MovingForwardwithRemoteSupervision
Lastyear,theVDHAHouseofDelegatesvotedonthedefinitionofremotesupervision.
Thedefinitionwehaveaddedtoourglossarystates:Remotesupervision–Adentisthas
periodiccommunicationwithadentalhygienistregardingpatientcare.Thedentistshall
notberequiredtohavepreviouslyexaminedthepatientandneednotbepresentwhen
thedentalhygieneservicesareprovided.
Thisinternalpolicychangewaspartofaprocesstowardworkingonpro-active
legislationtoexpandhowandwhereDentalHygienistsmaypracticeunderRemote
Supervision.WorkingwithVDAovermanymonths,VDHAcametoaconsensusto
initiatearemotesupervisionbill,whichpassedunanimouslythroughtheentire
legislativeprocess.TheGovernorsignedSB712onMarch25th2016.Readthefullbill

Iwillsharesomeexcerptsfromthebill:
Adentalhygienistshallonlypracticeunderremotesupervisionatacommunityhealth
center,charitablesafetynetfacility,freeclinic,long-termcarefacility,elementaryor
secondaryschool,HeadStartprogram,orwomen,infants,andchildrenprogram.
Whilethisstepforwardhasclearlimitationsonsitesofservice,ourbeliefisthatthiswill
openupaccesstocareformoreVirginians.Wehopethatsomenew,innovative
agreementsbetweendentists,hygienists,andotherstakeholderswilltakeplaceasa
resultofthisbill.

Thebillalsostates:
Afterconductinganinitialoralassessmentofapatient,adentalhygienistpracticing
underremotesupervisionshallconsultwiththesupervisingdentistpriortoproviding
furtherdentalhygieneservicesifsuchpatientismedicallycompromisedorhas
periodontaldisease.
Thiswasoneofthemorerestrictiveportionsofthebill.Wewillbeworkinghardto
makethismorefeasibleandunderstandableforallwhowishtopracticeunderremote
supervision.AsaresultofquestionsfromVDHAmembers,wehavealreadyhada
positivedialoguewiththeVDAabouthowtoclarifythissection.
Ifhygienistsoutthereareinterestedinworkinginafreeclinic,longtermcarefacility,or
anyplaceoutlinedinthebillpleasetakethetimetoreviewthisbillandseehowitmight
workforyouandyouremployerdentist.VDHAleadershipiseagertohearabout
creativeapproachesandbestpracticesthatwecanshareandduplicate.
Wewillcontinueoureffortstomakethisnewlawworkbetterandcontinuetoremove
roadblockstooralhealthcareforallpeopleofVirginia.Weappreciatethesupportof
ourmembersandstakeholderpartnersasweadvanceworkableimprovementsto
Virginia’slawsandregulations.

NewResource:OralHealthIntegrationToolkit
Dentalprovidershaveauniqueopportunitytoaddresstheirpatients’comprehensive
healthcareneedsbyintegratingclinicalservicesintothedentalpractice.Servicessuch
asdiabetesandbloodpressurescreeningandsubstanceabuseidentificationcan
improvepatientwellnessandunderscoretherelationshipbetweenoralhealthand
overallhealth.Dentalhygienistsareparticularlypoisedtoimprovepublichealthand
provideoralhealtheducation,duetotheirstrongbackgroundinhealthprotection,
diseasepreventionandhealthpromotion.
Healthprovidersfrommultipledisciplinesoutsideofdentistrycandeliveroralhealth
services,educationandreferralsinmostcaresettingsaswell.Integratingoralhealth
intoallaspectsofhealthcarecanexpandaccesstooralhealthservicesandenhance
comprehensivecare.Inmanyinstances,oralhealthserviceslikefluoridevarnish
applicationandoralhealthassessmentsarereimbursable.Inallinstances,integrating
oralhealthandclinicalservicessupportscollaborativecareandwhole-bodyhealth.
TheVirginiaOralHealthCoalition(VaOHC)hasputtogetheranewresourcefordental
andmedicalproviderswhoareinterestedinintegratingoralhealthandclinicalservices:
theIntegrationToolkit.ThetoolkitishostedonVaOHCwebsiteandisaccessiblefrom
theirhomepage(www.vaoralhealth.org).
TheIntegrationToolkitisanonlineresourcethatwalksyouthroughkeystepsof
integration,fromidentifyingyourpatients’majorhealthcareneedstoanalyzing
financialmodels,andmore.Thetoolkitincludes:
• Sampleoralhealthintegrationmodels;
• Promptquestionstoconsiderwithyourteam;
• Clinicalpracticetoolsforthedentaloffice;and,
• Continuingeducationopportunitiesfordentalandmedicalproviders.
VaOHCdevelopedtheIntegrationToolkitwithgrantfundingfromtheRichmond
MemorialHealthFoundation,inpartnershipwithTheDailyPlanetandCommunity

OrthodonticsandPediatricCareinFebruary.Theparticipantsweretreatedtodinner
andlaminatedhandoutsthatwillbeveryusefulinrecognitionofadolescentearly
interventionneeds.

EmilieBonovitchdidanexcellentjobasScientificSessionPlanningChairworkingclosely
withtheVDHAPlanningandDevelopmentCouncilandcommitteechairs.Sheexecuted
thelogistics,menuselection,andcommunicationwiththeHiltonlikeapro.Special
thankstothememberswhotookturnsmanningtheregistrationdeskallweekendand
forthosewhohelpedwithsalesoftheHuFriedyInstrumentbasketandtheCrownStool
RaffleticketsfortheVDHAfundraiser.
TheCEforMarchprovidedinformationandinstructiononMELT,amethodof
rehydratingareasofinflammationinthebodyandhealingconnectivetissue.Also,Lisa
Williams,HygieneEducator,spoketousaboutairpolishers,ultrasonicinstrumentation
andtheFAQsoncareandusageofeach.DentsplysponsoredLisaandprovideda
wonderfuldinner.

GRDHAcelebratedwiththeVCUseniorstudentsattheGardenGroveBrewery.Thisis
aneventfulloffoodanddoorprizes.Ourfuturehygienistsminglewithlocal
professionalsastheyofferadviceoncareeroptions.
WewillbegearingupsoonfortheFallHouseofDelegates,heldattheFour
PointsSheratoninMidlothianinSeptember,andwouldlovetohearfromanyonewho
thinkstheymightbeinterestedinservingasDelegateorattendtheProfessional
DevelopmentWorkshop.

baseddecisionmakingforone’sfutureutilizationinsofttissuemanagementwere.
ConductingtheFebruaryCEonthestudents’turfatThomasNelsonCommunityCollege
(TNCC)allowedthemtoproudlyleadatouroftheirstate-of-the-artclinicalfacilitiesand
respondtoattendees’inquiries.

OnMarch21st,duringschoolhours,TrusteeGreenvisitedwiththeTNCCseniorclass
andengagedingroupdialogueonthebenefitsoftripartite,professionalmembership,
visionsoftheirfutureasprofessionalsandopportunitiesforthemtoadvancetheir
influenceandimpactasleaders.Thestudentswerepresentedwithexamgiftbags
containingawealthofdelectabletreatsandsupportivesuppliesfortheirupcoming
boards.

Northwestcomponentcontributed$25perstudentfortheirregistrationfee.It's
encouragingtoseesomanyrisingstarstakingahigherinterestintheirprofession.
AcontinuingeducationcoursewillbeheldatLFCCinNovemberwithCarolJahnandJim
OverbyofBiolaseSurgicalwhoisalaserspecialist.Moredetailstocome.
NWVDHAComponentprovidedtheLFCCgraduatingclassof2016withagiftbaganda
framefortheirlicenseswhichwillbehandedoutattheirceremony.Weareveryproud
ofourgraduatesespeciallyduetothehighnumberofgraduatesthisyear.Weare
alreadypreparingforthenewroundofhungrydentalhygienestudentsthisAugustfor

DoyouknowtheinspiringstoryofBenefactor,AliceHinchcliffeWilliams,RDH,MS,and
herlegacy?
AlicewasadentalhygieneeducatorinRoanokeandapractitionerinLynchburg,
Virginia.FollowinggraduationfromEastmanSchoolofDentalHygieneinRochester,NY,
Aliceworkedasaschooldentalhygienistserving20schoolsinLiverpool,NY.Her
leadershipskillsasPresidentoftheDentalHygienists’AssociationoftheStateofNew
YorkbecameanassetoftheVirginiaDentalHygienists’Associationinherserviceas
Trustee.WithherMastersdegreeinScienceEducationfromUVA,shethenmovedon
tobecomethefounderanddirectoroftheDentalHygieneProgramatVirginiaWestern
CommunityCollegein1975.Herpassionforscholarshipandlifelonglearningfordental
hygienistsisexemplifiedwithherlong-standing,generousandvisionarysupportofthe
VDHA’scontinuingeducationspeaker’sfund.
AsthebenefactoroftheVirginiaDentalHygienists’AssociationFoundation(VDHAF)in
1994,Aliceendowedtheperpetualfund,establishingittoprovidelifelonglearning
experiencesforcurrentandfuturegenerationsofdentalhygieniststhroughoutVirginia.
ThemembersoftheVDHArespondedtothegiftbyraisingmatchingfundsthatistoday
administeredthroughtheAliceHinchcliffeWilliamsContinuingEducationFund.When
youmakeyourtax-deductibledonationtoVDHA’sFoundation,youarefullysupporting
thecontinuanceofAlice’slegacyandthefoundation’sperformanceofcharitable,
educational,researchandscientificactivities.
MargeGreen,RDH,MS,co-foundingdirectorandtreasureroftheVDHAFoundation,
says,“Alicewasaveryspecialcolleagueandfriendwhowarmedtheheartsofallwho
knewher.Herlong-standingsupporthasenrichedtheprofessionaldevelopmentof
studentsandpractitionersandtheadvancementofthedentalhygieneprofession.The
qualitiesthatmadeherawonderfulpersoncontributedtohermanyleadership
accomplishmentsandpassionforlifelonglearningandscholarlyactivityinour
profession.HerlegacylivesoninourmanyaccomplishedVDHAleaders,grantand
scholarshiprecipientswhohavebenefitedfromhergenerosityandvision.”Afterher
retirementfromeducationin1980,Alicewentontoservehercommunitythrough
Altrusa,theOrderoftheEasternStar,herchurch,andaspresidentoftheAdultCare
