Central Branch Downtown Youngstown D.D. & Velma Davis Family Branch Camp Fitch 2009 The YMCA of Youngstown, OH Annual Report The New Trinity Chapel at Camp Fitch T Dear A note from our YMCA Board President and Chief Executive Officer ® YMCA Members Administrative Staff Seated: Thomas Grantonic, Davis Family Branch Director, Judith Neyman, Administrative Assistant, Kenneth L. Rudge, Chief Executive Officer, Kathleen Thomas, Director of Business and Finance Standing: Brian Rupe, Camp Fitch Director, Gregory Kleeh, Director of Financial Development, Michael F. Shaffer, Central Branch Director he year 2009 was an historic, exciting, but challenging one for the YMCA of Youngstown. Over the last 18 months our country has been in a recession, a very volatile economic period. This severe economic downturn that is not likely to be fully resolved in the near future has caused the Y management staff and our Board to be mindful that the “YMCA” mission is not in recession. Many of our members and the Mahoning Valley youth and families needed the YMCA programs and services more than ever before. Our YMCA continued to respond to the needs of children and families struggling to meet the challenges of today’s economic realities. Our Board approved a new policy that provides for Y members that lost their jobs by offering a three-month free membership and also to expand our financial assistance program at all three branches. Our doors remain open to military families by providing free memberships to immediate families of a soldier serving overseas. In 2009 the Youngstown YMCA Association provided about $900,000 in scholarship assistance that carries out our Christian mission by providing quality programming and events for the whole community. Prayer, hard work, and good management have helped our Y branches navigate through this difficult time and we’re pleased that we have continued with our long range plan and went ahead with our $5.7 million, 30,000 square foot expansion project at the D.D. & Velma Davis Family Branch, Camp’s $780,000 capital expansion project with the dedication of the new Trinity Chapel in August, and $150,000 in capital improvements to our downtown Central Branch. These projects were made possible, in part, through generous gifts of local private donors, businesses and foundations such as the D.D. & Velma Davis Family Foundation which donated $1,000,000 towards the expansion of our Davis Family Branch. The Berlin Family Foundation donated a gift of $330,000 and the Boardman Steel Fabrication, Ltd./David Deibel donated $296,000 for the Chapel project. These three major capital projects will provide us the opportunities to expand programs that will enrich the lives of our members, and strengthen the fabric of our community by building strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The YMCA engaged 22,571 members, 35,413 program participants and 11,534 campers in 2009, nearly half under the age of 18. Programs and services focused on the holistic development of children and youth, family strengthening and health and well-being for all. We are forever grateful to the tremendous dedication of our staff, John H. Yerian, Jr., board and volunteers who embody the mission of the YMCA and Board of Trustees, President work tirelessly to help us impact so many lives in our community. A special thank you to the hundreds of campaigners who assisted chairman Paul Harkey and Janice JanJanin as they worked hard to surpass the 2009 Strong Kids Campaign goal and raised $165,000. The annual Strong Kids Campaign, United Way allocations, foundation grants, capital gifts and Heritage Club Endowment programs are essential to ensure the long term viability of the Youngstown YMCA. We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for all your help and support and for God’s blessings that have enabled us to remain an Kenneth L. Thomas J Lodge This year’s YMCA Volunteer of the Year is Ms. Leah Sabo. Leah has been a long time YMCA member at the Central Y, starting out in 1980 when she was employed at St Elizabeth’s Hospital. She competed for the St E’s Community Cup team for 13 years and was on their winning Tug of War team for several years. Many of us know her as “D’Nelle’s Mom”, because of her famous daughter’s standout basketball career which she followed avidly. Since retiring from St E’s as a medical administrator in 2002 she has been a fixture at the YMCA. Every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. she runs the Youth Basketball League Snack Bar, and her smiling face is the first person that 1,200 kids (and their families) see. Leah says that, “This is my opportunity to tell every parent how proud they should be of their kid!” Her efforts in support of D’Nelle’s basketball leagues, all as a volunteer, totaled over 600 hours in 2009 alone and she’s been doing this for many years! All of the proceeds from the snack bar go to the “Strong Kids Campaign”, helping needy youth and families with the cost of Y memberships and programs. And for many years, Leah has been an active campaigner, raising thousands of dollars by soliciting businesses all over town, friends, and fellow Y members. She brings her “campaign folder” with her everywhere she goes and is not afraid to ask anyone to support the YMCA. She began a new career as a realtor with Coldwell Banker in 2002 and has used many of those new contacts to increase the fund-raising that she does on behalf of the YMCA. Leah is a woman that loves the Y, its members, its programs and its mission. Congratulations to our 2009 Volunteer of the Year, Ms. Leah Sabo! ful ake a joy the shout to s! our lan0d0:1 y l l a d r Lo Psalms 1 M 2009 Highlights Association • The YMCA’s marketing committee determined that a complete overhaul of both the Camp Fitch and YMCA of Youngstown websites should be undertaken. Completed last spring, the Fitch website is now much easier to navigate and includes video and increased photo capabilities. Started in the fall of 2009, the new site covering all branches will be completed in April 2010. With easy navigation being the top priority, the site will be user-friendly and will include program schedules and updates as well as on-line registration. A video tour of both Davis and Central will also be a key feature. • Our YMCA is inclusive, welcoming all regardless of age, gender, race, faith, ability, or economic status. The “Y” provides services for any youth, adult, or family who desires to participate regardless of their ability to pay. I think the Y is the supporting force behind the families of tomorrow.” Jimmie & Crystal Rodgers— YMCA members “The YMCA is an important part of our program. Our clients come with smiles on their faces—they can’t wait to “I had a very difficult pre-teen son who was a little rebellious and being raised by a single mom. Nothing reached him. And then, the Y. This was a safe place for him and me to be.” Patty Nelis—YMCA member “This partnership with the YMCA helps our kids build self-esteem and confidence. It gives them an opportunity that they might not otherwise ever have.” get here. Without the support of the community, our program wouldn’t be here today.” Tim Sturgiss— Day Program Instructor, Purple Cat “Camp Fitch affected my life because it opened my eyes to other things, had me meet new people. I consider Camp Fitch a second family. Receiving financial support made a big difference.” Chris Ross— YMCA Lifeguard “Without the Y and the influence and the memories I have and Camp Fitch and the whole organization molding me, there’s no way I’d be sitting here right now.” Adam Brown— YMCA member Mrs. Cindy Roussos— McGuffey Elementary School Multihandicapped Classes Youngstown City Schools “I am going to tell you about the many great things that go on at Camp Fitch. It is an awesome place to go in the summer. To me, it is like a vacation. My foster mom Bonnie does a lot for me and I really appreciate her for that. One of the best things she did for me was letting me go to Camp Fitch. I know she could never afford to send me and my brother Billy and my foster sister Elizabeth to Camp. She checked into a scholarship for us and we were accepted. I never got to do anything like that before. I am very thankful to the people who donate money to let kids like me go to camp. If they only knew how much fun we have and all that we learn and talking about God, they would want to go, too… It was the best time of my life.” —Crystal Pietz 2009 Financial Report *YMCA of Youngstown, Ohio Association’s 2009 Financial Report Operating Revenue—Association Membership Dues . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $4,025,660 . . . . . . 46.9% Program Fees . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,770,935 . . . . . . 32.3% Other Revenue . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 399,813 . . . . . . . . . . . 4.7% Contributions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 341,001 . . . . . . . . . . . 4.0% Sales . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 159,300 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.9% Government Grants . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 143,704 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.7% Investments . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 129,057 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.5% United Way . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 87,209 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.0% Intra “Y” Allocation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 519,200 . . . . . . . . . . . 6.0% Total Revenue . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $8,575,879 . . . . . . . . . 100% Operating Expense Salary/Benefits/Taxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4,044,396 . . . . . . . . . 47.2% Building/Equipment . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,734,510 . . . . . . . . . 20.2% Supplies/Camp Food . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 889,929 . . . . . . . . . 10.4% R/R & Bldg/Land . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 616,668 . . . . . . . . . . . 7.2% Contract Services . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 213,021 . . . . . . . . . . . 2.5% Liability Insurance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 185,450 . . . . . . . . . . . 2.2% Telephone, Postage & Travel Conference, . . . . . . 151,717 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.8% Training & Financing Printing/Promotions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 129,418 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.5% Payment/National Dues . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 91,100 . . . . . . . . . . . 1.0% Intra “Y” Allocation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 519,200 . . . . . . . . . . . 6.0% Total Expense . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $8,575,409 . . . . . . . . . 100% Branch Report Income Metro . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $641,257 . . . .
