Imagine this! You arrive at Aklan or Caticlan airport. You are picked up by our private
minibus service that brings you through lush tropical forests to the port of Caticlan.
You then take a 15 minute boat ride in one of the local fishermen’s’ boats across
crystal clear blue water full of multi-coloured coral and a multitude of tropical fish.
After you get off the boat, you will be driven to the EBC training centre accommodations. Drop off your suitcase, walk a few hundred yards and find yourself on a 5 mile
stretch of white sand beach bordering the clear warm sea.
To relax, take a seat in one of the small beach hut bars, nestling under coconut
palms and then chill out completely as you sip your ice-cold drink.
A lot of foreign tourists make Boracay a yearly destination and because of this, there
are many who chose to stay on and live here. Even the locals love this place.
Boracay can be found on the north-western tip of Panay in Aklan, a province in the
Visayas islands known for its colourful Ati-Atihan festival.
It boast of all the elements of a tropical heaven: crystal blue waters, powder white
sand, liberal doses of tropical palms and flowering plants, and a healthy and diverse
marine life.


Boracay has three little communities; Yapak in the north, Balabag in the middle, and
Manoc-manoc in the south. Hilly elevations of up to 100 meters above sea level
characterize Yapak and Manoc-manoc. Intertwining trails link the small villages and
may sometimes lead to lush tropical jungles.
The type of food and bars available on Boracay are as diverse as the nationalities of
its visitors and of course the locals. Filipino, French, Chinese, Australian, Belgian,
German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Thai, American, British and Irish all live
together to provide a great variety of food, drink and entertainment.
Boracay beach beckons for some serious swimming, or just wading by the shore.
For more active vacationers, windsurfing, kite surfing (new) and parasailing gears
are readily available.
There are over a dozen beaches dotting Boracay island: White Beach, Diniwid, Balinghai, Lapuz-lapuz, and Bulabog, among others.
Work on your tan, read a book, relax and have a massage. White Beach, probably
the most famous stretch in the country, features bright, fine sand and clear, shallow
waters.
Spend the last hours of the day at any of Boracay’s bars and discos. A good drink in
hand while dancing on the sand with a few brilliant fireflies. If this seems too rowdy
for your taste, take a stroll on the moonlit beach.

TRAINING COURSE SCHEDULE
The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to
1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice
starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a detailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will
have to sign the register and hand in your signed course payment receipts.

Are you already in the Philippines? If you are, ignore this section.
Your passport
Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life left on it when you
travel to the Philippines. If it doesn't, you will have problems.

All students have to get a tourist visa before traveling to Philippines.


“I’ve been told that I don’t need a visa to enter the Philippines, why do I have to
get one?”
Whilst this is true for many countries, the limit on staying in the Philippines without
a visa is a maximum of 21 days (3 weeks). The EBC course runs for 4 weeks so you’ll
need to get one. For most people, obtaining an extended visa is not a problem.
Check with your country’s Philippine embassy or consulate to find out what your
specific entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.
Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Philippine embassy or
consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to
enter Philippines. In order to take the course you must have a tourist visa that will
allow you to stay in Philippines for 5 weeks.


Mandatory

Your passport with your visa stamp with at least 6 months left to run on it (with
a visa if you need one – refer to the visa section for more information).
A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in the Philippines. If
you arrive only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your return ticket, they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be
very expensive. The chances of this happening are unlikely but not impossible
so play it safe.
Your signed course payment receipts.
If you have a degree, a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a copy
of your degree certificate.



Recommended items for the TEFL course


Laptop computer - Check that it is wireless B/G compatible. We give you the
codes to connect to our free WIFI but you are responsible for configuring your
laptop and making sure it works properly and connects.
Mobile/Cell phone - If you have a tri-band phone - BRING IT. You will find that it

is cheaper to buy a pay-as-you-go card for your phone than it is to buy a new
phone. Being contactable by phone is VERY important. Good local phone companies: Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, Sun Cellular.
We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you take out personal accident and health insur-

ance.

If you plan to stay and look for TEFL jobs you may need your birth certificate
(original or a notarised copy) and original or copies of your University or College

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?
There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect
your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.
There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform
with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart
casual as per the following guidelines.
Women
Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very
short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed
shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.
Men
Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a tie is not
required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneakers/trainers). Long hair should be tied back.
Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures mentioned
in the Local Weather Conditions section shown later in this document.


ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION
The nearest airport is Caticlan. If you've opted for one of our accommodation packages that includes airport pick up, just go to the arrival hall and look for someone
with your name on a display card. Aklan airport is about 50 km. from Boracay.
FERRY
Boracay is an island. It is separated from the mainland by a shallow channel about 2
km. wide. Ferries run between the mainland side at Caticlan and Boracay on a regular basis. The shut down at night. The channel is shallow so there is no harbour. You
get on the ferries by gangplank from the beach so you may get your feet wet. The
crossing takes around 20 minutes.
TRICYCLE
Once you are on Boracay island transportation is by tricycle (motorcycle + sidecar)
or minibus. There are lots of them. All you need to do is flag one down and tell the
driver where you want to go. The price varies by destination and it is customary to
give around a 10% tip.

WHAT IS THE TEFL JOB MARKET IN THE PHILIPPINES LIKE?
The TEFL job market in the Philippines is always good and hiring is year-round.
Don't delay looking for a job until you start running out of money. The best time to
get a job is when you finish the course. We send your CV/resume directly to the
hiring managers in schools in the Philippines. Most schools in the Philippines do not
care whether you have a work permit or not.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR AN ENGLISH TEACHER?
The average salary in the Philippines is about 1,000 USD/month. This varies depending on what type of school or company you work for and whether you work full or
part-time. We do not recommend that you accept less than 1,000 USD/month unless the school is also throwing in some other incentives like free language lessons.
HOW MANY EBC GRADUATES REALLY FIND WORK IN THE PHILIPPINES?
The EBC course training centre in Boracay also runs a language school. Subject to
availability, you may get offered an English teaching job by the language school at
the end of the course.
All of our course graduates that have wanted to work in the Philippines have been
able to secure teaching positions.

Local transportation
Boracay is a great place to see on foot.
Transportation on Boracay is by tricycle (motorcycle + sidecar) or minibus. There are
lots of them. All you need to do is flag one down and tell the driver where you want
to go. The price is fixed by destination and it is customary to give around a 10% tip
Shopping
Along White Beach, there is a wide variety of gift shops and boutiques along the
beach path and in D*Mall. In addition to the crowded stalls that you expect in Asia,
Boracay also has several high-end stores including clothing, art and household
items. Some places will permit you to haggle, others have a fixed pricing system with
price tags. Shop around as prices vary. Outside of White Beach, the shopping becomes sparse or non-existent.
While walking or laying on the sand, anywhere on Boracay, you’ll be approached to
buy a variety of items including jewelry made of shells, fresh fruit, ice cream, sunglasses or a nice massage.
COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas in tourist areas attract pick-pockets,
so watch your purse or wallet.
Beaches and swimming
You will be on a tropical island that has the best beach in the world. Need we say
more.

sites. Ask your crew to organize a romantic BBQ on the beach with fresh grilled seafood. Cruise back at sunset to experience breath-taking views.
It is worth hiring motorbikes or scooters out to explore the island, as there are other
beautiful beaches on the other side of the island that are even better for snorkelling
that will be completely deserted. Hire them for a couple of days and you should get
a discount. The roads are a bit dodgy, and some are still being constructed, but it’s a
good laugh and better than plunking yourself on a patch of white sand and seeing
nothing. If you happen to be lying on the beach though definitely have a massage
and manicure.
Horse riding is a fun activity in Boracay - get off the beaten path and experience native villages and scenery most other visitors don’t get to see. All levels of experience
are catered to. Ask a tricycle to take you to the Boracay Horse Riding Stables.
D’Wall Climbing Gym, D’Mall near Boat Station 2. An outdoor rock climbing gym
located at D’Mall near Boat Station 2.
Scuba diving
For those interested in Scuba Diving and Diving Packages, there are approximately
20 Dive Centres along White Sand beach; it is a good place to learn or to improve
your skills. Cost is typically $33 per dive which includes hire of all equipment.The
dive centres operate a cartel and have agreed standard prices amongst themselves
so prices will be the same at all centres. There are 25-30 dive sites within 10-15
minutes speed boat ride from the beach, suitable for beginners up to advanced level. Dives range from ‘Angol Point’ (10m), through ‘Crocodile Island’ (22-25m), a
straightforward wall dive, up to ‘Yapak’- a deep wall dive suitable for only the most
experienced divers due to strong currents, although there is the possibility of seeing
sharks and stingrays.
Boat tours
The best way to see the beauty of Boracay and it`s various beaches is by Paraw
(native outrigger sailboat). You will be constantly asked if you want to take a boat

trip, as there are literally dozens of companies offering this service. It is better to go
with a reputable and established group such as Allen Fun Tours (motorized banca boat
tours) or Red Pirates (para sailing) to ensure your safety and avoid being overcharged.
Kiteboarding
Boracay’s Bulabog beach is known as the best kitesurf destination in Asia. The season
runs from November through to April with onshore winds varying between 12-30 knots.
Isla Kiteboarding school, Bulabog Beach. Offers courses from beginners to advanced
level. All instructors are IKO-certified.
Pinas Kite Boarding, Bulabog Beach. Locally owned kite-boarding shop, offers courses
from level 1 to 3. All instructors are IKO-certified.

Skimboarding in Boracay has been a new fun sport for kids and entertainment for older
for people for several years. It is a welcome new attraction and a pleasure to watch.
Skimboards are available for rent at several places along White Beach. But be sure to
hire an expert to teach you to do the skills.
Massage/Spa
Along White Beach you will be approached frequently by women offering to give you a
massage, which they will do on the spot or on a towel laid out on the beach - your
choice.
A bit more organized, White Beach also has several “Massage Stations”: collections of
masseurs that have their mats set up. The stations are typically open as long as there
are customers around but in general start to shut down just after sunset.
For Swedish, Accupressure, Shiatsu etc, visit Abe (pronounced Abby) the blind masseur
who operates outside Cocoloco restaurant in Angol (south of boat station 3). Only P300

There is a great outdoor massage station in the beach area of Nigi Nigi Beach Resort,
where they have two tables set up. The booth is draped with curtains which they will
close if you wish, or leave open if you want to watch the people on the beach. They
offer every massage in the book, and charge 500 Peso for one hour.
Things to see
White Beach - This is what most people are here for. Not only is it a lovely stretch of
powdery white sand against azure water, it’s also the commercial center of the island.
The long beach is divided into three sections, Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3. The
widest beach front area is located at Station 1 where prime hotels and resorts are located. A stretched grove of shady palm trees separates the beach from the line of restaurants, cafes, bars, internet cafes, shops, bakeries, etc. There is lots of room to stretch
out on the beach with your sarong or you can rent a reclining chair from one of the vendors where they will be happy to keep you filled with food and drinks. Most people opt
for the shade and tend to hang out under the palm trees.
Puka Beach - A quiet stretch of white sand along the northern tip of the island, Puka
Beach is an image of what most people expect on a tropical island: white sand, azure
water, and relatively empty. This is where locals gather the small puka shells for some of
the jewelry that is sold on the island so expect the sand to be more coarse than on
White Beach. The water tends to be a little rougher on this side of the island but it is
much quieter. Similarly, there are fewer services -- there are only a couple of restaurants, but you likely won’t have a problem getting a cold drink or an ice cream as there
are a few vendors that patrol the beach. The main road in Boracay terminates at Puka
Beach therefore you’ll be able to hire a tricycle to get there in less than 10-15 minutes
from central White Beach. Make sure you arrange a pickup if it is a quiet day and no
tricycles are hanging around the beach. Most people experience Puka as one of their
sailboat or banca stops during a day trip. This is a good spot for a picnic, but be sure to
bring your trash home with you.


Baling Hai Beach - This is a quiet little cove just north of Diniwid Beach, where you can
enjoy swimming, snorkelling and dining in a relaxed, peaceful environment. There are
some fantastic views from the cliff-top restaurant. Baling Hai is often included as a stopoff on an island boat tour.
The Bat Cave - The Bat Cave, is home to small insectivorous bats (the larger fruit bats

happy to accompany you there for a fee, or “tip”. The cave is on the western-end of the
island and down several dirt roads. The guide will then take you on a short hike through
the forest to the mouth of a cave, which drops down at a very steep angle. The mouth
of the cave is littered with large boulders, and is extremely difficult to enter and walk
down. There is no visible path, no handrail, and the stones are extremely slippery with
slime and bat guano, as well as extremely dangerous, since the cave is at such an extreme angle. Also, the air inside the cave is very warm and humid, and in addition to the
amount of guano, is very difficult to breathe. Snakes live inside the cave. Caution should
be taken by those visiting and entering the cave. There are bats in the cave, but down at
the bottom of it in the dark, and unless you have a flashlight or are there at dusk, you
won’t see them. The ceiling of the cave is interesting, however, with multiple, small
stalactites. Just nearby, you can find another cave, called “crystal” cave which has a lot
of stalactites and a hole on the opposite site of the entrance, from which you can watch
out to the sea if you dare to climb up to it. You will have to pay 50 Pesos entry-fee to
visit both caves on behalf of the family that owns the land, in addition to paying your
guide. Visiting both caves can cost up to 2,500 Pesos for the guide, but this is the “rich
tourist price”, so try to bargain if you like.

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in the Philippines?
Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with
the Philippines, and of course it depends on where you choose to live.
It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards in the Philippines, which means they can afford a comfortable standard of living. A TEFL teacher can
expect to earn around 1,000 USD/month working 20 to 30 hours per week. While this
may not sound a lot by international standards, it means you can live quite comfortably
in the Philippines.
How much money should I bring?
You should budget to spend between 500 Dollars (Spartan life) to 1,000 Dollars (good
life) for the period covering the 28 day course. If you want to stay and work in Boracay
or the rest of the Philippines you should budget between 1,000 to 2,000 Dollars to cover
finding apartments and living expenses until you get your first pay-check.
