The Blues then stunned the PacWest world last month by winning the provincial title and grabbing a spot in the national championships. Their run at the ultimate prize, however, ended early in Ontario with an opening round loss to the host Niagara College Knights last Thursday. The match started well for the secondseeded Blues as they blasted to a big win in the first set but the seventh-seeded Knights charged back and won in five grueling sets (16-25, 2518, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8) in front of a raucous home crowd. One day after landing back in Vancouver coach Bennett said his team's fast start may have actually been its downfall. With the loss the Blues were now battling for bronze. Their second match was another fierce five-setter but this time it was a win for Capilano as they topped the CÉGEP de l'Outaouais Griffons from Quebec. The tournament ended for the Blues with a 3-1 loss to a talented team from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology on Saturday. Fourth year power hitter Dan Caverly was named to the tournament's first all-star team, ending an exceptional run that saw him earn a spot on the PacWest first allstar team as well as MVP honours at the provincial championships. Despite the disappointment of missing the medals at nationals, Bennett was still blown away by the performance of his team this year. Dan averaged 3.21 digs/game. In his 4 years of play, Dan has finished 2nd in PACWEST men’s volleyball division in DIGS and has finished first 2 times. In 2012/13, the left side power hitter was selected a first team PACWEST all-star, was the PACWEST provincial tournament MVP and was selected as a CCAA national tournament 1st team all-star. Caverly broke the Blues regular season DIGS record mark when he registered 286 DIGS over the 2012/13 season. Dan bested his mark of 269 (3.32 avg) from 2011/12. The previous record holder to Dan was Mike Groff in 2005/06 with 156 digs. Dan was also 2nd in the PACWEST in KILLS with 4.15 KILLS/set and was ranked 4th in the CCAA in KILLS. Caverly was 3rd in total offensive stats in the PACWEST with 4.73/set. Without Dan’s contribution on defense and team leading Attack Efficiency, the Blues would not have been in play-off contention. “I am very proud of Dan’s accomplishments this year. He had a very good year," said Capilano Blues head coach Nathan Bennett. "He was solid in reception, he put the ball away when he had the chance and if he couldn't put it away he put them in trouble. Very consistent serving and his defense was impeccable." The Blues finished 4th in the PACWEST regular season league play 15-9 and defeated the #1 PACWEST (#2 CCAA) Douglas College Royals to win the provincial championships to earn a berth in the CCAA National Championships. The last time the Blues played in the nationals was in 2004. Jennifer Bodnar, Women’s Basketball Jenn, has been named the Blues Female Athlete of the Year in her 5th and final year of competition in the PACWEST . Jenn has been the floor general for the Blues this past season. She led the team in assists (3.65) and was 3rd in the PACWEST. This 5th year veteran averaged 9.76 points per game (3rd on the team) and was one of the leaders in the locker room. She had proven herself to be one of the top defenders on the team by taking 32 charges in the regular season. Jenn was the Blues team MVP, a PACWEST Allstar and PACWEST provincial tournament all-star. A stellar season for the Capilano University women's basketball team ended one step away from their ultimate goal when the Blues lost in the PACWEST championship final to Vancouver Island University. The silver-medal showing for Capilano - regular season champs in the PACWEST league - meant that the Blues did not qualify for the national championship tournament. In that tournament, Bodnar shone again for the Blues, leading the team in scoring with 16 points while adding three rebounds, two assists, two blocks and four steals. "She's our fifth-year vet, she played like it was the last tournament of her career for sure," said rookie head coach, Ramin Sadaghiani. "She left it all out on the floor - I think she picked up seven or eight charges in two games. She was a leader throughout the tournament. I just can't say enough about her. She plays so hard and is such a competitor. She definitely was on top of her game this weekend (provincial championship)."
