Older people`s care services
Getting the most out of life
An A to Z of services
for older people
in Southwark
Welcome to this A to Z directory
of services for older people
This is an A to Z of services directory for
older people living in Southwark. We
hope it’ll help you get more out of life in
Southwark. It’s primarily for anyone aged
60 years or over but carers and family
members may find it useful too. Inside
you'll find information on everything
from accident prevention to library
opening times to walk in health centres.
We hope you find this directory useful
and we'd like to know what you think
about it. We've included a form at the
back which you can send back to us with
your thoughts. From your comments,
we aim to update and publish a new
directory every 18 months.
By working together, we believe we
can deliver you the very best services.
In 2006, following a wide scale
consultation, when we talked with
older people about their needs, we
published Southwark's five year plan
for older people, called Independence
and Wellbeing for Life. We listened to
what you had to say about what really
mattered and used your views to
produce the plan's key actions.
Among many things, you asked for better
information so you could access services
and take part in the range of activities
throughout the borough. So we have
made a real effort to include details
on as many services as possible provided
by different organisations across the
borough – the council, health providers,
police, community groups and voluntary
organisations. If you need to find out
more about general council services, you
should refer to a separate published
directory, the AZ of Services in
Southwark, produced by Southwark
Council. This booklet can be obtained
by calling 020 7525 5000 or by visiting
your local library or one stop shop.

Accidents and emergencies
The risk of accidental injury and falls in
the home increases with age. However
active you are, as you get older you may
find at times that you find it hard to
balance, that your reaction times are
slower, your muscles and joints are
weaker and that your eyesight is
deteriorating. This is why it’s important
that your home is a safe place to be to
reduce the risk of accidents.
Emergency department
Visit the emergency department at King’s
or St Thomas’ hospitals for emergencies
such as loss of consciousness, severe chest
pain, serious accidents or loss of blood.
Always dial 999 if a situation is urgent,
critical or life threatening.
Advice centres
At Southwark advice centres you can
get advice, information and guidance
on your legal rights, entitlements and
responsibilities. Some are general centres,
providing advice on welfare benefits,
housing, employment, consumer rights,
legal matters, health, money and debt
issues. Others specialise in just one issue
such as immigration and nationality.

Community safety
Southwark is getting safer. However, we
know that older people are particularly
concerned about crime and can be
vulnerable to burglary when properties
look neglected, as well as distraction
burglary and bogus callers.
T 020 7525 5000
E [email protected]
W www.safersouthwark.org.uk
Bogus callers
Usually a bogus caller knocks on the door
to distract the person living there, while
an accomplice burgles the property. To
avoid this happening to you:
• fit a chain and/or a spy hole
• always ask for identification to make
sure they are a genuine caller.
Burglary
Keep burglars out:
• make sure your windows are closed
and locked before leaving home, fit
deadlocks to all outside doors
• do not hide spare keys in an obvious
place like under a brick or in the shed
• leave a light or the radio on at night,
so it looks like someone is in
• do not leave cash lying around.

Community wardens
Community wardens are Southwark's
'eyes and ears'. Wardens work with the
police and other agencies, and provide a
reassuring presence that helps prevent
crime and antisocial behaviour, help to
report environmental crime, and act as
an information source for business and
residents. Wardens visit sheltered housing
and community centres, clubs and
groups to ensure that residents are fully
supported and to address any crime or
safety concerns. They can, if necessary,
call in on people who are vulnerable or
have been the victims of hate crime.

Falls prevention and afterfall support
As you get older it is easier to fall and
hurt yourself, especially if you suffer from
conditions such as osteoarthritis. Falling
over an object or tripping on the stairs
are common accidents, so it’s important
to make every area in your home easily
accessible and clutter free. The more fit
and active you are, the less likely you are
to fall, so exercise regularly to maintain
your muscle strength. Eat a healthy,
balanced diet, with plenty of calcium and
vitamin D to keep your bones strong.
If you have fallen, at first just rest and
wait before seeing if you can get up. If
you cannot get up, try and summon help
by calling out, banging on the wall or
using the phone if you can reach it. Try to
crawl to a carpeted area if you are lying
on a hard surface and cover yourself to
keep warm. If you can, roll onto your
hands and knees and crawl to a stable
piece of furniture, such as a sofa. Use
this a support to try and slowly stand.

Falls service
Fire safety
If you have suffered a fall, you can be
referred by your GP to a falls clinic, where
you will be assessed by a team of doctors,
nurses, physiotherapists and occupational
therapists, to find the cause and provide
appropriate treatment. You may be
referred to other services.
Get a smoke alarm, regularly test and
maintain it, and plan an escape route. In
the event of a fire this can dramatically
decrease the risk of death or serious injury.
The London Fire Brigade provides free
home fire safety check and smoke alarms.

By making a will you decide what
happens to your property and possessions
after your death. Although you don't
have to make one by law, it’s the best
way to make sure your estate is passed on
to family and friends exactly as you wish.
If you die without a will, your assets may
be distributed according to the law rather
than your wishes.
The issues surrounding wills, inheritance,
tax and the winding up of the affairs of
the deceased can be very complicated
and can differ from person to person.
While you can make a will yourself, it is
advisable to use a solicitor as there are
various legal formalities you need to
follow to make sure your will is valid.
