EXISTING CONDITION
Ample transformation of land use
caused by the industrialization
phenomenon.
Necessity to create new program,
recuperate the identity for a great part
of the city and generate new economic,
social and cultural relationships.
The masterplan must intervene to
resolve the superposition of program,
the fragmentation of the areas and
elements.
The mastplan intervenes as a greater
strategy for the transformation of the
city, allowing for the integration of the
waterfront with the city and the
reorganization of the road network.

With the design of the new coastline we
improve the quality of the space and
converting into a suggestive and high
impact setting.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
La Spezia as a city of reference, at the
heart of the economic and social activity
of the Western Mediterranean.
Two principle objectives: give the city a
new dynamic area and consolidate it as a
new tourist center..
The area of intervention comprehends
approximately 300,000m2 of which
40,000m2 are green areas.
The intervention includes, among others,
a new marina, two hotels, a congress
center and a new cruise terminal.
The investment totals
250,000,000 Euros.

PROJECT PROPOSAL
The configuration of the open spaces is
concieved according to the criteria and
necessity to establish and reinforce the
direct connection between the
consolidated urban fabric and the
waterfront.
Extension of the system of green spaces
reinforces the activities planned for the
site.
The tertiary spaces and services are
concieved as a continuation of the
building blocks of the existing city fabric.
The intervention completes the city
equipment, and creates new activity
through the definition of new program.

The new mobility system reorganizes the
existing network.
The new circulation axi act as unifying
urban elements, giving continuity to the
North/South relationship.
Two main axi are configured parallel to the
coastline: Via Vittorio Veneto e Viale Italia.
Viale Italia becomes an underpass at the
intersection of Piazza Europa and Via
Diaz, to reinforce and improve the
pedestrian connection with the central
area.

One of the main objectives of this
masterplan is to reconnect the city of La
Spezia with the sea.
The strategy is the creation of pedestrian
routes that connect the historic city center
with the waterfront.
These routes are integrated into the
existing road network and green spaces.
The main pedestrian routes are designed
longitudinally, parallel to the coastline,
connecting the different areas .
The promenade is divided at the entrance
of the main commercial area.

GREEN ALONG THE WATERFRONT
The treatment of green spaces is a
structural element of the masterplan
design.
The system of green spaces and the rows
of trees accompany the pedestrian paths
that connect the waterfront with the
historic city.
In the area of Calata Paita the linear
system opens up to create large green
spaces.

CALATA PAITA
Centers of attraction: 5-star hotels and
sports and recreational centers are
located at the extreme east-west axis.
In the center of Calata Paita, next to the
sea, a dance club is located, to potentiate
the nocturnal use of the area.
Our proposal attempts to bring the
resdential blocks as close to the sea as
possible.
The proposal reinforces the hotel
program.
To the south of the residential blocks, a
pedestrian area is created with a clear
commercial and public character, linked
to the green space, and from which one
has spectacular waterfront views.
The organization of these public spaces
are directly linked to the pedestrian axi,
transversely connected with the city.
