BIFF 2016 Program for Print - Boulder International Film Festival
MARCH 3–6 2016 BIFF1.com 2016 Audi A7 b Audi Boulder // Boulder International Film Festival 2016 // BIFF1.com • 1799 Exposition Drive · Boulder, CO 80301 • (303) 442-7007 • AudiBoulder.com WELCOME We’re proud and excited to present the 12th Annual Boulder International Film Festival, a wildly successful non-profit festival staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It’s all because of the huge, film-hip Boulder audiences who show up by the tens of thousands to be part of the vast world of film, ideas and passions. Because of BIFF’s tremendous growth, we’ve added three new venues this year: the Boulder Art Cinema and, for the first time, theaters in Longmont and Broomfield. For opening night, we’re excited to feature Miss Sharon Jones!, a rousing documentary from two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple, who follows soul-singing powerhouse Sharon Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings, through a tumultuous two years of despair and triumph. Critics have called it “the best musical documentary of the decade.” Robin Beeck, Executive Director Kathy Beeck, Festival Director Fresh from its smash opening-night premiere at Sundance 2016, our closing night film, Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You, features the comedic imagination that made Lear the most influential and controversial writer and producer in the history of television. The highlight of the festival will be a tribute and interview with a member of Hollywood royalty, Bruce Dern, who is currently appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, which has been nominated for three Oscars. Mr Dern has appeared in more than 80 films and has been nominated for two Oscars. We are awed this year to present, in person, a man who is a significant part of human history. Real-life space cowboy Captain Gene Cernan, who stepped off the moon in 1972, will be in Boulder to talk about his new film The Last Man on the Moon. On Friday night, BIFF presents CineCHEF, a culinary competition that will pit Boulder’s most famous chefs in a cooking shootout. These are the renowned culinary wizards who helped get Boulder its “Foodiest Town” title from Bon Appétit. Chefs will choose a movie theme and serve small plates based on that theme. BIFF’s Global Town Hall will bring together festivalgoers and experts from around the world for a live video hookup and discussion focusing on the film Code: Debugging the Gender Gap and the lack of women in tech. The Global Town Hall is just a part of BIFF’s pioneering Call2Action program. Attend a TalkBack after a Call2Action film and engage with filmmakers, presenters and fellow film lovers over concrete ways to translate this energy and passion into action. Audiences, we have an absolute feast for you this year, and we look forward to greeting you throughout the Festival! —Kathy and Robin Beeck SPECIAL THANKS TO: Facebook.com/boulderfilmfest Twitter.com/boulderfilmfest Youtube.com/boulderfilmfest Instagram – boulderfilmfestival B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S David Harrison Robin Beeck Kathy Beeck Annamaria Boehms Alan O’Hashi A DV I S O RY B OA R D Bill Banowsky Jim England Jim Palmer Paula DuPre Pesmen Carolyn Schuham Sophie Walker Sandy Younghans P R O G R A M A DV I S O RY B OA R D Danielle Renfrew Behrens Paula DuPre Pesmen Laura Thielen BIFF1.COM CONTENTS 4 VENUES MAP 5 TI C K E T I N FO 7–9 PA RTI E S MUSIC 11 13 G LO B A L TOW N H A L L 14 YO UTH PAV I L I O N AC TI O N/ TA 15 C ALLKLB2AC KS S Y N O P S E S : 16 –17 THUR S DAY 18 –2 3 FRIDAY 2 4 –32 SATURDAY 3 4 –39 SUNDAY N H A L L S E CO N D 42 ES CTOW REENINGS CINEMA 43 BS CORUELEDNEIRNAGRT S 4 6 – 47 BS CR ROEOEMNFII NEGLSD N G M O NT 50 –51 LO SCREENINGS 54 58 – 61 O U R S TA FF S C H E D U L E AT A GLANCE BIFF1.com // 1 grantors g e n e ro us s u pp o rt prov i d e d by th e fo llowi n g g r a nti n g o rg a n i z ati o n s individual sponsors d i r ec to r’ s c i rc le $1 0,0 0 0 + patti BruCk & Bill spenCer BraD felD & amy BatChelor the tWisteD founDation le a d e r s h i p c i rc le $5 ,0 0 0 + in honor of miChelle keevan halpern Well loveD ltstBs (life’s too short to Be stingy) philanthropieCe Carolyn sChuham sophie Walker sanDy younghans b e n e fac to r $2 , 5 0 0 + Jerry aronson ranDi grassgreen & tim rohrer sCott herrin Carol hunziker tatiana maxWell melisart raDiCal love founDation Beanne & larry rothenBerg the sunshine funD in memory of Bill vielehr fr i e n d o f b i ff (fo b) $1 0 0 0 + CynDa Collins arsenault Jan Burton susan Capitelli CinDy Carlisle JuDith DaCk mary Davis Jim englanD louise & ferD grauer Wayne greenBerg Dory hagan Connie holDen & tk smith Diane israel Dr DaviD JaCkson kris moe Diane & James murphy Jim palmer Julie, kaya & Beryle ranDall sally thorner star Waring & Dan Johnson niCky Wolman & DaviD fulker the Woloson family founDation small business sponsors 8 Days a Week a-loDge avery BreWing BarBara & Company Beau Jo’s pizza Best Buy Blue mountain arts City anD County of BroomfielD anD 1stBank Center 2 Crestone Capital aDvisors Dietze anD Davis DoWntoWn aquarium eCo proDuCts egg strategy elDoraDo Water etunDra restaurant supply fashionista photo // Boulder International Film Festival 2016 // BIFF1.com first uniteD methoDist ChurCh go BoulDer kingsBery Cpas makeup mania mighty fuDge stuDios miller & harrison mountain high applianCe movie haBit photo malone the roost savory spiCe shop shiftBoarD toDD reeD treppeDa’s viDeo station What We love, the Winery SPONSORS PL ATI N U M G O LD M E RCU RY S I LV E R B RO N ZE PA RTN E R R BIFF1.com // 3 ONE HOUR Free Parking in the St Julien or 15th & Pearl parking garages. Conversation moderated by Sue Heilbronner, co-founder of Merge Lane, a start-up accelerator broadening the on-ramp for women-run companies. By 2020, there are going to be 1 million unfilled jobs in coding in the U.S. Although women today comprise half the world’s population and more than half of the U.S. professional workforce, they play only a small role in inventing the technology of tomorrow. Why? Where are women in the start-up world? More importantly, what is lost when we fail to capitalize on the benefits of diverse perspectives? We are missing some of the best and brightest problem-solvers at the table as we innovate our way into an uncertain future. To explore these questions, join our esteemed panel, including Robin Hauser Reynolds, the filmmaker of a thought-provoking new documentary, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap. This film takes a hard look at why more girls and people of color are not seeking careers in computer science. The film CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap will be shown Friday at 10:00am at Boulder Theater. The Global Town Hall will be streamed live from Boulder to the world with the support of Google Hangouts! For free live streaming, to get your free ticket, or to find out how to join the conversation via Google Hangouts, go to biffGlobalTownHall.com. “I hope to inspire change in how women and girls see themselves in the industry…I hope to inspire change in startup culture so they become more welcoming and inviting to women.” ROBIN HAUSER RE YNOLDS The 2016 BIFF Global Town Hall has been generously sponsored by Brad Feld and Amy Batchelor. Through decades of critically acclaimed performances, Dern has acquired the reputation of being one of the most talented and prolific actors of his generation. A celebrated stage actor, Dern was trained by famed director Elia Kazan at The Actor’s Studio and made his film debut in Kazan’s Wild River (1960). In the 1960s, Dern appeared regularly in contemporary Western TV series, as well as Alfred Hitchcock’s television series. Hitchcock was such a fan of Dern that he cast him in both Marnie and Family Plot (Hitchcock’s final film). During the 1960s, Dern went on to work with director Roger Corman and appeared in several of his classic and decade-defining films, including Wild Angels. He received critical success for films such as They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Drive, He Said, and went down in history for his role as Long Hair in The Cowboys in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne. Dern went on to star in such classic films like The King of Marvin Gardens, as well as playing Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (for which he received a Golden Globe nomination). It was his brilliant and powerful performance in Hal Ashby’s Coming Home that earned him both Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. Dern co-starred with Charlize Theron in Monster, one of the most critically acclaimed independent films of all time, and has recently worked with iconic directors Francis Ford Coppola in Twixt and Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained. Most recently, he worked with Tarantino in The Hateful Eight. SUSAN SAR ANDON, E XECUTIVE PRODUCER This film follows three fearless nuns who risk their place in the Catholic Church to follow another higher calling: social justice. When the Vatican investigates and reprimands the sisters—citing their “radical feminism”— they become the spiritual and symbolic center of a struggle for the future of the Catholic Church. The women refuse to back down and continue to challenge the patriarchal system. Will they win the hearts of the new pope and Catholics worldwide? The underfunded women turn to a volunteer group of top computer coders to build a mind-boggling system of “extreme biometrics.” They are attempting the new approach of “Data not Doping” while trying the impossible: win the first U.S. women’s bicycling medal in 20 years.
