FirstIwanttothankeveryonewhomadethisyear’sHouseofDelegatesasuccessafter
havingtocancelouroriginaldateinOctober.Fromthefirstfrantictextmessages,to
quicklygettingoutthecancellationnotice,toreschedulingtoaonedayHODbusiness
meeting,ittookavillage.Fortunatelywehavededicated,diligent,hardworkingpeople
inourvillage.
ThankyoutoKarenAvey,MelanieBartlam,andEmilieBonovitchforworkingtogetusa
newhotelmeetingspace.ThankstoJulieSimms,IreneConnelly,andMarianMartinfor
workingthroughthelogisticsofhowtogetthemeetingdoneinoneday.
Rememberallthosethingsthatwewentthroughtogetherewerejustlearning
opportunities.

Sheisafriend,confidant,mentor,spiritualadvisor,andpartnerinthesisterhoodofthe
GRDHA.
IhavebeeninvolvedinVDHAforover20years.Ican’tsayIeveraspiredtoholdthe
officeofPresidentIjustdecideditwasmytimeandImightbeabletohelpmakesome
positivechanges.
WhenIfirstcameonboardlastyearasPresidentelectIrealizedtherewasgoingtobea
themeduringmytenureinleadershipinVDHA.Theoverarchingthemeischange.Some
ofthechangeswillbeofourchoosingandsomewillbethrustuponus,somechanges
willbeeasy,somewillbedifficult.
TherehavebeenchangesthispastyearaswewereabletobringonSusanMotleyour
newexecutiveassociate.Formanyyearswehavetalkedabouttheneedtohave
someoneassistusinourorganizationalmanagement.Myhopeistoworkwithherhelp
tostreamlinethethingswedoandmakethedutiesweallagreetotakeonless
cumbersome.Herwisdominguidingorganizationswillhelpusnavigatethesechanges
toaccomplishourgoals.
InthenearfuturewewillbeaskedtomakesomechangesbyADHA.Ihopethatwecan
allkeepanopenmindandthingsgoassmoothlyaspossible.
Theywillbeaskingustomakesomegovernancechangesandatthistimewearenot
exactlysurewhatthosewillbe.Idoknowitwillaffectusallthewaytothecomponent
level.Iaskthatyouallbepreparedtorollwiththechangesthatareahead.
IbelievethatmygoalsforVDHAthisyearareprobablythesameasmostofthosethat
camebeforeme.
Iwanttoprotectourprofessionbybeingvigilantaboutmaintainingthehighest
standardsoforalhealthcarethatshouldbeprovidedbyacollegeeducatedlicensed
dentalhygienist.Wemuststandfirminourbeliefthatthereshouldnotbealoweringof
thestandardofcareasasubstitutefortrulyprotectingandimprovingtheoralhealthof
allpeopleofVirginia.
Wemustcontinuetoworkwithallpossiblestakeholderstoimproveaccesstocarefor
allpeopleofVirginia.Myhopeisthatworkingwithallstakeholderswillleadtoachange
inlegislationthatresultsinremovingtherestrictionswecurrentlyfaceinthepracticeof
dentalhygienethatkeepsoralhealthoutofthereachofsomany.
Thefactofthematteristhatnoneofthisgetsdonewithoutmembersupport.Ofcourse
Iampreachingtothechoirrightnow.ButIneedeachofyoutobemessengers.Our
commongoalofincreasingmembershipmakesitpossibletodoalltheotherthings.
Honestlyformetheendresultofeveryoneofthesegoalscomesbacktobeingableto
providethebestpossiblecareforallwhoneedit.

CallingallhygienistsinVirginia!PleasemarkyourcalendarsforJanuary29th(SnowDate
Feb.12asourannualRallyDay.Weinviteyoutojoinhundredsofdentalhygienistsand
studentsaswemeetwithourStateLegislatorstodiscussimportantbillsandbudget
itemsthatcouldaffectthepracticeandscopeofdentalhygiene,aswellasearn1CE
hour.Comejoinotherhygienistsfromalloverthestateandensurethatourvoicesare
heard.
PriortomeetingourStateLegislators,wewillhaveamorningbriefingonwhattoexpect
duringRallyDay.Themorningbriefingwillinformparticipantsabouttheagendaforthe
day,importanttalkingpoints,andthecurrentlegislativeagenda.VDHAwillprovide
oralhealthkitsforthelegislatorsandtheirlegislativeaidefilledwithtoothbrushes,
toothpaste,floss,andimportanttalkingpointsforthesession.WeneedYOUtohelp
distributetheseoralhealthkitsandmeetyourstatelegislators.

VHyPACmember.Wecancontinuethebasket“silentauction”withthecontributions

November6wasanawesome3-hourCEontotalhealthattheZachariasGaney
Institute.Dr.Zachariasspokeaboutmetabolicsyndromeandtheimportantrolesproper
nutrition,stressrelief,andexerciseplayinreducingtheeffectontheorgans.Each
hygienistparticipatedinayogacoursedemonstratingwaystoimplementstretchesand
strengthtrainingtosupportourspineduringourwork.Thenutritionist’smessage
incorporatedhealthyfoodchoiceswithanassorteddisplayofvegetableshighinfiber
andsuggestedwaystopreparethem.Ahealthylunchwasprovidedandmany
colleaguesstayedandenjoyedcatchingupwithoneanother.
GRDHAmembers,studentdelegates,andpagesdisplayedtheirprideatthe2015House
ofDelegates,celebratingtheyear-endforMichelleMcGregorasVDHAPresident.
