Dear Members,
2010 promises to be an exciting and challenging year for all of us. The global
economy is beginning the slow, but hopefully steady, recovery from the
recession. Many parts of the world are struggling to recover from recent
natural disasters such as the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and China. In times
like these, the Spirit of Notre Dame shines brightest, and the Notre Dame Club
of Orange County will strive to continue our “fight” campaign to make a
difference in our community.
We have several outstanding events planned as the Club continues to strive
toward our goal: providing activities grounded in our Catholic faith promoting
Camaraderie, Catholic/Christian Spirituality, Continuing Education,
Communications, Community Service and Current Student Support. These
great events include:
 Scholarship Fundraising Program/Summer Service Projects
 The Faley Games for Special Students
 Hesburgh Lectures
 Annual Golf Tournament and Silent Auction
 Annual UND Celebration, Student Send-off / Family Picnic & Mass
 Sunday Breakfast Club at the Southwest Community Center
In addition, the Brian Kelly era begins at Notre Dame as our new coach strives
to return the Notre Dame football program to prominence. The Irish will make
their bi-annual trip to Southern California over Thanksgiving Weekend
(November 25-28) and we have several exciting activities planned including a
pep rally, tailgate party and roundtrip transportation to the game on Saturday.
Your involvement in the Club activities is more important than ever. Please
remember that your membership dues are the primary way we fund our
scholarship endowment and community service programs. Membership
applications and dues can be submitted either on-line at www.ndcoc.com or by
mailing in the application on the back of this newsletter. Please submit your
annual dues by May 31st.
Finally, I would like to congratulate the newest members of the Notre Dame
family, the Orange County students recently admitted to the University of
Notre Dame and their families. This year’s admitted class is the strongest in
Notre Dame’s history and students and parents alike should be very proud of
this accomplishment. Welcome aboard and come fight with us….
WE ARE THE FIGHTING IRISH!

With all of our challenges in the present and concerns about the
future, why should Catholics care about the past? This lecture
will explore reasons why an awareness of history is important
for the informed faith of educated Catholics: the inescapability
of Christianity as a religion rooted in time, the ways in which
history can serve as a handmaid to theology, and the dual
reality of the Christian past as both inspiration and scandal.
Brad Gregory is an Associate Professor of History at the University of
Notre Dame. He holds five university degrees, including undergraduate
and advanced degrees in both history and philosophy. He received a
B.S. in history from Utah State University; B.A. and Licentiate degrees in
philosophy from the Institute of Philosophy of the Catholic University of
Louvain, Belgium; an M.A. in history from the University of Arizona; and
a Ph.D. in history from Princeton University.
Prior to taking his position at Notre Dame, he was an Assistant Professor
of History at Stanford University and a Junior Fellow in the Harvard
Society of Fellows. He has received teaching awards at both Stanford
and Notre Dame. Dr. Gregory is the author of many scholarly articles. His
book “Salvation at Stake: Christian Martyrdom in Early Modern
Europe” has won six awards, including the 1999 Thomas J. Wilson Prize
as the best first book published by the Harvard University Press and the
California Book Award Silver Medal for Nonfiction. He is a historian of
late medieval and early modern Christianity, and of intellectual history in
early modern Europe. He teaches courses on early modern Europe as
well as the first year Honors Humanities Seminar at Notre Dame.

the official ND Alumni Trip (conducted by Anthony Travel) will stay at this hotel for the weekend.)
Several events are being planned and finalized for your enjoyment.
Tailgate Party The Notre Dame Family Tailgate Party prior to the Pep Rally Friday eve-
ning beginning at 5:00 p.m.: Tailgate Food and Soft Drinks will be included in the price of admission. There will also be a “Kids Buffet” with pizza, hot dogs, and soft drinks. The ND
Cheerleaders will attend and will be happy to pose for photos with both parents and their

for conversations, autographs, and photos.
Pep Rally The Pep Rally, led by our fantastic Cheerleaders and Leprechaun, will begin at
7:30 p.m. Friday. It is too early to know for certain who will speak at the Pep Rally. As in
the past, we know we will have a great group of former players who will join us.
Bookstore The Notre Dame Bookstore will be set-up at The Hyatt through the weekend,
beginning Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. This will provide an opportunity to purchase official
ND clothing and memorabilia, brought directly from campus, to wear at the Pep Rally, the
game, and for Christmas gifts for Notre Dame fans on your Christmas Shopping List!
Also planned - Saturday Morning Breakfast-Brunch prior to leaving for the Coli-
seum (or Disneyland), Deluxe roundtrip bus transportation from the hotel to the Coliseum, a “Super Game Watch” for those who will not be attending the game will be held at
The Hyatt’s newly renovated bar. Other activities and events may be scheduled as game day
nears.

Faley Games
“A Special Day for Special Athletes”
Once again the NDCOC will participate in the Kathleen E. Faley Games on Friday, May 7, 2010 at Cal State University Fullerton. This is our Club’s eighth
year of involvement in the Faley Games and we extend a special invitation to our members who
have never attended.
We will meet between 8:00-8:15am at the Registration Booth on the soccer practice field north of
the main gym. Free parking is available at the adjoining parking lot with entrance on St. College
Blvd. We invite our NDCOC members to attend this truly inspiring event that grows in popularity
every year. The Board once again has approved a $25 contribution for all members who attend.
We need your help to coordinate the events and interact with the athletes throughout the day. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to make this day a rewarding experience for our special athletes. We
can use your help as early as possible. To volunteer, please contact Gene Tidgewell ‘71, 714-7136563 or by email at [email protected]. More information can be found at
www.csufspecialgames.org
About the Faley Games: The initial Games began in
1986 and were dedicated to Fullerton alumna Kathleen
E. Faley, a founding planning committee member who
died in an auto accident.

Young Alumni
The goal of the Young Alumni Committee is to coordinate events and activities for recent grads to maintain
the traditions, friendships and community-based lifestyle of Notre Dame. The Notre Dame Club of Orange
County and the Young Alumni promote these traits through community service and social events. This Spring
and Summer we’d love to plan multiple activities and events for our Young Alumni in Orange County. Like
life on campus, the Notre Dame Club of Orange County members volunteer their time to many different charity and service organizations. The Faley Games and “Breakfast Club” at the Southwest Community Center are
just a few events where we dedicate our efforts.
Three Sunday’s a month, club members assists in preparing breakfast for some of Santa Ana’s less fortunate
at the Southwest Community Center. The Young Alumni committee has designated the last Sunday of each
month as our “Young Alumni Sunday” in an effort to lend our support as a group. Please take 3 hours out of
your month and join us for this rewarding experience. Hope to see you there. Please visit the club website
and Facebook page to keep up-to-date on our future events.
If you have any questions or suggestions on activities or events you feel would be a good fit for the club,
please let me know. We’re always looking for new and exciting things to do. Go Irish!

BREA’S COSMINA CIOBANU EARNS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Seniors Cosmina Ciobanu (women's tennis) and John Lytle (men's swimming) each earned the
BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Award as the institutional representatives for the University of Notre Dame, announced by the league. As the recipients of the league honor, both Ciobanu and Lytle will receive a $2,000 scholarship
towards graduate studies.
The BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2009-10 academic year. Thirty-two student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 16
member institutions) receive postgraduate scholarships as the winners of their respective institutions' Scholar-Athlete
Awards. The conference also names male and female Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and a Football ScholarAthlete of the Year.
Ciobanu has had a stellar career at Notre Dame both on and off the court. The Brea, Calif., native earned all-BIG
EAST honors in 2009 and was named to the conference all-tournament team for both singles and doubles in 2008,
helping the Irish win BIG EAST Conference Championships in both seasons. A three-time NCAA team participant, Ciobanu led the Irish to an NCAA quarterfinal appearance in 2007 and an NCAA semifinal performance in 2009, the highest finish in program history.
The winner of the 2009 St. Joseph Valley Rockne Student-Athlete award, Ciobanu holds an overall singles record of
91-30 and a 95-27 mark in doubles action. A mainstay in the Irish lineup for the past three seasons, Ciobanu has career-high Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings of 31st (singles) and 39th (doubles) and set Notre Dame's
single-season dual-match winning percentage record with a 26-1 singles mark in 2007.
The daughter of Calin and Camelia Ciobanu, she has been a regular on the Dean's List at Notre Dame, earning the
honor four of the past six semesters, as a double major in science pre-professional studies and anthropology with a
3.857 grade-point average. She is a member of the Notre Dame's Academic Honors Program and has been named an
ITA Scholar Athlete and BIG EAST Academic All-Star for the past three years.
Ciobanu also is very active in the community, volunteering with the Fighting Irish Fight For Life program benefitting youth cancer
patients and interning with Dr. Daniel Danahey at the Michiana Eye Center.

done so. If you received this newsletter via mail, your 2010 dues status is listed just below your
address. You can also check if you have paid dues on our Website at www.ndcoc.com (click the
Membership link and enter your email address to have your dues status emailed to you).
Your membership dues help fund our community service endeavors in Orange County and provide
scholarship money for our current students with financial need. We encourage you to visit our
Community Service Page at www.ndcoc.com for more information on the events that your
membership dues help to sponsor. We also have the latest Club news and event details on our
Website, so please visit often.
