Year In Review Support for the Shelter and Beyond Your Donations Have a Real Impact Every Day! The Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center: A Leader in Live-Release A 90% live exit rate is almost unheard of for a municipal animal shelter. So how does the Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center do it? With help from the DASF Adoption Subsidy Fund. Our Adoption Subsidy Fund lowers the adoption cost of “harder to place pets” such as older or special needs pets, and gives them a second chance to find their forever home. Shelter staff may use this fund to motivate adopters when the shelter has met max capacity. In ten years, the Denton Animal Shelter’s live-release rate (number of pets adopted or rescued) has gone from 47.2% to over 90%. We are proud of the strong partnership between DASF and the City of Denton Animal Services Department. Together, with your help, we can save more Denton area animals. 1 $25 subsidizes one vaccine package $30 provides one shelter pet adoption subsidy $60 helps cover emergency vet bills $100 cares for a Safe Haven pet $200 provides critical shelter supplies Success Stories Pink What do you do when your pet is in pain and you’re facing huge medical bills yourself? Alexandria, a Certified Nursing Assistant and her husband, Robert, experienced this very problem after Alexandria had a surgery to remove cancerous cells from her cervix. Due to her inability to have children, she loves her animals like family so she was devastated when her beloved pit bull Pink, had a mass and infection in his paw that, if not removed, would have led to amputation or worse. However, thanks to both generous DASF donors and the Emergency Medical Fund, Pink received the critical surgery he needed. Alexandra expressed the assistance from DASF “meant the world to her family” and that she is happy to report that Pink is doing great! Pudge When Pudge, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, came to the Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center he was in desperate need of some love and TLC. Volunteers and staff knew his physical wounds from being a bait dog for dog fighting would heal, but they worried his emotional wounds would take longer. So imagine their surprise when Pudge displayed an instant love for people. “He is wiggly, happy, and loves to give kisses” Amy Poskey, a shelter volunteer commented. Because of his past, he was very wary of other dogs. A case of kennel cough put him in isolation while his wounds healed and made the job of finding him a home even more difficult. Thankfully, the DASF Adoption Subsidy Fund exists for “harder to adopt” pets at the shelter who require a bit more incentive to find their perfect family. Cole and his family loved Pudge the minute they saw him and brought him to his forever home full of love and toys. Frosty At just two years old, Frosty was only months away from complete blindness due to rapid juvenile cataracts. He could not see his sister Molly or the rest of his loving family. The cataracts were dangerous and caused a great deal of painful pressure behind his eyes. Frosty’s family worked hard to provide the best care for their pets but like most families, they simply could not afford the $3,000 it would cost for the critical surgery he needed. Thanks to the generous donors of the DASF Emergency Medical Fund, Frosty was able to receive vision-restoring surgery on both eyes. Carmen, Frosty’s owner, stated she saw a “vast improvement in Frosty’s energy and outlook.” Frosty now has a renewed sense of joy in seeing and playing with his family. 2 Year In Review In Their Own Words A Message from The Executive Director “Project Safe Haven, made possible by our partnership with the DASF, removes a critical barrier that prevents families from leaving a violent home. Many women will stay in an abusive relationship out of fear of leaving their pets behind. Pets are our family members, and when survivors of abuse and sexual assault know there is a safe place for their furry friends, they are able to concentrate on their own growth and healing, empowering our clients to take huge strides to move families to the path of confidence. At DCFOF, we are so very grateful that DASF has provided the support and guidance to make this project a success, and we look forward to working together for many years to come.” This year marks an exciting milestone for the Denton Animal Support Foundation as we celebrate ten years of saving more Denton area animals. These past ten years we have seen both the culture surrounding Denton’s pet population and pet ownership in general change for the better. Our pets are our family and DASF is working to educate the next generation of pet guardians while helping the thousands of homeless, ill, and abused animals our community still sees every year. – Rebekah Woodland, Denton County Friends of the Family “The Texas Coalition for Animal Protection appreciates how hard DASF has worked to make Denton a better place for pets and people. It’s been our pleasure to partner with them through quarterly vaccine events as well as further discounted spay/neuter specials at our Denton location. We appreciate the grant funding we have received from DASF as it has furthered our mission and helped spay/neuter hundreds of Denton pets. Denton is lucky to have such a hard-working and dedicated group of people focused on making a real, lasting difference!” This past year, DASF has worked to expand our partnerships and services to pets and the people who love them in the Denton community. While we continue to provide grants to key partner organizations in the Denton area, an increasing number of individuals continue to seek emergency assistance through our Safe Haven (learn more on page 6) and Vet Assistance programs. – Stacey Schumacher, Texas Coalition for Animal Protection Providing assistance to the City of Denton’s Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center has always been our top priority. We assist by providing adoption subsidies, medical expense funds, funding for shelter supplies, and by raising awareness of adoptable pets through the 43,000 followers engaged on our social media sites. Not only was the foundation the fuel behind the creation of our new facility but they have also continued to assist us with adoption subsidy funds, critical shelter supplies, and medical funds for surgeries or specialized medical care needed for sick or injured pets. It is also partly because of DASF that we are able to maintain a higher than average live release rate due to the ability to lower our adoption fee when the shelter becomes overcrowded. These provisions not only help the shelter and the animals but they help the citizens who have faith in us and come to our facility for the newest member of their family.” With gratitude, Rebecca Finberg Executive Director, Denton Animal Support Foundation – Gayla Nelsen, Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center 3 New and Returning Events Third Annual Presented by The Purrrfect Bite, a gourmet progressive dinner around the historic Denton Square took place on November 3, 2015 and raised nearly $16,000 to help save more Denton area animals. Join us on the Denton Square that evening to get your family photo taken and make a donation! 4 Year In Review Raising Funds for Denton Animals Lights of Love Presented by We often receive donations during the holidays in tribute to a special pet or person. We decided it was a perfect opportunity to bring the community together for a holiday open house at the Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center. During Lights of Love, the community purchased lights and wreaths in honor or memory of someone special. An open house took place at the conclusion of the campaign, just in time to bring holiday cheer to all the pets hoping for a New Year with a new family. Be on the lookout for Lights of Love 2016 taking place in late November through early December. Bring your Christmas cheer to the Lights of Love open house on December 7, 2016. Wine and Whiskers returned this year to Oakmont Country Club on April 28, 2016 and raised nearly $20,000 for the pets we serve. This delicious event is a community favorite and we were thrilled to bring it back! Guests bid on over 80 auction items and feasted on gourmet bites with paired wine. 5 New Programs New Ways to Care for Pets and the People Who Love Them A Safe Escape from Domestic Abuse According to the American Humane Association, upwards of 40% of domestic violence victims will not leave an abusive situation for fear that the abuser will hurt or kill a pet. Denton Animal Support Foundation has partnered with the Denton County Friends of the Family and the City of Denton Police Department to enable victims of domestic violence to leave dangerous situations without leaving beloved pets behind. DASF has committed to paying for the boarding services of pets of domestic violence victims who seek shelter at the DCFOF facility. Emergency Vet Assistance The cost of an emergency vet bill can often mean the difference between life and death for a pet. Our goal has been and always will be to help keep pets in loving homes. Over the past several years, DASF has helped individuals seeking assistance for costly emergency vet bills so that they can keep their pets happy and healthy. In 2015, DASF formalized this program and as funds are available, we assist pet owners with everything from office examinations and prescriptions to life-saving surgical procedures. Hope for Tomorrow: The Shelter Endowment Fund Shelter for Today – Hope for Tomorrow was the theme of DASF’s capital campaign that raised over $2.2 million towards the construction of the City of Denton’s Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center. The capital campaign helped fulfill the immediate need for a new state of the art facility with three times the space to care for homeless pets. Unfortunately, within three months the new shelter was full. It was evident that hope for tomorrow and for all adoptable pets in the years to come was the new priority. In October 2015, Jerry and Shirley Watson donated a generous pacesetting gift of $20,000 to the Shelter Endowment Fund. The donation was made in memory of their beloved dog Kandi to ensure care for shelter pets in perpetuity. Annual distributions augment normal DASF fundraising to perpetuate critical adoption, medical, and other DASF programs for shelter pets. Donors interested in leaving a legacy of care for adoptable pets can give to The Shelter Endowment Fund in a variety of ways including pledges and estate planning. Cumulative donations of $5,000 and more are acknowledged on The Shelter Endowment Honor Plaque located at the Linda McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center. For more information, please email [email protected] with your name, city, and daytime phone number so that we can assist you in leaving a legacy. 6 Year In Review Shelter Financial Support 2014 Shelter Support $74,250 2015 Shelter Support $77,258 █ $4720 Kennels $10,000 Discretionary Grant $52,250 Vet Clinic and Adoption Kennel start-up, and other start-up needs $15,000 Medical Supplies $8,000 Emergency Medical $7,800 Emergency Medical $14,000 Adoption Subsidy █ $4,530 Social media advertising shelter pets █ $1,775 Donor recognition at shelter █ $2,500 Cardboard cat carriers █ $150 Printing of flyers █ $783 Staff and volunteer support $30,000 Adoption Subsidy 466 Shelter Pets Adopted 1000 Shelter Pets Adopted 124 Shelter Pets Saved 138 Shelter Pets Saved Emergency Medical Funds are used for pet special/critical procedures.
