Message from Jeffrey Baker, Board of Director’s Chairperson
2014-2015 will be remembered as one of the most pivotal periods in the history of
Happiness House. The collaboration between Happiness House and CP Rochester,
which began in mid-2013, continued in earnest. While the official date of the
affiliation of the two organizations was January 28, 2015, much of the transition
process took place in 2014. Indeed, on December 31, 2014, the State of New York
officially recognized the incorporation of Ability Partners Inc., the parent corporation
for the two organizations.
During 2014, Mary Walsh Boatfield, the President and CEO of Happiness House and
CP Rochester, worked closely with the Board, her staff, our volunteers, and those
we serve to make the process of affiliation occur smoothly, while at the same time
continuing to develop and expand the services Happiness House provides. Change
never comes easily. But through it all, our agency experienced steady growth in the
use of its clinics, respite services, residential and children’s services, recreational
services, habilitation programs, and autism services. What we do is well-received
by the community and supported by numerous foundations and private donors. In
short, What Happens Here Changes Live Forever!
This Annual Report highlights how Happiness House fulfills its mission to serve. Of course our successes, and the
successes of so many of those we serve, can be linked to the skill and caring provided by our dedicated staff and
volunteers. Without their efforts, the goals and values of Happiness House would only be a dream.
With success comes challenges. At nearly every turn, there are efforts by “those who regulate us” to further complicate
an already complicated process. That does not mean that the continual expansion of regulations and the reduction in
monetary support are not well intended. But, no matter what the intentions are, the process of being in compliance
and, at the same time, providing high quality service, requires continual planning and service delivery changes. That is
the primary reason for our collaboration with CP Rochester.
The successes of this past fiscal year have demonstrated the value of the decision to affiliate with CP Rochester and the
value of continuing to search for creative means of providing service delivery. Everyone at Happiness House should be
proud of what has been accomplished this year. As our Vision states: We envision every community being ready to
welcome and utilize the talents and abilities of all individuals. Thanks to our staff, our volunteers, the individuals and
families we serve, and so many other supporters, we are fulfilling our vision and mission and are headed in the right
direction.
The next 12 months promises to be very interesting. The Board looks forward to working with all of you to do what we
do best. Again, thanks for your dedication and support.

effective services to children and adults with and without disabilities through
collaboration with families and partners throughout the Finger Lakes

Faces of Happiness House
Jack
No parent wants to hear that their
child has special needs. In an instant,
all the hopes and dreams you have for
your child are altered. For hundreds of
families in our community, this news
brings about anger, grief, and fear. Our
journey started when we were told that
our youngest son, Jack, would most
likely never walk or talk. He was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder and
would be intellectually and physically
disabled.
Thankfully, there are wonderful organizations in our community like Happiness House that assist
families in dealing with this type of adversity. They exist to help families put one foot in front of the
other when the path isn’t always clear. Happiness House is truly a community asset and a valuable
resource that deserves our support. We are so very appreciative for the compassionate care that
Jack has received. We are impressed with the amazing team that has become like family. His
teachers, aides, and specialists have loved and cared for Jack and have empowered him to
maximize his potential. We are pleased to report that our little boy, the one who would ‘never
walk or talk,’ is now walking independently!

My 19-year old son Ty Coppola has
Down Syndrome. He was born
prematurely and came with a
counterpart, his twin brother, Austin,
a typically-developing child. We knew
right away our lives were not going
to be ‘normal’ anymore, as some
people would say. So we had to
redefine normal – for our family and
the twins. Integrated programs like
those at Happiness House helped us to
do that when the kids were young. Our
journey started with Happiness House
in 1997 when Ty was 18 months old
and was evaluated through Happiness
House’s Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic. It was such a challenge to coordinate all the services we
needed – and it still is! But…Happiness House makes service coordination smoother for us today
because of Ty’s Service Coordinator. I know firsthand what a difference Happiness House makes to
families like ours!

On average, Happiness House serves 1,150 families each year.
We served 24 individuals (14,400 units) in our Respite Program,
providing short-term relief for caregivers of individuals with a
developmental disability.
Happiness House’s Clinical Services Department (Article 16 and
28) served 229 individuals for a total of 9,611 visits. This includes
occupational, physical, speech, aquatic therapy, psychology and
psychiatry services.
Our agency’s Licensed Home Care service provided nursing, personal care, and home health aide services
for 243 individuals (2,328 units).
Home and Community Support Services assisted 14 individuals (14,400 units) with the every day tasks
necessary to live successfully and safely.
The Structured Day Program provided an adult learning environment and allowed for individualized
supports in a group setting for 53 individuals (25,800 units).
Community Habilitation assisted 25 individuals with developmental disabilities (17,500 units) to improve
or maintain their ability to live independently.
Independent Living Skills Training assisted 23 individuals (3,400 units) in learn about employment,
transportation, social opportunities, fiscal independence, health and well-being, education, and
maintaining their home.
The New Friends Preschool integrates children with and without disabilities at four locations: Geneva,
Canandaigua, Waterloo, and South Seneca. We recently graduated 180 children of all abilities. Overall,
Happiness House served 733 children through preschool, Head Start, and related services.

At the 2015 CP of NYS Annual Conference, Patti Cunningham, Executive Vice President/CFO received the

Happiness House signed an Executive Leadership Agreement with Rochester Rehabilitation. Rochester
Rehabilitation provides mental health and employment services.

Families; United Way of Seneca County for the Summer Camp program; and the Ad Council for Expansion of
Autism Services in Ontario County.

Ability Partners Foundation
In January 2015, CP Rochester and Happiness House formed a passive parent
corporation called Ability Partners, Inc. As a result of the formation of Ability
Partners, Inc., the well-established Happiness House Foundation joined with
CP Rochester to create the Ability Partners Foundation. The Ability Partners
Foundation is a separate, not-for-profit organization with a separate Board of
Directors whose sole purpose is to raise and generate funds that will promote,
support, and augment the continuation of long-term services for people with
disabilities offered by Happiness House and CP Rochester.

Since its formation, Happiness House Foundation (now

‘Orange’ Pre-K classroom, winners of the Junior American
Citizens Award! Six preschoolers made Christmas cards for
the veterans as part of their community service project.
Not only did they place 1st for the New York State award,
they were selected as the Northeastern Division 1st place
winner, and placed 1st nationally! Congratulations to our
