Wisconsin. The county offers many exciting and affordable

lakes and streams, historical sites, cultural activities and
abundant shopping, there is something for everyone.
Chippewa County boasts many towns, villages, and cities
all with their own unique special attractions. Stop in
Bloomer for some to-die-for pies at the bakery or a pizza
at Fat Boys; stop in Chippewa Falls for a tour of a brewery
or to catch the latest movie; or take to Lake Holcombe for
a chance at catching a Muskie or to ski its wonderful
waters. Not the active type of person? Scattered
throughout the county you’ll find many small shops
boasting natural and organic soaps, lotions, alpaca
products, fresh maple syrup, fresh squeaky cheese curds,
honey and everything in between.
If you are looking for some great area history, Chippewa
County has the last standing pulpwood stacker in the
world. Standing 178 feet it can be seen for miles coming
into the city of Cornell. While there, jump on the Old
Abe State Trail for a picturesque ride on the newly repaved
19.5 mile trail. Stand on the spot that’s half-way between
the North Pole and the equator with a visit to the Lion’s
Park in Cadott. While there visit the Veteran’s tribute off
Hwy 29 and Hwy 27.
Not a weekend goes by that there isn’t a festival, fair, art
show, or cultural activity taking place. Two nationally
acclaimed music festivals, Country Fest & Rock Fest,
along with the ever-popular, Northern Wisconsin State
Fair, bring many top name performers to the area. Other
area events include: community fairs, Oktoberfest, Lions
Sturgeon Festival, Stanley Rodeo, along with many more.

Approximately four square miles
of rolling hills come alive with
apple blossoms in the spring, wine
in the summer and, of course,
apples in the fall. Six apple
orchards make up this area eight
miles east of Chippewa Falls.
Each orchard offers something
unique to travelers from near and
far. Fresh apple pies, cider
doughnuts, gift shops, wine and
fresh pressed cider are among the
treasures to be found. Orchards

Silent Sports
Chippewa County provides
visitors and residents various areas
to enjoy silent sports throughout
all seasons of the year. Bike the
Old Abe State Trail or Duncan
Creek Trail, paddle on one of the
449 lakes and streams, put down
your stake while camping in one
of our county or state parks, or
ride horses along the 22-mile Hay
Meadow Horse Trail or along a
portion of the Old Abe State
Trail.
When the weather turns cooler,
take to the Hickory Ridge
Recreation area for 27 miles of ski
trails groomed for traditional or
skate skiing.
With an abundance of trails,

Yellowstone Trail
The Yellowstone Trail was the first transcontinental automobile
highway in the United States. In 1912 it began as an effort to provide
good roads from South Dakota to the great tourist attraction, the
Yellowstone Park. It soon expanded to become a road running
through all of the 13 northern tier states, “from Plymouth Rock,
Massachusetts to Puget Sound on the Pacific Ocean.” The trail was
marked by bright yellow markers with a black arrow. The Yellowstone
Trail attracted so many visitors that when the highway department
numbered state roads in 1918, the Yellowstone Trail and its yellow
road markers were allowed to remain.
Today, thanks to the efforts of Chippewa County and the Chippewa
County Historical Society Historic Marker Committee, the same
Yellowstone Trail logo signs point the way through Chippewa
County.

Bloomer, located off of STH 53, offers the best in small-town
Americana, offering food and services of every description to visitors
and area residents. Bloomer serves as the hub of a large agricultural
area and is the gateway city serving residents and visitors to the Blue
Diamond recreation area to the north. Bloomer features specialty
merchants known for breads, pies, and meats. Fine medical facilities
serve visitors and residents, and classic churches define the skyline.
Bloomer offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, from its
historic annual speed rope jump competition to several parks and
walking trails, an 18-hole golf course, and a beautiful lake in the
center of town. Nearby lakes offer boating, fishing, snowmobiling,
hiking, and hunting opportunities, as well as resorts and
campgrounds. Visitors can visit the historical museum in the summer
and attend the annual community fair in August.

The Village of Boyd-nicknamed “The Friendly Town”- is nestled
among the farms and woodlots in the gently rolling hills along State
Highway 29, east of Chippewa Falls. The many local businesses
meet the needs of area residents and visitors. The community also
features Lotz Park, with a lighted ball diamond, volleyball and
tennis courts, pavilions and play areas. Historic St. Joseph’s Church,
built in 1928, has spectacular German stained glass windows. Its
prominent twin steeples have become a landmark. Boyd’s 680
residents invite everyone to the community’s Ringelspiel Days
Festival on Memorial Day weekend with sports tournaments, a
carnival, parade, and live music. Late August, the village hosts an
event with an outdoor dance and free sweet corn. In early
December, Boyd hosts a pancake breakfast with Santa and Mrs.
Claus, horse-drawn wagon rides and skating.
Cadott, “half way between the Equator and the North Pole,” is in
the heart of Wisconsin’s Vacation Crossroads. Located at the
junctions of State Highways 27 and 29, at the west end of the
Partner 29 corridor along the Old Yellowstone Trail. Cadott was
named after Jean Baptiste Cadotte, the son of a fur trader who
established a fur trading post here in the early 1800’s. The first
permanent settler was Robert Marriner who built a log cabin and
sawmill in 1865, beginning the lumbering and mill industries which
served as the foundation of Cadott’s first growth. Today you will
find a wide variety of places to visit, including Riverview Park which
has interpretive signs providing an insight into the unique rock
formations along the Yellow River, the Cadott Area Historical
Museum and Baker School, the ZCBJ Lodge Hall and Bohemian
Cemetery which are listed on the State and National Registries of
Historic Places, the Wisconsin Veterans Tribute, good restaurants, a
cheese house, a motel and businesses along Main Street.

Cornell
Nestled on the banks of the scenic Chippewa River off of Hwy 178,
the City of Cornell is a center for area history and year-round
recreation. The city has the only remaining pulpwood stacker,
located in the Mill Yard Park, site of the Cornell Visitors Center
and Native American Museum (open May through October).
Cornell is also a trailhead for the 20-mile Old Abe State Trail for
biking, walking, snowmobiling, and horseback riding. Brunet Island
State Park offers camping and other outdoor recreation. Cornell also
has links to Wisconsin’s extensive snowmobile trail network. Cornell
is home to several community festivals throughout the year:
fireworks on July 3, a car show, Chippewa River Rendezvous, and an
annual craft and art fair.

Lake Holcombe recreation area is a place for all seasons. Spring and
summer is the time for fishing and recreation on the Lake
Holcombe Flowage (approximately 3,600 acres, with 120 miles of
shoreline). The summer also offers plenty of opportunities to tour
the 3,400+ acres of public forest land, hike the Ice Age Trail, or go
horseback riding in the county forest.

Perched on the banks of the scenic Chippewa River, Jim Falls offers a
small-town feel full of local history and year-round outdoor
recreational activities. The Old Abe State Trail can be accessed in Jim
Falls, welcoming bikers, snowmobilers, horseback riders, and hikers.
Xcel Energy’s Jim Falls Hydropower Plant is the largest hydropower
producing facility in the Midwest. Boat access to the Old Abe
Flowage and the upper end of Lake Wissota provides excellent
angling opportunities for walleye, muskie, small-mouth bass, and
catfish. The Old Abe War Eagle memorial statue commemorates
Wisconsin’s feathered Civil War hero. The Chippewa River along
Highway 178 just north of Jim Falls offers a view of the original river
channel, a hiking trail with spectacular displays of spring wildflowers,
an area of study for geology students, scheduled flow releases for
kayakers, and an opportunity to view Wisconsin’s living fossil, the
lake sturgeon.
New Auburn welcomes visitors headed for nearby lakes, forests, and
trails of the Blue Diamond Recreation Area. Resorts, campgrounds,
restaurants, and services are available. Visitors also come to see the
Chippewa Moraine State Recreation Area, with its more than 3,300
acres of ridges and lakes carved by the glacier. A Visitors Center
provides information on the stagnant ice glacial features that dominate
the landscape and offers access to the thousand-mile Ice Age National
Scenic Trail, whether for long-distance hiking or a 4.5-mile walk
around the lake-studded Circle Trail. The adjacent Chippewa County
Forest provides hunting, hiking, fishing, and snowmobile opportunities.

Michael Perry, who describes life in this small town and has inspired
visitors to come see the landmarks that play a role in his books.

Stanley is experiencing a “Rural Renaissance.” The city is home to
Ace Ethanol, Wisconsin’s first large-scale producer of ethanol, and
the Stanley Correctional Institution, a medium security facility
housing 1500 inmates and employing 405.
The community is known for Chapman Park, with its annual rodeo,
modern campgrounds, elk park, ball fields, volleyball, tennis and
basketball courts. A recent addition to the community is the
Veterans Memorial Park located in downtown Stanley. Otter Lake
recreation area is seven miles north of Stanley and is just one of the
areas offering fishing and hunting opportunities and recreational
trails. The Stanley Area Historical Society Museum draws visitors
from near and far. The community has a pool and fitness center at
the high school.
Stanley has a motel on the county snowmobile trail and is also close
to unique downtown stores, restaurants, businesses and professional

Chippewa County has 449 lakes totaling 20,027 acres and ranging from one to 6,300 acres. Lake Wissota, the largest lake, is an
impoundment of the Chippewa River east of Chippewa Falls. Although many of the smaller lakes do not support much of a
fishery, they offer solitude and serenity for those wanting to get away. Thirty-eight lakes have developed public access and most
are listed in the table on the opposite page. Many lakes provide excellent angling opportunities. The Chippewa River and its
flowage offer some of the best and diverse angling opportunities in the county.
Chippewa County also provides 81 miles of trout fishing opportunities in 24 classified trout streams. Seventy-seven miles of
these streams are Class 1 trout water.

The line, built in 1897, operated for

Old Abe State Trail - Sharon Shepard
Old Abe State Trail
This paved 19.5 mile trail connects Lake Wissota
State Park in Chippewa Falls to Brunet Island State
Park in Cornell. An old railroad grade, it has been
developed into a trail for bicyclists, snowmobilers,
hikers, horseback riders and in-line skaters. Begin
your trail experience at either the trail head on 97th
Avenue (junction of Hwy S & Hwy O) in Cornell at
the Mill Yard Park, or at the Town Hall parking lot in
Jim Falls. The trail from Jim Falls to Cornell was
repaved in the fall of 2012 and the trail from
Chippewa Falls to Jim Falls was repaved in 2013. A
state bike trail pass is required for people over 16.

Duncan Creek Trail
A five mile paved loop through Chippewa Falls ideal
for biking, in-line skating, and walking. This trail
connects to the Old Abe State Trail northeast of
CTH I. Portions of this trail are shared with motor
vehicles. No pass is required.
Hickory Ridge Recreation Area
This eleven mile off-road mountain biking trail winds
through the quiet and scenic oak and aspen forests.
This trail consists of 3 challenging loops and 4 trails
east of Bloomer. No pass is required.
Riverview Reserve
2.5 mile paved and unpaved trail that cris-crosses
through the reserve located on the east side of
Seymour Cray Blvd in Chippewa Falls, providing
great viewing opportunities of the Xcel Energy Dam.
This trail connects to the Duncan Creek Trail and
Old Abe State Trail. No pass is required.

CORNELL, WIS. is a historic paper-mill town which
hosts the only known pulpwood stacker in the world.
It was used in Cornell from 1912 until 1972. It now
stands as a monument to the logging industry that laid
