PARADISE ISLAND/ Park 1 UPDATE
Pat Walker, Association Secretary
____________________________________________________________________
I
t’s the merry, merry month of May……sun
is shining; flowers are blooming, birds are
singing, snowbirds are gone. Activities are
gearing down to the slower summer pace, the
only thing gearing up is pool time….dive in!
Whoops, I forgot – no diving allowed. Potluck
dinners will morph into cookouts, bingo is now
a once a month event, Tiki Night
will actually be on Tiki Island until the heat
drives us into the clubhouse; shuffle will continue until even the early morning heat becomes
unbearable; and pool parties will become the new vogue.
About the only ongoing normal event is Hobby Club. The ladies will be working
away creating unique items for themselves and for the November Arts & Crafts Sale.
Speaking of the Hobby Club, the members hosted their annual baby shower for the
Bay Area Pregnancy Center which supports pregnant women and girls in crisis or abusive
situations. In addition to the many beautiful hand made or purchased baby items they
personally donated, on behalf of the Paradise Island Association they purchased $100
worth of diapers for the organization using assets donated to the club from the Community Sale revenue.
SPECIAL NOTICE: The Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 4, therefore, we will
conduct the monthly Association Meeting as scheduled, then in the late afternoon, all
three parks have been invited to attend the annual Derby Party hosted by Park #2. The
Association officers voted to cancel our May Potluck dinner to allow everyone to attend
this fun event. The Burger Bash planned as the May Potluck has been rescheduled as the
Memorial Day celebration. Wait, there’s more….in lieu of a May Potluck dinner, we have
opted for a special event on Saturday, May 11 to honor the mothers in Park #1. Details
will be posted on the bulletin board.

Needless to say, BOGO Bingo Night was a hit. We
distributed well over $100 in game prizes plus ten special
$5 drawings. Plan on an encore presentation in late fall. Oh,
by the way I did not win even one thin dime…..how fair
was that! If the weather held, we had a grand Re-Opening
Celebration for Tiki Island. It’s been a long time coming,
but the island looks great. Not only did the contractors do
a commendable job, but Ron, Mike, Bob and Heidi all had
a hand in spiffying up the island, cleaning the grill and
posting grill lighting instructions. We planned a special Tiki
Nite with hot dogs on the grill and all the extra condiments to test it out. As a
reminder, when you use the Tiki grill for a personal event, please remember to
clean it when you are finished so it is ready for the next user.
We extend our deepest condolences to Nadine and Bob Nash on the passing
of Nadine’s brother.
CORPORATE HOA UPDATE
The Corporate HOA Board of Directors held a very congenial meeting with Park
Manager Dennis Morden and ELS Regional Operations Manager Sara Whittington to discuss areas of concern raised by park membership. The meeting resulted in Ms. Whittington
recording a “wish list” of improvements for Lake Haven which she will incorporate into
the 2014 capital improvement budget forwarded to Chicago for final approval. Because
a preponderance of the Tiki Island seawall improvement costs rolled over into the 2013
ELS budget, some Lake Haven improvements scheduled for this year will of necessity
be postponed to 2014.
In both the recent annual HOA and the HOA/ELS meetings, an inordinate amount of
time was spent on complaints resulting from a few pet owners not following established
rules.
While 95+% of pet owners are considerate and routinely pick up and properly dispose of animal waste, unfortunately the few who do not create an unfavorable image of
all pet owners. Even though it has been stated many times, we urge you to carry plastic
bags every time you take your pet for a walk. Additionally, pets must be on a leash, and
barking must be controlled. Thanks for your indulgence and cooperation; both the HOA
and your neighbors appreciate your adherence with all park rules.

In the middle of the night, items seem to materialize in front of the dumpster area
in Park #1. Are they being dropped from UFO’s ? Are we being trashed by alien forces?
Does anyone know where these badly soiled, broken down, objectionable items
come from???? Please adhere with the sign posted in plain sight – that is, when it is not
covered up by an abandoned mattress. It reads “No Unauthorized Dumping”. This sign
was posted by ELS management and applies to everyone in Lake Haven. Each time ELS
is forced to have these abandoned items removed by the City of Dunedin they incur a
special charge……and I don’t have to tell you that these extra charges are ultimately
passed on to each and every one of us as a part of rent increases. If it is your trash, you
are responsible for paying to have it removed from your unit; please don’t put this cost
burden on your neighbors. We have a lovely, friendly community; we all need to do our
part in maintaining it.
Can Playing Superman
Lead To Better Behavior?
___________________________________________________
S
uperheroes in comic books and movies are generally honest, virtuous, and helpful. Playing a superhero in a game
may help people develop the same positive tendencies,
according to a story on the LiveScience website.
Scientists at Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab carried out an experiment in which 60 volunteers
were assigned one of two roles in a virtual reality scenario:
They rode in a helicopter, or they could fly like Superman. They
were then assigned one of two tasks—to tour a virtual city or find
a missing child.
After the tasks were finished, researchers observed that participants who had been given superpowers were more helpful than
those in the virtual helicopter—helping colleagues pick up pens
spilled over the floor, for example. The scientists theorize that
being asked to act like superheroes in games might prompt
people to behave with more kindness in real life.
“As console gaming devices increasingly bring elements of virtual reality into
people’s homes, such experiences may have a significant effect on real-world behavior
and the potential to do good,” the lead researcher told the LiveScience website.

Endangered Eating
___________________________________________________
A
hiker was brought before a judge and charged with killing
a condor on the Endangered Species list. When he pleaded
guilty, the judge asked for an explanation.
“Your Honor, I was hiking in the mountains and
I got lost,” the hiker said. “I wandered around for
days, and I ran out of food. I was starving, so when I
spotted the condor swooping down on a rabbit I ran
as fast as I could and caught it before it could fly
away. I built a fire and cooked it, and just when I
finished eating it, the rangers found me. I would
have died if I hadn’t eaten that bird, Your Honor.”
He seemed sincere, so the judge gave him a
fine and set him free. As he turned to go, the judge
asked, “Just out of curiosity, how did the condor
taste?”
“Not bad,” the hiker replied. “Sort of a cross between a bald eagle and a spotted
owl.”

LAKE HAVEN TREASURE COVE HAPPENINGS
Written by an Anonymous Ghost Writer for Bob Scott,
President, Park 2 Association
____________________________________________________________________
I
n the U.S. month of May is ... National Salad Month, National Egg Month, National
Barbecue Month, National Hamburger Month, and Fungal Infection Awareness Month
and there are two special days this month.
The second Sunday in May each year is designated "Mother's Day" and is a day set
aside to remember or honor our mothers. Although the early Greeks and Romans celebrated mothers and motherhood with festivals, Mother's Day as we know it today was
an American invention first celebrated in 1908 with the giving of a gift, a card or some
other remembrance on this day. In 1912 the phrase "Mother's Day" was trademarked with
a singular, and not a plural, possessive so that each of us would honor our own mother
and not all the mothers in the world. Still, I want to say "Happy Mother's Day" to all the
ladies in our three parks who have or had children. God bless you each and every one.
The last Monday in May is designated "Memorial Day". It began after the American Civil War to honor those Union and Confederate soldiers who died in that struggle.
Now we honor all American
servicemen who have died in
all wars in which we've been
engaged. Please fly your flag
on May 27 and remember
those who have died to keep
us free and safe.
And May is also known
for the Mayday Maypole
Dance. This ghost writer's
turn was in 1942.
Last month's association meeting was our last until next fall. If something comes
up through the summer that needs to be discussed we'll do so at the next monthly dinner.

If you missed the annual ELS luncheon in Clubhouse 2 on March 20th for
all Lake Haven residents you missed some
good food and an enjoyable time with
your neighbors. The meal was Italian
and was catered by Julian's Little Italy in
the Patricia Avenue shopping center. The
fare was "delizioso"! I say again "Grazie
a Dennis e grazie a Bobbie" and thank you
ELS for another great community-wide
luncheon. I hope everyone enjoyed it.

The swimming pools will soon be warm enough to use if they aren't all ready. Frequently swimmers come in the park who are not
Lake Haven residents. If you see others using our
pools who you do not think live here, please ask
them for identification and establish where they
live or who in the park they are visiting. If they
refuse to do so or are not bonafide pool users, ask
them to leave. If they refuse to do that, call the
Sheriff's Dunedin office or let Dennis or Bobbie
know in the park office.
Also, if you are using the pool and open up a
table umbrellas, please remember to close the umbrella before you leave the pool. If the umbrellas
are left open a strong wind can tear them up and
there is a cost to replace them.
Welcome to new residents in our park, Gary
and Connie Haug, Lot 265. They moved in in
March and we hope to see them at our monthly
potluck dinners and cookouts.
And a reminder ... Florida's annual hurricane season officially begins on June 1. But
Mother Nature has been known to create storms and hurricanes in May. All residents are
also reminded our coaches and manufactured homes are not safe in a hurricane and our
clubhouses are not built to be shelters so make your hurricane plans now and be alert to
any evacuation notices that may be called by the Pinellas County Emergency Operations
Center.
It gets kind of quiet here during the summer without our winter residents. I hope
more of our permanent residents will "break bread" with us at our monthly potluck dinners
on the first Sunday of the month and at our cookouts on the third Sunday each month.
In closing, a couple of reminders .... all residents are reminded that the speed limit
anywhere in our park is 15 mph and that the stop signs are where they are for a reason.
Please observe them. Finally, motorcycle owners are asked not to rev their motors when
traveling through the park especially after bedtime.

PARK 3 COMMUNITY
ASSOCIATE REPORT
David Kent, President
____________________________________________________________________
A
pril has come and gone.
For the most part all the
snowbirds, like Sharon
and me, have gone. Sharon and I drove up to Jacksonville for a weekend in April and the
traffic was sooooo heavy. All the license plates were nothern States and Canada.
The new shed is starting to receive items for the white elephant sale. We appreciate
it when you think of us for your gently worn clothing and other household items. Please
put any furniture items in the clubhouse. We don't have room for furniture in the shed.
Over the summer you can get in touch with Evelyn Stellman at 435 or Jean Ambrose at
410 if you have any items for the sale. If there are still empty totes, please place your
items in them instead of cardboard. There is a box of drier sheets in the shed. Just add
a sheet to your container to help keep out any "critters".
This has been a year with lots of participation from so many of the Park 3 residents.
The BBQs, potluck dinners and other events have been great successes all year and the
final dinner was a wonderful end to the season. I look forward to the next season and
hope to see you all healthy and happy in the Fall.
At our April meeting Tim Biggs became our new vice president. He will be a great
addition to our executive team. Sharon has done a great job as VP in the last year but for
personal reasons she stepped down. Don't think she won't still be involved. You know
what they say about the woman behind the man! She will keep me on my toes. Evelyn
Steelman and Jean Longtin have stepped down from their roles on the entertainment
committee. It is invaluable for people to provide continuity when someone else takes on
a task such as the entertainment committee and they have done an excellent job working
with Glo. THANKS ladies!
Over the summer months I look forward to hearing items of interest that will help
me make these reports interesting. There is a contact page that you can send me the latest
news on. I will try to keep up the web page at http://greatguanakey.weebly.com/index.
html. I am going to add a President's Message page on the site to help people stay in
touch over the summer. Come to the site monthly to keep up.

Protect Yourself and Others
By Washing Your Hands
______________________________
P
ublic areas can be an incubator
for disease and infection. Pack
a lot of people into a small area,
and germs and bacteria can spread like
wildfire at any time of year.
No one wants to lose time to an illness, or let others
down by staying home sick. Wearing a Hazmat suit isn’t
very practical, but you can protect yourself and others with a simple precaution: Wash
your hands more often.
Experts recommend washing your hands before and after preparing food, handling
an animal, blowing your nose (or sneezing or coughing), touching garbage, and of course
after using the restroom. A 2010 study of hand-washing habits by the American Society
for Microbiology and the American Cleaning Institute found that 85 percent of people
wash their hands after a visit to the bathroom, up from 77 percent in 2007.
Though 77 percent of respondents to a survey said they always clean their hands
before touching or eating food, only 39 percent reported that they always wash their
hands after coughing or sneezing.
A quick rinse under the faucet isn’t enough, though. To stay healthy and safeguard
your friends’ safety, remember these basic hand-washing tips:
• Use plenty of soap.
• Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to hum the
“Happy Birthday” song twice).
• Wash everywhere, especially under and around your fingernails.
• Dry your hands with an air dryer or a clean, disposable paper towel.
• Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet so you don’t pick up any germs all over
again.
A hand sanitizer provides some protection when a thorough wash isn’t practical,
but it won’t kill every germ. Choose a sanitizer that’s at least 60 percent alcohol, and use
enough to make your hands feel damp for at least 10 seconds after application, giving
it time to eliminate what germs and bacteria it can.
