WELCOME
We’re proud and excited to present the 12th Annual Boulder International Film Festival,
a wildly successful non-profit festival staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It’s all because
of the huge, film-hip Boulder audiences who show up by the tens of thousands to be part
of the vast world of film, ideas and passions.
Because of BIFF’s tremendous growth, we’ve added three new venues this year: the Boulder
Art Cinema and, for the first time, theaters in Longmont and Broomfield.
For opening night, we’re excited to feature Miss Sharon Jones!, a rousing documentary from
two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple, who follows soul-singing powerhouse Sharon Jones
and her band, the Dap-Kings, through a tumultuous two years of despair and triumph.
Critics have called it “the best musical documentary of the decade.”
Robin Beeck, Executive Director
Kathy Beeck, Festival Director
Fresh from its smash opening-night premiere at Sundance 2016, our closing night film,
Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You, features the comedic imagination that made Lear
the most influential and controversial writer and producer in the history of television.
The highlight of the festival will be a tribute and interview with a member of Hollywood
royalty, Bruce Dern, who is currently appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight,
which has been nominated for three Oscars. Mr Dern has appeared in more than 80 films
and has been nominated for two Oscars.
We are awed this year to present, in person, a man who is a significant part of human
history. Real-life space cowboy Captain Gene Cernan, who stepped off the moon in 1972,
will be in Boulder to talk about his new film The Last Man on the Moon.
On Friday night, BIFF presents CineCHEF, a culinary competition that will pit Boulder’s most
famous chefs in a cooking shootout. These are the renowned culinary wizards who helped
get Boulder its “Foodiest Town” title from Bon Appétit. Chefs will choose a movie theme and
serve small plates based on that theme.
BIFF’s Global Town Hall will bring together festivalgoers and experts from around the world
for a live video hookup and discussion focusing on the film Code: Debugging the Gender
Gap and the lack of women in tech.
The Global Town Hall is just a part of BIFF’s pioneering Call2Action program. Attend a
TalkBack after a Call2Action film and engage with filmmakers, presenters and fellow film
lovers over concrete ways to translate this energy and passion into action.
Audiences, we have an absolute feast for you this year, and we look forward to greeting you
throughout the Festival!
—Kathy and Robin Beeck

Event Center. Partiers can pause for a red carpet photo in front
of the Boulder Magazine step-and-repeat banner, swing to live
music and, of course, enjoy delicious food and libations. Back
by popular demand: Costumed actors/revelers from some of
the best films in movie history will join the party, and a “second line” band will lead us as we parade our way over to the
Boulder Theater for the opening night film!
Once settled into your reserved seat at the theater, enjoy the
evening’s presentation of Miss Sharon Jones! See page 16 for

{ Where Are the Women? }
Plug in to the conversation we’ve all wanted to have.
Conversation moderated by Sue Heilbronner, co-founder of Merge
Lane, a start-up accelerator broadening the on-ramp for women-run
companies.
By 2020, there are going to be 1 million unfilled jobs in coding in
the U.S. Although women today comprise half the world’s population
and more than half of the U.S. professional workforce, they play only
a small role in inventing the technology of tomorrow. Why? Where
are women in the start-up world? More importantly, what is lost
when we fail to capitalize on the benefits of diverse perspectives?
We are missing some of the best and brightest problem-solvers at
the table as we innovate our way into an uncertain future.
To explore these questions, join our esteemed panel, including Robin Hauser Reynolds, the filmmaker of a thought-provoking new documentary, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap. This film takes a hard
look at why more girls and people of color are not seeking careers
in computer science.
The film CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap will be shown Friday
at 10:00am at Boulder Theater.
The Global Town Hall will be streamed live from Boulder to the world

her band the Dap-Kings (who backed Amy Winehouse) have
gained a large and fanatical fan base that continues growing with no end in sight. This film begins a few years ago as
Sharon visits a barber to have her head shaved for treatment

Grammy-nominated album “Give the People What They Want.”
Two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple documents Sharon’s

moments, both sad and triumphant, that put the soul back in
Sharon’s music.

In one of history’s great ironies, computer coding was invented by a woman, Admiral Grace
Hopper, in the 1940s. Yet today, women hold only a tiny percentage of software engineering
jobs. How did this happen? Tech jobs are growing three times faster than our colleges are
producing computer science graduates, and there is a vast well of unfilled software engineering jobs in the U.S. This film takes a hard look at the reasons why more girls and people of
color are not seeking careers in computer science, and opens a dialogue on how cultural
mindsets, stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism
play a role in this mounting crisis. No other film has atI N PE R S O N

The very first word ever transmitted over the Internet was “Lo.” It was supposed to be “login,”
but the system suddenly crashed. What a fitting introduction to a fantastic new world where
we can carry access to all human knowledge in our pocket. From the brilliant mind of Werner
Herzog comes his newest vehicle for exploration, a playful yet chilling examination of our
rapidly interconnecting online lives. Herzog presents a treasure trove of interviews with
strange and beguiling individuals—ranging from Internet pioneers to victims of wireless radiation—and he wonders if the future Internet will ever become aware of itself. Will it dream, as
humans do?Or will it soon cause us—if it hasn’t already—more harm than good?

Friday, 7:15pm, Boulder Theater

Bruce Dern’s tremendous career is made up of playing both modern-day heroes and legendary villains. Through decades of critically
acclaimed performances, Dern has acquired the reputation of being
one of the most talented and prolific actors of his generation.
A celebrated stage actor, Dern was trained by famed director Elia
Kazan at The Actor’s Studio and made his film debut in Kazan’s Wild
River (1960). In the 1960s, Dern appeared regularly in contemporary Western TV series, as well as Alfred Hitchcock’s television series.
Hitchcock was such a fan of Dern that he cast him in both Marnie
and Family Plot (Hitchcock’s final film).
During the 1960s, Dern went on to work with director Roger Corman
and appeared in several of his classic and decade-defining films,
including Wild Angels. He received critical success for films such as
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Drive, He Said, and went down
in history for his role as Long Hair in The Cowboys in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne. Dern went on to star in
such classic films like The King of Marvin Gardens, as well as playing Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (for which he received a
Golden Globe nomination). It was his brilliant and powerful performance in Hal Ashby’s Coming Home that earned him both Academy
Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Dern co-starred with Charlize Theron in Monster, one of the most
critically acclaimed independent films of all time, and has recently
worked with iconic directors Francis Ford Coppola in Twixt and Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained. Most recently, he worked with
Tarantino in The Hateful Eight. Dern won the 2013 Best Actor Award
at the Cannes Film Festival, and garnered another Academy Award
nomination for Best Actor in Nebraska directed by Alexander Payne.

for producing prize-winning musicians, yet
they must get with the times or risk losing
everything. Mother Augustine’s hip young

This film follows three fearless nuns who risk their place in the Catholic Church to follow another higher calling: social justice. When the Vatican investigates and reprimands the sisters—citing their “radical feminism”—they become the spiritual and symbolic center of a
struggle for the future of the Catholic Church. The women refuse to back down and continue
to challenge the patriarchal system. Will they win the hearts of the new pope and Catholics

documentary.” I N D I E W I R E
After 23 years on death row in Pennsylvania, convicted murderer Nick Yarris petitioned the court to be executed. But in
his four-day interview with director David
Sington (In The Shadow of the Moon, BIFF

his account with such rehearsed eloquence
that we remain uneasy, if not suspicious.
Lingering in the shadows is another question: What was his crime? Then a moment
comes when the prison narrative takes a
dramatic turn: Sington himself starts to
show some of his cards, answers come and
emotion brews right up to the film’s final
shocking twist.

What if you are shooting a documentary about an aging—but still funny—‘60s radical and he
announces that, at the end of the film, he will kill himself as his “final political act?” In the
1960s, Mayer Vishner, along with Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, began the Youth International Party (The Yippies), who used humor and sarcasm as tools against the Vietnam War.
But why have some of them committed suicide? What begins with director Justin Schein’s
simple curiosity about Mayer’s intellect, values and the rebellious legacy of his counter-cultural generation turns into a dark yet profoundly humorous journey through what Mayer references as his “existential project.” Directed by Justin Schein

On April 28, 1945, the eyes and film cameras of the world were on Malmö, Sweden,
as thousands of survivors of German concentration camps took their first steps of
freedom. In making this surprising documentary, director Magnus Gertten’s research led him to the names of many of
these joyous, confused refugees. Now, 70
years later, they see this film for the first
time and are able to tell their stories and
the overwhelming happiness they felt that
day. With a poignant juxtaposition, we are
then transported to current-day Italy where
people and emergency services are waiting
at an Italian dock for some of the millions
of today’s refugees from Syria. And once
again, the people streaming off those boats
are anonymous faces without names.
Published in 1943, “THE LITTLE PRINCE” is a universal and timeless work which is among the
most sold and translated books in the world with over 145 million copies in more than 270
languages and dialects. Seventy years after its publication, “THE LITTLE PRINCE” has been
adapted for the first time as an animated feature film. With an esteemed Oscar-award winning international cast featuring Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, Marion Cotillard
and Benicio Del Toro, THE LITTLE PRINCE will enchant audiences on March 18, 2016.

Brookner’s lap, at the age of six, while his uncle directed an important scene with Madonna and Randy Quaid on the set of the

died a year later of AIDS at age 34. At the time, Brookner was best
known for his debut film, Burroughs: The Movie, and, 20 years later,
Aaron Brookner made an astonishing discovery in William S. Burroughs’ bunker: 300 cans of film, long-lost footage of Burroughs,
Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg, Brion Gysin, Paula Court, Terry Southern,

HUNTWATCH
THE MUSIC OF STRANGERS:
YO-YO MA AND THE SILK ROAD
ENSEMBLE
USA, Feature Documentary, 2015, 88 min
Narrated by Ryan Reynolds
Tragically, the brutal baby-seal-clubbers are back in full force, and
this time they’re fighting dirty. In the 1980s, appalled by the annual
baby seal hunt, Brian Davies started a movement to end it. He
raised money to bring media out to document the hunt on the remote ice floes with images of cruel, bloody slaughters, often while
the mother seal looked on helplessly. This led to international outrage and the hunt was shut down. But now, under massive lobbying
by the fur industry, Canadian politicians have revived the hunt. Brian
Davies is now nearly 80, but a young, tough activist has taken up
the torch. Sheryl Fink is leading the hunt watch and fighting to completely end the commercial seal hunt, once and for all. But the industry is fighting back.

The Music of Strangers shares the very funny Yo-Yo Ma, a giant in the world of Western classical music, putting Beethoven
aside to spend time with his multicultural Silk Road Ensemble.
He gathers virtuosos from around the world, of very different
traditions, and puts them in rooms together to see what kind
of music they’d make together. This film, by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (Troubadours), is full of transcendent
music—including Ma’s performance of a solo Bach piece in the

DARK HORSE
United Kingdom, Feature Documentary, 2015, 85 min
Set in a former mining village in Wales, Dark Horse is the inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men’s club who
decide to take on the elite “sport of kings” and breed themselves a
racehorse. Raised on a slagheap allotment, their foal grows into an
unlikely champion, beating the finest thoroughbreds in the land before suffering a near-fatal accident. Nursed back to health by the
love of his owners—for whom he’s become a source of inspiration
and hope—he makes a remarkable recovery, returning to the track
for a heart-stopping comeback.
Based on the life of legendary Estonian
fencing master Endel Nelis, this beautiful movie follows his escape from Stalin’s
secret police in the 1950s and finds him
teaching small-town children in a remote
Estonian coastal village, only to realize that
this is exactly what he wants to do in life.
The young Nelis founds a program for aspiring young swordsmen that still thrives
today, but he immediately earns the envy
and anger of a local school principal who
starts investigating Nelis’ background under a cloud of suspicion and paranoia
fostered by the postwar Soviet occupation.

Fifty years ago, the name “Kitty Genovese” became synonymous
with urban apathy after news that she was savagely stabbed to
death on a New York City street while 38 witnesses did nothing.
Forty years later, her younger brother Bill decides to find the truth
buried beneath the story. What if Kitty’s story is an urban myth? In

NORMAN LEAR:
JUST ANOTHER
VERSION OF YOU
USA, Feature Documentary, 2015, 91 min
Opening night film at Sundance 2016
At age 93, Norman Lear is as vital and engaged
as ever. This stylish and imaginative film crackles
with Lear’s comedy and indelible characters that
made him the most influential—and often the
most controversial—creator, writer and producer
in the history of television. This film’s brightly assembled celebration of the veteran showman
holds up a mirror to today’s American television,
asking if it’s addressing issues of difference and
prejudice as directly (and daringly) as Lear’s
shows, such as “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” Lear also has some great stories about the
second act of his life, his founding of advocacy
group People For The American Way.

Sonita Alizadeh, an 18-year-old rapper, is loud, angry, hugely talented and unapologetic—and hell-bent on becoming the next Rihanna.
The problem is that her parents in Iran had agreed to make her a
bride and sell her to a new family for $9,000. This movie is a tale
of how Sonita, who at the start of the film, was an undocumented
Afghan refugee in Iran, somehow ends up in Utah. Her story is amazing and convoluted as she tries to overcome all manner of familial
and bureaucratic hurdles. S U BT I T L E D

changed by this novel. This movie is about 16-year-old Jamie
Schwartz, unpopular in school, who after a series of hostile incidents
runs away to search for the book’s reclusive author, J.D. Salinger
(played by Chris Cooper). On the way, Deedee Gorlin, a local girl,
picks him up and their roller-coaster odyssey to find Salinger is a

LANDFILL HARMONIC USA/Paraguay/Norway/Brazil, Feature Documentary,
2015, 84 min Winner of an Audience Award at SXSW

Kids living in a vast slum built on a landfill in Paraguay create an orchestra. Their
music teacher trains a local handyman to build tunable instruments out of trash—a
one-gallon syrup can becomes a violin and a five-gallon can becomes a viola—and
after months of training, they develop a remarkably professional sound. Then, improbably, they are invited to go on tour with heavy-metal band Megadeth. But their homes
in Cateura, Paraguay are suddenly devastated by floods. Will they be able to rebuild?
