2013 ANNUAL REPORT Empowering Children In Need Through The Camp Experience “When you are at camp you feel like a totally different person. I like camp because it keeps kids active and having fun. You can do more things at camp than on the streets.” – Christopher OUR MISSION SCOPE’s mission is to provide children in need with the edge to succeed in life through the summer camp experience. We accomplish this by funding summer camp scholarships at nonprofit resident camps where children will benefit from a positive, safe and healthy environment, led by excellent adult role models who will help them develop their full potential. OUR BELIEF By opening the door to summer camp opportunities and with our focus on education, we inspire and empower SCOPE campers to make positive contributions to their communities and become selfsustaining adults. 1 FOUNDER’S MESSAGE When we started SCOPE in 1991, we dreamed that we could give kids from underserved communities a chance for a brighter future. Since then, SCOPE has sent more than 25,000 children to summer camp. SCOPE gives kids the enhanced self-esteem, confidence and resilience they need. Camp is their reward for staying in school. Now, thanks to your support, we promise every camper who graduates from high school a full scholarship at a state university. Over 50% of the children in communities served by SCOPE never finish high school. Summer camp can offer these children new experiences that can change their lives. Affluent children have benefitted from summer camp for decades. The children in our underachieving communities need those benefits even more. And they need to know we care. SCOPE is about giving kids an opportunity for the brighter future that all children deserve – one child at a time. Jay Jacobs SCOPE Founder Did you know that… …high school drop-out rates for low income youth are 4x greater than high income students. 2 MESSAGE FROM OUR LEADERSHIP Dear Friends and Supporters Summer camp empowers children to succeed not only academically but in life. In 2013 with your support, SCOPE partnered with community agencies and summer camps to provide life-enriching camp experiences for more than 1200 children in the Northeast, Midwest and Southeast regions. Our board’s dedication has enabled SCOPE to seek ways to expand our mission and services to meet growing needs. Our focus reflects our mission and goals and best defines the integration of formal school learning and the experiential education provided by excellent summer camps. We now support these children well beyond their camp years by providing scholarship assistance for their college educations. We thank our visionary board of directors, tireless volunteers and dedicated staff. We also thank the many foundation partners, corporate sponsors and individual donors for their generous and continued support, which enables SCOPE to provide outstanding summer camp opportunities for deserving children year after year. With warm appreciation for your belief and ongoing support, Mitch Reiter President, SCOPE Board Michele Friedman Executive Director Did you know that… …in our first year, SCOPE sent 26 children to camp. Today, we send 1,300 per year. 3 HOW SCOPE WORKS Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education (SCOPE) SCOPE provides scholarship funding exclusively to ACA accredited, nonprofit resident camps with a focus on children in need. Annual grant determinations depend on the success of SCOPE’s yearly fundraising by region. In addition campers that return each summer through SCOPE and graduate from high school will be entitled to apply for college scholarships through the Sanford Lavitt Education Fund. For camps to qualify for SCOPE participation they must: Have current ACA accreditation Be a nonprofit resident camp with current 501(c)(3) status Provide a current operating permit issued by the Department of Health (or local equivalent) For campers to qualify for SCOPE funding they must: Qualify for USDA free or reduced price lunch Be enrolled in a public school CHILDREN SERVED The children served by SCOPE come from low income communities and reside in places with regional affiliates. SCOPE believes that summer camp is an essential component of the year-round educational continuum and plays a critical role in helping children from underserved communities to thrive. While their more affluent peers are often enrolled in summer camps and programs that strengthen and reinforce learning, the vast majority of children in low-income communities have little or no access to these opportunities, resulting in an enormous achievement gap. SCOPE bridges this gap by making summer camp accessible to as many deserving children as possible. In order to participate in SCOPE, campers must: Be ages 7-16 years old Meet family income eligibility requirements established by the US Department of Agriculture for free or reduced-price school lunch Be enrolled in public school Agree to comply with the registration procedures and rules and regulations of the chosen camp Complete an application essay expressing their desire and motivation to attend resident camp 4 COMMUNITY PARTNERS CAMP BROOKLYN SCOPE works closely with many community organizations and foundations to facilitate placement for specific children. SCOPE administers funds raised by the Camp Brooklyn Fund, Inc. This program makes camp available to Brooklyn residents who cannot otherwise afford the camp experience. “I want the feeling of independence and confidence to make it someday on my own just like my big brother. I want the chance to be somebody someday.” – Israel 5 SCOPE HISTORIC MILESTONES So far, 25,000 children in three regions have attended summer camp through SCOPE, with over $6 million raised from foundations, individuals and corporations. Since 2005, when we launched our separate 501(c)(3), SCOPE has tripled our revenue and expanded nationally. SCOPE begins as program of ACA-NY. 26 children attend camp with funding from camp directors in New York. Begins long-term partnership with Jay and Mindy Jacobs. Heckscher Foundation for Children funding begins. Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation funding begins. Separates from ACA-NY and forms a separate 501(c)(3) organization. New York Yankees provide SCOPE with funding for 100 children. SCOPE Midwest launches as first affiliate, 100 children to attend camp. Camp Lisa Foundation established by Lisa Loeb, begins SCOPE funding. The Henry Nias Foundation funding begins. 6 Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund and Brooke Jackman Foundation funding begins. Camp Brooklyn funding begins. Boca West Children’s Charitable Foundation increases funding through annual Golf Outing. Partnership with Boys and Girls Club of Boca Raton begins. Partnership with AUSL in Chicago begins. Expansion of Corporate Partnership Program. Launch of Junior Leadership Council and Young Leadership Council. SCOPE Midwest establishes The Bradley Schwartz Campership Fund. Partnership with Modell’s Sporting Goods begins. Partnerships with Help USA and New Alternatives for Children begin funding SCOPE. SCOPE Southeast launched. New vision and branding with a focus on the year round education of children in the program. Establish Sanford Lavitt Education Fund to provide college funding. Begin database to track progress of campers. Boca West Children’s Charitable Foundation funding begins. Partnership with SOS Children’s Village begins. 1350 children attended camp through SCOPE. 7 2013 REGIONAL UPDATES Expanding Our Reach SCOPE originated in the New York Tri-State Region (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut) through the vision of directors from the American Camp Association’s New York Section (ACA-NY), and has since added three regional affiliates in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeast. SCOPE Midwest In 2007, SCOPE began a national expansion initiative to launch camp scholarship programs throughout the United States. In partnership with Dayna Hardin and Dana Kite, directors of Lake of the Woods-Greenwoods Camps and Bradley Schwartz, owner of Banner Day Camp, as well as camp directors and supporters from the Chicago area, SCOPE Midwest was established as the first affiliate. Since its inception, SCOPE Midwest has provided over 850 camp scholarships to children in need. New York Annual Benefit Dinner The Bradley Schwartz Campership Fund Established by family and friends of Bradley Schwartz, owner of Banner Day Camp and a co-founder of SCOPE Midwest, the Bradley Schwartz Campership Fund provides summer camp scholarships to honor the memory of Brad Schwartz, who passed away in 2011. In keeping with Brad’s dedication to SCOPE and passion for its mission, the Fund provides scholarships for children who attend camp through SCOPE Midwest. Since 2011, more than $60,000 has been raised for the Fund. SCOPE Southeast SCOPE Southeast was established in 2011 to serve the children in the Southeast. SCOPE administers the program and allocations to regional camps. Through local fundraising events, individual gifts, and foundation and corporate support, SCOPE Southeast provided enriching summer camp experiences to 75 children in 2013. 8 SCOPE Southeast Cocktail Reception 2013 REGIONAL EVENTS Midwest Benefit Dinner SCOPE Midwest chairs, Dayna Hardin and Dana Kite, and their large network of supporters sent 200 children in need to camp in 2013. In April, SCOPE Midwest hosted its Benefit Dinner at The Westin North Shore in Wheeling, Illinois. At the awards ceremony, SCOPE honored the late Nate and Edna Wasserman, Founding Owner/Directors of Camp Menominee (1928) and Camp Marimeta (1947) with the Lifetime Achievement in Camping Award; Tim King, Founder, President & CEO of Urban Prep Academies with the Youth Advocate Award; and Heather Knobel with the Caring Camper Award. New York Annual Benefit Dinner On April 3rd, over 450 SCOPE supporters gathered at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square for the SCOPE Benefit Dinner. Thanks to our outstanding dinner chairs, Michele and Dan Zenkel, the dinner committee, the SCOPE board and SCOPE professional staff. We raised more than $150,000 towards our mission. We were proud to honor Women in Need (WIN) with the Ben Appelbaum Advocate for Youth Award, and the 2013 Legends of Camping: Shelley and David Tager; Roland Chandler; and John Snowden. Midwest Benefit Dinner 16th Annual Golf Outing On September 23rd, SCOPE returned to the Glen Head Golf Club on Long Island to host the annual Golf Outing. This event is the official post-camp reunion for our loyal camp supporters, and it was wonderful to welcome back our friends and colleagues and to see many new faces in the crowd. Thank you to our event chairs, Anthony Medico, Dave Purow, Clifford Siegel and their committee for a successful event. SCOPE Southeast Cocktail Reception SCOPE Southeast held a gala cocktail party chaired by Jill and Josh Cohen and their enthusiastic committee. Through the generosity of their local supporters and additional support from the Boca West Children’s Charitable Foundation, SCOPE Southeast sent 75 children from the Boca Raton community to summer camp. 9 A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERS The SCOPE - Young Leadership Council (YLC) THE SCOPE-YLC, the future leaders of the organization, share their love of camp and understand the important role that summer camp plays in the development of children. This group of young professionals engage their peers in fund-raising events and projects that benefit SCOPE’s mission. The SCOPE- Junior Leadership Council (JLC) “This is where I belong. People actually respect me here. I feel safe here; I feel like I should live here and never leave.” – Bria The SCOPE-JLC is comprised of high school and middle school students who love summer camp and are motivated to give other kids the chance to have the same wonderful camp experiences. With support from their families and friends, these young philanthropists create projects that help raise funds for SCOPE. Both the YLC and the JLC work to raise money to support SCOPE through a variety of individual service projects and events. During the inaugural 2013 year, JLC members Sydnee Schapiro, Joey Siegel and Madison Siegel, fundraised for SCOPE through their Mitzvah projects. A YLC core committee was formed in New York to begin to plan events for the upcoming year. 10 “I like camp because camp is the time I can leave home and go to the forest and have fun.” – Jason PARTICIPATING CAMPS 2013 Holmes Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center Holmes, NY Berkshire Hills Copake,NY *Homeward Bound Bear Mountain, NY *Camp Fiver Earlville, NY Kiddie Keep Well Camp Edison, NJ *Camp Olmsted Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY Ma-He-Tu Bear Mountain, NY Camp Onas Ottsville, PA Nejeda Stillwater, NJ Camp Wakonda/Lanowa Harriman, NY *New York YMCA Camp Hugenot, NY Eden Village Camp Putnam Valley, NY North Shore Holiday House Huntington, NY Fairview Lake YMCA Camp Livingston, NJ Ramapo for Children Rhinebeck, NY *Indicates Camp Brooklyn Fund Participant Southeast Region Camps YMCA Camp Thunderbird Lake Wylie, SC YMCA Camp We-wa Apopka, FL Camp Beechpoint Allegan, MI Camp Jorn YMCA Manitowish Waters, WI New York Region Camps Appel Farm Arts and Music Camp Elmer, NJ Midwest Camps Surprise Lake Camp Cold Spring, NY Camp Kooch-i-ching International Falls, MN *The Fresh Air Fund Fishkill, NY Camp Rosenthal Dowagiac, MI *Top of the Pines Bear Mountain, NY Easter Seals Timber Pointe Hudson, IL *Trail Blazers Camp Montague, NJ *Vacamas West Milford, NJ *Wilbur Herrlich Patterson, NY YMCA Camp Bernie Port Murray, NJ *YMCA Camp Hi-Rock Mt. As a child growing up in New York City, she was provided with the opportunity to leave the city every summer for 11 years to attend camp with a SCOPE funded campership. Malika believes that “camp has played a major role in my life and the building of my dreams.” Going to camp was her chance to break out of her comfort zone and take risks. “I would get to go places that I probably would have never gotten the opportunity to go and meet people that I probably would have never met if I didn’t attend camp. I built such positive and long lasting relationships. Some of my best friendships and mentorships have developed because of being a camp participant.” As Malika navigates her way through young adulthood, she knows the valuable skills she learned at camp carry over to her daily life. “Doing numerous group activates taught me leadership skills and how to be a valuable team player. Camp became a home away from home, easily teaching me independence at a young age. Attending camp has been one of the most beautiful and beneficial things that I have ever done. It has truly been a life changing experience. I think every child should have the opportunity to experience going to camp and the amazing outcomes as well as outlets that it has to offer.” Esdelle 12 “I would get to go places that I probably would have never gotten the opportunity to go and meet people that I probably would have never met if I didn’t attend camp. I built such positive and long lasting relationships. Some of my best friendships and mentorships have developed because of being a camp participant.” THE CHILDREN WE SERVE The number of public school students who qualify for USDA free or reduced-priced meals. The percentage of our nation’s children who live in poverty. The percentage of U.S. students who never graduate from high school. 13 YOUR SUPPORT COUNTS Donation Amount 14 Days At Camp CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS We are proud to partner with corporations that believe and support SCOPE’s mission. 15 THE BENEFITS OF CAMP Studies have examined general learning loss among students during the summer months and found that the early learning gap among low-SES (SocioEconomic Status) students, has long-term achievement consequences. Based on the belief that summer camp is a partner in the education of children, SCOPE is dedicated to affording outstanding camp opportunities to children in need, as we have for over 20 years. Summer camp has a wide range of proven benefits. While unsupervised children run the risk of losing academic ground, children who attend well-designed summer camps can participate in educational experiences that offer artistic, musical and athletic experiences; adventurous outdoor environments; and excellent adult role models. A recent ACA study shows that the benefits of summer camp include: enhanced positive identity and confidence better social, physical and cognitive skills increased independence and leadership. These skills lead to academic achievement and can build a resiliency against negative behaviors that may surface later in children’s lives “Lessons learned in textbooks can be reinforced and extended by experiential learning in a natural setting – as can kids’ awareness of the environment, conservation and “greening” practices, such as recycling. A family vacation at the cottage will get kids outdoors, but it won’t provide them with the focused peer group and the co-operative learning chances of camp.” 16 – OurKids.net STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEARS END Revenue Expenses Contributions:$987,088 Camperships: $613,783 Special Events: $219,559 Other Program Support: $457,777 Other: $21,163 Administration: $83,356 Total: $1,227,810 Total: $1,154,916 “I start to count the days until camp once the new year starts.
