Parsley, Chives, Cilantro Teen Volunteers South Courtyard Skokie Public Library // Youth Activities Calendar // SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2016 s n i g i r O n a m u 3 H r e g b o n t i c r O o – l 9 Exp ember t: i b i h x e l Specia Sept Based on a popular exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, this national traveling exhibition explores the process of scientific investigation by shedding light on what we know about human evolution and how we know it through interactive kiosks, hands-on displays, and videos. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of free programs, including presentations by Smithsonian scientists. Docent-led tours will be available. The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the American Library Association’s Public Programs Office. This project was made possible through the support of a grant from the John Templeton Foundation and support from the Peter Buck Human Origins Fund. Opening Reception Sunday, September 11 // 1 pm // All Ages Celebrate the opening of our Exploring Human Origins exhibit, featuring origin story performances by the Blackhawk Performance Company. We’ll also have refreshments and family-friendly activities in our Youth Services Department. Find out how humans perfected the making and manipulation of tools. BOOMBOX: HUMAN September 6 through December 18, let’s better understand what it means to be human. Each month we’ll focus on a different theme related to humanity, starting with the milestones of human evolution, then exploring the inner workings of the mind and body, creative expression through music, movement, and art, and more through hands-on activities and experiments. DROP-IN HOURS Mondays, 4–8 pm Tuesdays, 3:30–6 pm Wednesdays, 4–8 pm Thursdays, 3:30–6 pm Saturdays, 1–4:30 pm Sundays, 1–4:30 pm All drop-in hours are for children in kindergarten through adults. Sunday, October 23 // 3 pm Enjoy a concert of diverse music that showcases the beauty and versatility of the French horn. You’ll hear about the instruments (Is it really French? Why do we hold it that way?) between pieces. We guarantee you will be engaged, entertained, and surprised to hear the French horn do so many different things. Visit the Sorting Hat to be sorted, then complete a variety of activities to earn points for your house. Costumes encouraged. Thursday, October 27 // 7 pm Join Inderjeet Sidhu for an evening of Indian beats, rhythms, drum patterns, and techniques. This presentation will offer you the chance to learn how various drums of the subcontinent are played. Campfire Stories Friday, October 28 // 6:30–7:30 pm Enjoy the fall weather with stories around the campfire. Storyteller Susan Stone will tell not-too-scary stories that are perfect for entertaining the whole family. Stay after the stories for s’mores! Stargazer Night Draconids Friday, October 7 // 7 pm We’ll have our telescope out for stargazing, constellation naming, and space discovery. See if you can view the Draconids Meteor Shower.
