Introduction
Music, technologies and brands make up today’s music business ecosystem.
midem is the place where music makers, cutting-edge technologies, brands & talent come
together to enrich the passionate relationship between people & music, transform audience
engagement & form new business connections.
A word from Bruno Crolot, midem‟s Director:
“midem used to be more of a B2B music market with what I would call the regular music industry:
the publishers, producers, labels and distributors. Today we are following the evolution of the
music business and we definitely want to target a much broader ecosystem that includes brands,
technologies and artists. We are not moving away from music. I think we are moving with the
music business to a broader eco-system, where music is the glue and where technologies are
used by brands, artists and labels to re-engage with audiences on a direct to audience basis.”
Music, brands & technologies interact together in new ways:
 Six of the top ten Twitter accounts are musicians
 A third of all YouTube videos are music-related
 74% of music fans and 67% of labels agree that more fans will buy directly from the artists (Music
Support Here, 2011)
 Over 2.9M artists now meet, engage & transact over online communities*
 97% of people think that music can strengthen their brand (Sounds Like Branding, 2010)
 91% of consumers accept or are positive about brand involvement in music entertainment and
culture (Frukt, 2011)

Visionary Monday - Engaging with Audiences in a World Connected by Music
Using music to engage emotionally with audiences has always been a key marketing strategy.
The shift from push to pull is creating both challenges and opportunities for music, tech & brands to
engage consumers in new ways – and to start lasting, profitable and loyal relationships with them.
At Visionary Monday, artists, industry leaders, marketing & technology experts share their insights
and discoveries of new innovative ways to reach, engage with and monetize audiences, on related
key issues:.
 What are the new rules of audience engagement and monetisation?
 How to build an artist career as a brand? What are the most sustainable models to achieve it?
 What are the content strategies and tools to engage with your consumers and raise brand
loyalty?
 Is the technology the future of music or is music becoming the future of technology?

She was not destined to become an artist. “I grew up in a really little town in Belgium,
and none of my family was into music,” reveals the twenty ‐one year old, with refreshing
sincerity. Her first album is ambitious: a smart melting pot between electric rock, organic
hip‐hop and soul‐funk. Like Janelle Monae or Aloe Blacc, Selah Sue belongs to a new
generation for whom music has no boundaries.

Much has been written about Imany over the past couple of months and she has
made multiple appearances on both television and radio. But musical success has
come neither easily nor quickly for the 30-year-old, who said in a recent interview that
it was, "A dream come true" but one which "had taken some time to fulfill."The result
was the album "The shape of a broken heart", one which has brought about plenty of
comparisons with the Grammy award-winning US singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman.
And that's largely because of Imany's resonant and powerful voice.

For those of you who don't know anything about Soulwax or 2manydjs....Their musical
history is checkered with highlights. The sons of a noted Belgian radio DJ, the pair formed
a rock band named Soulwax, who released several acclaimed records and toured
extensively. At this time the brothers were also concurrently DJing under the names The
Flying Dewaele Brothers & 2manydjs to rapturous response both in clubs, on Belgian
radio and beyond. In 2002 their massively acclaimed debut mix album 2manydjs - As
heard on Radio Soulwax Volume 2 was released on an unsuspecting world. It
changed the face of dance mix compilations forever simply by splicing
hundreds of rock, electro, dance, hip hop and other classics from the depths
of their vaults together. It was also fun!!! And somehow they had managed to
do what so many had failed to do previously - bring that fun and chaos from
the club into your home.
