Dance and Music Productions of the State Theatre Vanemuine season 2011/2012 The Vanemuine is the oldest theatre in Estonia, founded in Tartu in 1870. It was also the first professional theatre in Estonia (1906) and is the only three-genre theatre in the country, staging operas, operettas and musicals, classical ballet and modern dance and drama. The theatre has three different buildings and employs more than 350 people, including a ballet troupe with a highly international cast, and a large symphony orchestra. The theatre often hosts guest soloists. The Vanemuine is a repertory theatre – every season the programme includes more than 40 different productions in a variety of genres. Welcome to the Vanemuine! Vanemuine Theatre is a Member of the International Dance Council CID The State Theatre Vanemuine Vanemuise 6 51003 Tartu, Estonia Ph +372 7 440 100 Fax +372 7 440 116 [email protected] www.vanemuine.ee Disney and Cameron Mackintosh present MARY POPPINS NEW Musical in two acts Based on the book Mary Poppins by P. L. Travers and the Walt Disney movie of the same name (1964) Music by Robert B. Sherman, Richard M. Sherman & George Stiles Lyrics by Robert B. Sherman, Richard M. Sherman & Anthony Drewe Libretto by Julian Fellowes Translation by Leelo Tungal Director Indra Roga (Latvia) Musical Director and Conductor Tarmo Leinatamm Designer Mārtiņš Vilkārsis (Latvia) Costume designer Anna Heinrihsone (Latvia) Lighting Designer Palle Palmé (Sweden) Choreographer Inga Raudinga (Latvia) The East wind brings a new nanny to the Banks family living on Cherry Tree Lane – Mary Poppins, an extremely vain and self-conscious woman with magical skills. The Banks children, Michael and Jane, get into incredible adventures with her. Unfortunately, Mary is to stay only until the wind changes… Most of the music featured in the musical was created for the Sherman Brothers’ movie, but some new songs have been added, written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. On the opening night in London in 2004 Mary was played by Laura Michelle Kelly, who received a Lawrence Olivier Award for her performance. On Broadway the musical was staged in 2006. In with and subtitles Franz Lehár THE MERRY WIDOW NEW (LÕBUS LESK) (DIE LUSTIGE WITWE) Operetta in three acts Musical Director and Conductor Paul Mägi Conductors Endel Nõgene, Lauri Sirp Director Jussi Tapola (Finnish National Opera) Designer Anna Kontek (Finnish National Opera) Choreographer Aita Vuolanto (Finland) The opera is set in Paris. The family of Count Danilo will not allow him to ask for the hand of a simple girl called Hanna in marriage. Hanna then marries a wealthy banker who dies on their wedding night. She becomes a rich widow with no lack of suitors. Danilo, however, no longer dares to approach and admit his love for her, as people might think that he is only after the money. Hanna must take the matter into her own hands… When the libretto was written its subject matter – about a young, self-conscious woman who makes it in a man’s world – was still rather unusual. The premiere was on 30 December 1905 in Vienna, with Mizzi Günther and Louis Treumann in the lead roles. In with subtitles Giuseppe Verdi RIGOLETTO Opera in three acts Musical Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp Conductor Paul Mägi Director Taisto Noor Stage Designer Aime Unt Choreographer Rufina Noor This is a story of blind love, betrayal and revenge. The court jester, Rigoletto, tries vehemently to protect his beloved daughter, Gilda, from the evil world. Unfortunately he does not notice how his own instruments have become inhuman in this fight. Blinded by revenge, he unknowingly sacrifices his own daughter. In with subtitles RIGOLETTO Janno Põldma/Heiki Ernits/Priit Pajusaar COSMONAUT LOTTE NEW (KOSMONAUT LOTTE ) A children’s musical in two acts Lyrics Leelo Tungal Producer Ain Mäeots Musical director and conductor Tarmo Leinatamm Director Lauri Sirp Designer Iir Hermeliin (Tallinn City Theatre) Choreographer Janek Savolainen Lotte wakes up in the morning in her own home, but by that night she finds herself on the moon! But for the ever-active Lotte this is just another exciting adventure – by the end of the day she’s made more new friends and learnt lots of new things. Joining her on her trip to the moon is Adalbert the rabbit – and what he does up there you’ll have to come along and see for yourself! Henry Purcell FAIRY QUEEN (HALDJAKUNINGANNA) Semi-opera in two acts Music Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp Director, Choreographer, Visuals Sasha Pepelyaev (Russia) Costume Designer Liisi Eelmaa “Purcell’s „Fairy Queen“ seems to be a brilliant and enigmatic example of conceptual baroque performance. Originally performed as a part of colossal court show, it carries on its own beauty and secrets. Fantastic, naive and wise characters do not hurry to reveal their goals and means. Decorated by the Purcell’s melodies’ jewellery, they observe Shakespeare’s „A Midsummer Night’s Dream“ and make their own comments and conclusions. We can only guess what all those stories, words and sounds meant 400 years ago. But the desire to stage this opera now immediately demands a whole set of keys for the endless doors of its labyrinths. I went to the area of machinery and absurd mechanics to search for those keys. So here it is: a kinetic conceptual „Fairy Queen“ driving through the forests and palaces of „No fear Shakespeare“. “ Alexander Pepelyaev January 16, 2011 FAIRY QUEEN Gaetano Donizetti MARY STUART NEW (MARIA STUARDA) Opera in two acts Musical Director and Conductor Mihkel Kütson Conductor Lauri Sirp Director Roman Hovenbitzer (Germany) Stage and Costume Designer Roy Spahn (Germany) Light Designer Palle Palmé (Sweden) Queen Elizabeth I loves the Count of Leicester but suspects that he is in love with Mary, Queen of Scotts. The rivalry between the two women in politics and love cannot end happily. The premiere of „Mary Stuart“ took place in La Scala, Milan, in 1835. The opera reached the stages again only 123 years later, but then to stay permanently in the repertoire of opera houses. In with subtitles Giuseppe Verdi THE TROUBADOUR (TRUBADUUR) (IL TROVATORE) Opera in two acts Musical Director and Conductor Paul Mägi Conductor Lauri Sirp Director Carmelo Agnello (France) Stage Designer Liina Keevallik Costume Designer Pascaline Duron (France) Light Designer Marc Delamézière (France) Choreographer Tatjana Järvi (NO Estonia) Poisoning and fratricide, a gypsy camp and a nun’s ordination, jealousy, revengefulness and a stake on one hand, and a drama of ordinary human passions on the other hand – this taken all together is the Troubadour. It is considered quite strange that the romantic maestro, Giuseppe Verdi, took any interest in the dark, cruel and grandiose chivalry drama El Trovadorwhich followed the taste in vogue at the time in France. But as the motive of the plot is love and honour. The opera is about a tragic play of emotions. In with subtitles THE TROUBADOUR Jules Massenet WERTHER NEW Opera in two acts Libretto by Édouard Blau, Paul Milliet & Georges Hartmann, based on Johan Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther) Musical Director and Conductor Paul Mägi Conductor Lauri Sirp Director Albert-Andre Lheureux (Belgium) Designer Liina Keevallik Werther is hopelessly in love with the beautiful Charlotte, who returns his affection. However, because of a promise she made to her dying mother, the girl marries another man and Werther commits suicide. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young Werther published in 1774. The deeply romantic story of a young poet was a sensation and became one of the most read books of the time. The highly popular novel even influenced fashion – young men throughout Europe tried to emulate Werther’s style of clothing. Alas, this success had a less pleasant side to it, as many young men also committed suicide in the same way as Werther. In with subtitles Jule Styne SUGAR Musical in two acts Director Mare Tommingas Musical Director and Conductor Tarmo Leinatamm Stage Designer Jaanus Laagriküll Costume Designer Ester Kannelmäe Light Designer Palle Palmé (Sweden) Choreography Janek Savolainen, Mare Tommingas Producer Aivar Tommingas The author of the lyrics of the musical is Bob Merrill. The libretto was written by Peter Stone based on Robert Thoeren’s story and Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond’s film Some Like It Hot. The plot of the musical is like in the best of soap operas – one never knows who is actually who and how the story ends. In with subtitles MANOn sugar Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein THE SOUND OF MUSIC (HELISEV MUUSIKA) Musical in two acts Translators Leelo Tungal, Hannes Villemson Director Ain Mäeots Musical Director and Conductor Tarmo Leinatamm Stage Designer Riina Degtjarenko (Estonian Drama Theatre) Costume Designer Gerly Tinn Light Designer Palle Palmé (Sweden) Choreographer Antton Laine (Finland) The movie shot in Hollywood with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the lead is loved all around the world. A little less known is the fact that the world famous musical is based on a true story. The actual Maria was sent to educate just one not seven children and the eldest of the captain’s children was a boy not a girl, also the names of children were changed (one of the girl was also named Maria). The Von Trapps, after getting married, spent some years in Austria and then escaped to Italy not Switzerland. Beautiful music and scenery and good acting has made the story of this family full of beauty and excitement for many generations. In Estonia „The Sound of Music“ is brought on stage for the third time already, for the Vanemuine stage this production is the first. In with and subtitles MANON Opera in three acts Musical Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp Director Marko Matvere Stage Designer Maarja Meeru Choreographer Marika Aidla The premiere took place at Opera Comique in Paris in 1884. It was an instant success and it remained in the repertoire of Opera Comique until 1959. Massenet’s Manon is one of the most popular French operas of all times. It talks about the tragic love affair of Manon Lescaut and Le Chevalier des Grieux. It is a marvellous example of the music and culture of the Paris belle époque. In with subtitles THE SOUND OF MUSIC Janno Põldma / Heiki Ernits / Priit Pajusaar DETECTIVE LOTTE (DETEKTIIV LOTTE) Children’s musical in two acts Lyrics by Leelo Tungal Director Ain Mäeots Musical Director and Conductor Tarmo Leinatamm Conductor Lauri Sirp Stage Designer Iir Hermeliin (Tallinn City Theatre) Choreographer Janek Savolainen This time the friendly and affectionate dog called Lotte tries to decide who she will be when she grows up. The day which has just begun gives her a marvellous idea when her father Oskar finds out that the sugar machine he has invented has gone missing. Lotte and her friend Bruno decide not to wait doing nothing, but to become detectives and find the machine themselves. In DETECTIVE LOTTE Olav Ehala / Oskar Luts THE IMP (NUKITSAMEES) Children musical in two acts Libretto by Leelo Tungal Lyrics by Juhan Viiding, Leelo Tungal Director Eva Klemets Musical Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp Stage and Costume Designer Iir Hermeliin (Tallinn City Theatre) Story about Iti and Kusti lost in the forest who run into the Woods Crone house. They are forced to do hard work there and take care of the small Imp. It is familiar to many Estonian children generations. “Nukitsamees” (The Imp) by Oskar Luts belongs to the Estonian children’s literature classics. In THE IMP CARRRMEN! NEW Composer Ardo Ran Varres Director - Choreographer Ruslan Stepanov As a director I am interested in the psyche and logic of such a strong and unrestrained person like Carmen. What is her motivation for the inadequate and inconsiderate behavior. Also as a whole the emerging of negative stereotypes that result from all her provocativity. Ruslan Stepanov - “Jose, what you ask is impossible. I don’t love you any more. You love me still, and that is why you want to kill me. If I liked, I might tell you some other lie, but I don’t choose to give myself the trouble. Everything is over between us two. You are my /rom/, and you have the right to kill your /romi/, but Carmen will always be free. A /calli/ she was born, and a /calli/ she’ll die.’ Now I don’t love anything, and I hate myself for ever having loved you.” - “I offer you everything if you would only love me again.” - “Love you again? That’s not possible! Live with you? I will not do it!’ -”For the last time I ask you. Will you stay with me?” - “No! no! no!”. P. Merimee “Carmen” CASANOVA Ballet in two acts Choreographer-Director, Costume and Music Designer David Sonnenbluck (Belgium) Historical Costumes Mare Tommingas Light Designers Imbi Mälk, Andres Sarv From time to time the fate of Casanova has excited the desire for beauty. That scandalous Venetian was not only an adventurer, fraud and a freethinker as he is usually portrayed, but also a poet, memoir writer, philosopher and musician. Emanating from that, David Sonnenbluck with its style as well as music has created a timeless ballet – it is baroque as well as contemporary at the same time. The production makes use of the music by Mozart, Vivaldi, Typsi and traditional Arabic music. Casanova MOWGLI Dance production in two acts Music Director and Conductor Choreographers-Directors Jenny MacNamara (England) and Mare Tommingas Costume Designer Mare Tommingas Stage Design Vladimir Anshon Light Design Margus Vaigur (Endla) „Mowgli” is again brought on stage, and this time it is completely original – from inside out. „Mowgli” is a story about a teenage boy who is searching for his place and himself in the big human jungle. Pyotr Tchaikovsky ONEGIN ONEGIN Ballet in two acts by A. Pushkin´s novel „Eugene Onegin” Libretto Valeriy Modestov (Russia) Choreographer-producer Vassili Medvedev (Russia) Choreographer-repetitor Stanislav Fečo (Czech Republic) Stage Designer Boriss Kaminski (Russia) Costume Designer Josef Jelinek (Czech Republic) Musical Director and Conductor Andrei Anikhanov (Mikhailovsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia) Conductor Lauri Sirp Tatiana, who is only 17 years old, falls in love with Onegin, who is older than she is, and in the hot gust of passion she writes him a letter revealing her feelings. Onegin rejects the girl’s declaration of love gently, but firmly. Years later he returns and meets the now grown-up, elegant and married Tatiana and falls head over heels in love with her. Onegin professes his love to her passionately, but it is too late – the woman admits that she still loves him, but she will remain true to his wedded husband. Pyotr Tchaikovsky THE NUTCRACKER Ballet in two acts Choreographer-Producer Pär Isberg (Sweden) Libretto based on Elsa Beskov’s children’s book “Petters och Lottas Jul” (Petter’s and Lotta’s Christmas) by Pär Isberg and Erik Näslund Stage Designer Bo-Ruben Hedwall (Sweden) Costume Designer Ann-Mari Anttila (Sweden) Light Designer Torkel Blomkvist (Sweden) Musical Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp A classical ballet with grand and impressive decorations and beautiful music again in the repertoire of the Vanemuine! Two orphans, Petter and Lotta, live together with their aunts Brown, Green and Lavender. This is their first Christmas together when the children can themselves go to the woods and bring a Christmas tree and then later decorate it. The Christmas preparations are in full swing. The children do not understand much of the mysterious bustle as they have never celebrated Christmas before. The guests arrive and the Christmas goat arrives with presents…Lotta gets nutcrackers shaped like a Christmas goat and Petter gets a hobby horse. When the guests have left, it is time for the children to go to bed, but only then do the really mysterious things start to happen… THE NUTCRACKER Kreutzwald meets Dance NEW Composer Liisa Hirsch Director - Choreographer Jaan Ulst If you bravely dig into folk dirt, a bit of shit will likely adhere. Folklore meets 2012. What is a fable? Your favourite characters all meet in a new story? Does this story have a moral, then again does our westernized society even need a moral anymore? Do we need supplementary benefits to hold on to the “fabled”? Kreutzwald meets Dance talks about the perception of the world surrounding us. The versions of stories through centuries I mould into the language of contemporary dance. The core of the dance performance is to combine characters from Estonian fables into a world of fairy-tales that reaches out to the child in us. The characters weave into each other and change. The border between the reality and phantasy fades away and we arrive to the playground of the modern man who is constantly faced with the choice of information, sides, people, animals, morals and realities.
