A MESSAGE TO PARENTS
Dear Parents, Children and Friends of Camp Howard:
Camp Howard was established in 1953 as a fun, recreational camp allowing youth
from all walks of life to enjoy a week of camping in a woodland setting with a
program based on Christian values. Camp Howard, named for Archbishop Edward
D. Howard, is a youth camp located 45 minutes from downtown Portland, between
Corbett and Sandy, Oregon. The camp property was donated by the Horton family
in 1952 and is operated by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO)/Camp Howard.
Thanks to our Annual Champions of Faith Benefit Dinner, which began in 2011, the
camp has been financially blessed with the funding necessary to offer scholarship
assistance as well as to make needed program and facility improvements. Since
2012 we have heated the pool, rebuilt the camp’s Star Deck and covered the Christ
Child Basketball Courts (three full-sized courts.) Our current goal is to complete a
zip line installation by the start of the 2016 summer camping season!
Thank you for choosing Camp Howard for a summer experience for your child. We
are grateful to have the opportunity to make great memories for your loved ones.

Camp Howard again this summer.
The CIT program is a two-week program designed to teach leadership skills and
prepare a person for a potential counselor role in the future. Must complete
year 1 prior to year 2.
Mini Camp: For the camper not quite ready to be away from home a full
week.
Day Camp: Get a taste of most camp activites without the overnight stay.
Family Camp: Spectacular opportunity to enjoy a weekend at camp with
family & great activities!
What is General Camp?
General Camp is the traditional Camp Howard summer experience and is a
favorite that provides the opportunity for campers to participate in a multitude
of camp activities scheduled Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon and is open
to camper ages 6-14.

What is Specialty Camp?
A “Specialty Camp” at Camp Howard is a variation of our “General Camp”
experience with an infusion of the camper’s chosen special interest activity.
Campers will participate in most general camp activities and schedules, with
the exception of two general activity periods, when they attend their chosen
Specialty Camp program for 1 ½ - 2 hours each day (M-TH).

Camp Howard is Accredited by ACA
ACA Accreditation
Camp Howard voluntarily holds itself to the highest professional standards in
the camping industry through its membership in the American Camping
Association (ACA). Every three (3) years Camp Howard must undergo a
comprehensive on-site visit and analysis of its operating practices to remain
accredited. These operating benchmarks (up to 300 standards), comprise the
most up-to-date, research-based standards and practices governing
professional camp operation within the United States.
In Town Sport Camps:
CYO networks with local Catholic High Schools to present various sport opportunities; including Basketball and Swim. Look for football camp online at a later
date!
What is “in the works” at Camp?
Structures Ready for 2016
The Christ Child Basketball Courts have been covered and will be used for the
summer programming in 2016. Three full-size basketball courts under cover
will be converted into areas for the following activities:

A master plan is being put in place for a ZIP LINE course. A component is
anticipated to be ready for Summer Camp 2016. Additional components to the
master plan will be added each year!
Registering for Camp Howard
Registration: You may register your child for Camp Howard online by
visiting our website at www.cyocamphoward.org. If you do not have access
to online registration, contact the CYO/Camp Howard office at (503) 231-9484.
Please note that registration closes at noon on Thursday prior to each camp
session.
Scholarships: Limited funds are available to those who qualify. Applications
may be downloaded from our website.
