The CUNA GAC is the only credit union governmental affairs conference of its kind. This event offers the opportunity to network with peers, hear from key legislative and political leaders, and experience a variety of breakout sessions on credit unions’ hot issues. There is nowhere else where you can gather with over 3,000 credit union leaders. The GAC also offers the largest exhibit hall for credit unions, with a wide variety of products and services for your operational needs. How does my attendance benefit the CU movement? The credit union movement’s future depends on strong leadership and a continued presence on Capitol Hill. The grassroots nature of this event sends a strong message to Congress. Your attendance is key in demonstrating the strength and power of 90 million credit union members. Convention Center Where is the Washington Convention Center? It’s located between 7th and 9th Streets and N Street and Mt. Vernon Place in downtown D.C., right across from the new City Museum. Yes. The GAC will be in one section of the Convention Center. Entrances are located on the street level. Convention shuttles will drop off and pick up attendees from the Convention Center’s L Street entrance. The Mt. Vernon Place entrance is used for taxi service. Both entrances can be used for those who walk. CUNA’s Welcome Center and conference registration will be on the street level (Level 1) for easy registration access for the conference. All sessions, events, and the exhibit hall are located on Level 2, with both escalator and elevator access. Tell me about the Convention Center. The Convention Center is a state-of-the-art facility that offers an abundance of opportunities for networking, seating, and an expanded exhibit hall. The new location offers many more restaurant and entertainment options. The success of this premier credit union conference has necessitated the move to a larger location in 2008. The Convention Center offers expanded space for meetings, the exhibit hall, evening events, and networking options. The Washington subway system, the Metro, has a stop right at the Convention Center. Will there be Internet access? Yes. The conference will have expanded Internet options including free access to the Cyber Café with computers available for your use. WiFi service is also available in the registration area. What are the networking options? Will there be places to relax and meet CU peers and colleagues? One of the benefits of the GAC is networking with your peers. There will be several seating options available, as well as areas serving food and beverages for your convenience. There is no need to leave the Convention Center once you arrive each day. 1 FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Convention Center cont. Entertainment, Dining, and Tours Is there easy access for guests with disabilities? General Accessibility: There is a curbside drop-off for wheelchairs, and sidewalk curb cut-outs are located at each corner of the Convention Center. There are also ramps leading from the 9th Street and 7th Street corners to the doors at the Mt. Vernon Place entrance. Automatic doors are located at the Mt. Vernon Place, L Street, and Metro (7th and M Streets) entrances. Inside the center, all public areas are served by conveniently located elevators. The guest information booth at the Convention Center has a limited supply of wheelchairs. You may arrange for motorized scooter rentals. Please call Scootaround, 888-441-7575 option # 1, or visit www.scootaround.com. Attendees are responsible to arrange drop-off, pick-up, and payment of scooters. We would be happy to store and charge your scooters for you overnight at conference registration in the Convention Center. Where will evening events be held? The Sunday night entertainment and the Wednesday conference gala will be held at the Convention Center. The Monday Herb Wegner Memorial Awards Dinner (a separate fee is required for this event) will be held at the Grand Hyatt Washington. Tuesday’s Late Night at the GAC will be at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Hotel. For league-sponsored events, check with your league representative. Dates and Schedule What are the conference dates? February 22-26, 2009: The GAC begins on Sunday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. with the Sunday kick-off event. The conference ends at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 26. When are the Capitol Hill visits? Wednesday afternoon, February 25, 2009 is set aside for the Hill visits. Contact your state league for appointment details. What are the schedule highlights? Be sure to arrive in time to register, take a look around, and attend the exhibit hall grand opening and dessert reception at 7:00 p.m. Plan to stay for the concert at 8:30 p.m., presented by CUNA Councils. Opening general session, CUNA annual general meeting, exhibit hall open, and legislative and political update. On Monday evening, the Herb Wegner Memorial Awards Dinner will be held at the Grand Hyatt Washington (a ticketed event). General session, breakout sessions, reception with NCUA board and regional directors, and exhibit hall open. Join us for the Late Night at the GAC at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Hotel. The expanded exhibit hall area will provide access to over 300 exhibitors providing a wide range of products and services. Tell me about the exhibit hall. The expanded exhibit hall will provide ample seating options for networking, dining, and talking with vendors and exhibitors. There will be a number of special events in the exhibit hall, starting with the grand opening and dessert reception on Sunday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m. A surcharge free ATM is also available during exhibit hall hours. Credit Union Housing What are the housing options? There are 13 official GAC hotels* that will be offered through the Housing Bureau. To all rates add applicable taxes, currently 14.5%. How and when can I make my hotel reservations? Housing opens on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. EST. To learn more, visit gac.cuna.org and choose Housing. After housing opens on Thursday, November 6, 2008, reservations can be made on the web, phone, or fax. • Web site: gac.cuna.org 24 hours a day, seven days a week. • Phone: 800-974-3084, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. • Fax: Beginning on November 7, you can fax reservations to 800-521-6017 or 847-940-2386. (Fax reservations are not accepted on opening day.) A $250 per room deposit, payable by major credit card, is required for ALL reservations at the time of booking. Your credit card will be charged and you will receive a room confirmation via e-mail from the Housing Bureau. A limit of 10 room reservations per call or web order will apply. Changes and cancellations: • If your method of payment changes after your initial reservation, it will be considered a credit card change. A $50 credit card change fee will be applied for each reservation affected. • Reservations cancelled by Wednesday, December 10, 2008 will receive their full deposit back. • For reservations cancelled after December 11, 2008 there is a $250 cancellation fee per room. • All reservations, changes, and cancellations must be made with the Housing Bureau through Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 4:30 p.m. EST. • Between January 15 and January 21, 2009 the Housing Bureau will transfer reservation information to participating hotels. During this time no housing changes can be made. • Beginning January 22, 2009 all changes and cancellations must be made directly with the hotel and all deposits are non-refundable. ASKED QUESTIONS How do I take advantage of the federal tax exemption? To qualify for tax exemption from state and local taxes assessed to room charges, payment must be made by check or credit card from a federal credit union. Payments made by personal check or credit card will not qualify. Visit gac.cuna.org to download the tax exemption form. How far are the official CUNA GAC hotels from the Convention Center? There are a few hotels within a block of the Convention Center. Several other hotels are within easy access of the Center via shuttle or cab. CUNA will provide shuttle service to and from all official GAC hotels to the Convention Center. Metro and cab service is also available to make the commute to the Convention Center easy. A special rate is offered for credit unions under $35 million in assets. To register online at the $450 rate, select “Yes” when asked, “Are you from a credit union under $35 million in assets?” What other financial assistance is available? If your credit union has assets of $35 million or less, you may be eligible for financial assistance to attend the GAC. Check with your state credit union foundation on the availability of educational scholarships. In addition, CUNA is pleased to offer the opportunity for GAC financial assistance through the generosity of credit union donations nationwide. Deadline to apply is January 5, 2009. How do I register for the conference? Register online at gac.cuna.org. Affiliation with CUNA/League is required for attendance, but limited exceptions may apply. Please contact CUNA prior to making travel arrangements to confirm eligibility. Where do I pick up my conference registration materials at the Convention Center? All attendees can pick up their badge and conference registration information at CUNA’s Welcome Center in the Convention Center. The Welcome Center opens Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and is open every day during conference hours. ASKED QUESTIONS Who is eligible to participate in the Guest Program? The guest category is designed for spouses/companions. Credit union employees, elected officials/volunteers, and suppliers are not eligible to register under this category. How do I learn more about the Herb Wegner Memorial Awards Dinner? The Herb Wegner Memorial Awards Dinner will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009 starting at 6:00 p.m. The dinner is located at the Grand Hyatt Washington. For ticket pricing and more information visit www.ncuf.coop. Tickets for this event must be purchased separately. Are breakfast and lunch provided at the Convention Center? Yes. On Monday and Tuesday a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided in the exhibit hall. On Wednesday and Thursday a breakfast beverage service will be provided. The Convention Center offers Starbucks and many cash food outlets. What’s available in the Welcome Center? The Welcome Center is the starting point for the conference. Can I receive Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits? CUNA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State Boards of Accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. The complete list of conference schedule, keynoters, and breakout sessions is available online at gac.cuna.org. The content is updated often as the program is developed, so check the Web site regularly for the most current updates. Transportation How can I save on airfare? United Airlines is the “official airline” for the program. Call United’s Specialized Meetings Reservation Center at 800-521-4041 to make your airline reservations. Please reference ID# 553SF. How do I get from the airport to the Convention Center? Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), at a distance of six miles, is the closest airport to all of the Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) hotels. The one-way taxi fare from the airport is approximately $20-$30. Travel time is about 30 minutes. Super Shuttle departs from the airport every 30 minutes. One-way fare is approximately $14. Upon arrival, go to the group transportation level for assistance. From Ronald Reagan National Airport: • Take the George Washington (GW) Parkway north to I-395 and Washington, D.C. • Follow signs to the 14th Street Bridge. • Proceed across the 14th Street to Independence Avenue. • Turn right onto Independence Avenue and proceed two blocks to 7th Street. • Turn left on 7th Street and proceed 12 blocks to Mt. Vernon Place. • Turn left on Mt. Vernon Place. • The Washington Convention Center will be on your right. From Dulles International Airport: Dulles International Airport is approximately 25 miles or 40-60 minutes from the conference hotels. The average one-way fare from Dulles is roughly $45-$50. Approximate one-way Super Shuttle fare from Dulles is $22, with a $10 charge for each additional passenger. • Take I-66 East to Washington. • Take Route 50/Constitution Avenue exit. • Proceed on Constitution Avenue. • Turn left on 7th Street. • Proceed nine blocks on 7th Street and turn left on Mt. Coat and luggage check will be available for your convenience in the Convention Center east registration area. What are the transportation options from my hotel to the conference each day? Access to the Convention Center is easy. • CUNA sponsored shuttles will be available Sunday through Thursday for all official conference hotels. A shuttle schedule will be provided with your confirmation, and a schedule will be posted at conference sponsored hotels. Shuttles pick up and drop off attendees at the L Street entrance. • Metro access: The METRO stops at Mt. Vernon Sq/7th St. Convention Center on the Yellow or Green Line. • Taxis are also available at the Mt. Vernon entrance. How far are hotel accommodations from the Convention Center? All CUNA recommended housing options are either walking distance or quick commutes via CUNA sponsored shuttles. Is there parking available at the Convention Center? There are more than 2,000 parking spaces in a three block radius of the facility. These spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Convention Center encourages exhibitors and attendees to use the public parking facilities, so that it does not impact the limited residential parking. There are also approximately 100 metered parking spaces within close proximity to the facility. There are 12 designated public parking spaces designated for vehicles displaying disability parking placards/permits or license tags.
