of Phish, Michael Kang
of String Cheese Incident, and
many other national touring artists.
A Brother Bean show is
unlike any other local act, in regards to the size of their sound
and on stage production. This
local-band-that-could boasts a
certain musicianship and sound
that immediately captures the
attention of its audience. Every
show is highlighted by intricate twists and turns, varying
set lists from show to show,
and creative covers that always
keep the crowds coming back
for more.
They have a state of the
art, intelligent light show controlled by a dedicated Lighting
Director takes the show to new
levels. Their shows approach
the production levels of top tier
live acts, for a small fraction
of the price. The visual aspect
coupled with the bands driving
trance rock sounds, has lifted
audiences to limitless heights
often expressed through uncontrollable cheers and uncommonly focused dancing.
Over the past 4 years the
band has worked to build a
large, tight nit, community of
fans. This network of fans follows the band to every show,
keeping each venue packed and
full of energy. Their website
even features an active forum
in which fans can arrange ride
shares to shows, download free
music, talk about the band, current events, or whatever is on
your mind!
Being the #1 Entertainment
magazine in Brevard, I figured
its time that the area heard
about Brother Bean. They are
a great bunch of guys, with a
wonderful giving community
surrounding them. I have never
felt this way about a local act,
I feel truly blessed that I stumbled upon them the way I did. I
just wanted to give this opportunity to anyone else that may
be interested!

going to send me audio excerpts of
your soul and let me pick it apart. I
could try and make you believe I’m the
right man for the job by giving you a
list of achievements and awards, but
in the end my only real qualification
is that I love music. I love it in every
form it exists.
So send me your CDs Florida! Send
me your gleaming, polished studio produced masters! Send me your garage
recorded demos! Send it all - I await
with enthusiasm! However, I offer you
a warning and a promise. Don’t send
me anything unless you want me to be
honest. No puff press here. If I’m not
honest, then no one will believe me
when I say your CD is life changing
and people need to hear it. Let’s get
started!

Hatchet and long time local and international guitar hero Paul Chapman.
As soon as I hit play I can tell the
sound quality isn’t going to be amazing, but it’s a live recorded concert and
I love live recordings so it’s not an issue at all. I love hearing the energy of
a live crowd and hearing a band react
and vibe off of it. It’s just not something you reproduce in a studio. This
album is southern, swamp rock straight
up. A lot of shuffle beats and blues
style turnarounds. Screaming solos and
growling vocals about women, drinking and fishing. Chapman cuts in hard
with a slew of easily identified influences. I can hear him switch between
Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray and Vai
all in the same song…I love it. Most
of the CD is original, but they throw a
few covers in for kicks. Number 11’s
“Long Tall Sally” is a highlight and I
don’t even like that song. Big ups to
Bruce Crump, some of the tightest
drums I’ve heard in awhile.
It’s fun listen and my dog Baxter
seemed to dig it too…so it must be
good! His favorite cuts are “Bloody
Reunion” and “Oh, Atlanta”. My pick
is the self titled “Gator Country”. Grab
a cold one, throw in this CD and admire
the mud on the side of your truck…this
is Gator Country!

T
Sybil Gage: Red
he band is sparse and heavy on
keys, but the recording quality is
super clean and silky. This is definitely
easy listening jazz over all, but I’m
hearing more than that woven in. I like
Sybil’s voice a lot! It’s very smooth and
honest, and even though her lyrics can
get a bit ADD at times, her rhythm and
swagger are perfect and I couldn’t stop
listening. “Changing My Scene” is
both the opener to the album and my
favorite track. The song-writing is of
such a professional, polished quality and it’s so catchy I found my self
singing along by the second listen. The
next few songs are very reminiscent of
70’s and 80’s pop soul writing…Hall
and Oates, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder…
etc.. It’s all very cool. The title track
“Red” is a solid ballad and very reminiscent of one or two songs I’ve heard
before but can’t quite place. It rings a
very natural familiarity. All the way
through track 10 Sybil is on course and
her Erykah Badu-esque style is flying
high and taking me along with it. The
over all vibe I get from this CD is not
unlike the feeling I might get from a
glass of “red” and a comfy chair. Her
cover of W.C Handy’s St. Louis Blues
is also a nice surprise. Baxter says it
like being scratched behind the ears for
45 minutes straight. It’s a winner check
it out!

M
y newest favorite spot is on the golf
course. And I don’t even know how to
swing a golf club, and in my world a birdie
has two wings. But the 18th hole at the Turtle Creek Golf Club in Rockledge harbors
a treasure - Jimmy’s Restaurant and Tavern.
That doesn’t sound too fancy, does it? And it
really isn’t. But the brilliance is in the detail.
Jimmie’s is more than a restaurant, it’s a true family tradition which is now in the fourth generation. Jimmie Mascolo and his wife Peggy, relocated from New
Jersey and opened Jimmie’s Restaurant on Route One in
Rockledge in April 1984. Soon it became known for good
home-cooking, exceptional breakfast, very reasonable
prices and attracted customers all over the county.
After 22 years on US 1. Jimmie’s relocated once
again, this time to a beautiful tranquil surrounding, at the
18th hole at Turtle Creek. The rustic dining room features
surrounding windows overlooking old Florida landscape
with a lake and old trees - and every once in the while a
golf cart comes rolling by. Two large outside decks, one
for smokers, the other one for non-smokers, put you right
into the golf course.
The tavern wall is a museum filled with memorabilia
and telling the story about Jimmie Mascolo being a true
baseball fan. Baseball fans, this might be a paradise for
you! For the rest of you, it looks really impressive.
Since baseball and golf don’t rank high in my interest, let me tell you why Jimmie’s belongs to my favorite
restaurants: The Food! It’s really, really good, tasty, fresh,
plentiful. And the prices will surprise you. Most items are
under $10.

Happy
St. Patrick’s

Historic Downtown Melbourne

My “fussy” friend ordered a prime-rib sandwich and I
wanted to make it extra hard and ordered crabmeat stuffed
flounder and Brussel sprouts. My “fussy” friend became a
“happy diner” assuring me how tasty and tender it was, and
I was blown away by the meal I ordered. The flounder tasted
mild, no fishiness at all, and the crabmeat was actually crabmeat and not crabmeat mixed breading. The Brussel sprouts
had just the right tenderness without any bitter taste. Bravisso - we were impressed.
We didn’t have room for dessert but if you do, Jimmie’s
has the best home-made pies and cakes by Peggy Mascolo.
There is so much more to say about the menu: The
breakfast specials that start at 5:30 am with country fried
steak, pork chops, corned beef hash, fried catfish, pancakes,
biscuits and gravy and it goes on. You can get a hot roast
beef sandwich or a Hamburger platter for $3.95, and of
course, there are lots of Italian house specialties. But it’s
best, if you go and try it out.
We will be back and I’m sure you’ll be back. I hope I’ll
find a seat next time after everybody has discovered Jimmie’s Restaurant.
M
eg O’Malley’s Irish Restaurant and Pub
has become a landmark in Brevard. Just
last month, in February, we celebrated its 9th
anniversary. This month, it’s the 10th annual
St. Patrick’s Day Street Party.
So how come it’s already their 10th annual St. Patrick’s
Day Street Party that we are celebrating on Saturday, March
14th and 17th (St. Patrick’s Day)? Very simple. Only a month
after opening the doors, the owners of the brand-new Irish
pub arranged for their first annual street party. Since then the
event has been growing every year way beyond the borders
of Brevard County. To all the Irish people in driving distance
and those who love an Irish good time: Meg O’Malley’s is
the place to be to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Wear green and
you’re among friends!
This year’s parade and street party will be held Saturday
March 14th. The parade will begin at noon this year, so be
sure to get there early to get a good seat. There will be lots
of good food and live entertainment from Kindred Spirit,
Wyndbreakers, and the
infamous Greg and Brian
duo. Admission is free, so
it won’t cost you anything
to stop in and peruse the
streets.
Saturday’s party will
be a blast, for sure, but
Meg’s doesn’t stop there.
They will be opening up
early on Tuesday March
17th at 8 am to start the day
off with a traditional Irish
breakfast buffet. Then the
party resumes.

Siggy’s American Bar
St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the only time Meg’s serves
breakfast. Since their re-opening in October they’ve offered a Sunday Brunch menu. The entrees change periodically, and last time I was there they had an impressive
selection. Among the choices were the Irish Toast which
is French toast drizzled in an Irish banana whiskey syrup and served with bacon or bangers, and Meg’s Benedict, which comes with toasted Irish soda bread, rashers,
poached eggs and hollandaise sauce and is served with
griddled potatoes. They also have a great bloody mary
menu which allows you to custom build your wake up
call (or hangover remedy). And don’t forget about their
Irish coffee - it’s sure to put a bounce in your step.
It’s great to have Meg’s back since the fire last in
May 2008. It took five months for remodeling. The entire
electrical system was redone, everything in the kitchen
was replaced and in the bar area leather booths and a new
floor were installed. They also revamped the bathrooms.
And when Meg O’Malley’s re-opened, it was better than
ever. It also features a new patio in the back.
No matter what heritage, go green and have some
luck of the Irish. You’ll have fun. For more information

att Adkins set the mood for one of Siggy’s Acoustic
nights last month when I came in. It was a relaxing atmosphere where friends and regulars trickled through the door.
It was a Thursday night, so I wasn’t expecting mayhem, nor
was I in the mood for it. What I wanted were a couple of drinks,
good music and good company - and I got all 3.
Sometimes a chill night out is a good thing, other times
you want to go out and party (responsibly, of course) with a
band that will keep you out of your seat. At Siggy’s you will
get it all. It’s a “Cheers” kind of place.
Siggy’s has been around for a long time, in fact, they’ll be
celebrating their 19th anniversary this year. You don’t make it
that far without having a reputation for being a place to have
a good time. There’s always something going on at Siggy’s,
whether it is a sports event, like last month’s Daytona 500, a
local birthday celebration or a good band or DJ keeping the
crowd moving. You can catch DJ Chris Long (yes, he still
makes guest appearances), Modern Day Giant, Absolute Blue,
Chain Reaction and other awesome local musicians.
In addition to live music, Siggy’s has something to do every night of the week like their Texas Hold’em Poker tournaments or karaoke. They also offer a selection of pub fare ranging from big sandwiches to snacks, 35¢ wings on Tuesdays.
To see what’s going on at Siggy’s, check our calendar or

iddler’s Green Irish Pub

fare in a relaxed, familyfriendly atmosphere, where
you can enjoy a pint from a
full bar with 23 beers on tap.
Live Irish folk music adds to
jovial mood.
Fiddler’s Green is divided into three separate dinning rooms with plenty of seating for
larger parties and various nooks for a more intimate setting. Knick-knacks, pictures, books, and
musical instruments line the shelves and rafters.
A makeshift stage with a distressed piano stands
in the corner of main dining room.
The menu serves up Irish classics such a
Corned Beef and Cabbage along with a few surprises like the Roast Aylesbury Duck, illustrating
the variety of pub grub. The Shannon Salmon

features a generous salmon fillet, grilled medium rare and
drizzled with a Tarragon white wine sauce. The fish was
flaky, moist and tender and paired well with the crispy,
roasted potatoes.
The Irish Stew, a staple of Irish cuisine, includes a
hearty mix of lamb, carrots, and peas with hints of thyme
and a dollop of creamy mashed potatoes. Fresh rolls are
included, perfect for dipping or cleaning the bowl. Other
standout dishes include Hen in a Pot, a variation of chicken pot pie, and Sheppard’s Pie.
The hearty dishes and generous portions leave little
room for dessert, but if you are capable, try the equally
substantial Bread and Butter Pudding, baked in custard
and served with whiskey caramel sauce. The ultimate
comfort food, just like Mom made.
Fiddler’s features a full-liquor bar with 23 beers on
tap and an ample selection of wines. Live entertainment,
Thursday through Saturday, features traditional Irish
Folk, Blues, and Rock music. A Sunday Brunch is simply
comprised of an Irish breakfast, eggs, bangers, and toast.
Staff was friendly and knowledgeable though service
lagged. Fiddler’s atmosphere draws a collegiate crowd
as well as neighborhood families.

Alice
Ahrends
Alice Ahrens’ artwork takes
you to the beach. She uses
the beautiful colors of the
ocean that make you feel
fresh breezes in your face.
W
ater has always been a big part of Ahrens’ life. Her
love of it and of sailing started when she was young
as did her creativity and her love of art. Although she was
born and grew up in South Bend, Indiana, she spent summers
with her family at Diamond Lake in southwestern, lower
Michigan. There she learned to sail, which has remained a
passion throughout her life.
Her earliest artistic endeavors were prompted by her
parents who bought the children paint-by-number sets,
colored rock sets, macramé materials, and had them make
Christmas and birthday cards rather than buy them. Ahrens
and her sister used to make fairy pies, too. They would
leave them in the backyard, hoping to attract fairies. That
had to be the start of her career as an artist and of the note
of fantasy that is integral to her work.
Her father was always creative. She remembers him busy
in the basement on weekends, making lithographs, model
boats, etc. Also, her mother contributed creatively to the
family. She was a pastel artist.
Ahrens remembers that during her youth, she was
always busy with her hands. Based on the number of
56 - Brevard Live March 2009
paintings she produces, I imagine that she continues that
trait. When Ahrens was in 8th grade, she had her fist taste of
living in Florida and she broadened her interest in different
forms of art. When the family moved to Cocoa Beach for
a year, she attended Roosevelt Junior High School where
the art teacher opened up the world of many media to her,
such as using plaster to sculpt or burning Styrofoam then
creating a piece of art out of it. A year later, they moved
back to South Bend, Indiana.
Ahrens attended Western Michigan University and
earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She
took art classes as electives as often as she could. After
college, she became a substitute teacher. She chose to teach
in art classes whenever possible.
She also took classes in costume design in college.
That’s when she began working with watercolor painting.
In the class, they would work on a play and she’d have to
draw the characters and create the costumes in watercolors.
Back then, she used those small watercolor sets and more
or less taught herself.
Her parents retired to Deerfield, Florida, (near Fort
Florida Art
Lauderdale). Ahrens visited her parents there. After that,
she moved to Deerfield and began to substitute teach in
Boca Raton and Deerfield. It is also where she met her
future husband.
Ahrens said that she took off with watercolor after
she took a course with Martha Ann Meyers. She took
the painting class for three years. Later, she took another
community education course in Delray. When that teacher
moved away, she asked Ahrens to take over the class. She
taught the watercolor class for three years.
During her time in the southeastern part of Florida,
she belonged to the Palm Beach Watercolor Society and
the Boynton Beach Art League. She started selling her
paintings, and she participated in exhibits and shows.
In 2000, her husband took a job in this area and they moved
to Indian Harbor Beach. In 2002, Ahrens started taking
watercolor classes with Therese Ferguson, local awardwinning watercolor artist. Ahrens chose her because she
loved the colors that dominated Ferguson’s paintings.
Ahrens became a member of the Brevard Watercolor
Society and has enjoyed the many art opportunities they
offer. She always participates in the member show (Splash)
and has participated in the BWS mini-workshops. She
enjoys seeing different artists and what they do with their
work.
In 2007, Ahrens entered the poster contest for the 2007
ArtWorks Eau Gallie Fine Art Festival. She won the contest
and as a result her painting was featured on the art show
posters and the art show t-shirts for that year. She also
featured her work in a booth during that year of ArtWorks.
That was the first time she had been in that big art show.
She found it a challenge to paint and frame enough for the
show after she found out that she had won the contest.
Ahrens is involved in many art activities throughout the
area. A friend asked her to paint a mural at the Melbourne
Civic Theater. They wanted it of Long Island Sound for a
specific show. She was equal to the challenge. She set about
researching what she had to do and accomplished it with
acrylics and sponges.
Turtles are a recurring subject in Ahrens’ paintings.
She participated in “An Ocean of Hope,” which was a
community art project to benefit the Children’s Home
Society of Florida. Each artist was given the task of
painting a large 3-D turtle based on a theme. Ahrens chose
the theme of Captain Jack. Her turtle epitomized the pirate
and was complete with a treasure trove of jewels.
Brevard Live March 2009 - 57
Florida Art
Following that project, it
was a logical leap for her to
participate in the Astronaut
Scholarship
Foundation’s
Shuttles Orbiting the Space
Coast program. Ahrens applied
to decorate two of the eightfoot fiberglass shuttles and
was accepted for both: Zebra
Go Fast and Dolphin Dream.
Both are beautiful.
Ahrens has recently begun
chalking with the Florida
Chalk Artists Association.
She participated in the street
paintings this past November
at the ArtWorks Festival.
This was not her first street
painting endeavor. When she
lived in Boynton Beach, she
participated in the Lake Worth street painting festival and
created copies of Matisse, Monet and Picasso on the streets.
Ahrens will be chalking with the Florida Chalk Artists
Association at the arts festival In Hyde Park in Tampa. The
festival runs from March 19 to 21.
Another recent project is her foray into mixed media
with her recent robot in the Robot Love exhibit, cosponsored by 321 agency and the Brevard Art Museum.
Also, she made posters for 2007, 2008 and 2009 for
“An Evening of Coffee and Chocolate” for the Brevard
Achievement Center. Proceeds from that event went
to provide programs and services for persons with
disabilities.
Boating is still a big thing in her life. She races sailboats
competitively. Her love of that and her love for her painting
combine beautifully. As a result of these loves, she uses water
scenes and colors to create vibrant, beautiful paintings.
You can see Ahrens’ work at the Old Eau Gallie Walkin Clinic on Highland Avenue, on the Brevard Watercolor
Society website, and at Art n’ Soul Studio and Gallery at
425 5th Avenue in Indialantic. Also, occasionally she teaches
two or three students at a time.

I Need A Break
By Joey Simao
This month I decided to give the political side of my
brain a rest. Anytime, I can give any part of my brain a
chance to quiet down, is a good thing for me and every one
around me. I know there are many of you that count on me
to both entertain and inform you politically but this month
you are just going to have to form your own opinions. I am
sure you will be just fine.
To my little secret admirer that keeps ripping out my
articles and writing love notes to me on it and then taping it
to the office door at Brevard Live each month please don’t
stop. I am very intrigued and somewhat excited to find out
who you are. The women in the office think you are man
leaving me these notes and perhaps you have a “man crush”
on me. If that is the case, I must say that I am flattered but
I am strictly heterosexual. Not that there is anything wrong
with you being gay, if you are, but I certainly am not. I am
so straight that when it was time for me to have my prostate
exam done, I made certain it was a female doctor who violated me in that way. We are now dating and are very happy
together.
I, on the other hand, think it’s a woman that is leaving
me the messages. I believe that my articles anger her to
the point where it turns her on and the only thing she can
do is to tear the page out of the magazine as though it was
my shirt she was stripping off me exposing my bare chest.
She then uses the pen to write the words on the page while
fantasizing that it is her fingers exploring every inch of my
body.
While she drives to Brevard Live Magazine to adhere
her love message to the door her thoughts are so intense that
she sees nothing through her windshield other than her lips
against mine and her hands running through the sporadic
groups of hair that still cling to my scalp...
Whoa, I better stop right there. See what happens? I
get so involved in what I write I sometimes forget that I am
writing for the best entertainment magazine in Florida and
I certainly would never do anything to tarnish that reputation. I guess I should not read the Penthouse forum articles
prior to writing for Brevard Live.
Speaking of stimulation‚ LOL. Why not stimulate the
economy here in Brevard. I have noticed that many of the
fine dining establishments that advertise in the magazine
are passing on incredible deals to help their customers during these so called trying times. Don’t let a little bad news
from the media stop you from having fun and supporting
your local watering hole and favorite restaurant.
